Reversible redox controlled acids for cationic ring-opening polymerization.

ABSTRACT: Advancements in externally controlled polymerization methodologies have enabled the synthesis of novel polymeric structures and architectures, and they have been pivotal to the development of new photocontrolled lithographic and 3D printing technologies. In particular, the development of externally controlled ring-opening polymerization (ROP) methodologies is of great interest, as these methods provide access to novel biocompatible and biodegradable block polymer structures. Although ROPs mediated by photoacid generators have made significant contributions to the fields of lithography and microelectronics development, these methodologies rely upon catalysts with poor stability and thus poor temporal control. Herein, we report a class of ferrocene-derived acid catalysts whose acidity can be altered through reversible oxidation and reduction of the ferrocenyl moiety to chemically and electrochemically control the ROP of cyclic esters.

Cationic-anionic synchronous ring-opening polymerization.

Project description:Chemical reactions with incompatible mechanisms (such as nucleophilic reactions and electrophilic reactions, cationic polymerization and anionic polymerization) are usually difficult to perform simultaneously in one-pot. In particular, synchronous cationic-anionic polymerization has been an important challenge in the field of polymer synthesis due to possible coupling termination of both chain ends. We recently found that such terminal couplings can be significantly inhibited by a bismuth salt with a strong nucleophilic anion (e.g., BiCl3) and disclosed the mechanism. Accordingly, we propose a cationic-anionic polymerization (CAP) method where cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) of 2-oxazolines (Ox) and anionic ring-opening polymerization (AROP) of cyclic esters (CE) can be initiated sequentially and propagated simultaneously in one-pot, using bismuth salts as the initial initiators, to afford a multifunctional copolymer polyoxazoline-block-polyester (POx-b-PCE). Furthermore, a block copolymer PAPOZ20-b-PCL5 synthesized by CAP can self-assemble into micellar aggregates, which exhibit excellent intrinsic antibacterial activities without loading any extra antibiotic components. Overall, such a CAP method opens new avenues for synthesizing multi-component copolymers and biomaterials.

Lignin-Based Polyols with Controlled Microstructure by Cationic Ring Opening Polymerization.

Project description:Lignin-based polyols (LBPs) with controlled microstructure were obtained by cationic ring opening polymerization (CROP) of oxiranes in an organosolv lignin (OL) tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution. The control on the microstructure and consequently on the properties of the LBPs such as hydroxyl number, average molecular weight, melting, crystallization and decomposition temperatures, are crucial to determine the performance and application of the derived-products. The influence of key parameters, for example, molar ratio between the oxirane and the hydroxyl groups content in OLO, initial OL concentration in THF, temperature, specific flow rate and oxirane nature has been investigated. LBPs with hydroxyl numbers from 35 to 217 mg KOH/g, apparent average Mw between 5517 and 52,900 g/mol and melting temperatures from -8.4 to 18.4 °C were obtained. The CROP procedure allows obtaining of tailor-made LBPs for specific applications in a very simple way, opening the way to introduce LBPs as a solid alternative to substitute currently used fossil-based polyols.

Photoinitiated Cationic Ring-Opening Polymerization of Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane.

Project description:Photochemical techniques have recently been revitalized as they can readily be adapted to different polymerization modes to yield a wide range of complex macromolecular structures. However, the implementation of the photoinduced cationic methods in the polymerization of cyclic siloxane monomers has scarcely been investigated. Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) is an important monomer for the synthesis of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and its copolymers. In this study, the cationic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of D4, initiated by diphenyl iodonium hexafluorophosphate (DPI), has been studied. Both direct and indirect initiating systems acting at broad wavelength using benzophenone and pyrene were investigated. In both systems, photochemically generated protonic acids and silylium cations are responsible for the polymerization. The kinetics of the polymerization are followed by viscosimetry and GPC analyses. The reported approach may overcome the problems associated with conventional methods and therefore represents industrial importance for the fabrication of polysiloxanes.

Photomediated Cationic Ring-Opening Polymerization of Cyclosiloxanes with Temporal Control.

Project description:Precision synthesis of polyorganosiloxanes and temporal control over the polymerization process during ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclosiloxanes remain challenging due to the occurrence of side reactions, e.g., intramolecular transfer (backbiting) and intermolecular chain transfer, and irreversible catalyst transformation. In this study, a merocyanine-based photoacid catalyst is developed for cationic ROP of different cyclosiloxanes. A series of well-defined cyclotrisiloxane polymers with predetermined molar masses and low dispersities (Đ < 1.30) are successfully synthesized under various conditions (i.e., different catalyst loadings, initiator concentrations, solvents, and monomer types). Mechanistic insights by experiments and theoretical calculations suggest that the cationic active species, siloxonium ions, are combined with the catalyst anions to form tight ion pairs, thereby attenuating the reactivity of active species and subsequently minimizing side reactions. An efficient photocatalytic cycle is established among the catalyst, monomer, and polymer chain due to the rapid and reversible isomeric phototransformation of the catalyst, which endows the polymerization process with excellent temporal control. Successful in situ chain extension further confirms the controlled characteristics of photomediated CROP. This as-developed polymerization strategy effectively addresses long-standing challenges in the field of polyorganosiloxane synthesis.

Computational evaluation of zirconocene catalysts for ε-caprolactone cationic ring-opening polymerization.

Project description:This quantum chemical study presents the ligand effect and a structure-property relationship in the cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) of ε-caprolactone using zirconocene catalysts. We first examined the effects of catalyst structure on the initiation and chain propagation steps of the CROP process. A total of 54 catalyst structures were investigated to understand the influence of the ligand structure on the stability of the catalyst-monomer complex and polymerization activity. The properties of the catalysts were analyzed in terms of ancillary ligands, ligand substituents, and bridging units. Calculations showed that the polymerization follows a proposed cationic mechanism, with ring opening occurring via alkyl-bond cleavage. A correlation between complex stability and activation energy was also observed, with ligand substituents dominating in both steps. While the ancillary ligands directly affect the HOMO energy level, the bridges are mainly responsible for the catalyst geometries, resulting in reduced complex stability and higher activation energy for the propagation step. This study contributes to a better understanding of the structural characteristics of zirconocene catalysts, which offers guidance for improving CROP activities in lactone polymerization.

Cationic indium catalysts for ring opening polymerization: tuning reactivity with hemilabile ligands.

Project description:This is a comprehensive study of the effects of rationally designed hemilabile ligands on the stability, reactivity, and change in catalytic behavior of indium complexes. We report cationic alkyl indium complexes supported by a family of hemi-salen type ligands bearing hemilabile thiophenyl (2a), furfuryl (2b) and pyridyl (2c) pendant donor arms. Shelf-life and stability of these complexes followed the trend 2a < 2b < 2c, showing direct correlation to the affinity of the pendant donor group to the indium center. Reactivity towards polymerization of epichlorohydrin and cyclohexene oxide followed the trend 2a > 2b > 2c with control of polymerization following an inverse relationship to reactivity. Surprisingly, 2c polymerized racemic lactide without an external initiator, likely through an alkyl-initiated coordination-insertion mechanism.

Controlled Organocatalytic Ring-Opening Polymerization of ε-Thionocaprolactone.

Project description:For the first time, the controlled ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-thionocaprolactone (tnCL) is conducted. The organocatalytic ROP of tnCL occurs without carbonyl scrambling, leading to homopoly(ε-thionocaprolactone) (PtnCL). The ROP by base catalysts alone is proposed to proceed via a nucleophilic mechanism, while the addition of an H-bond donating thiourea (TU) is shown to provide excellent reaction control. The increased reaction control provided by the TU occurs in the virtual absence of binding between tnCL and TU, and a mechanistic account for this observation is discussed. The monomer ring strain is measured and found to be similar to δ-valerolactone (VL). Copolymers with VL are synthesized, and the resulting analysis of the copolymer materials properties provides the only known physical characterizations of poly(thio(no)ester-co-ester)s.

Cellulose-Derived Functional Polyacetal by Cationic Ring-Opening Polymerization of Levoglucosenyl Methyl Ether.

Project description:The unsaturated bicyclic acetal levoglucosenyl methyl ether was readily obtained from sustainable feedstock (cellulose) and polymerized by cationic ring-opening polymerization to produce a semicrystalline thermoplastic unsaturated polyacetal with relatively high apparent molar mass (up to ca. 36 kg mol-1 ) and decent dispersity (ca. 1.4). The double bonds along the chain can undergo hydrogenation and thiol-ene reactions as well as crosslinking, thus making this polyacetal potentially interesting as a reactive functional material.

Formation of cyclic structures in the cationic ring-opening polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane.

Project description:The cationic ring-opening polymerization of acetals is prone to cyclization of the polymer chains. This is also the case for the polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane. Literature states that this cyclization can be reduced by applying the Active Monomer mechanism, at least if no competition with the Active Chain End mechanism occurs. In this work, a detailed characterization of the different distributions resulting from the cationic ring-opening polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane via the Active Monomer mechanism is made by a combination of gel permeation chromatography, 1H NMR, and for the first time by matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry. The influence of monomer addition speed, catalyst to initiator ratio and solvent were studied on both kinetics and composition of the product. Furthermore, it was found that increasing the conversion and monomer to initiator ratios leads to an increased amount of cyclic structures and to broader distributions, in correspondence with the Jacobson-Stockmayer theory. Furthermore, ion trapping experiments using 31P NMR provide insights into the actual reaction mechanism. Finally, purification of the products after the reactions led to a reduction of the cyclic fraction.

Two-Dimensional Controlled Syntheses of Polypeptide Molecular Brushes via <i>N</i>-Carboxyanhydride Ring-Opening Polymerization and Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization.

Project description:Well-defined molecular brushes bearing polypeptides as side chains were prepared by a "grafting through" synthetic strategy with two-dimensional control over the brush molecular architectures. By integrating N-carboxyanhydride ring-opening polymerizations (NCA ROPs) and ring-opening metathesis polymerizations (ROMPs), desirable segment lengths of polypeptide side chains and polynorbornene brush backbones were independently constructed in controlled manners. The N2 flow accelerated NCA ROP was utilized to prepare polypeptide macromonomers with different lengths initiated from a norbornene-based primary amine, and those macromonomers were then polymerized via ROMP. It was found that a mixture of dichloromethane and an ionic liquid were required as the solvent system to allow for construction of molecular brush polymers having densely-grafted peptide chains emanating from a polynorbornene backbone, poly(norbornene-graft-poly(β-benzyl-l-aspartate)) (P(NB-g-PBLA)). Highly efficient postpolymerization modification was achieved by aminolysis of PBLA side chains for facile installment of functional moieties onto the molecular brushes.
