Quality of life, health, and government perception during COVID-19 times: Data from Colombia.

ABSTRACT: This analysis presents data collected through an online survey about the quality of life, health, subjective wellbeing, and government perception in four cities in Colombia during the COVID-19 crisis. Four universities and a local newspaper promoted the survey to assess how the pandemic affected the population's quality of life in a broad range of social and economic aspects. Respondents were adults (+18 years old) living in the largest Colombia cities: Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, and Barranquilla, totaling 1637 complete observations. Researchers used snowballing sampling strategy, social networks, a web page, and an advertisement in the partner newspaper for data collection. This data set helps to conduct social research and policy reports about the consequences of the pandemic. The data enclosed in this paper includes socioeconomic variables, income reduction, employment, household composition, teleworking, indebtedness, physical and mental health, physical activity behavior, subjective wellbeing, affective and communal relationships, institutional trust, and perception of government performance during COVID-19. We aim at contributing to a better understating of the consequences of the pandemic in Colombia and general in the Global South through the collection and dissemination of data for academic and policy purposes.

Project description:BackgroundSurvey data were needed to assess the mental and social health, health related behaviors and compliance with preventive measures of the population during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, the pandemic challenged classical survey methods. Time and budgetary constraints at the beginning of the pandemic led to ad hoc recruitment of participants and easily manageable data collection modes. This paper describes the methodological choices and results in terms of participation for the COVID-19 health surveys conducted in Belgium.MethodsThe COVID-19 health surveys refer to a series of ten non-probability web surveys organized between April 2020 and March 2022. The applied recruitment strategies were diverse including, amongst others, a launch through the website and the social media of the organizing research institute. In addition, the survey links were shared in articles published in the national press and participants were requested to share the surveys in their network. Furthermore, participants were asked consent to be re-contacted for next survey editions using e-mail invitations.ResultsThese mixed approaches allowed to reach a substantial number of participants per edition ranging from 49339 in survey 1 to 13882 in survey 10. In addition, a longitudinal component was created; a large share of the same individuals were followed up over time; 12599 participants completed at least 5 surveys. There were, however, sex, age, educational level and regional differences in participation. Post-stratification weighting on socio-demographic factors was applied to at least partly take this into account.ConclusionThe COVID-19 health surveys allowed rapid data collection after the onset of the pandemic. Data from these non-probability web surveys had their limitations in terms of representativeness due to self-selection but were an important information source as there were few alternatives. Moreover, by following-up the same individuals over time it was possible to study the effect of the different crisis phases on, amongst others, the mental health. It is important to draw lessons from these experiences: initiatives in order to create a survey infrastructure better equipped for future crises are needed.

Project description:IntroductionOne of COVID-19’s limitations is the reduced quality of life (QoL) caused by variety of underlying reasons. Even though multiple papers in the literature reveal a worsening of QoL after COVID-19, there is currently inadequate evidence on which patients’ QoL is impacted the most. Our study’s aim was to determine which patients’ quality of life was most compromised so that interventions for poor QoL should not be overlooked in the post-disease assessments of those in the risk group.Materials and methodsPatients referred to our pulmonary rehabilitation center for Long COVID symptoms had their dyspnea perception, body composition, exercise capacity, muscle strengths, and psychological state evaluated. In addition, SF-36 was used to assess their QoL. After obtaining all medical data, the patients were separated into three groups based on whether they had the disease as an outpatient, inpatient in the hospital, or in the intensive care unit. The Anova and Kruskal Wallis tests were utilized in the statistical analysis of demographic data among patient groups. Pearson’s test was used for normal distributions, whereas Spearman’s test was used for non-normal distribution analyses. The factors affecting QoL were investigated using multivariate linear regression analysis.ResultsThe majority of 173 study participants had poor QoL. Low exercise capacity (p= 0.026), impaired psychosocial status (p= 0.034 for anxiety, p= 0.022 for depression), and increased fatigue (p= 0.001) were the factors affecting SF-36’s physical component summary (PCS), whereas young age (p= 0.026), male sex (p= 0.037), impaired psychosocial status (p< 0.001 for anxiety, p= 0.002 for depression), and increased fatigue (p= 0.005) were the factors affecting the SF-36’s mental component summary (MCS).ConclusionYoung age, male sex, reduced exercise capacity, poor psychosocial status, and increased fatigue are predictors for impaired QoL after COVID19. Therefore, non-medical treatment options that improve QoL should be considered in the follow-up of these patients.
