A quasi-experimental study of ethnic and gender bias in university grading.

ABSTRACT: This paper contributes to the debate on race- and gender-based discrimination in grading. We apply a quasi-experimental research design exploiting a shift from open grading in 2018 (examinee's name clearly visible on written assignments), to blind grading in 2019 (only student ID number visible). The analysis thus informs name-based stereotyping and discrimination, where student ethnicity and gender are derived from their names on written assignments. The case is a quantitative methods exam at Roskilde University (Denmark). We rely on OLS regression models with interaction terms to analyze whether blind grading has any impact on the relative grading differences between the sexes (female vs. male examinees) and/or between the two core ethnic groups (ethnic minorities vs. ethnic majority examinees). The results show no evidence of gender or ethnic bias based on names in the grading process. The results were validated by several checks for robustness. We argue that the weaker evidence of ethnic discrimination in grading vis-à-vis discrimination in employment and housing suggests the relevance of gauging the stakes involved in potentially discriminatory activities.

Project description:ObjectiveTo assess the impact of the Gender Roles, Equality and Transformations (GREAT) intervention: a narrative-based, resource-light, life-stage tailored intervention package designed to promote gender-equitable attitudes and behaviours, and improve sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and gender-based violence (GBV) outcomes among adolescents and their communities.DesignRepeated cross-sectional evaluation study, using propensity score matching combined with difference-in-difference estimation.SettingTwo postconflict communities in Lira and Amuru districts in Northern Uganda.ParticipantsMale and female unmarried adolescents (10-14 years, 15-19 years), married adolescents (15-19 years) and adults (over the age of 19 years) were selected using a stratified, two-stage cluster sample of primary and secondary schools and households (baseline: n=2464, endline: n=2449).Primary outcome measuresInequitable gender attitudes and behaviours; GBV; and SRH knowledge and behaviours.ResultsStatistically significant intervention effects were seen across all three outcomes-gender equity, GBV and SRH-among older and newly married adolescents and adults. Among married adolescents, intervention effects include shifts on: Inequitable household roles scale score: -6.5 ((95% CI -10.8 to -2.2), p<0.05); inequitable attitudes towards GBV scale: -4.7 ((95% CI -9.8 to -0.3), p<0.05); per cent who reacted violently to their partner: -15.7 ((95% CI -27.1 to -4.4), p<0.05); inequitable SRH attitudes scale: -12.9 ((95% CI -17.3 to -8.5), p<0.05).ConclusionThe GREAT intervention model demonstrates the promise of a resource-light, life-stage tailored programme that employs culturally appropriate, participatory and narrative-based techniques to advance gender equity and adolescent health. Project description:BackgroundFood safety is of global importance and has been of concern in university settings in recent years. However, effective methods to conduct food safety education are limited. This study aims to evaluate the effects of an intervention on food safety knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) by social media, WeChat, among university students.MethodsA quasi-experimental study was conducted in Chongqing, China. Two departments were recruited randomly from a normal university and a medical university. One department from each university was randomly selected as the intervention group and the other as the control group. All freshmen students in each selected department were chosen to participate in this study. One thousand and twenty-three students were included at baseline, and 444 students completed the study. This intervention was conducted through food safety-related popular science articles with an average of three articles per week released by WeChat official accounts called "Yingyangren" for two months to the intervention group. No intervention was conducted in the control group. An independent t-test was used to test statistical differences in the food safety KAP scores between the two groups. A paired t-test was used to test statistical differences in the food safety KAP scores between before and after the intervention. And quantile regression analysis was conducted to explore the difference between the two groups across the quantile levels of KAP change.ResultsAfter the intervention, compared with control group, participants in the intervention group did not score significant higher on knowledge (p = 0.98), attitude (p = 0.13), and practice (p = 0.21). And the scores of food safety knowledge and practices slightly improved after the intervention both in the intervention group (p = 0.01 and p = 0.01, respectively) and in the control group (p = 0.0003 and p = 0.0001, respectively). Additionally, the quantile regression analysis showed that the intervention had no effect on improving the food safety KAP scores.ConclusionsThe intervention using the WeChat official account had limited effects on improving the food safety KAP among the university students. This study was an exploration of food safety intervention using the WeChat official account; valuable experience can be provided for social media intervention in future study.Trial registrationChiCTR-OCH-14004861.
