Construction of 1D Heterostructure NiCo@C/ZnO Nanorod with Enhanced Microwave Absorption.

ABSTRACT: Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have a special structure and atom composition, which are expected to be an excellent electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorber. However, it is still a problem that obtaining excellent EMW-absorbing materials from LDHs. Herein, we designed heterostructure NiCo-LDHs@ZnO nanorod and then subsequent heat treating to derive NiCo@C/ZnO composites. Finally, with the synergy of excellent dielectric loss and magnetic loss, an outstanding absorption performance could be achieved with the reflection loss of - 60.97 dB at the matching thickness of 2.3 mm, and the widest absorption bandwidth of 6.08 GHz was realized at 2.0 mm. Moreover, this research work provides a reference for the development and utilization of LDHs materials in the field of microwave absorption materials and can also provide ideas for the design of layered structural absorbers.

Plasmon-enhanced Electrically Light-emitting from ZnO Nanorod Arrays/p-GaN Heterostructure Devices.

Project description:Effective and bright light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) have attracted broad interests in fundamental research and industrial application, especially on short wavelength LEDs. In this paper, a well aligned ZnO nanorod arrays grown on the p-GaN substrate to form a heterostructured light-emitting diode and Al nanoparticles (NPs) were decorated to improve the electroluminescence performance. More than 30-folds enhancement of the electroluminescence intensity was obtained compared with the device without Al NPs decoration. The investigation on the stable and transient photoluminescence spectraof the ZnO nanorod arrays before and after Al NPs decoration demonstrated that the metal surface plasmon resonance coupling with excitons of ZnO leads to the enhancement of the internal quantum efficiency (IQE). Our results provide aneffective approach to design novel optoelectronic devices such as light-emitting diodes and plasmonic nanolasers.

3D Ultralight Hollow NiCo Compound@MXene Composites for Tunable and High-Efficient Microwave Absorption.

Project description:The 3D hollow hierarchical architectures tend to be designed for inhibiting stack of MXene flakes to obtain satisfactory lightweight, high-efficient and broadband absorbers. Herein, the hollow NiCo compound@MXene networks were prepared by etching the ZIF 67 template and subsequently anchoring the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets through electrostatic self-assembly. The electromagnetic parameters and microwave absorption property can be distinctly or slightly regulated by adjusting the filler loading and decoration of Ti3C2Tx nanoflakes. Based on the synergistic effects of multi-components and special well-constructed structure, NiCo layered double hydroxides@Ti3C2Tx (LDHT-9) absorber remarkably achieves unexpected effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.72 GHz with a thickness of 2.10 mm, covering the entire Ku-band. After calcination, transition metal oxide@Ti3C2Tx (TMOT-21) absorber near the percolation threshold possesses minimum reflection loss (RLmin) value of - 67.22 dB at 1.70 mm within a filler loading of only 5 wt%. This work enlightens a simple strategy for constructing MXene-based composites to achieve high-efficient microwave absorbents with lightweight and tunable EAB.

Microwave Synthesized ZnO Nanorod Arrays for UV Sensors: A Seed Layer Annealing Temperature Study.

Project description:The present work reports the influence of zinc oxide (ZnO) seed layer annealing temperature on structural, optical and electrical properties of ZnO nanorod arrays, synthesized by hydrothermal method assisted by microwave radiation, to be used as UV sensors. The ZnO seed layer was produced using the spin-coating method and several annealing temperatures, ranging from 100 to 500 °C, have been tested. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and spectrophotometry measurements have been used to investigate the structure, morphology, and optical properties variations of the produced ZnO nanorod arrays regarding the seed layer annealing temperatures employed. After the growth of ZnO nanorod arrays, the whole structure was tested as UV sensors, showing an increase in the sensitivity with the increase of seed layer annealing temperature. The UV sensor response of ZnO nanorod arrays produced with the seed layer annealed temperature of 500 °C was 50 times superior to the ones produced with a seed layer annealed at 100 °C.

Multicomponent Nanoparticles Synergistic One-Dimensional Nanofibers as Heterostructure Absorbers for Tunable and Efficient Microwave Absorption.

Project description:Application of novel radio technologies and equipment inevitably leads to electromagnetic pollution. One-dimensional polymer-based composite membrane structures have been shown to be an effective strategy to obtain high-performance microwave absorbers. Herein, we reported a one-dimensional N-doped carbon nanofibers material which encapsulated the hollow Co3SnC0.7 nanocubes in the fiber lumen by electrospinning. Space charge stacking formed between nanoparticles can be channeled by longitudinal fibrous structures. The dielectric constant of the fibers is highly related to the carbonization temperature, and the great impedance matching can be achieved by synergetic effect between Co3SnC0.7 and carbon network. At 800 °C, the necklace-like Co3SnC0.7/CNF with 5% low load achieves an excellent RL value of - 51.2 dB at 2.3 mm and the effective absorption bandwidth of 7.44 GHz with matching thickness of 2.5 mm. The multiple electromagnetic wave (EMW) reflections and interfacial polarization between the fibers and the fibers internal contribute a major effect to attenuating the EMW. These strategies for regulating electromagnetic performance can be expanded to other electromagnetic functional materials which facilitate the development of emerging absorbers.

Enhanced Acetone Sensing Properties Based on Au-Pd Decorated ZnO Nanorod Gas Sensor.

Project description:The mature processes of metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have attracted considerable interest. However, the low sensitivity of metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors is still challenging, and constrains its practical applications. Bimetallic nanoparticles are of interest owing to their excellent catalytic properties. This excellent feature of bimetallic nanoparticles can solve the problems existing in MOS gas sensors, such as the low response, high operating temperature and slow response time. To enhance acetone sensing performance, we successfully synthesized Au-Pd/ZnO nanorods. In this work, we discovered that Au-Pd nanoparticles modified on ZnO nanorods can remarkably enhance sensor response. The Au-Pd/ZnO gas sensor has long-term stability and an excellent response/recovery process. This excellent sensing performance is attributed to the synergistic catalytic effect of bimetallic AuPd nanoparticles. Moreover, the electronic and chemical sensitization of noble metals also makes a great contribution. This work presents a simple method for preparing Au-Pd/ZnO nanorods and provides a new solution for the detection of acetone based on metal oxide semiconductor.

Plasmon Enhanced Second Harmonic Generation from ZnO Nanofilms on Vertical Au Nanorod Arrays.

Project description:Vertically aligned gold nanorod arrays have attracted much attention for their fascinating optical properties. Different from longitudinal surface plasmon wavelength (LSPW) and edge-to-edge spacing of gold nanorods, the role of gold nanorod diameter in plasmonic enhancement ability of vertical gold nanorod arrays has rarely been explored. In this work, we selected gold nanorods with similar LSPW but two different diameters (22 and 41 nm), the optical properties of which are dominated by absorption and scattering cross sections, respectively. The vertically aligned arrays of these gold nanorods formed by evaporation self-assembly are coupled with nonlinear ZnO nanocrystal films spin-coated on their surfaces. It was found that the gold nanorod array with a larger diameter can enhance the second harmonic generation (SHG) of ZnO nanofilm by a factor of 27.0, while it is about 7.3 for the smaller gold nanorod array. Theoretical simulations indicate that such stronger enhancement of the larger vertical gold nanorod array compared with the smaller one is due to its stronger scattering ability and greater extent of near-field enhancement at SHG fundamental wavelength. Our work shows that the diameter of gold nanorods is also an important factor to be considered in realizing strong plasmon enhancement of vertically aligned gold nanorod arrays.

Enhanced hybrid photocatalytic dry reforming using a phosphated Ni-CeO2 nanorod heterostructure.

Project description:Operating the dry reforming reaction photocatalytically presents an opportunity to produce commodity chemicals from two greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide and methane, however, the top-performing photocatalysts presented in the academic literature invariably rely on the use of precious metals. In this work, we demonstrate enhanced photocatalytic dry reforming performance through surface basicity modulation of a Ni-CeO2 photocatalyst by selectively phosphating the surface of the CeO2 nanorod support. An optimum phosphate content is observed, which leads to little photoactivity loss and carbon deposition over a 50-hour reaction period. The enhanced activity is attributed to the Lewis basic properties of the PO43- groups which improve CO2 adsorption and facilitate the formation of small nickel metal clusters on the support surface, as well as the mechanical stability of CePO4. A hybrid photochemical-photothermal reaction mechanism is demonstrated by analyzing the wavelength-dependent photocatalytic activities. The activities, turnover numbers, quantum efficiencies, and energy efficiencies are shown to be on par with other dry-reforming photocatalysts that use noble metals, representing a step forward in understanding how to stabilize ignoble nickel-based dry reforming photocatalysts. The challenges associated with comparing the performance of photocatalysts reported in the academic literature are also commented on.

Titania Enhanced Photocatalysis and Dye Giant Absorption in Nanoporous 1D Bragg Microcavities.

Project description:Light trapping effects are known to boost the photocatalytic degradation of organic molecules in 3D photonic structures of anatase titania (a-TiO2) with an inverse opal configuration. In the present work, we show that photocatalytic activity can also be enhanced in a-TiO2 thin films if they are incorporated within a nanoporous 1D optical resonant microcavity. We have designed and manufactured multilayer systems that, presenting a high open porosity to enable a straightforward diffusion of photodegradable molecules, provide light confinement effects at wavelengths around the absorption edge of photoactive a-TiO2. In brief, we have observed that a nanoporous 1D Bragg microcavity prepared by electron beam evaporation at oblique angles comprising a central defect layer of nanoporous a-TiO2 boosts the photocatalytic degradation of nitrobenzene and methyl orange dye solutions. The multilayer structure of the microcavity was designed to ensure the appearance of optical resonances at the a-TiO2 layer location and wavelengths around the absorption onset of this semiconductor. In this porous 1D Bragg microcavity, the diffusion constraints of molecules through the capping layers covering the a-TiO2 are effectively compensated by an increase in the photocatalytic activity due to the light confinement phenomena. We also report that the absorption coefficient of methyl orange dye solution infiltrated within the pore structure of the microcavity is exalted at the wavelengths of the corresponding optical resonances. This effect gives rise to a small but non-negligible visible light photodegradation of dye molecules. The possibilities of tailoring the design of 1D photonic systems to boost the photocatalytic activity of a-TiO2 are discussed.

Two-Dimensional Cr5Te8@Graphite Heterostructure for Efficient Electromagnetic Microwave Absorption.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) hold great promise as novel microwave absorption materials owing to their interlayer interactions and unique magnetoelectric properties. However, overcoming the impedance mismatch at the low loading is still a challenge for TMCs due to the restricted loss pathways caused by their high-density characteristic. Here, an interface engineering based on the heterostructure of 2D Cr5Te8 and graphite is in situ constructed via a one-step chemical vapor deposit to modulate impedance matching and introduce multiple attenuation mechanisms. Intriguingly, the Cr5Te8@EG (ECT) heterostructure exhibits a minimum reflection loss of up to - 57.6 dB at 15.4 GHz with a thin thickness of only 1.4 mm under a low filling rate of 10%. The density functional theory calculations confirm that the splendid performance of ECT heterostructure primarily derives from charge redistribution at the abundant intimate interfaces, thereby reinforcing interfacial polarization loss. Furthermore, the ECT coating displays a remarkable radar cross section reduction of 31.9 dB m2, demonstrating a great radar microwave scattering ability. This work sheds light on the interfacial coupled stimulus response mechanism of TMC-based heterogeneous structures and provides a feasible strategy to manipulate high-quality TMCs for excellent microwave absorbers.

Construction of one-dimensional MoO2/NC heteronanowires for microwave absorption.

Project description:A combination of a special micro-nanostructure and multiple components has been proven as an effective strategy to strengthen the microwave attenuation capacity. In this work, one-dimensional MoO2/N-doped carbon (NC) nanowires with a heterostructure have been successfully prepared by utilizing mild in situ chemical oxidative polymerization and pyrolysis treatment. After compounding them with a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrix, the flexible composites exhibit tunable wave absorbing performance by modulating the filler loading of MoO2/NC heteronanowires. Experimental results demonstrate that the minimum reflection loss value of the MoO2/NC-TPU hybrid is up to -35.0 dB at 8.37 GHz under a thickness of only 2.3 mm with 40 wt% filler amounts. Moreover, the effective absorption bandwidth enables 3.26 GHz to be achieved (8.49-11.75 GHz) when the thickness changes to 2.0 mm, covering almost the whole X-band. Meanwhile, when the filler loading becomes 30 wt%, dual-absorption peaks appear. The relevant absorption mechanism is mainly attributed to the dielectric loss including strong dipolar/interfacial polarizations, Debye relaxation loss and multiple reflection and scattering.
