Investigating the Association between Outdoor Environment and Outdoor Activities for Seniors Living in Old Residential Communities.

ABSTRACT: Many seniors live in old residential communities (ORCs) with low-quality outdoor environment (OE), which hinders the residents' outdoor daily activities (ODAs). This paper empirically investigates the association of OE on ODAs for seniors living in ORCs. A questionnaire was designed and distributed in six central districts of Nanjing city. A total of 258 questionnaires was finally collected, of which 60.08%, 29.46%, 9.69%, and 0.78% respondents were scattered into four age groups (61-69, 70-79, 80-89, and ≥90), respectively. Based on reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis, the results show that: (1) social activities are mainly associated with noise; (2) leisure activities are significantly associated with road accessibility, slip-resistance measures, greenery, and staff; (3) utilitarian-type activities are significantly associated with stairway accessibility, slip-resistance measures, greenery, and seating; (4) there is a significant association between nature-exposure activities and layout, greenery, and poor air quality. The findings could guide Chinese officials when renewing ORCs by addressing the most important outdoor environmental factors associated with ODAs.

Project description:BackgroundChina is presently facing the challenge of meeting enormous health demands because of its rapidly aging society. Enrolling older persons in eldercare institutions is a helpful alternative for relieving family caregivers and promoting healthy aging. However, changes in the living environment may negatively affect the mental health of the elderly.ObjectiveTo explore the association between different living arrangements and depressive symptoms among over-65-year-old people in China and the moderating role of outdoor activities.MethodThe 2018 wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) used a mixed sampling method to collect the health and demographic information of 15,874 older adults over 65 years from 23 provinces in China. After considering this study's inclusion and exclusion criteria, the final sample comprised 12,200 participants. The participants' risk of depressive symptoms was assessed using the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10). The potential association between the two elements was tested using a regression model.ResultThis study's findings suggested a significant relationship between depressive symptoms and living arrangements (P < 0.001). Participants living alone and those living in eldercare institutions had 1.26-times (95%CI: 1.10-1.44) and 1.39-times (95%CI: 1.09-1.77) higher risks of depressive symptoms, respectively, than those living with household members. Outdoor activities play a moderating role between different living arrangements and depressive symptoms. Among participants who engaged in outdoor activities, no significant difference was observed in the risk of depressive symptoms between those living in eldercare institutions and those living with household members (adjusted odds ratio = 1.15, 95%CI = 0.81-1.64, P = 0.426).ConclusionThe high risk of depressive symptoms among older Chinese people living alone or in eldercare institutions requires considerable attention. The evidence from this study suggests that older people living alone and those living in eldercare institutions should regularly engage in appropriate outdoor activities.

Project description:BackgroundLittle was known about the relationship between perceived neighborhood environment and depression among residents living in mega-communities. Furthermore, the mediating effects of physical activity (PA) and anxiety in this relationship have not been investigated. Thus, this study aimed to comprehensively examine the association between perceived neighborhood environment and depression among residents living in mega-communities, and test whether PA and anxiety mediated the association.MethodsA cross-sectional study on perceived neighborhood environment and depression was conducted among individuals who lived in mega-communities (n = 665) in Guiyang, China from July to August 2022. Perceived neighborhood environment was assessed from the following six aspects: traffic, building quality, accessibility, neighborhood, indoor, and pollution. Depression was measured by the Patients Health Questionnaire-9. Structural equation model was used to evaluate the association between perceived neighborhood environment and depression, and test the mediating effect of PA and anxiety in this association.ResultsWe found that neighborhood (β = -0.144, p = 0.002) and PA (β = -0.074, p < 0.001) were both negatively associated with depression, while anxiety was positively associated with depression (β = 0.447, p < 0.001). Married residents were less likely to experience depression than residents of other marital status. PA played a mediator role in the relationship between accessibility and depression (β = 0.014, p = 0.033). PA mediated the relationship between neighborhood and depression (β = -0.032, p = 0.015). The mediating effect of anxiety in the relationship between perceived neighborhood environment and depression was not significant.ConclusionsThis study demonstrated that neighborhood, which was assessed by satisfaction with safety, hygiene, parking, greening, lighting, and building shape, was negatively associated with depression, and PA mediated the relationship.

Project description:Background: In different parts of the world new models of senior housing have rapidly appeared, which indicates that existing housing and care models are not fulfilling the hopes and needs of current and new generations of older people. Material and Methods: This qualitative study focuses on one type of communal senior housing complex located in a mid-sized town in Central Finland. The complex was designed to have accessible low-maintenance apartments and common spaces, and to be near easily accessible green spaces, amenities, services, and public transport. The complex has a part-time community coordinator. The minimum age limit is set at 55 years. The data consists of 36 qualitative interviews with residents (21 women, 15 men) aged 66-93, conducted between November 2018 and February 2019. The semi-structured interviews were recorded and transcribed. The data analysis focused on how different aspects of the manmade, natural, and social environment were portrayed in residents' descriptions of day-to-day life. Theoretical framework adopted for the study draws from the ideas of environmental and geographic gerontology. The data was analyzed using positioning analysis which is one form of discourse analysis. Results: The senior housing in this study fulfilled its promise of providing accessible a physical and social environment which encourages and enables residents to be physically active and independent, yet which also provides social activities and feeling safe. In this respect, the senior housing complex offered an environment which supports well-being and healthy aging. However, the residents' interpretations of what the senior housing complex represented varied. For some of the residents it was first and foremost a social place, which provided opportunities for social contacts and social activities. For some of the residents the most important were maintenance-free apartments and outdoor areas. The question remains as to how social practices, in the form of government policies and market systems can support the development of different kinds of senior housing which are affordable and accessible for all.
