Analog hardware trojan design and detection in OFDM based wireless cryptographic ICs.

ABSTRACT: Due to Hardware Trojan (HT), trustworthiness of Integrated Circuit (IC) supply chain is a burning issue in Semiconductor Industry nowadays. Over the last decade, extensive research has been carried on HT detection methods for digital circuits. However, the HT issue remains largely unexplored in the domain of Analog Mixed Signal (AMS)/ RF circuit where it is now an appealing target for the attackers. The increasing popularity of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based wireless cryptographic ICs in modern communication systems makes it a lucrative target for HT-based attacks which could have a devastating impact on data security. This paper presents a trigger-based Hardware Trojan Threat model that exploits the extended cyclic prefix (ECP) property of the OFDM communication scheme to leak the secret encryption key over low noise Additive White Gaussian Channel (AWGN) and developed a Cyclic Prefix (CP) checker based detection mechanism named "SENTRY" to detect such trojans once it is triggered.

A Viterbi decoder and its hardware Trojan models: an FPGA-based implementation study.

Project description:Integrated circuits may be vulnerable to hardware Trojan attacks during its design or fabrication phases. This article is a case study of the design of a Viterbi decoder and the effect of hardware Trojans on a coded communication system employing the Viterbi decoder. Design of a Viterbi decoder and possible hardware Trojan models for the same are proposed. An FPGA-based implementation of the decoder and the associated Trojan circuits have been discussed. The noise-added encoded input data stream is stored in the block RAM of the FPGA and the decoded data stream is monitored on the PC through an universal asynchronous receiver transmitter interface. The implementation results show that there is barely any change in the LUTs used (0.5%) and power dissipation (3%) due to the insertion of the proposed Trojan circuits, thus establishing the surreptitious nature of the Trojan. In spite of the fact that the Trojans cause negligible changes in the circuit parameters, there are significant changes in the bit error rate (BER) due to the presence of Trojans. In the absence of Trojans, BER drops down to zero for signal to noise rations (SNRs) higher than 6 dB, but with the presence of Trojans, BER doesn't reduce to zero even at a very high SNRs. This is true even with the Trojan being activated only once during the entire duration of the transmission.

Transferable learning on analog hardware.

Project description:While analog neural network (NN) accelerators promise massive energy and time savings, an important challenge is to make them robust to static fabrication error. Present-day training methods for programmable photonic interferometer circuits, a leading analog NN platform, do not produce networks that perform well in the presence of static hardware errors. Moreover, existing hardware error correction techniques either require individual retraining of every analog NN (which is impractical in an edge setting with millions of devices), place stringent demands on component quality, or introduce hardware overhead. We solve all three problems by introducing one-time error-aware training techniques that produce robust NNs that match the performance of ideal hardware and can be exactly transferred to arbitrary highly faulty photonic NNs with hardware errors up to five times larger than present-day fabrication tolerances.

Scalable network emulation on analog neuromorphic hardware.

Project description:We present a novel software feature for the BrainScaleS-2 accelerated neuromorphic platform that facilitates the partitioned emulation of large-scale spiking neural networks. This approach is well suited for deep spiking neural networks and allows for sequential model emulation on undersized neuromorphic resources if the largest recurrent subnetwork and the required neuron fan-in fit on the substrate. We demonstrate the training of two deep spiking neural network models-using the MNIST and EuroSAT datasets-that exceed the physical size constraints of a single-chip BrainScaleS-2 system. The ability to emulate and train networks larger than the substrate provides a pathway for accurate performance evaluation in planned or scaled systems, ultimately advancing the development and understanding of large-scale models and neuromorphic computing architectures.

2D MoS<sub>2</sub>-based reconfigurable analog hardware.

Project description:Biological neural circuits demonstrate exceptional adaptability to diverse tasks by dynamically adjusting neural connections to efficiently process information. However, current two-dimension materials-based neuromorphic hardware mainly focuses on specific devices to individually mimic artificial synapse or heterosynapse or soma and encoding the inner neural states to realize corresponding mock object function. Recent advancements suggest that integrating multiple two-dimension material devices to realize brain-like functions including the inter-mutual connecting assembly engineering has become a new research trend. In this work, we demonstrate a two-dimension MoS2-based reconfigurable analog hardware that emulate synaptic, heterosynaptic, and somatic functionalities. The inner-states and inter-connections of all modules co-encode versatile functions such as analog-to-digital/digital-to-analog conversion, and linear/nonlinear computations including integration, vector-matrix multiplication, convolution, to name a few. By assembling the functions to fit with different environment-interactive demanding tasks, this hardware experimentally achieves the reconstruction and image sharpening of medical images for diagnosis as well as circuit-level imitation of attention-switching and visual residual mechanisms for smart perception. This innovative hardware promotes the development of future general-purpose computing machines with high adaptability and flexibility to multiple tasks.

Scan-Chain-Fault Diagnosis Using Regressions in Cryptographic Chips for Wireless Sensor Networks.

Project description:Scan structures, which are widely used in cryptographic circuits for wireless sensor networks applications, are essential for testing very-large-scale integration (VLSI) circuits. Faults in cryptographic circuits can be effectively screened out by improving testability and test coverage using a scan structure. Additionally, scan testing contributes to yield improvement by identifying fault locations. However, faults in circuits cannot be tested when a fault occurs in the scan structure. Moreover, various defects occurring early in the manufacturing process are expressed as faults of scan chains. Therefore, scan-chain diagnosis is crucial. However, it is difficult to obtain a sufficiently high diagnosis resolution and accuracy through the conventional scan-chain diagnosis. Therefore, this article proposes a novel scan-chain diagnosis method using regression and fan-in and fan-out filters that require shorter training and diagnosis times than existing scan-chain diagnoses do. The fan-in and fan-out filters, generated using a circuit logic structure, can highlight important features and remove unnecessary features from raw failure vectors, thereby converting the raw failure vectors to fan-in and fan-out vectors without compromising the diagnosis accuracy. Experimental results confirm that the proposed scan-chain-diagnosis method can efficiently provide higher resolutions and accuracies with shorter training and diagnosis times.

Design of AI-Enhanced and Hardware-Supported Multimodal E-Skin for Environmental Object Recognition and Wireless Toxic Gas Alarm.

Project description:Post-earthquake rescue missions are full of challenges due to the unstable structure of ruins and successive aftershocks. Most of the current rescue robots lack the ability to interact with environments, leading to low rescue efficiency. The multimodal electronic skin (e-skin) proposed not only reproduces the pressure, temperature, and humidity sensing capabilities of natural skin but also develops sensing functions beyond it-perceiving object proximity and NO2 gas. Its multilayer stacked structure based on Ecoflex and organohydrogel endows the e-skin with mechanical properties similar to natural skin. Rescue robots integrated with multimodal e-skin and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms show strong environmental perception capabilities and can accurately distinguish objects and identify human limbs through grasping, laying the foundation for automated post-earthquake rescue. Besides, the combination of e-skin and NO2 wireless alarm circuits allows robots to sense toxic gases in the environment in real time, thereby adopting appropriate measures to protect trapped people from the toxic environment. Multimodal e-skin powered by AI algorithms and hardware circuits exhibits powerful environmental perception and information processing capabilities, which, as an interface for interaction with the physical world, dramatically expands intelligent robots' application scenarios.

Hardware Design for Autonomous Bayesian Networks.

Project description:Directed acyclic graphs or Bayesian networks that are popular in many AI-related sectors for probabilistic inference and causal reasoning can be mapped to probabilistic circuits built out of probabilistic bits (p-bits), analogous to binary stochastic neurons of stochastic artificial neural networks. In order to satisfy standard statistical results, individual p-bits not only need to be updated sequentially but also in order from the parent to the child nodes, necessitating the use of sequencers in software implementations. In this article, we first use SPICE simulations to show that an autonomous hardware Bayesian network can operate correctly without any clocks or sequencers, but only if the individual p-bits are appropriately designed. We then present a simple behavioral model of the autonomous hardware illustrating the essential characteristics needed for correct sequencer-free operation. This model is also benchmarked against SPICE simulations and can be used to simulate large-scale networks. Our results could be useful in the design of hardware accelerators that use energy-efficient building blocks suited for low-level implementations of Bayesian networks. The autonomous massively parallel operation of our proposed stochastic hardware has biological relevance since neural dynamics in brain is also stochastic and autonomous by nature.

Design of a Fatigue Detection System for High-Speed Trains Based on Driver Vigilance Using a Wireless Wearable EEG.

Project description:The vigilance of the driver is important for railway safety, despite not being included in the safety management system (SMS) for high-speed train safety. In this paper, a novel fatigue detection system for high-speed train safety based on monitoring train driver vigilance using a wireless wearable electroencephalograph (EEG) is presented. This system is designed to detect whether the driver is drowsiness. The proposed system consists of three main parts: (1) a wireless wearable EEG collection; (2) train driver vigilance detection; and (3) early warning device for train driver. In the first part, an 8-channel wireless wearable brain-computer interface (BCI) device acquires the locomotive driver's brain EEG signal comfortably under high-speed train-driving conditions. The recorded data are transmitted to a personal computer (PC) via Bluetooth. In the second step, a support vector machine (SVM) classification algorithm is implemented to determine the vigilance level using the Fast Fourier transform (FFT) to extract the EEG power spectrum density (PSD). In addition, an early warning device begins to work if fatigue is detected. The simulation and test results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed fatigue detection system for high-speed train safety.

Wireless fluorescence capsule for endoscopy using single photon-based detection.

Project description:Fluorescence Imaging (FI) is a powerful technique in biological science and clinical medicine. Current FI devices that are used either for in-vivo or in-vitro studies are expensive, bulky and consume substantial power, confining the technique to laboratories and hospital examination rooms. Here we present a miniaturised wireless fluorescence endoscope capsule with low power consumption that will pave the way for future FI systems and applications. With enhanced sensitivity compared to existing technology we have demonstrated that the capsule can be successfully used to image tissue autofluorescence and targeted fluorescence via fluorophore labelling of tissues. The capsule incorporates a state-of-the-art complementary metal oxide semiconductor single photon avalanche detector imaging array, miniaturised optical isolation, wireless technology and low power design. When in use the capsule consumes only 30.9 mW, and deploys very low-level 468 nm illumination. The device has the potential to replace highly power-hungry intrusive optical fibre based endoscopes and to extend the range of clinical examination below the duodenum. To demonstrate the performance of our capsule, we imaged fluorescence phantoms incorporating principal tissue fluorophores (flavins) and absorbers (haemoglobin). We also demonstrated the utility of marker identification by imaging a 20 μM fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) labelling solution on mammalian tissue.

Design of dynamic ski motion capture and human posture detection model based on spatio-temporal Transformer and wireless device tracking technology.

Project description:As a result of significant advancements in living conditions, individuals have redirected their attention towards physical exercise. Skiing, as a widely popular sport, necessitates the real-time maintenance of correct posture during movement. Therefore, we present a dynamic skiing motion capture and human posture detection model that leverages wireless device tracking. Primarily, personnel tracking is enabled through the construction of service base stations and the utilization of wireless device tracking technology. Subsequently, a human posture detection model is formulated in the form of human posture key points, employing the image information of each frame obtained via wireless devices. Finally, we introduce a spatio-temporal Transformer structure that facilitates the detection and recognition of human posture in consecutive frames. Our results demonstrate that our approach can precisely locate and track the position of skiing personnel. Compared to the latest Blip and Conformer methods, our technique yields F values that surpass them by 1.20% and 4.51%, respectively. Moreover, our model can achieve convergent model parameters and accomplish training objectives more efficiently, thus enabling posture detection and dynamic capture of skiing personnel via image and video information.
