Aqueous dispersion and tuning surface charges of polytetrafluoroethylene particles by bioinspired polydopamine-polyethyleneimine coating via one-step method.

ABSTRACT: We propose a surface modification of poorly dispersive polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) particles via bioinspired polydopamine-polyethyleneimine (PDA-PEI) which conferred PTFE particles a uniform dispersion in aqueous medium. With increasing dopamine concentration in the reaction solution, dispersity of PTFE particles improved and the surface charges of particles changed from negative to positive due to an increase of surface coverage of PDA-PEI layers. Simplicity of the method here outlines an attractive route for surface modification of inert surfaces useful for large-scale applications.

Polyethyleneimine-assisted co-deposition of polydopamine coating with enhanced stability and efficient secondary modification.

Project description:The stability and grafting efficiency are important for polydopamine (pDA) coatings used as platforms for secondary grafting. In this work, polyethyleneimine (PEI) was co-deposited with dopamine on various materials (PP, PTFE and PVC), then immersed in a 1.0 M HCl solution or 1.0 M NaOH solution to investigate the detachment of the coatings using UV-vis spectroscopy, SEM, FTIR spectroscopy and XPS, and the effect of PEI molecular weight on the secondary grafting of heparin on the pDA/PEI coating was investigated through clotting time tests. The results showed that the detachment rates of the pDA/PEI coating (14.6%, 23.7%) co-deposited on PTFE in 1.0 M HCl or 1.0 M NaOH solutions were both lower than that of the pDA coating (35.0%, 74.6%), indicating that pDA/PEI coatings could better remain on substrates in a 1.0 M NaOH solution. Besides, pDA/PEI coatings on a PP membrane with both a higher deposition density and stability could be obtained when the mass ratio of DA/PEI was 2 : 1-1 : 1 and PEI molecular weight was 600 Da. After grafting heparin, it was found that the pDA/PEI coating with lower molecular weight (600 Da and 1800 Da) PEI could achieve a higher grafting density of heparin with a longer clotting time. Thus, the results provided better understanding about the stability of pDA/PEI coatings and efficiency of heparin grafting.

Biomimetic catechol-based adhesive polymers for dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) nanoparticles in an aqueous medium.

Project description:Biomimetic synthetic functional materials are valuable for a large number of practical applications with improved or tunable performance. In this paper, we present a series of mussel-inspired biomimetic catechol-containing copolymers synthesized from dopamine methacrylamide (DMA) and 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethyl acrylate (EEA) and abbreviated as poly(PDMA-PEEA). The successfully synthesized adhesive polymers allow adhering polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and were used for coating PTFE particles in organic solvent and re-dispersion in an aqueous medium. Adhesive polymer coated PTFE particles were efficiently used as a nanoreactor for generating silver (Ag) metal nanoparticles (NPs).

Colloidal dispersion of poly(ionic liquid)/Cu composite particles for protective surface coating against SAR-CoV-2.

Project description:Herein, we report a waterproof anti-SARS-CoV-2 protective film prepared by spray-coating of an aqueous colloidal dispersion of poly(ionic liquid)/copper (PIL/Cu) composite nanoparticles onto a substrate. The PIL dispersion was prepared by suspension polymerization of 3-dodecyl-1-vinylimdiazolium bromide in water at 70°C. The copper acetate salt was added into the PIL nanoparticle dispersion and in situ reduced into copper nanoparticles anchoring onto the PIL nanoparticles. Despite being waterborne, the PIL in bulk is intrinsically insoluble in water and the formed coating is stable in water. The formed surface coating by PIL/copper composite nanoparticles was able to deactivate SARS-CoV-2 virions by 90.0% in 30 minutes and thus may effectively prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 through surface contact. This method may provide waterborne dispersions for a broad range of antivirus protective surface coatings for both outdoor and indoor applications.

Tailoring van der Waals dispersion interactions with external electric charges.

Project description:van der Waals (vdW) dispersion interactions strongly impact the properties of molecules and materials. Often, the description of vdW interactions should account for the coupling with pervasive electric fields, stemming from membranes, ionic channels, liquids, or nearby charged functional groups. However, this quantum-mechanical effect has been omitted in atomistic simulations, even in widely employed electronic-structure methods. Here, we develop a model and study the effects of an external charge on long-range vdW correlations. We show that a positive external charge stabilizes dispersion interactions, whereas a negative charge has an opposite effect. Our analytical results are benchmarked on a series of (bio)molecular dimers and supported by calculations with high-level correlated quantum-chemical methods, which estimate the induced dispersion to reach up to 35% of intermolecular binding energy (4 kT for amino-acid dimers at room temperature). Our analysis bridges electrostatic and electrodynamic descriptions of intermolecular interactions and may have implications for non-covalent reactions, exfoliation, dissolution, and permeation through biological membranes.

Robust vaccine formulation produced by assembling a hybrid coating of polyethyleneimine-silica.

Project description:Exploring formulations that can improve the thermostability and immunogenicity of vaccines holds great promise in advancing the efficacy of vaccination to combat infectious diseases. Inspired by biomineralized core-shell structures in nature, we suggest a polyethyleneimine (PEI)-silica-PEI hybrid coated vaccine formulation to improve both thermostability and immunogenicity. Through electrostatic adsorption, in situ silicification and capping treatment, a hybrid coating of silica and PEI was assembled around a vaccine to produce vaccine@PEI-silica structures. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that the thermostability and immunogenicity of the modified vaccine were significantly improved. The modified vaccine could be used efficiently after long-term exposure at room temperature, which would facilitate vaccine transport and storage without a cold chain. Furthermore, mechanistic studies revealed that the PEI-silica-PEI coating acted as a physiochemical anchor as well as a mobility-restricting hydration layer to stabilize the enclosed vaccine. This achievement demonstrates a biomimetic surface-modification-based strategy to confer desired properties on biological products.

Bioinspired Super-Strong Aqueous Synthetic Tissue Adhesives.

Project description:Existing tissue adhesives and sealants are far from satisfactory when applied on wet and dynamic tissues. Herein, we report a strategy for designing biodegradable super-strong aqueous glue (B-Seal) for surgical uses inspired by an English ivy adhesion strategy and a cement particle packing theory. B-Seal is a fast-gelling, super-strong, and elastic adhesive sealant composed of injectable water-borne biodegradable polyurethane (WPU) nanodispersions with mismatched particle sizes and counterions in its A-B formulation. B-Seal showed 24-fold greater burst pressure than DuraSeal®, 138-fold greater T-pull adhesive strength than fibrin glue, and 16-fold greater lap shear strength than fibrin glue. In vivo evaluation on a rat cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea model and a porcine craniotomy model validated the safety and efficacy of B-Seal for effective CSF leak prevention and dura repair. The plant-inspired adhesion strategy combined with particle packing theory represents a new direction of designing the next-generation wet tissue adhesives for surgeries.

Rapid preparation of polydopamine coating as a multifunctional hair dye.

Project description:Dyeing of hair is an interesting research field within the cosmetics industry due to the increasingly aging population worldwide. In order to reduce the toxicity of hair dye materials and improve the speed of hair dyeing, we developed an in situ polymerization of dopamine catalyzed by copper sulfate and hydrogen peroxide on the hair surface to form a polydopamine (PDA) coating for hair dyeing. The morphology and elements of polydopamine on hair were characterized. The durability, thermal insulation, and bacteriostasis performance of PDA hair dye were discussed. The results showed that human hair can be dyed by PDA in as little as 5 min with comparable dyeing results to those of commercial products. PDA-based hair dye displayed significant durability, and barely faded after continuous washing with shampoo (30 times). After PDA dyeing, the thermal insulation performance was enhanced, which could prevent external heat invasion in summer and local heat dissipation in winter, increasing the level of comfort. In addition, remarkable antibacterial properties were demonstrated, which could effectively prevent the occurrence of bacterial inflammation on the scalp. These results might push forward the evolution of nanomaterial-based hair dyes with promising green, healthy, and user-friendly advantages.

Fluorinated Polydopamine Shell Decorated Fillers in Polytetrafluoroethylene Composite for Achieving Highly Reduced Coefficient of Thermal Expansion.

Project description:The noticeable difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coatings and copper substrates is a major challenge for thermal debonding of the copper-clad laminate (CCL) in high-frequency communications. Theoretically, ceramic fillers with low CTEs in the coating can effectively reduce the gap, and there remains a trade-off between the dispersibility of fillers and the interfacial interactions with the polymeric matrix. Here, we propose a novel approach to prepare a pentafluorobenzoyl chloride (PFBC)-modified polydopamine (PDA) shell on silica particles by using amidation. Such modified particles perform excellent dispersion and exhibit diminished interfacial gaps in the PTFE matrix, which highly reduces CTE to 77 ppm/°C, accounting for only 48.1% of the neat coating. Moreover, the composite exhibits enhanced mechanical strength and toughness, and consequently suppresses thermal debonding in CCL under high-temperature conditions. Therefore, results present a promising potential for its use in the next-generation CCL of high-frequency communication devices.

Co-Dispersion Behavior of ZrB₂-SiC-B₄C-C Powders with Polyethyleneimine.

Project description:The aqueous dispersion behavior of ZrB₂, SiC powders with B₄C and C as sintering aids was investigated. Well co-dispersed suspension can be obtained in acidic solutions in presence of polyethyleneimine (PEI). The adsorption of PEI on the powder surface was measured by thermal gravimetric (TG) analysis. Rheological measurements displayed the effect of dispersant on the flow behavior of as-prepared slurries. An optimum condition was obtained with 1 wt % PEI. The viscosity of 40 vol % ZrB₂-SiC-B₄C-C (ZSBC) suspension at 100 s-1 was as low as 0.74 Pa·s, which was suitable for aqueous processing.

Tuning disorder in structurally colored bioinspired photonic glasses.

Project description:Colloidal crystals, such as opals, display bright and iridescent colors when assembled from submicron particles. While the brightness and purity of iridescent colors are well suited for ornaments, signaling, and anticounterfeiting, their angle dependence limits the range of their applications. In contrast, colloidal glasses display angle-independent structural color that is tunable by the size and local arrangement of particles. However, the angle-independent color of colloidal photonic glasses usually yields pastel colors that are not vivid due to the disorder in the particle assembly. Here, we report an electrophoretic assembly platform for tuning the level of disorder in the particle system from a colloidal crystal to a colloidal glass. Altering the electric field in our electrophoretic platform allows for deliberate control of the assembly kinetics and thus the level of order in the particle assembly. With the help of microscopy, X-ray scattering, and optical characterization, we show that the photonic properties of the assembled films can be tuned with the applied electric field. Our analyses reveal that angle-independent color with optimum color brightness can be achieved in typical colloidal suspensions when the range of order is at ∼3.2 particle diameters, which is expected at a moderate electric field of ∼15 V mm-1.
