Scalable Production of Ambient Stable Hybrid Bismuth-Based Materials: AACVD of Phenethylammonium Bismuth Iodide Films*.

ABSTRACT: Large homogeneous and adherent coatings of phenethylammonium bismuth iodide were produced using the cost-effective and scalable aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD) methodology. The film morphology was found to depend on the deposition conditions and substrates, resulting in different optical properties to those reported from their spin-coated counterparts. Optoelectronic characterization revealed band bending effects occurring between the hybrid material and semiconducting substrates (TiO₂ and FTO) due to heterojunction formation, and the optical bandgap of the hybrid material was calculated from UV-visible and PL spectrometry to be 2.05 eV. Maximum values for hydrophobicity and crystallographic preferential orientation were observed for films deposited on FTO/glass substrates, closely followed by values from films deposited on TiO₂ /glass substrates.

Thin films of formamidinium lead iodide (FAPI) deposited using aerosol assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD).

Project description:Formamidinium lead iodide (CH(NH2)2PbI3, FAPI) thin films have been deposited on glass substrates at 150 °C using ambient pressure aerosol assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD). The films have been analysed by a range of techniques including powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy. Sharp reflections in the pXRD pattern can be indexed to the α-phase of FAPI which confirms the crystallinity of the as-deposited film and reveals a preferred growth orientation along the (002) plane with respect to the substrate. High magnification SEM images show that the thin film is comprised of a network of intimately connected FAPI crystallites which form a mesoporous architecture. EDX mapping of lead and iodine emission peaks show that the Pb and I within these films are spatially co-localised. Optical measurements show as-deposited FAPI films have absorption onsets in the near infra-red with a direct bandgap value of 1.46 eV, suitable for single junction solar cells. Four-point probe measurement of as deposited films show that the electrical conductivity (σ) of the FAPI thin film is 5.2 × 10-7 S/cm, which is similar to FAPI thin films deposited by spin coating technique.

Ambient Temperature Stable, Scalable COVID-19 Polymer Particle Vaccines Induce Protective Immunity.

Project description:There is an unmet need for safe and effective severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines that are stable and can be cost-effectively produced at large scale. Here, a biopolymer particle (BP) vaccine technology that can be quickly adapted to new and emerging variants of SARS-CoV-2 is used. Coronavirus antigen-coated BPs are described as vaccines against SARS-CoV-2. The spike protein subunit S1 or epitopes from S and M proteins (SM) plus/minus the nucleocapsid protein (N) are selected as antigens to either coat BPs during assembly inside engineered Escherichia coli or BPs are engineered to specifically ligate glycosylated spike protein (S1-ICC) produced by using baculovirus expression in insect cell culture (ICC). BP vaccines are safe and immunogenic in mice. BP vaccines, SM-BP-N and S1-ICC-BP induced protective immunity in the hamster SARS-CoV-2 infection model as shown by reduction of virus titers up to viral clearance in lungs post infection. The BP platform offers the possibility for rapid design and cost-effective large-scale manufacture of ambient temperature stable and globally available vaccines to combat the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Hybrid Oleate-Iodide Ligand Shell for Air-Stable PbSe Nanocrystals and Superstructures.

Project description:A postsynthetic treatment is presented to improve the air stability of PbSe nanocrystals (NCs) and PbSe square superstructures. The addition of z-type Pb(oleate)2 ligands together with x-type iodide ligands creates a hybrid ligand shell containing both ligands. The air stability of the PbSe NCs is checked by enduring absorption spectroscopy under ambient conditions. With a combined NaI + Pb(oleate)2 treatment, the absorption spectrum remains unchanged for several days under ambient conditions. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy shows that the surface coordination of the oleate ligands changes by the chemical treatment: from mixed chelating bidentate + bridging to Pb for the pristine nanocrystals to almost exclusive chelating bidentate coordination after chemical passivation. The shift of the C-H stretching vibration shows that the oleate hydrocarbon layer is in a more liquidlike state after the chemical treatment, suggesting that oleate and iodide ligands are often present on adjacent surface positions.

Bismuth-Based Free-Standing Electrodes for Ambient-Condition Ammonia Production in Neutral Media.

Project description:Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction is a carbon-free and energy-saving strategy for efficient synthesis of ammonia under ambient conditions. Here, we report the synthesis of nanosized Bi2O3 particles grown on functionalized exfoliated graphene (Bi2O3/FEG) via a facile electrochemical deposition method. The obtained free-standing Bi2O3/FEG achieves a high Faradaic efficiency of 11.2% and a large NH3 yield of 4.21 ± 0.14 [Formula: see text] h-1 cm-2 at - 0.5 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode in 0.1 M Na2SO4, better than that in the strong acidic and basic media. Benefiting from its strong interaction of Bi 6p band with the N 2p orbitals, binder-free characteristic, and facile electron transfer, Bi2O3/FEG achieves superior catalytic performance and excellent long-term stability as compared with most of the previous reported catalysts. This study is significant to design low-cost, high-efficient Bi-based electrocatalysts for electrochemical ammonia synthesis.

Strongly photoluminescent and radioluminescent copper(i) iodide hybrid materials made of coordinated ionic chains.

Project description:Scintillation-based X-ray detection has been widely used in various fields from medical diagnostics to security. In this study, we report four new CuI-based hybrid materials consisting of anionic inorganic chains coordinated to cationic ligands. Due to their unique bonding nature, these compounds demonstrate high stability, solution processability, and efficient photoluminescence with photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) reaching ∼85%. Their X-ray scintillation properties are characterized by high light yield comparable to that of commercially available scintillators, an excellent linear response to the X-ray dose rate, a low detection limit, and radio-robustness. In addition, the emission mechanisms and structure-property relationships are also analyzed using both experimental and theoretical methods. These findings suggest possibilities for developing new and high-performance CuI-based hybrid materials for efficient radiation detection and imaging.

Scalable Lentiviral Vector Production Using Stable HEK293SF Producer Cell Lines.

Project description:Lentiviral vectors (LV) represent a key tool for gene and cell therapy applications. The production of these vectors in sufficient quantities for clinical applications remains a hurdle, prompting the field toward developing suspension processes that are conducive to large-scale production. This study describes a LV production strategy using a stable inducible producer cell line. The HEK293 cell line employed grows in suspension, thus offering direct scalability, and produces a green fluorescent protein (GFP)-expressing lentiviral vector in the 106 transduction units (TU)/mL range without optimization. The stable producer cell line, called clone 92, was derived by stable transfection from a packaging cell line with a plasmid encoding the transgene GFP. The packaging cell line expresses all the other necessary components to produce LV upon induction with cumate and doxycycline. First, the study demonstrated that LV production using clone 92 is scalable from 20 mL shake flasks to 3 L bioreactors. Next, two strategies were developed for high-yield LV production in perfusion mode using acoustic cell filter technology in 1-3 L bioreactors. The first approach uses a basal commercial medium and perfusion mode both pre- and post-induction for increasing cell density and LV recovery. The second approach makes use of a fortified medium formulation to achieve target cell density for induction in batch mode, followed by perfusion mode after induction. Using these perfusion-based strategies, the titer was improved to 3.2 × 107 TU/mL. As a result, cumulative functional LV titers were increased by up to 15-fold compared to batch mode, reaching a cumulative total yield of 8 × 1010 TU/L of bioreactor culture. This approach is easily amenable to large-scale production and commercial manufacturing.

AACVD Synthesis and Characterization of Iron and Copper Oxides Modified ZnO Structured Films.

Project description:Non-modified (ZnO) and modified (Fe2O3@ZnO and CuO@ZnO) structured films are deposited via aerosol assisted chemical vapor deposition. The surface modification of ZnO with iron or copper oxides is achieved in a second aerosol assisted chemical vapor deposition step and the characterization of morphology, structure, and surface of these new structured films is discussed. X-ray photoelectron spectrometry and X-ray diffraction corroborate the formation of ZnO, Fe2O3, and CuO and the electron microscopy images show the morphological and crystalline characteristics of these structured films. Static water contact angle measurements for these structured films indicate hydrophobic behavior with the modified structures showing higher contact angles compared to the non-modified films. Overall, results show that the modification of ZnO with iron or copper oxides enhances the hydrophobic behavior of the surface, increasing the contact angle of the water drops at the non-modified ZnO structures from 122 to 135 and 145 for Fe2O3@ZnO and CuO@ZnO, respectively. This is attributed to the different surface properties of the films including the morphology and chemical composition.

Scalable Lead Acetate-Based Perovskite Thin Films Prepared via Controlled Nucleation and Growth under Near Ambient Conditions.

Project description:Lead acetate (PbAc2) is a promising precursor salt for large-scale production of perovskite solar cells, as its high solubility in polar solvents enables the use of scalable deposition methods such as inkjet printing and dip coating. In this study, uniform (40-230 nm) PbAc2 thin films were prepared via dip coating under near ambient lab conditions by tuning the PbAc2 precursor concentration. In a second step, these PbAc2 films were converted to methylammonium lead iodide (MAPI) perovskite by immersing them into methylammonium iodide (MAI) solutions. The nucleation and growth processes at play were controlled by altering key parameters, such as air humidity during the lead acetate deposition and MAI concentration when converting the PbAc2 film to MAPI. The research revealed that lead acetate is sensitive toward humidity and can undergo hydroxylation reactions affecting the reproducibility and quality of the produced solar cells. However, drying the PbAc2 films under low relative humidity (<1%) prior to conversion enables the production of high-quality MAPI films without the need of glovebox processing. Furthermore, SEM characterization revealed that the surface coverage of the MAPI film increased significantly with an increase of the MAI concentration at the conversion stage. The resulting morphology of the MAPI films can be explained by a standard nucleation and growth mechanism. Preliminary solar cells were produced using these MAPI films as the active layer. The best performing devices were obtained with a 140 nm thick lead acetate film converted to MAPI using a 12 mg/mL MAI solution, as these parameters resulted in a good surface coverage of the MAPI film. The results show that the methodology holds potential toward large-scale production of perovskite solar cells under near ambient conditions, which substantially simplifies the fabrication and lowers the production costs.

Zero-Dimensional Methylammonium Bismuth Iodide-Based Lead-Free Perovskite Capacitor.

Project description:Symmetrical electrochemical capacitors are attracting immense attention because of their fast charging-discharging ability, high energy density, and low cost of production. The current research in this area is mainly focused on exploring novel low-cost electrode materials with higher energy and power densities. In the present work, we fabricated an electrochemical double-layer capacitor using methylammonium bismuth iodide (CH3NH3)3Bi2I9, a lead-free, zero-dimensional hybrid perovskite material. A maximum areal capacitance of 5.5 mF/cm2 was obtained, and the device retained 84.8% of its initial maximum capacitance even after 10 000 charge-discharge cycles. Impedance spectroscopy measurements revealed that the active layer provides a high surface area for the electrolyte to access. As a result, the charge transport resistance is reasonably low, which is advantageous for delivering excellent performance.

Scalable Solution-Processed Fabrication Approach for High-Performance Silver Nanowire/MXene Hybrid Transparent Conductive Films.

Project description:The transparent conductive films (TCFs) based on silver nanowires are expected to be a next-generation electrode for flexible electronics. However, their defects such as easy oxidation and high junction resistance limit its wide application in practical situations. Herein, a method of coating Ti3C2Tx with different sizes was proposed to prepare silver nanowire/MXene composite films. The solution-processed silver nanowire (AgNW) networks were patched and welded by capillary force effect through the double-coatings of small and large MXene nanosheets. The sheet resistance of the optimized AgNW/MXene TCFs was 15.1 Ω/sq, the optical transmittance at 550 nm was 89.3%, and the figure of merit value was 214.4. Moreover, the AgNW/MXene TCF showed higher stability at 1600 mechanical bending, annealing at 100 °C for 50 h, and exposure to ambient air for 40 days. These results indicate that the novel AgNW/MXene TCFs have a great potential for high-performance flexible optoelectronic devices.
