Slip in adhesion tests of a Kaolin clay.

ABSTRACT: Adhesion tests were performed on concentrated suspensions of Kaolin clay. At low concentrations samples formed conical deposits on both the top and bottom plates with the central region narrowing to a filament before undergoing breakup. In contrast high concentration samples deformed as a cylinder before apparently fracturing into two pieces. As the concentration of the samples was increased the samples underwent quite different forms of slip which it is shown can be deduced from their respective force distance curves. The type of slip behaviour for a given concentration of clay could be modified with changes to surface roughness, the initial compressive load prior to an experiment and with the separation velocity of the plates. The different slip characteristics appear to arise from the concentration dependent way in which particles interact with the rough surface topography.

Subseismic to Seismic Slip in Smectite Clay Nanofoliation.

Project description:Smectite clays are the main constituent of slipping zones found in subduction zone faults at shallow depth (e.g., <1-km depth in the Japan Trench) and in the decollements of large landslides (e.g., 1963 landslide, Vajont, Italy). Therefore, deformation processes in smectite clays may control the mechanical behavior from slow creep to fast accelerations and slip during earthquakes and landslides. Here, we use (1) laboratory experiments to investigate the mechanical behavior of partly water-saturated smectite-rich gouges sheared from subseismic to seismic slip rates V and (2) nanoscale microscopy to study the gouge fabric. At all slip rates, deformation localizes in volumes of the gouge layer that contain a "nanofoliation" consisting of anastomosing smectite crystals. "Seismic" nanofoliations produced at V = 0.01, 0.1, and 1.3 m/s are similar to "subseismic" nanofoliations obtained at V = 10-5 m/s. This similarity suggests that frictional slip along water-lubricated smectite grain boundaries and basal planes may occur from subseismic to seismic slip rates in natural smectite-rich faults. Thus, if water is available along smectite grain boundaries and basal planes, nanofoliations can develop from slow to fast slip rates. Still, when nanofoliations are found highly localized in a volume, they can be diagnostic of slip that occurred at rates equal or larger than 0.01 m/s. In such a case, they could be markers of past seismic events when found in natural fault rocks.

Ultra-thin clay layers facilitate seismic slip in carbonate faults.

Project description:Many earthquakes propagate up to the Earth's surface producing surface ruptures. Seismic slip propagation is facilitated by along-fault low dynamic frictional resistance, which is controlled by a number of physico-chemical lubrication mechanisms. In particular, rotary shear experiments conducted at seismic slip rates (1 ms-1) show that phyllosilicates can facilitate co-seismic slip along faults during earthquakes. This evidence is crucial for hazard assessment along oceanic subduction zones, where pelagic clays participate in seismic slip propagation. Conversely, the reason why, in continental domains, co-seismic slip along faults can propagate up to the Earth's surface is still poorly understood. We document the occurrence of micrometer-thick phyllosilicate-bearing layers along a carbonate-hosted seismogenic extensional fault in the central Apennines, Italy. Using friction experiments, we demonstrate that, at seismic slip rates (1 ms-1), similar calcite gouges with pre-existing phyllosilicate-bearing (clay content ≤3 wt.%) micro-layers weaken faster than calcite gouges or mixed calcite-phyllosilicate gouges. We thus propose that, within calcite gouge, ultra-low clay content (≤3 wt.%) localized along micrometer-thick layers can facilitate seismic slip propagation during earthquakes in continental domains, possibly enhancing surface displacement.

Effect of Kaolin Clay and ZnO-Nanoparticles on the Radiation Shielding Properties of Epoxy Resin Composites.

Project description:The use of radiation is mandatory in modern life, but the harms of radiation cannot be avoided. To minimize the effect of radiation, protection is required for the safety of the environment and human life. Hence, inventing a better shield than a conventional shielding material is the priority of researchers. Due to this reason, this current research deals with an innovative shielding material named EKZ samples having a composition of (epoxy resin (90-40) wt %-kaolin clay (10-25) wt %-ZnO-nano particles (0-35) wt %). The numerous compositional variations of (epoxy resin, kaolin clay, and ZnO-nano particles on the prepared EKZ samples varied the density of the samples from 1.24 to 1.95 g/cm3. The radiation shielding parameter of linear attenuation coefficient (LAC), half value layer (HVL), tenth value layer (TVL), and radiation protection efficiency (RPE) were measured to evaluate the radiation diffusion efficiency of newly made EKZ samples. These radiation shielding parameters were measured with the help of the HPGe detector utilizing the three-point sources (Am-241, Cs-137, and Co-60). The obtained results exposed that the value of linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) and radiation protection efficiency (RPE) was maximum, yet the value of half value layer (HVL), and tenth value layer (TVL), were minimum due to the greater amount of kaolin clay and ZnO-nanoparticles, whereas the amount of epoxy resin was lesser. In addition, it has been clear that as-prepared EKZ samples are suitable for low-dose shielding applications as well as EKZ-35 showed a better shielding ability.

Engineered Geomedia Kaolin Clay-Reduced Graphene Oxide-Polymer Composite for the Remediation of Olaquindox from Water.

Project description:Globally, there is an upsurge in the use of unregulated veterinary pharmaceuticals with enhanced release into the environment, resulting in water pollution, which is difficult to remediate. To address this issue, we synthesized and characterized highly hydrophobic three-dimensional ordered engineered geomedia with multiple channels. Kaolin clay (K) was functionalized with either graphene oxide (GO) synthesized via Tour's method or reduced GO in situ with covalently linked methoxyether polyethylene glycol (GO-PEG) using a simple and easily scalable amidation reaction. This was done to enhance the adsorption of olaquindox, a veterinary antibiotic. The X-ray diffraction profile confirmed the grafting of GO and GO-PEG to kaolin. Morphological analysis revealed the architecture of thin films of GO/GO-PEG grafted on the kaolin surface with extensive porosity. Energy-dispersive X-ray mapping, infra-red spectra, and elemental analysis confirmed the successful synthesis of the engineered geomedia composite of K, GO/rGO, and PEG (KrGO-PEG). Due to multiple surface functional groups of polyamide and amido-carbonic groups on the KrGO-PEG composite, it was suitable for olaquindox adsorption. In batch sorption studies of 0.5XKrO-PEG, the effect of pH (2-10) was negligible but with fast equilibrium time (2-1440 min) at 30 min, while the kinetics and equilibrium data suited the pseudo-second order and Langmuir models, respectively. The maximum adsorption value obtained for the composite was 59.5 mg/g; the higher the GO content, the higher the adsorption. The sorption mechanism was majorly through hydrophobic and π-π interactions. Regenerated/reused adsorbents after 4 cycles had the same efficacy in remediating olaquindox from simulated/real water.

Ideal, catch, and slip bonds in cadherin adhesion.

Project description:Classical cadherin cell-cell adhesion proteins play key morphogenetic roles during development and are essential for maintaining tissue integrity in multicellular organisms. Classical cadherins bind in two distinct conformations, X-dimer and strand-swap dimer; during cellular rearrangements, these adhesive states are exposed to mechanical stress. However, the molecular mechanisms by which cadherins resist tensile force and the pathway by which they convert between different conformations are unclear. Here, we use single molecule force measurements with an atomic force microscope (AFM) to show that E-cadherin, a prototypical classical cadherin, forms three types of adhesive bonds: catch bonds, which become longer lived in the presence of tensile force; slip bonds, which become shorter lived when pulled; and ideal bonds that are insensitive to mechanical stress. We show that X-dimers form catch bonds, whereas strand-swap dimers form slip bonds. Our data suggests that ideal bonds are formed as X-dimers convert to strand-swap binding. Catch, slip, and ideal bonds allow cadherins to withstand tensile force and tune the mechanical properties of adhesive junctions.

Understanding Iron Impurities in Australian Kaolin and Their Effect on Acid and Heat Activation Processes of Clay.

Project description:Iron impurities present in the crystal structure of kaolin minerals or in accessory species are frequently encountered in clay deposits. As knowledge of the location and states of the iron is crucial when modifying the properties of clays by activation, it is important that new deposits are well characterized in terms of the amount and location of this metal. The Western Australia Noombenberry deposit has been identified as a large resource of kaolin composed largely of halloysite and kaolinite. We sampled six from one hundred drill holes and grouped them according to major mineral and iron impurities. First, we characterized them to understand the source of iron impurities. Then, we performed three physicochemical activation processes of samples involving acid treatment (by 3 M HCl), heating at 600 °C, and a combination of both. State-of-the-art tools, including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance, revealed the properties of kaolin, iron impurities, and the changes incurred after activation. The iron impurities were found to be linked to non-kaolin minerals, i.e., in mica or illite. Once the iron was removed mainly by acid activation, the surface area, pore volume, and negative surface charges increased, and that was significant for halloysite-rich samples. These properties helped adsorb N2 gas compared to the raw kaolin. Therefore, knowing the iron's location and states in associated mineral species and their dissolution/retention may expand the scope of material development for gas adsorption. They are also useful in other applications like clay purification and adsorbent or additive formulations.

Modified natural kaolin clay as an active, selective, and stable catalyst for methanol dehydration to dimethyl ether.

Project description:In this work, the production of dimethyl ether (DME) from methanol over natural kaolin clay modified through impregnation with various percentages of H2SO4, WO3, or ZrO2 catalysts was investigated. The prepared catalysts were characterized via X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and N2-sorption analysis. The acidity of these catalysts was determined through the dehydration of isopropyl alcohol and the chemisorption of pyridine. The catalytic activity performance revealed that the addition of modifiers into kaolin enhanced the latter's activity toward DME production. In addition, the kaolin clay modified with 10 wt% ZrO2 exhibited excellent activity of 98% conversion with 100% selectivity at 275 °C. Moreover, this catalyst could proceed the reaction for a long time (6 days) without any noticeable deactivation. The remarkable improvement in the catalytic performance achievement was well correlated with the acidity and the structure of the catalysts.

Cardiac desmosomal adhesion relies on ideal-, slip- and catch bonds.

Project description:The cardiac muscle consists of individual cardiomyocytes that are mechanically linked by desmosomes. Desmosomal adhesion is mediated by densely packed and organized cadherins which, in presence of Ca2+, stretch out their extracellular domains (EC) and dimerize with opposing binding partners by exchanging an N-terminal tryptophan. The strand-swap binding motif of cardiac cadherins like desmocollin 2 (Dsc2) (and desmoglein2 alike) is highly specific but of low affinity with average bond lifetimes in the range of approximately 0.3 s. Notably, despite this comparatively weak interaction, desmosomes mediate a stable, tensile-resistant bond. In addition, force mediated dissociation of strand-swap dimers exhibit a reduced bond lifetime as external forces increase (slip bond). Using atomic force microscopy based single molecule force spectroscopy (AFM-SMFS), we demonstrate that Dsc2 has two further binding modes that, in addition to strand-swap dimers, most likely play a significant role in the integrity of the cardiac muscle. At short interaction times, the Dsc2 monomers associate only loosely, as can be seen from short-lived force-independent bonds. These ideal bonds are a precursor state and probably stabilize the formation of the self-inhibiting strand-swap dimer. The addition of tryptophan in the measurement buffer acts as a competitive inhibitor, preventing the N-terminal strand exchange. Here, Dsc2 dimerizes as X-dimer which clearly shows a tri-phasic slip-catch-slip type of dissociation. Within the force-mediated transition (catch) regime, Dsc2 dimers switch between a rather brittle low force and a strengthened high force adhesion state. As a result, we can assume that desmosomal adhesion is mediated not only by strand-swap dimers (slip) but also by their precursor states (ideal bond) and force-activated X-dimers (catch bond).

Immobilization of thermostable exo-inulinase from mutant thermophilic Aspergillus tamarii-U4 using kaolin clay and its application in inulin hydrolysis.

Project description:In this study, attempts were made to immobilize purified exo-inulinase from mutant thermophic Aspergillus tamarii-U4 onto Kaolinite clay by covalent bonding cross-linked with glutaraldehyde with an immobilization yield of 66% achieved. The free and immobilized inulinases were then characterized and characterization of the enzymes revealed that temperature and pH optima for the activity of the free and immobilized enzymes were both 65 °C and pH 4.5 respectively. The free inulinase completely lost its activity after incubation at 65 °C for 6 h while the immobilized inulinase retained 16.4% of its activity under the same condition of temperature and incubation time. The estimated kinetic parameters Km and Vmax for the free inulinase as estimated from Lineweaver-Burk plots were 0.39 mM and 4.21 µmol/min for the free inulinase and 0.37 mM and 4.01 µmol/min for the immobilized inulinase respectively. Inulin at 2.5% (w/v) and a flow rate of 0.1 mL was completely hydrolysed for 10 days at 60 °C in a continuous packed bed column and the operational stability of the system revealed that the half-life of the immobilized inulinase was 51 days. These properties make the immobilized exo-inulinase from Aspergillus tamarii-U4 a potential candidate for the production of fructose from inulin hydrolysis.

Enhancing cancer cell adhesion with clay nanoparticles for countering metastasis.

Project description:Cancer metastasis results from the suppression of adhesion between cancer cells and the extracellular matrix, causing their migration from the primary tumor location and the subsequent formation of tumors in distant organs. This study demonstrates the potential use of nano-sized clay mineral particles to modulate adhesions between tumor cells and with the surrounding extracellular matrix. Atomic force microscopy studies of live cell cultures reveal a significant increase in adhesion between tumor cells and their environment after treatment with different types of electrically charged clay nanoparticles. The enhancement of adhesion among cancer cells was further confirmed through scratch type of wound healing assay studies. To provide insight into the adhesion mechanisms introduced by the clay nanoparticles, we performed a molecular-level computer simulation of cell adhesions in the presence and absence of the nanoparticles. Strong van der Waals and electrostatic attractions modelled in the molecular simulations result in an increase in the cohesive energy density of these environments when treated with clay crystallites. The increase in the cohesive energy density after the sorption of clay crystallites on cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix complexes lends weight to our strategy of using clay nanoparticles for the restoration of adhesion among cancer cells and prevention of metastasis.
