Factors impacting resilience as a result of exposure to COVID-19: The ecological resilience model.

ABSTRACT: Despite the severe psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, some individuals do not develop high levels of psychological distress and can be termed resilient. Using the ecological resilience model, we examined factors promoting or hindering resilience in the COVID-19 pandemic. Of the 1034 participants (49.9±16.2 years; females 51.2%) from Italian general population, 70% displayed resilient outcomes and 30% reported moderate-severe anxiety and/or depression. A binary regression model revealed that factors promoting resilience were mostly psychological (e.g., trait resilience, conscientiousness) together with social distancing. Conversely, factors hindering resilience included COVID-19-anxiety, COVID-19-related PTSD symptoms, intolerance of uncertainty, loneliness, living with children, higher education, and living in regions where the virus was starting to spread. In conclusion, the ecological resilience model in the COVID-19 pandemic explained 64% of the variance and identified factors promoting or hindering resilient outcomes. Critically, these findings can inform psychological interventions supporting individuals by strengthening factors associated with resilience.

Project description:BackgroundThe pandemic caused by COVID-19 has meant for spanish citizens a constant adaptation to health measures in order to try to stop transmission of the virus. During this adaptation process, different psychosocial aspects have caused consequences for people?s mental health to a greater or lesser extent. Makes sense of an emotional torrent who has gone through fear, anxiety, loneliness and anger. The interaction between perception and reality has given rise to situations where loneliness and social isolation have been imposed and lived with a load of emotional discomfort. In others, social isolation and measures to stop the pandemic have been accepted as a protection system and has been experienced since serenity and the feeling of self-protection fostering individual resilience. Studying the predictors of resilience is going to be key since it is the ideal antidote to stop the appearance of mental disorders associated with the pandemic (such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, social phobia, cleaning obsessions, and generalized anxiety disorder). The objective of this research is to analyze the relationship between resilience and experiential COVID-19 factors.MethodsSample was comprised of Spanish adults (n = 1000; age 18-79 [mean =40.43],793 female, 201 male, and 2 non binary sex). These people participating in an online study focused on the impact of COVID-19 experiences. The research has been cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational design. The instrument created for this research was a specific online questionnaire, including the "Scale of resilience" (RS, Wagnild & Young, 1993, Spanish version, Sánchez-Teruel, et al., 2015). That questionnaire has been administered during the months of April 2022 to July 2022.ResultsThe results obtained show how people who have been able to face the pandemic in a responsive and adaptive way have high resilience. Specifically, those participants that accepting the use of masks, vaccinations and confinement obtained high resilience.ConclusionsUsing public funding and allocating research to the development of programs to promote resilience, adaptative beliefs and prosocial behaviors becomes basic to live in a world in constant change.

Project description:BackgroundUpstream factors have been found to affect COVID-19 vaccination rates and coverage globally. However, there are inadequate details within the African context. This systematic review aims to close this research gap by investigating upstream factors influencing COVID-19 vaccination rates in Africa.MethodsA literature search will be systematically conducted utilizing various databases including: MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCOPUS, CINAHL, Web of Science, and PsycINFO. Eligible studies will include peer-reviewed articles published in the English language from 2020-2023, conducted in Africa, focused on upstream factors, and include one barrier or facilitator to COVID-19 vaccination rates. Two reviewers will use a two-step screening process to examine every article's title, abstract, and full text. A third-party reviewer will resolve disagreements between both individual reviewers. This review will focus on extracting data from published studies to explain the upstream factors included and their impact on COVID-19 vaccination rates across Africa. Data and records will be managed using Covidence. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses [PRISMA] framework will be used as the basis for reporting. To reduce bias, the researchers will use the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool to assess the studies chosen for review. Results will be compiled utilizing four tables to summarize articles and group determinants based on the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR).DiscussionUpstream factors have been cited as affecting population health, vaccination programs, and COVID-19, yet a large-scale systematic review has not been conducted to investigate these factors in relation to COVID-19 vaccination disparities faced in Africa. This review aims to analyze the root causes of African vaccination disparities by focusing on upstream factors. Understanding these factors is vital to help explain why these disparities occur and for designing effective interventions for future vaccinations. The results are expected to provide insights for researchers, policymakers, health systems, and individuals by identifying how resources and efforts can be better utilized to improve vaccination uptake and access.Trial registrationSystematic review registration: CRD42024501293.
