A Successful Kindergarten Transition for Children with Disabilities: Collaboration Throughout the Process.

ABSTRACT: The transition to kindergarten can be a memorable, yet stressful time for children and families. For children with disabilities and their caregivers, the transition to kindergarten can be especially difficult due to changes in environment, supports, and services that occur as part of the transition. The purpose of this article is to highlight specific practices and strategies that can enhance collaboration throughout the transition to kindergarten. Fictional vignettes are used to describe the perspectives of, and also the practices and strategies used by, members of an education team as they support a child with a disability and her caregiver. Readers are provided with examples of practices and planning tools that can be used to support children with disabilities throughout the transition to kindergarten process. High-intensity transition practices and strategies that can be used before, during, and after kindergarten transition are specifically highlighted. Additionally, the need for both preschool and kindergarten collaboration and support is emphasized.

Project description:IntroductionThis research paper aims to assess factors reported by parents associated with the successful transition of children with complex additional support requirements that have undergone a transition between school environments from 8 European Union member states.MethodsQuantitative data were collected from 306 parents within education systems from 8 EU member states (Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain and the UK). The data were derived from an online questionnaire and consisted of 41 questions. Information was collected on: parental involvement in their child's transition, child involvement in transition, child autonomy, school ethos, professionals' involvement in transition and integrated working, such as, joint assessment, cooperation and coordination between agencies. Survey questions that were designed on a Likert-scale were included in the Principal Components Analysis (PCA), additional survey questions, along with the results from the PCA, were used to build a logistic regression model.ResultsFour principal components were identified accounting for 48.86% of the variability in the data. Principal component 1 (PC1), 'child inclusive ethos,' contains 16.17% of the variation. Principal component 2 (PC2), which represents child autonomy and involvement, is responsible for 8.52% of the total variation. Principal component 3 (PC3) contains questions relating to parental involvement and contributed to 12.26% of the overall variation. Principal component 4 (PC4), which involves transition planning and coordination, contributed to 11.91% of the overall variation. Finally, the principal components were included in a logistic regression to evaluate the relationship between inclusion and a successful transition, as well as whether other factors that may have influenced transition. All four principal components were significantly associated with a successful transition, with PC1 being having the most effect (OR: 4.04, CI: 2.43-7.18, p<0.0001).DiscussionTo support a child with complex additional support requirements through transition from special school to mainstream, governments and professionals need to ensure children with additional support requirements and their parents are at the centre of all decisions that affect them. It is important that professionals recognise the educational, psychological, social and cultural contexts of a child with additional support requirements and their families which will provide a holistic approach and remove barriers for learning.

Project description:Obesity is prevalent among women of reproductive age, and developmental disabilities in children continue to increase. We examined associations between mother's prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) and physical and developmental disabilities, and objective measures of reading and math skills and fine and gross motor function in children.We used the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort (ECLS-B; n=5200), a cohort of children born in 2001 and followed until kindergarten. Children were classified according to maternal prepregnancy BMI (in kg per?m(2)): underweight (BMI <18.5), normal weight (BMI 18.5-24.9), overweight (BMI 25.0-29.9), obese class I (BMI 30.0-34.9) and obese class II/III (BMI ? 35.0). Parent reports of doctor-diagnosed disabilities were collected up to kindergarten and classified as learning and behavioral or physical. Children's reading and math and fine and gross motor function were assessed at kindergarten according to standardized tests. Linear and modified logistic regression models were adjusted for maternal sociodemographic variables, family enrichment variables, and children's sex, age and year of kindergarten entry. Additional adjustment for current child BMI was performed in separate models. All data are weighted to be nationally representative of the children born in 2001.Compared with children of normal-weight mothers, children born to obese class II/III mothers had an increased risk of learning or behavioral (risk ratio 1.67; 95% confidence interval 1.27, 2.21)), but not physical disabilities (risk ratio 0.57; 95% confidence interval 0.27, 1.22). Gross (P<0.001), but not fine (P=0.06) motor function was significantly associated with maternal BMI, but gross motor function was attenuated after adjustment for current child BMI (P=0.05). Children's reading scores (P=0.01) but not math scores (P=0.11) were significantly associated with maternal BMI.In this nationally representative US cohort, children born to severely obese mothers had an increased risk for diagnosed learning and behavioral but not physical disabilities by kindergarten.

Project description:BackgroundThe transition process from the family home to independent living for young adults with profound intellectual disability (PID) becomes delayed. Those families face challenges that exceed those of typical families such as higher objective and subjective burden, more frequent psychological distress and lower social support. The aim of this study was to explore the collaboration process between parents and employees and identify factors that improve the transition with less burden.MethodsA descriptive qualitative study was undertaken with 18 persons (9 parents and 9 employees) interviewed individually and in groups. In accordance with the municipality's guidelines, families with a child with PID should apply for housing, when the child turns 16. The purpose is to ensure interdisciplinary collaboration, information flow and coordinated services according to family's needs. The main question in the interviews was 'What was your experience with cooperation in the transition process, and what would you do to improve this process?' The interviews were analysed with a thematic approach using systematic text condensation.ResultsThe parents experienced a lack of general information about the 'housing waiting list', level of services, and the plan for time of moving from the family home, and how to choose where and whom to live with. Parents described an unsustainable burden of care during the waiting period, and a family crisis caused the allocation of an apartment in a group house. Employees shared challenges to meet families' wishes, as there were too few group homes. They experienced good collaboration with families and said they offered respite care, due to reduce parents' burden of care. Employees experienced that PID adolescents developed skills, mastery and degrees of independence after completing a residency at the Folk High School.ConclusionsTo improve the transition process from family home to independent living for young adults with PID, the informants highlighted some factors to reduce the burden of care on families: 1) Systematic follow-up program for families to observe their needs at an early stage; 2) More available group houses; 3) Information about the housing priorities of the services and; 4) Educational preparation programs for families.
