Fast synthesis and redox switching of di- and tetra-substituted bisthioxanthylidene overcrowded alkenes.

ABSTRACT: A rapid and efficient method for the synthesis of overcrowded alkenes using (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane provides a range of substituted bisthioxanthylidenes. We show large conformational redox switching from folded to orthogonal states, which tolerates many substitution patterns. The facile access to bisthioxanthylidene switches with the potential for further functionalization, in combination with the reliable redox chemistry, provides major opportunities for the design of electrochemically responsive systems.

Mix and Match Tuning of the Conformational and Multistate Redox Switching Properties of an Overcrowded Alkene.

Project description:Overcrowded alkenes have received considerable attention as versatile structural motifs in a range of optical switches and light-driven unidirectional motors. In contrast, their actuation by electrochemical stimuli remains underexplored, even though this alternative energy input may be preferred in various applications and enables additional control over molecular switching states and properties. While symmetric bistricyclic overcrowded enes (BAEs) containing two identical halves based on either thioxanthene (TX) or acridine (Acr) motifs are known to be reversible conformational redox switches, their redox potentials are generally too high or low, respectively, thereby preventing wider applications. Herein, we demonstrate that the "mixed" TX-Acr switch possesses redox properties that lie between those of its parent symmetric analogs, enabling interconversion between three stable redox and conformational states at mild potentials. This includes the neutral anti-folded, the dicationic orthogonal, and a unique twisted monoradical cation state, the latter of which is only accessible in the case of the mixed TX-Acr switch and in a pathway-dependent manner. Consequently, with this multistate redox switch, a myriad of molecular properties, including geometry, polarity, absorbance, and fluorescence, can be modulated with high fidelity and reversibility between three distinct stable states. More generally, this study highlights the versatility of the "mix and match" approach in rationally designing redox switches with specific (redox) properties, which in turn is expected to enable a myriad of applications ranging from molecular logic and memory to actuators and energy storage systems.

Synthesis, Photophysical and Electronic Properties of Mono-, Di-, and Tri-Amino-Substituted Ortho-Perylenes, and Comparison to the Tetra-Substituted Derivative.

Project description:We synthesized a series of new mono-, di-, tri- and tetra-substituted perylene derivatives with strong bis(para-methoxyphenyl)amine (DPA) donors at the uncommon 2,5,8,11-positions. The properties of our new donor-substituted perylenes were studied in detail to establish a structure-property relationship. Interesting trends and unusual properties are observed for this series of new perylene derivatives, such as a decreasing charge transfer (CT) character with increasing number of DPA moieties and individual reversible oxidations for each DPA moiety. Thus, (DPA)-Per possesses one reversible oxidation while (DPA)4 -Per has four. The mono- and di-substituted derivatives display unusually large Stokes shifts not previously reported for perylenes. Furthermore, transient absorption measurements of the new derivatives reveal an excited state with lifetimes of several hundred microseconds, which sensitizes singlet oxygen with quantum yields of up to 0.83.

Catalytic stereoselective synthesis of all-carbon tetra-substituted alkenes <i>via Z</i>-selective alkyne difunctionalization.

Project description:We report a Ni-catalyzed cascade reaction leading to the arylation of an alkyne-induced acyl migration and the formation of all-carbon tetra-substituted alkenes in good yields with exclusive Z-selectivity. This transformation involves the generation of a nucleophilic vinyl-Ni species through regioselective syn-aryl nickelation of the alkynes, followed by an intramolecular acyl migration. The steric and electronic properties of the phosphine ligands are crucial for achieving high regio- and stereocontrol in this migratory carbo-acylation process. The synthetic utility of the resulting Z-tetra-substituted alkenes is also demonstrated.

A chiral self-sorting photoresponsive coordination cage based on overcrowded alkenes.

Project description:In recent years, increasing efforts have been devoted to designing new functional stimuli-responsive supramolecular assemblies. Here, we present three isomeric supramolecular coordination complexes consisting of a Pd2L4 stoichiometry. As shown by NMR, CD and X-ray studies, as well as DFT calculations, these complexes form cage-like structures by chiral self-sorting. Photochromic ligands derived from first generation molecular motors enable light-driven interconversion between the three isomers. Two of the isomers were able to form host-guest complexes opening up new prospects toward stimuli-controlled substrate binding and release.

Shape-Adaptability and Redox-Switching Properties of a Di-Gold Metallotweezer.

Project description:The use of a carbazolyl-connected di-gold(I) metallotweezer for the encapsulation of several electron-poor organic substrates, and a planar Au(III) complex containing a CNC pincer ligand, is described. The binding affinity of the receptor depends on the electron-deficient character of the planar guest, with larger association constants found for the more electron-poor guests. The X-ray diffraction molecular structures of two host:guest adducts show that the host approaches its arms in order to facilitate the optimum interaction with the surface of the planar guests, in a clear example of an guest-induced fit conformational arrangement. The electrochemical studies of the encapsulation of N,N'-dimethyl-naphthalenetetracarboxy diimide (NTCDI) show that the redox active guest is released from the receptor upon one electron reduction, thus constituting an example of redox-switchable binding.

Synthesis of highly substituted alkenes by sulfur-mediated olefination of N-tosylhydrazones.

Project description:Tetraphenylethylenes (TPEs) are well-known for their aggregation-induced emission properties. The synthesis of TPE derivatives, as well as other highly substituted olefins, generally requires the use of hazardous reagents, such as metalorganic compounds, to overcome the high activation energies caused by the sterically congested double bond. Herein, we present an efficient and metal-free procedure for the synthesis of tetraarylethylenes via alkylidene-homocoupling of N-tosylhydrazones, derived from readily available benzophenones, in excellent yields. The method relies only on cheap and benign additives, i.e. elemental sulfur and potassium carbonate, and easily competes with other established procedures in terms of scope, yield and practicability. A mechanistic study revealed a diazo compound, a thioketone and a thiirane as key intermediates in the pathway of the reaction. Based on this, a modified method, which allows for selective alkylidene-cross-coupling, generating a broader scope of tri- and tetrasubstituted olefins in good yields, is showcased as well.

Photocatalytic synthesis of tetra-substituted furans promoted by carbon dioxide.

Project description:We report a simple protocol for the transition metal-free, visible-light-driven conversion of 1,3-diketones to tetra-substituted furan skeleton compounds in carbon dioxide (CO2) atmosphere under mild conditions. It was found that CO2 could be incorporated at the diketone enolic OH position, which was key to enabling the cleavage of a C-O bond during the rearrangement of a cyclopropane intermediate. This method allows for the same-pot construction of two isomers of the high-value tetra-substituted furan scaffold. The synthetic scope and preliminary mechanistic investigations are presented.

A redox-neutral synthesis of ketones by coupling of alkenes and amides.

Project description:The direct synthesis of ketones via carbon-carbon bond formation represents one of the most important challenges in organic synthesis. Hydroacylation of alkenes offers perhaps the most efficient and atom-economical approach for the preparation of ketones employing carbonyl compounds and alkenes as feedstocks. State-of-the-art hydroacylation is typically achieved by a transition metal-catalysed coupling of an aldehyde and an alkene but is plagued by competing decarbonylation, requiring the installation of directing groups in the aldehyde reactant. Herein, we present a method for the hydroacylation of alkenes employing amides in a metal-free regime, proceeding by a new mechanism and offering orthogonal reactivity to the conventional, metal-catalysed alternatives.

Asymmetric [2+1] cycloaddition of difluoroalkyl-substituted carbenes with alkenes under rhodium catalysis: Synthesis of chiral difluoroalkyl-substituted cyclopropanes.

Project description:Herein, we report a novel strategy for the synthesis of chiral difluoroalkyl-substituted cyclopropanes through enantioselective [2 + 1] cyclopropanation of alkenes and difluoroalkyl-substituted carbenes under rhodium catalysis, wherein the newly designed α, α-difluoro-β-carbonyl ketone N-triftosylhydrazones are used as the difluoroalkyl-substituted carbenes precursors. This approach represents the first asymmetric cyclopropanation of alkenes with difluoroalkyl carbenes, featuring high yield, high enantioselectivity, and broad substrate scope. Gram-scale synthesis and further interconversion of diverse functional groups demonstrate the usefulness of this protocol in the preparation of diverse functionalized chiral difluoroalkyl-substituted cyclopropanes.

Fluorescence and FTIR Spectra Analysis of Trans-A₂B₂-Substituted Di- and Tetra-Phenyl Porphyrins.

Project description:A series of asymmetrically substituted free-base di- and tetra-phenylporphyrins and the associated Zn-phenylporphyrins were synthesized and studied by X-ray diffraction, NMR, infrared, electronic absorption spectra, as well as fluorescence emission spectroscopy, along with theoretical simulations of the electronic and vibration structures. The synthesis selectively afforded trans-A₂B₂ porphyrins, without scrambling observed, where the AA and BB were taken as donor- and acceptor-substituted phenyl groups. The combined results point to similar properties to symmetrically substituted porphyrins reported in the literature. The differences in FTIR and fluorescence were analyzed by means of detailed density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The X-ray diffraction analysis for single crystals of zinc-containing porphyrins revealed small deviations from planarity for the porphyrin core in perfect agreement with the DFT optimized structures. All calculated vibrational modes (2162 modes for all six compounds studied) were found and fully characterized and assigned to the observed FTIR spectra. The most intense IR bands are discussed in connection with the generic similarity and differences of calculated normal modes. Absorption spectra of all compounds in the UV and visible regions show the typical ethio type feature of meso-tetraarylporphyrins with a very intense Soret band and weak Q bands of decreasing intensity. In diphenyl derivatives, the presence of only two phenyl rings causes a pronounced hypsochromic shift of all bands in the absorption spectra. Time-dependent DFT calculations revealed some peculiarities in the electronic excited states structure and connected them with vibronic bands in the absorption and fluorescence spectra from associated vibrational sublevels.
