Alternatives in Education-Rat and Mouse Simulators Evaluated from Course Trainers' and Supervisors' Perspective.

ABSTRACT: Simulators allow the inexperienced to practice their skills prior to exercise on live animals. Therefore, they bear great potential in overcoming the dilemma between the present demand for high-quality practical training involving live animals whilst implementing the 3R principle according to the Directive 2010/63/EU. Currently, one mouse and six rat simulators are commercially available. As data on their impact are lacking, this project aimed at providing an overview of the awareness, implementation, and methodical and practical satisfaction provided by 35 course trainers and supervisors of laboratory animal training courses for mice and rats regarding the simulators available. Although simulators facilitate training of relevant techniques and relatively high awareness of them seemed to be present, their implementation is currently very low, possibly due to lack of meeting the respondents' demands. Thus, this study revealed the overall approval of simulator training and general demand for user-optimized, realistic, and financially affordable simulators and, hence, indicates a strong impulse for new developments strengthening the 3Rs as a benefit to all animals used in research.

Project description:Training the Trainers of Tomorrow Today (T4) is a new way to deliver "Training for Trainers". Responding to local dissatisfaction with existing arrangements, T4 builds on 3 essential requirements for a future shape of training: 1. Clinical Leadership and a Collaborative Approach 2. Cross-Specialty Design and Participation 3. Local Delivery and Governance Networks Design principles also included: 3 levels of training to reflect differing needs of clinical supervisors, educational supervisors and medical education leader, mapping to GMC requirements and the London Deanery's Professional Development Framework; alignment of service, educational theory and research; recognition of challenges in delivering and ensuring attendance in busy acute and mental health settings, and the development of a faculty network. The delivery plan took into account census of professional development uptake and GMC Trainee Surveys. Strong engagement and uptake from the 11 Trusts in NW London has been achieved, with powerful penetration into all specialties. Attendance has exceeded expectations. Against an initial 12 month target of 350 attendances, 693 were achieved in the first 8 months. Evaluation of content demonstrates modules are pitched appropriately to attendees needs, with positive feedback from trainers new to the role. Delivery style has attracted high ratings of satisfaction: 87% attendees rating delivery as "good\excellent". External evaluation of impact demonstrated improved training experiences through changes in supervision, the learning environment and understanding of learning styles. We have addressed sustainability of the programme by advertising and recruiting Local Faculty Development Trainers. Volunteer consultants and higher trainees are trained to deliver the programme on a cascade model, supported by the Specialty Tutors, individual coaching and educational bursaries. The Trainers are local champions for excellence in training, provide a communication between the programme and local providers, are a repository of expertise in their service, and trouble shoot local barriers to engagement.

Project description:OBJECTIVES:To identify underlying causes for failure of medical thesis projects and the constantly high drop-out rate in Germany from the supervisors' perspective and to compare the results with the students' perspective. SETTING:Cross-sectional survey. Online questionnaire for survey of medical thesis supervisors among the staff of Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany. Published, earlier longitudinal survey among students for comparison. PARTICIPANTS:1069 thesis supervisors participated. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS:Data are presented using descriptive statistics, and the χ2 test served to compare the results among supervisors with the earlier data from the longitudinal survey of doctoral students. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOMES:Not applicable. This survey is an observational study. RESULTS:Of 3653 potential participants, 1069 (29.3%) supervising 3744 doctoral candidates participated in the study. Supervisors considered themselves to be highly motivated and to offer adequate supervision. On the other hand, 87% stated that they did not feel well prepared for thesis supervision. Supervisors gave lack of timeliness of doctoral students and personal differences (p=0.024 and p=0.001) as the main reasons for terminating thesis projects. Doctoral students predominantly mentioned methodological problems and difficult subjects as critical issues (p=0.001 and p<0.001). Specifically, students felt ill prepared for the statistical part of their research-49.5% stated that they never received statistical assistance, whereas 97% of supervisors claimed to help their students with statistical analysis. CONCLUSIONS:The authors found that both thesis supervisors and medical students feel ill prepared for their roles in the process of a medical dissertation. Contradictory reasons for terminating medical thesis projects based on supervisors' and students' self-assessment suggest a lack of communication and true scientific collaboration between supervisors and doctoral students as the major underlying issue that requires resolution.

Project description:Objective: Demands for a stronger competence orientation of specialty postgraduate medical training require the expansion of the didactic qualifications of those responsible for postgraduate medical training. In the context of the foundation of the Berlin competence center for postgraduate general practice training, a train the trainer basic seminar was designed together with the Berlin chamber of physicians. The seminar aims to convey formal-legal aspects in close connection with the development of didactic competences of the general practice trainers. This article presents the didactic concept, focal points and the schedule of the one-and-a-half-day seminar to be able to adapt it to one's own context. Methodology: After the seminars, participants filled out an evaluation form. The questionnaire included the subjective experiences of increased competence, the relevance of the contents, and the satisfaction with the structure and methods of the seminar. The data were analyzed descriptively. Results: Since June 2018, 46 general practice trainers have participated in one of three train the trainer seminars. 97.6% of the participants were very satisfied or satisfied with the overall seminar and felt that the timeframe was right, 92.7% would recommend the seminar to colleagues. 68.3% fully agreed that by attending the seminar they were able to improve their didactic skills, 90% were confident that they could integrate what they had learned into their work as general practice trainers. 85.4% stated that they had reflected on their role as trainers. In particular, the atmosphere, the high degree of interactivity and the protected framework for collegial exchange were positively emphasized. Conclusion: Together with the Berlin chamber of physicians, we succeeded in designing a train the trainer seminar which, on the one hand, met the needs of the general practice trainers for clarification of formal-legal questions of their further training activities and, on the other hand, allowed the further development of didactic skills. At the moment, a modular program is being planned in order to give general practice trainers the opportunity to expand their didactic competence and regularly exchange ideas with colleagues.
