Eco-friendly methoximation of aromatic aldehydes and ketones using MnCl₂.4H₂O as an easily accessible and efficient catalyst.

ABSTRACT: Methoximes are important as a class of intermediates and products, among fine chemicals and specialties. The development of a new, facile and efficient method for their synthesis is reported. The methoximes were properly accessed from the corresponding aromatic aldehydes and ketones in good to excellent yields, under mild conditions, employing the inexpensive and environmentally friendly MnCl₂.4H₂O as a catalyst (at low loading and without the addition of ligand), in EtOH at 50°C. The scope of the process was systematically assessed.

Project description:The use of CeCl3·7H2O as an efficient and eco-friendly promoter for the convenient synthesis of methoximes derived from aromatic aldehydes and ketones, is reported. The transformations entail the use of equimolar amounts of MeONH2·HCl and NaOAc in EtOH at 50°C, and no special precautions are needed with regard to the presence of oxygen. The scope and limitations of the transformation were studied and a reaction mechanism was proposed.

Metal-free trifluoromethylation of aromatic and heteroaromatic aldehydes and ketones.

Project description:The ability to convert simple and common substrates into fluoroalkyl derivatives under mild conditions remains an important goal for medicinal and agricultural chemists. One representative example of a desirable transformation involves the conversion of aromatic and heteroaromatic ketones and aldehydes into aryl and heteroaryl β,β,β-trifluoroethylarenes and -heteroarenes. The traditional approach for this net transformation involves stoichiometric metals and/or multistep reaction sequences that consume excessive time, material, and labor resources while providing low yields of products. To complement these traditional strategies, we report a one-pot metal-free decarboxylative procedure for accessing β,β,β-trifluoroethylarenes and -heteroarenes from readily available ketones and aldehydes. This method features several benefits, including ease of operation, readily available reagents, mild reaction conditions, high functional-group compatibility, and scalability.

Eco-friendly synthesis and antiproliferative evaluation of some oxygen substituted diaryl ketones.

Project description:A broad variety of oxygen-substituted diaryl ketones has been synthesized by solar energy-induced Friedel Crafts acylations of 1,4-benzo- and 1,4-naphthoquinones with benzaldehydes. The in vitro antiproliferative properties of the photoproducts were assessed on prostate (DU-145), bladder (T24) and breast (MCF7) human-derived tumor cell lines and compared to non-tumor mouse fibroblasts (Balb/3T3). Among the tested compounds, it was found that those containing a 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl A-ring, such as 12 and 22 are more active on DU-145, with EC50 values of 1.2 and 5.9 ?M, respectively. By comparing their effects on the three cancer cell lines, the analogue 22 has the best mean selective index (2.4).

Easily accessible non-aromatic heterocycles with handles: 4-bromo-2,3-dihydrofurans from 1,2-dibromohomoallylic alcohols.

Project description:The first general preparation of 4-bromo-2,3-dihydrofurans is reported. These non-aromatic heterocycles containing a useful coupling handle are accessed via Cu-catalyzed intramolecular cyclization of 1,2-dibromohomoallylic alcohols, which are themselves available in just two steps from aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes and ketones. Molecular dynamics simulations using the simple substrates and key geometric parameters provide a rationale for the selectivities observed. The synthetic utility of the 4-bromodihydrofurans is also demonstrated.

Hydrogenation of aromatic ketones, aldehydes, and epoxides with hydrogen and Pd(0)EnCat 30NP.

Project description:Aromatic aldehydes and ketones as well as aromatic epoxides are selectively reduced to the corresponding alcohols under mild conditions using conventional hydrogen in the presence of Pd(0)EnCat 30NP catalyst. The reactions were performed at room temperature during 16 hours with high to excellent conversions of the corresponding products.

Dual cobalt-copper light-driven catalytic reduction of aldehydes and aromatic ketones in aqueous media.

Project description:We present an efficient, general, fast, and robust light-driven methodology based on earth-abundant elements to reduce aryl ketones, and both aryl and aliphatic aldehydes (up to 1400 TON). The catalytic system consists of a robust and well-defined aminopyridyl cobalt complex active for photocatalytic water reduction and the [Cu(bathocuproine)(Xantphos)](PF6) photoredox catalyst. The dual cobalt-copper system uses visible light as the driving-force and H2O and an electron donor (Et3N or iPr2EtN) as the hydride source. The catalytic system operates in aqueous mixtures (80-60% water) with high selectivity towards the reduction of organic substrates (>2000) vs. water reduction, and tolerates O2. High selectivity towards the hydrogenation of aryl ketones is observed in the presence of terminal olefins, aliphatic ketones, and alkynes. Remarkably, the catalytic system also shows unique selectivity for the reduction of acetophenone in the presence of aliphatic aldehydes. The catalytic system provides a simple and convenient method to obtain ?,?-deuterated alcohols. Both the observed reactivity and the DFT modelling support a common cobalt hydride intermediate. The DFT modelled energy profile for the [Co-H] nucleophilic attack to acetophenone and water rationalises the competence of [CoII-H] to reduce acetophenone in the presence of water. Mechanistic studies suggest alternative mechanisms depending on the redox potential of the substrate. These results show the potential of the water reduction catalyst [Co(OTf)(Py2Tstacn)](OTf) (1), (Py2Tstacn = 1,4-di(picolyl)-7-(p-toluenesulfonyl)-1,4,7-triazacyclononane, OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate anion) to develop light-driven selective organic transformations and fine solar chemicals.

Diastereo- and enantioselective reactions of bis(pinacolato)diboron, 1,3-enynes, and aldehydes catalyzed by an easily accessible bisphosphine-Cu complex.

Project description:Catalytic enantioselective multicomponent processes involving bis(pinacolato)diboron [B2(pin)2], 1,3-enynes, and aldehydes are disclosed; the resulting compounds contain a primary C-B(pin) bond, as well as alkyne- and hydroxyl-substituted tertiary carbon stereogenic centers. A critical feature is the initial enantioselective Cu-B(pin) addition to an alkyne-substituted terminal alkene. This and other key mechanistic issues have been investigated by DFT calculations. Reactions are promoted by the Cu complex of a commercially available enantiomerically pure bis-phosphine and are complete in 8 h at ambient temperature; products are generated in 66-94% yield (after oxidation or catalytic cross-coupling), 90:10 to >98:2 diastereomeric ratio, and 85:15-99:1 enantiomeric ratio. Aryl-, heteroaryl-, alkenyl-, and alkyl-substituted aldehydes and enynes can be used. Utility is illustrated through catalytic alkylation and arylation of the organoboron products as well as applications to synthesis of fragments of tylonolide and mycinolide IV.

Mild deoxygenation of aromatic ketones and aldehydes over Pd/C using polymethylhydrosiloxane as the reducing agent.

Project description:Herein, a practical and mild method for the deoxygenation of a wide range of benzylic aldehydes and ketones is described, which utilizes heterogeneous Pd/C as the catalyst together with the green hydride source, polymethylhydrosiloxane. The developed catalytic protocol is scalable and robust, as exemplified by the deoxygenation of ethyl vanillin, which was performed on a 30 mmol scale in an open-to-air setup using only 0.085 mol % Pd/C catalyst to furnish the corresponding deoxygenated product in 93 % yield within 3 hours at room temperature. Furthermore, the Pd/C catalyst was shown to be recyclable up to 6 times without any observable decrease in efficiency and it exhibited low metal leaching under the reaction conditions.

Yeast Protein as an Easily Accessible Food Source.

Project description:In recent years, the awareness and willingness of consumers to consume healthy food has grown significantly. In order to meet these needs, scientists are looking for innovative methods of food production, which is a source of easily digestible protein with a balanced amino acid composition. Yeast protein biomass (single cell protein, SCP) is a bioavailable product which is obtained when primarily using as a culture medium inexpensive various waste substrates including agricultural and industrial wastes. With the growing population, yeast protein seems to be an attractive alternative to traditional protein sources such as plants and meat. Moreover, yeast protein biomass also contains trace minerals and vitamins including B-group. Thus, using yeast in the production of protein provides both valuable nutrients and enhances purification of wastes. In conclusion, nutritional yeast protein biomass may be the best option for human and animal nutrition with a low environmental footprint. The rapidly evolving SCP production technology and discoveries from the world of biotechnology can make a huge difference in the future for the key improvement of hunger problems and the possibility of improving world food security. On the market of growing demand for cheap and environmentally clean SCP protein with practically unlimited scale of production, it may soon become one of the ingredients of our food. The review article presents the possibilities of protein production by yeast groups with the use of various substrates as well as the safety of yeast protein used as food.
