A Newly Designed Water Soluble Uranyl-Salophen Complex for Anion Recognition.

ABSTRACT: A novel water-soluble uranyl-salophen (salophen=N,N'-disalicylidene-o-phenylenediaminate) complex was obtained. Solubility was achieved in aqueous methyl-β-cyclodextrin solutions, taking advantage of the host-guest interactions established with the adamantyl moieties present on the ligand skeleton. Such an approach facilitates the synthesis of the receptor and the purification processes and, in perspective, can be definitely applicable to other molecular scaffolds. UV/Vis titration experiments demonstrate that the capacity of the uranyl-salophen core to behave as a receptor for anions is retained in water and appears comparable with that previously reported for other water-soluble uranyl-salophen systems. Hence the presence of cyclodextrins does not interfere with molecular recognition processes.

Electrocatalytic water oxidation by a Ni(ii) salophen-type complex.

Project description:A new mononuclear Ni(ii) complex, NiL (1), was synthesized from the reaction of Ni(OAc)2·4H2O and salophen-type N2O2-donor ligand, H2L (where H2L = 2,2'-((1E,1'E)-((4-chloro-5-methyl-1,2-phenylene)bis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))diphenol), in ethanol. The obtained complex was characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopic techniques and single crystal X-ray analysis. The complex was studied as a water oxidizing catalyst and its electrocatalytic activity in the water oxidation reaction was tested in 0.5 M of borate buffer at pH = 3, 7 and 11 in a typical three-electrode setup with a carbon paste electrode modified by complex 1 as a working electrode. The linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) curves indicated that complex 1 has a much superior activity and only needs 21 mV vs. Ag/AgCl overvoltage to reach a geometrical catalytic current density of 2.0 mA cm-2 at pH = 11. The onset potential decreased from 1.15 V to 0.67 V vs. Ag/AgCl with an increase of pH from 3 to 13 under a constant current density of 1.0 mA cm-2. Then, to determine the true catalyst for the water oxidation reaction in the presence of complex 1 at pH = 3, 7 and 11, cyclic voltammetry was also performed. The continuous CVs for complex 1 at neutral and alkaline solutions showed significant progress for the water oxidation reaction. In addition, the amperometry tests exhibited excellent stability and high constant current density for water oxidation by CPE-complex 1 under electrochemical conditions at pH = 11 and 7. Although X-ray powder diffraction analysis did not show a pure and crystalline structure for NiO x , the scanning electron microscopy images showed that nickel oxide at pH = 11 and nickel oxide or other Ni-based compounds at pH = 7 are true water oxidizing catalysts on the surface of a CPE electrode. Moreover at pH = 3, no clear water oxidation or NiO x formation was observed.

Enantiomeric Recognition of α-Aminoacids by a Uranyl Salen-Bis-Porphyrin Complex.

Project description:A novel uranyl salen-bis-porphyrin complex, in which two porphyrin subunits and salen moiety were directly linked, was synthesized for the recognition of tetrabutylammonium (TBA) amino acids. This uranyl salen complex, due to the presence of porphyrins with their fluorescence properties, represents the first example of a luminescence of uranyl salen complexes. UV/Vis measurements indicate the formation of 1:1 host-guest complexes, whereas UV-vis and fluorescence studies revealed that this complex acts as a receptor for the enantiomeric recognition of α-aminoacids derivatives, with high association constants and an excellent enantiomeric discrimination between the two enantiomers of phenylalanine-TBA.

Recognition of anion-water clusters by peptide-based supramolecular capsules.

Project description:The biological and technological importance of anion-mediated processes has made the development of improved methods for the selective recognition of anions one of the most relevant research topics today. The hydration sphere of anions plays an important role in the functions performed by anions by forming a variety of cluster complexes. Here we describe a supramolecular capsule that recognizes hydrated anion clusters. These clusters are most likely composed of three ions that form hydrated C3 symmetry complexes that are entrapped within the supramolecular capsule of the same symmetry. The capsule is made of self-assembled α,γ-cyclic peptide containing amino acid with by five-membered rings and equipped with a tris(triazolylethyl)amine cap. To recognise the hydrated anion clusters, the hexapeptide capsule must disassemble to entrap them between its two subunits.

BetaCore, a designed water soluble four-stranded antiparallel beta-sheet protein.

Project description:BetaCore is a designed approximately 50-residue protein in which two BPTI-derived core modules, CM I and CM II, are connected by a 22-atom cross-link. At low temperature and pH 3, homo- and heteronuclear NMR data report a dominant folded ('f') conformation with well-dispersed chemical shifts, i, i+1 periodicity, numerous long-range NOEs, and slowed amide hydrogen isotope exchange patterns that is a four-stranded antiparallel beta-sheet with nonsymmetrical and specific association of CM I and CM II. BetaCore 'f' conformations undergo reversible, global, moderately cooperative, non-two-state thermal transitions to an equilibrium ensemble of unfolded 'u' conformations. There is a significant energy barrier between 'f' and 'u' conformations. This is the first designed four-stranded antiparallel beta-sheet that folds in water.

Supramolecular anion recognition in water: synthesis of hydrogen-bonded supramolecular frameworks.

Project description:The interaction of tetratopic amidinium-containing receptors with terephthalate anions leads to porous framework materials assembled through charge-assisted hydrogen bonds. The frameworks form in good yield within minutes in water at room temperature, but no framework material is obtained if other anions (Cl-, Br-, NO3-, SO42- or isophthalate2-) are used in place of terephthalate. Two forms of the framework can be prepared: one with a connected pore network, and a more dense phase with discrete voids. We demonstrate that these are the kinetic and thermodynamic products, respectively. Either framework can be prepared independently and can be converted to the other form in response to stimuli. Furthermore, the frameworks can be controllably disassembled and reassembled in response to acid/base triggers suggesting that this new class of materials may have applications in the selective encapsulation and release of guests.

Recognition of Hydrophilic Cyclic Compounds by a Water-Soluble Cavitand.

Project description:A water-soluble deep cavitand bearing amides on the upper rim and trimethyl ammonium groups on the feet was synthesized. The open-ended cavity is stabilized by the intramolecular hydrogen bonds formed between the adjacent amides, and the introduction of trimethylammonium imparts to the cavitand good solubility in water. The cavitand exhibits high binding affinity and selectivity to hydrophilic molecules in water. With certain guests, such as cyclohexyl alcohols, amines and acids, the recognition involves the synergistic action of hydrogen bonding with hydrophobic effects. The binding phenomena are interpreted in terms of a fixed solvent cage presented by the host to the guest.

Anion Recognition in Water: Recent Advances from a Supramolecular and Macromolecular Perspective.

Project description:The recognition of anions in water remains a key challenge in modern supramolecular chemistry, and is essential if proposed applications in biological, medical, and environmental arenas that typically require aqueous conditions are to be achieved. However, synthetic anion receptors that operate in water have, in general, been the exception rather than the norm to date. Nevertheless, a significant step change towards routinely conducting anion recognition in water has been achieved in the past few years, and this Review highlights these approaches, with particular focus on controlling and using the hydrophobic effect, as well as more exotic interactions such as C-H hydrogen bonding and halogen bonding. We also look beyond the field of small-molecule recognition into the macromolecular domain, covering recent advances in anion recognition based on biomolecules, polymers, and nanoparticles.

Bimacrocyclic Effect in Anion Recognition by a Copper(II) Bicyclam Complex.

Project description:The dicopper(II) complex of the bimacrocyclic ligand α,α'-bis(5,7-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecan-6-yl)-o-xylene, 2, interacts with selected anions in dimethyl sulfoxide solution according to two different modes: (i) halides (Cl-, Br-, and I-) and N3 - coordinate the two metal centers at the same time between the two macrocyclic subunits that face each other and (ii) anionic species that do not fit the bridging coordination mode (e.g., NCO-, SCN-, CH3COO-, NO3 -, and H2PO4 -) interact with copper(II) ions only at the "external" positions or their interaction is too weak to be detected. Occurrence of the bridging interaction is demonstrated by X-ray crystallographic studies performed on the adduct formed by [Cu2(2)]4+ with azide and by electron paramagnetic resonance investigation, as the anion coordination between the two copper(II) centers induces spin-spin coupling. Isothermal titration calorimetry experiments performed on [Cu2(2)]4+ and, for comparison, on [(5,7-dimethyl-6-benzyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane)copper(II)], representing the mononuclear analogue, allowed determination of thermodynamic parameters (log K, ΔH, and TΔS) associated with the considered complex/anion equilibria. Thermodynamic data showed that adducts formed by [Cu2(2)]4+ with halides and azide benefit from an extra stability that can be explained on the basis of the anion advantage of simultaneously binding the two metal centers, i.e., in terms of the bimacrocyclic effect.

Project description:In this paper, we reported the synthesis of water soluble macrocyclic arenes 1 containing anionic carboxylate groups. It was found that host 1 could form a 1 : 1 complex with N-methylquinolinium salts in water. Moreover, the complexation and decomplexation of the complexes between host and the guests could be achieved by changing the pH of the solution, and the process could also be observed by naked eye.
