A large dataset of detection and submeter-accurate 3-D trajectories of juvenile Chinook salmon.

ABSTRACT: Acoustic telemetry has been used extensively to study the behavior of aquatic animals. The Juvenile Salmon Acoustic Telemetry System (JSATS) is one such system; it was developed for studying juvenile salmonids but has been used to study numerous species. A recent innovation of the JSATS system is an acoustic transmitter that is small enough to be implanted through injection or small incision that doesn't require sutures. Use of the JSATS system involves deploying cabled acoustic receivers at hydroelectric dams, or other structures, and autonomous acoustic receivers in free-flowing sections of a river. The raw detections from acoustic-tagged fish are processed to remove potential false positives. The clean detections (5,147,996 total) are used to generate detection events and to compute 3-D trajectories (403,900 total), which are used to assign fish to a passage route through a dam. Controlled field testing involving a high-accuracy Global Positioning System receiver is done to validate the submeter accuracy of the trajectories. The JSATS dataset could be reused for expanding the understanding of near-dam fish behavior.

Project description:While numerous studies have shown that floodplain habitat complexity can be important to fish ecology, few quantify how watershed-scale complexity influences productivity. This scale mismatch complicates population conservation and recovery strategies that evaluate recovery at regional or multi-basin scales. We used outputs from a habitat status and trends monitoring program for ten of Puget Sound's large river systems to examine whether juvenile Chinook salmon productivity relates to watershed-scale habitat complexity. We derived habitat complexity metrics that quantified wood jam densities, side and braid to main channel ratios, and node densities from a remote sensing census of Puget Sound's large river systems. Principal component analysis revealed that 91% of variance in these metrics could be explained by two principal components. These metrics revealed gradients in habitat complexity across Puget Sound which were sensitive to changes in complexity as a result of restoration actions in one watershed. Mixed effects models revealed that the second principle component term (PC2) describing habitat complexity was positively related to log transformed subyearling Chinook per spawner productivity rates from 6-18 cohorts per watershed. Total subyearling productivity (subyearlings per spawner) and fry productivity (subyearling fry per spawner) rates were best described by models that included a positive effect of habitat complexity (PC2) and negative relationships with log transformed peak flow recurrence interval, suggestive of reduced survival due to egg destruction during floods. Total subyearling productivity (subyearlings per spawner) and parr productivity (subyearling parr per spawner) rates were best described by models that included a positive effect of habitat complexity (PC2) and negative relationships with log transformed spawner density, suggestive of density dependent limits on juvenile rearing habitat. We also found that coefficient of variation for log transformed subyearling productivity and subyearling fry productivity rates declined with increasing habitat complexity, supporting the idea that habitat complexity buffers populations from annual variation in environmental conditions. Therefore, we conclude that our watershed-scale census-based approach provided habitat complexity metrics that explained some of the variability in productivity of subyearling juveniles among Chinook salmon populations. Furthermore, this approach may provide a useful means to track and evaluate aggregate effects of habitat changes on the productivity of Endangered Species Act (ESA) listed Chinook salmon populations over time.

Project description:BackgroundFor many aquatic taxa, juvenile dispersal from spawning locations to rearing habitats is a critical process influencing individual fitness and population dynamics. However, our understanding of dispersal patterns in naturally spawning fish populations remains largely unknown due to the logistical challenges of tagging and tracking movement at early life stages.MethodsWe quantified dispersal patterns of a spring-run Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) population in NE Oregon, USA using genetic parentage-based tagging to trace juveniles captured from summer rearing habitats back to their maternal parent and associated spawning location (i.e., juvenile origin). We evaluated overall dispersal patterns, longitudinal trends across the watershed, and relationships between dispersal and biophysical factors, including thermal conditions, network-scale abundance estimates, and juvenile size-at-capture.ResultsOverall dispersal of the 1326 juveniles (n sampled = 3388) assigned to a maternal parent (n = 64) was downstream-biased, but we estimated that 32% dispersed upstream and 29% moved into adjacent tributaries after initial mainstem dispersal. Dispersal distances were high relative to those found in other studies, with 25% of parr dispersing more than 0.9 km upstream (max = 10.6 km) and 25% dispersing more than 3.7 km downstream (max = 28.6 km). Analysis of dispersal patterns and potential drivers indicated that (1) dispersal distances, directional bias, and variability showed clear longitudinal trends from downstream to upstream origin locations, (2) temperature was a dominant driver of dispersal, with individuals originating from warmer sections of the mainstem typically moving to cooler mainstem sections or tributaries, and (3) dispersal distance was associated with larger size-at-capture for individuals that dispersed downstream, but not upstream.ConclusionsThe widespread dispersal patterns exhibited in this population, including moving considerable distances upstream, downstream, and into tributaries, suggests that dispersal in naturally spawning fish populations may be more extensive and variable than currently recognized. We found that heterogeneity in biophysical conditions shaped within-population variability and riverscape dispersal patterns with important implications for subsequent fish habitat use, distribution, and size. This study provides an approach to evaluate patterns and drivers of dispersal in naturally spawning populations and inform conservation and restoration planning through better alignment with juvenile fish ecology.

Project description:Prey evaluate risk and make decisions based on the balance between the costs of predation and those of engaging in antipredator behaviour. Economic escape theory has been valuable in understanding the responses of stationary prey under predation risk; however, current models are not applicable for directionally moving prey. Here we present an extension of existing escape theory that predicts how much predation risk is perceived by directionally moving prey. Perceived risk is measured by the extent antipredator behaviour causes a change in travel speed (the distance to a destination divided by the total time to reach that destination). Cryptic or cautious antipredator behaviour slows travel speed, while prey may also speed up to reduce predator-prey overlap. Next, we applied the sensitization hypothesis to our model, which predicts that prey with more predator experience should engage in more antipredator behaviour, which leads to a larger change in travel speed under predation risk. We then compared the qualitative predictions of our model to the results of a behavioural assay with juvenile Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha that varied in their past predator experience. We timed salmon swimming downstream through a mesh enclosure in the river with and without predator cues present to measure their reaction to a predator. Hatchery salmon had the least predator experience, followed by wild salmon captured upstream (wild-upstream) and wild-salmon captured downstream (wild-downstream). Both wild salmon groups slowed down in response to predator cues, whereas hatchery salmon did not change travel speed. The magnitude of reaction to predator cues by salmon group followed the gradient of previous predator experience, supporting the sensitization hypothesis. Moving animals are conspicuous and vulnerable to predators. Here we provide a novel conceptual framework for understanding how directionally moving prey perceive risk and make antipredator decisions. Our study extends the scope of economic escape theory and improves general understanding of non-lethal effects of predators on moving prey.
