Automation and sectoral reallocation.

ABSTRACT: Empirical evidence in Dauth et al. (J Eur Econ Assoc, 2021) suggests that industrial robot adoption in Germany has led to a sectoral reallocation of employment from manufacturing to services, leaving total employment unaffected. We rationalize this evidence through the lens of a general equilibrium model with two sectors, matching frictions and endogenous participation. Automation induces firms to create fewer vacancies and job seekers to search less in the automatable sector (manufacturing). The service sector expands due to the sectoral complementarity in the production of the final good and a positive wealth effect for the household. Analysis across steady states shows that the reduction in manufacturing employment can be offset by the increase in service employment. The model can also replicate the magnitude of the decline in the ratio of manufacturing employment to service employment in Germany between 1994 and 2014.

The inflationary effects of sectoral reallocation.

Project description:The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an unprecedented shift of consumption from services to goods. We study this demand reallocation in a multi-sector model featuring sticky prices, input-output linkages, and labor reallocation costs. Reallocation costs hamper the increase in the supply of goods, causing inflationary pressures. These pressures are amplified by the fact that goods prices are more flexible than services prices. We estimate the model allowing for demand reallocation, sectoral productivity, and aggregate labor supply shocks. The demand reallocation shock explains a large portion of the rise in U.S. inflation in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Business dynamism, sectoral reallocation and productivity in a pandemic.

Project description:Asymmetric effects across sectors are the distinctive features of the Covid-19 shock. An Epidemiological-Industry Dynamic model with heterogeneous firms and endogenous firms dynamics mimics the deep recession suffered by sectors characterized by high exposure, the reallocation of entry and exit opportunities across sectors, and the dynamics of aggregate productivity during the first wave of the pandemic. The cleansing effect induced by the Covid-19 crisis is sector-specific. Monetary policy and sticky wages are central ingredients to capture reallocation effects. Social distancing, by smoothing out cleansing in the social sector, slows down the reallocation process and prolongs the recession, but saves lives.

Adaptive automation: automatically (dis)engaging automation during visually distracted driving.

Project description:BackgroundAutomated driving is often proposed as a solution to human errors. However, fully automated driving has not yet reached the point where it can be implemented in real traffic. This study focused on adaptively allocating steering control either to the driver or to an automated pilot based on momentary driver distraction measured from an eye tracker.MethodsParticipants (N = 31) steered a simulated vehicle with a fixed speed, and at specific moments were required to perform a visual secondary task (i.e., changing a CD). Three conditions were tested: (1) Manual driving (Manual), in which participants steered themselves. (2) An automated backup (Backup) condition, consisting of manual steering except during periods of visual distraction, where the driver was backed up by automated steering. (3) A forced manual drive (Forced) condition, consisting of automated steering except during periods of visual distraction, where the driver was forced into manual steering. In all three conditions, the speed of the vehicle was automatically kept at 70 km/h throughout the drive.ResultsThe Backup condition showed a decrease in mean and maximum absolute lateral error compared to the Manual condition. The Backup condition also showed the lowest self-reported workload ratings and yielded a higher acceptance rating than the Forced condition. The Forced condition showed a higher maximum absolute lateral error than the Backup condition.DiscussionIn conclusion, the Backup condition was well accepted, and significantly improved performance when compared to the Manual and Forced conditions. Future research could use a higher level of simulator fidelity and a higher-quality eye-tracker.

Protein design automation.

Project description:We have conceived and implemented a cyclical protein design strategy that couples theory, computation, and experimental testing. The combinatorially large number of possible sequences and the incomplete understanding of the factors that control protein structure are the primary obstacles in protein design. Our protein design automation algorithm objectively predicts protein sequences likely to achieve a desired fold. Using a rotamer description of the side chains, we implemented a fast discrete search algorithm based on the Dead-End Elimination Theorem to rapidly find the globally optimal sequence in its optimal geometry from the vast number of possible solutions. Rotamer sequences were scored for steric complementarity using a van der Waals potential. A Monte Carlo search was then executed, starting at the optimal sequence, in order to find other high-scoring sequences. As a test of the design methodology, high-scoring sequences were found for the buried hydrophobic residues of a homodimeric coiled coil based on GCN4-p1. The corresponding peptides were synthesized and characterized by CD spectroscopy and size-exclusion chromatography. All peptides were dimeric and nearly 100% helical at 1 degree C, with melting temperatures ranging from 24 degrees C to 57 degrees C. A quantitative structure activity relation analysis was performed on the designed peptides, and a significant correlation was found with surface area burial. Incorporation of a buried surface area potential in the scoring of sequences greatly improved the correlation between predicted and measured stabilities and demonstrated experimental feedback in a complete design cycle.

Protein fabrication automation.

Project description:Facile "writing" of DNA fragments that encode entire gene sequences potentially has widespread applications in biological analysis and engineering. Rapid writing of open reading frames (ORFs) for expressed proteins could transform protein engineering and production for protein design, synthetic biology, and structural analysis. Here we present a process, protein fabrication automation (PFA), which facilitates the rapid de novo construction of any desired ORF from oligonucleotides with low effort, high speed, and little human interaction. PFA comprises software for sequence design, data management, and the generation of instruction sets for liquid-handling robotics, a liquid-handling robot, a robust PCR scheme for gene assembly from synthetic oligonucleotides, and a genetic selection system to enrich correctly assembled full-length synthetic ORFs. The process is robust and scalable.

Designing combinatorial exchanges for the reallocation of resource rights.

Project description:We describe the design and implementation of a combinatorial exchange for trading catch shares in New South Wales, Australia. The exchange ended a decades-long political debate by providing a market-based response to a major policy problem faced by fisheries worldwide: the reallocation of catch shares in cap-and-trade programs designed to prevent overfishing. The exchange was conducted over the Internet to lower participation costs and allowed for all-or-nothing orders to avoid fragmented share portfolios. A subsidy was distributed endogenously to facilitate the transfer of shares from inactive to active fishers. Finally, prices were linear and anonymous to ensure that sellers of identical packages received the same payments. These features were crucial to mitigate economic distortions from introducing catch shares and to gain broad acceptance of the program. However, they led to computationally challenging allocation and pricing problems. The exchange operated from May to July 2017 and effectively reallocated shares from inactive fishers to those who needed them most: 86% of active fishers' bids were matched and their share deficits were reduced by 95% in high-priority share classes. Similar reallocation problems arise in fisheries with catch-share systems worldwide as well as in other cap-and-trade systems for resource rights, e.g., water and pollution rights. The implemented exchange illustrates how computational optimization and market design can provide policy tools, able to solve complex policy problems considered intractable only a few years ago.

3D-printed microfluidic automation.

Project description:Microfluidic automation - the automated routing, dispensing, mixing, and/or separation of fluids through microchannels - generally remains a slowly-spreading technology because device fabrication requires sophisticated facilities and the technology's use demands expert operators. Integrating microfluidic automation in devices has involved specialized multi-layering and bonding approaches. Stereolithography is an assembly-free, 3D-printing technique that is emerging as an efficient alternative for rapid prototyping of biomedical devices. Here we describe fluidic valves and pumps that can be stereolithographically printed in optically-clear, biocompatible plastic and integrated within microfluidic devices at low cost. User-friendly fluid automation devices can be printed and used by non-engineers as replacement for costly robotic pipettors or tedious manual pipetting. Engineers can manipulate the designs as digital modules into new devices of expanded functionality. Printing these devices only requires the digital file and electronic access to a printer.

Automation of Language Sample Analysis.

Project description:PurposeA major barrier to the wider use of language sample analysis (LSA) is the fact that transcription is very time intensive. Methods that can reduce the required time and effort could help in promoting the use of LSA for clinical practice and research.MethodThis article describes an automated pipeline, called Batchalign, that takes raw audio and creates full transcripts in Codes for the Human Analysis of Talk (CHAT) transcription format, complete with utterance- and word-level time alignments and morphosyntactic analysis. The pipeline only requires major human intervention for final checking. It combines a series of existing tools with additional novel reformatting processes. The steps in the pipeline are (a) automatic speech recognition, (b) utterance tokenization, (c) automatic corrections, (d) speaker ID assignment, (e) forced alignment, (f) user adjustments, and (g) automatic morphosyntactic and profiling analyses.ResultsFor work with recordings from adults with language disorders, six major results were obtained: (a) The word error rate was between 2.4% for controls and 3.4% for patients, (b) utterance tokenization accuracy was at the level reported for speakers without language disorders, (c) word-level diarization accuracy was at 93% for control participants and 83% for participants with language disorders, (d) utterance-level diarization accuracy based on word-level diarization was high, (e) adherence to CHAT format was fully accurate, and (f) human transcriber time was reduced by up to 75%.ConclusionThe pipeline dramatically shortens the time gap between data collection and data analysis and provides an output superior to that typically generated by human transcribers.

Measure cross-sectoral structural similarities from financial networks.

Project description:Auditing is a multi-billion dollar market, with auditors assessing the trustworthiness of financial data, contributing to financial stability in a more interconnected and faster-changing world. We measure cross-sectoral structural similarities between firms using microscopic real-world transaction data. We derive network representations of companies from their transaction datasets, and we compute an embedding vector for each network. Our approach is based on the analysis of 300+ real transaction datasets that provide auditors with relevant insights. We detect significant changes in bookkeeping structure and the similarity between clients. For various tasks, we obtain good classification accuracy. Moreover, closely related companies are near in the embedding space while different industries are further apart suggesting that the measure captures relevant aspects. Besides the direct applications in computational audit, we expect this approach to be of use at multiple scales, from firms to countries, potentially elucidating structural risks at a broader scale.

Sectoral volatility spillovers and their determinants in Vietnam

Project description:Using the vector autoregression (VAR) connectedness approach, this paper investigates dynamic volatility spillovers across 14 sectors in Vietnam’s stock market over the period 2012–2021. The study also explores the differences in sectoral spillovers before and after the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic. Additionally, the paper also investigates the effects of the current pandemic and macroeconomic fundamentals on intersectoral connectedness in Vietnam. Our findings show that volatility transmission across sectors fluctuates significantly over the research period and spikes during the Covid-19 pandemic. The total spillover index is approximately 64.23 per cent, indicating that volatility spillovers across the Vietnamese sectors are substantial. The risks from the stock market appear to spread quickly and easily across sectors in Vietnam. Among these 14 sectors, food, fisheries, and oil and gas act as net senders of risks while real estate and pharmacy are the greatest receivers of risk. The findings also confirm that the commerce, transportation, manufacturing, and service sectors are more sensitive to the Covid-19 pandemic crisis than other sectors in Vietnam. Furthermore, the empirical results show that an increase in daily Covid-19 infections increases volatility spillover across sectors. Policy implications have emerged based on these findings from this paper for the Vietnamese government and other emerging countries.
