Project description:ObjectivesThermoregulation is important for all age groups, and in neonates, it is considered a crucial event to adapt to extrauterine life. Therefore, using systems that provide frequent reminders in different ways in the field of thermoregulation can help thermal stability in neonates. The present study aimed to develop, implement, and evaluate a neonatal thermoregulation decision support system (DSS) as a web application.MethodsThe present research was a multi-method study because it included the three phases of development, implementation, and evaluation of the neonatal thermoregulation decision support web application. In the system designing phase, the waterfall model is used. The second and third phases of the study, implementation, and evaluation, were conducted as a quasi-experimental study.ResultsThe results of this study were presented in two parts: the developed web application, and the results of the evaluation of the web application. The results of the statistical tests revealed that the use of the web application had a positive and significant effect on both the adjustment of the temperature of the incubator (maintaining the neutral temperature) and the maintenance of the temperature of the neonate's body (p = 0.000).ConclusionsThese results indicate that a nurse's sensitization and guidance with a neonatal thermoregulation decision support system can help to effectively neonate thermoregulation and the nurse has brought the temperature care close to the standard care based on the conditions of each neonate.

Project description:Can you predict what people are going to do just by watching them? This is certainly difficult: it would require a clear mapping between observable indicators and unobservable cognitive states. In this report, we demonstrate how this is possible by monitoring eye gaze and pupil dilation, which predict dissociable biases during decision making. We quantified decision making using the drift diffusion model (DDM), which provides an algorithmic account of how evidence accumulation and response caution contribute to decisions through separate latent parameters of drift rate and decision threshold, respectively. We used a hierarchical Bayesian estimation approach to assess the single trial influence of observable physiological signals on these latent DDM parameters. Increased eye gaze dwell time specifically predicted an increased drift rate toward the fixated option, irrespective of the value of the option. In contrast, greater pupil dilation specifically predicted an increase in decision threshold during difficult decisions. These findings suggest that eye tracking and pupillometry reflect the operations of dissociated latent decision processes.

Project description:Eye tracking provides a quantitative measure of eye movements during different activities. We report the results from a bibliometric analysis to investigate trends in eye tracking research applied to the study of different medical conditions. We conducted a search on the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS) database and analyzed the dataset of 2456 retrieved articles using VOSviewer and the Bibliometrix R package. The most represented area was psychiatry (503, 20.5%) followed by neuroscience (465, 18.9%) and psychology developmental (337, 13.7%). The annual scientific production growth was 11.14% and showed exponential growth with three main peaks in 2011, 2015 and 2017. Extensive collaboration networks were identified between the three countries with the highest scientific production, the USA (35.3%), the UK (9.5%) and Germany (7.3%). Based on term co-occurrence maps and analyses of sources of articles, we identified autism spectrum disorders as the most investigated condition and conducted specific analyses on 638 articles related to this topic which showed an annual scientific production growth of 16.52%. The majority of studies focused on autism used eye tracking to investigate gaze patterns with regards to stimuli related to social interaction. Our analysis highlights the widespread and increasing use of eye tracking in the study of different neurological and psychiatric conditions.

Project description:BackgroundThere are ≈5 million annual dizziness visits to US emergency departments, of which vestibular strokes account for over 250 000. The head impulse, nystagmus, and test of skew eye examination can accurately distinguish vestibular strokes from peripheral dizziness. However, the eye-movement signs are subtle, and lack of familiarity and difficulty with recognition of abnormal eye movements are significant barriers to widespread emergency department use. To break this barrier, we sought to assess the accuracy of EyePhone, our smartphone eye-tracking application, for quantifying nystagmus.Methods and resultsWe prospectively enrolled healthy volunteers and recorded the velocity of induced nystagmus using a smartphone eye-tracking application (EyePhone) and then compared the results with video oculography (VOG). Following a calibration protocol, the participants viewed optokinetic stimuli with incremental velocities (2-12 degrees/s) in 4 directions. We extracted slow phase velocities from EyePhone data in each direction and compared them with the corresponding slow phase velocities obtained by the VOG. Furthermore, we calculated the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for nystagmus detection by EyePhone. We enrolled 10 volunteers (90% men) with an average age of 30.2±6 years. EyePhone-recorded slow phase velocities highly correlated with the VOG recordings (r=0.98 for horizontal and r=0.94 for vertical). The calibration significantly increased the slope of linear regression for horizontal and vertical slow phase velocities. Evaluating the EyePhone's performance using VOG data with a 2 degrees/s threshold showed an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.87 for horizontal and vertical nystagmus detection.ConclusionsWe demonstrated that EyePhone could accurately detect and quantify optokinetic nystagmus, similar to the VOG goggles.

Project description:AimsTo map the themes and methods of nursing researches involving eye-tracking as a measurement, and offer suggestion for future nursing research using eye-tracking.DesignWe conducted a scoping review following the methodology outlined in the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis on scoping reviews.MethodsEligibility criteria were established based on Population (involving nursing or nursing students), Concept (utilizing eye-tracking as a research method), and Context (in any setting). Articles were retrieved from the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, APA PsycInfo, and Scopus databases, spanning from database inception to November 17, 2023. The included studies were analysed using descriptive statistics and content analysis.ResultsAfter duplicates were removed, 815 citations were identified from searches of electronic databases and other resources, and 66 met the inclusion criteria finally. Thirty-eight studies were conducted in a simulated environment. Five application domains were identified, and most of the studies (N = 50) were observational. The domains found in our review did not cover all topics of nursing research in the same depth. Additionally, 39 studies did not solely explicate eye-tracking data but instead integrated behavioural measures, scales/questionnaires, or other physiological data.ConclusionsEye-tracking emerges as a significant research tool in uncovering visual behaviour, particularly in nursing research focused on nursing education. This study not only summarized the application and interpretation of eye-tracking data but also recognized its potential in advancing clinical nursing research and practice. To effectively harness the capabilities of eye-tracking in elucidating cognitive processes, future research should aim for a clearer grasp of the theoretical underpinnings of the addressed research problems and methodological choices. It is crucial to emphasize the standardization of eye-tracking method reporting and ensuring data quality. No Patient or Public Contribution.

Project description:Adolescence is often viewed as a time of irrational, risky decision-making - despite adolescents' competence in other cognitive domains. In this study, we examined the strategies used by adolescents (N=30) and young adults (N=47) to resolve complex, multi-outcome economic gambles. Compared to adults, adolescents were more likely to make conservative, loss-minimizing choices consistent with economic models. Eye-tracking data showed that prior to decisions, adolescents acquired more information in a more thorough manner; that is, they engaged in a more analytic processing strategy indicative of trade-offs between decision variables. In contrast, young adults' decisions were more consistent with heuristics that simplified the decision problem, at the expense of analytic precision. Collectively, these results demonstrate a counter-intuitive developmental transition in economic decision making: adolescents' decisions are more consistent with rational-choice models, while young adults more readily engage task-appropriate heuristics.

Project description:BackgroundAutomated clinical decision support systems (CDSS) are associated with improvements in health care delivery to those with long-term conditions, including diabetes. A CDSS was introduced to two Scottish regions (combined diabetes population ~30 000) via a national diabetes electronic health record. This study aims to describe users' reactions to the CDSS and to quantify impact on clinical processes and outcomes over two improvement cycles: December 2013 to February 2014 and August 2014 to November 2014.MethodsFeedback was sought via patient questionnaires, health care professional (HCP) focus groups, and questionnaires. Multivariable regression was used to analyze HCP SCI-Diabetes usage (with respect to CDSS message presence/absence) and case-control comparison of clinical processes/outcomes. Cases were patients whose HCP received a CDSS messages during the study period. Closely matched controls were selected from regions outside the study, following similar clinical practice (without CDSS). Clinical process measures were screening rates for diabetes-related complications. Clinical outcomes included HbA1c at 1 year.ResultsThe CDSS had no adverse impact on consultations. HCPs were generally positive toward CDSS and used it within normal clinical workflow. CDSS messages were generated for 5692 cases, matched to 10 667 controls. Following clinic, the probability of patients being appropriately screened for complications more than doubled for most measures. Mean HbA1c improved in cases and controls but more so in cases (-2.3 mmol/mol [-0.2%] versus -1.1 [-0.1%], P = .003).Discussion and conclusionsThe CDSS was well received; associated with improved efficiencies in working practices; and large improvements in guideline adherence. These evidence-based, early interventions can significantly reduce costly and devastating complications.

Project description:BackgroundToday, clinical decision support systems based on artificial intelligence can significantly help physicians in the correct diagnosis and quick rapid treatment of endophthalmitis as the most important cause of blindness in emergency diseases. This study aimed to design, develop, and evaluate an intelligent decision support system for acute postoperative endophthalmitis.MethodsThis study was conducted in 2020-2021 in three phases: analysis, design and development, and evaluation. The user needs and the features of the system were identified through interviews with end users. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The list of clinical signs of acute postoperative endophthalmitis was provided to ophthalmologists for prioritization. 4 algorithms support vector machine, decision tree classifier, k-nearest neighbors, and random forest were used in the design of the computing core of the system for disease diagnosis. The acute postoperative endophthalmitis diagnosis application was developed for using by physicians and patients. Based on the data of 60 acute postoperative endophthalmitis patients, 143 acute postoperative endophthalmitis records and 12 non-acute postoperative endophthalmitis records were identified. The learning process of the algorithm was performed on 70% of the data and 30% of the data was used for evaluation.ResultsThe most important features of the application for physicians were selecting clinical signs and symptoms, predicting diagnosis based on artificial intelligence, physician-patient communication, selecting the appropriate treatment, and easy access to scientific resources. The results of the usability evaluation showed that the application was good with a mean (± SD) score of 7.73 ± 0.53 out of 10.ConclusionA decision support system with accuracy, precision, sensitivity and specificity, negative predictive values, F-measure and area under precision-recall curve 100% was created thanks to widespread participation, the use of clinical specialists' experiences and their awareness of patients' needs, as well as the availability of a comprehensive acute postoperative endophthalmitis clinical dataset.

Project description:BackgroundDiscrete choice experiments (DCEs) are increasingly used to elicit preferences for benefit-risk tradeoffs. The primary aim of this study was to explore how eye-tracking methods can be used to understand DCE respondents' decision-making strategies. A secondary aim was to explore if the presentation and communication of risk affected respondents' choices.MethodTwo versions of a DCE were designed to understand the preferences of female members of the public for breast screening that varied in how risk attributes were presented. Risk was communicated as either 1) percentages or 2) icon arrays and percentages. Eye-tracking equipment recorded eye movements 1000 times a second. A debriefing survey collected sociodemographics and self-reported attribute nonattendance (ANA) data. A heteroskedastic conditional logit model analyzed DCE data. Eye-tracking data on pupil size, direction of motion, and total visual attention (dwell time) to predefined areas of interest were analyzed using ordinary least squares regressions.ResultsForty women completed the DCE with eye-tracking. There was no statistically significant difference in attention (fixations) to attributes between the risk communication formats. Respondents completing either version of the DCE with the alternatives presented in columns made more horizontal (left-right) saccades than vertical (up-down). Eye-tracking data confirmed self-reported ANA to the risk attributes with a 40% reduction in mean dwell time to the "probability of detecting a cancer" ( P = 0.001) and a 25% reduction to the "risk of unnecessary follow-up" ( P = 0.008).ConclusionThis study is one of the first to show how eye-tracking can be used to understand responses to a health care DCE and highlighted the potential impact of risk communication on respondents' decision-making strategies. The results suggested self-reported ANA to cost attributes may not be reliable.

Project description:Recent progress in the development of mobile Eye Tracking (ET) systems shows that there is a demand for modern flexible solutions that would allow for dynamic tracking of objects in the video stream. The paper describes a newly developed tool for work with ET glasses, and its advantages are outlined with the example of a pilot study. A flight task is performed on the FNTP II MCC simulator, and the pilots are equipped with the Mobile Tobii Glasses. The proposed Smart Trainer tool performs dynamic object tracking in a registered video stream, allowing for an interactive definition of Area of Interest (AOI) with blurred contours for the individual cockpit instruments and for the construction of corresponding histograms of pilot attention. The studies are carried out on a group of experienced pilots with a professional pilot CPL(A) license with instrumental flight (Instrument Rating (IR)) certification and a group of pilots without instrumental training. The experimental section shows the differences in the perception of the flight process between two distinct groups of pilots with varying levels in flight training for the ATPL(A) line pilot license. The proposed Smart Trainer tool might be exploited in order to assess and improve the process of training operators of advanced systems with human machine interfaces.
