Beliefs About Transitional Events: The Effect of Experience and Life-Script Consistency.

ABSTRACT: The present study examined the beliefs about two types of important life transitions: transitions that are consistent with the cultural life script (e.g., getting married) and transitions that diverge from it (e.g., relocating). Data were collected from two conditions: individuals in the experienced condition only responded to transitions they had experienced; individuals in the hypothetical condition provided ratings only for transitions they had not experienced. Participants rated the likelihood and typical age of occurrence, importance, transitional impact, and valence for an individualized set of condition-appropriate events. We found that script-consistent events were considered more normative and positive than script-divergent events. The two types of events, however, differed little in terms of importance or transitional impact. We conclude by arguing that although script-consistent and script-divergent transitions have much in common from a mnemonic perspective, the distinction is still warranted in the context of lifetime planning and evaluation.

Project description:BackgroundTo investigate the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) based on deep learning on the diagnostic performance and consistency of inexperienced cardiovascular radiologists.MethodsWe enrolled 196 patents who had undergone both coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) and invasive coronary angiography (ICA) within 6 months. Four readers with less cardiovascular experience (Reader 1-Reader 4) and two cardiovascular radiologists (level II, Reader 5 and Reader 6) evaluated all images for ≥ 50% coronary artery stenosis, with ICA as the gold standard. Reader 3 and Reader 4 interpreted with AI system assistance, and the other four readers interpreted without the AI system. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV) and accuracy (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC)) of the six readers were calculated at the patient and vessel levels. Additionally, we evaluated the interobserver consistency between Reader 1 and Reader 2, Reader 3 and Reader 4, and Reader 5 and Reader 6.ResultsThe AI system had 94% and 78% sensitivity at the patient and vessel levels, respectively, which were higher than that of Reader 5 and Reader 6. AI-assisted Reader 3 and Reader 4 had higher sensitivity (range + 7.2-+ 16.6% and + 5.9-+ 16.1%, respectively) and NPVs (range + 3.7-+ 13.4% and + 2.7-+ 4.2%, respectively) than Reader 1 and Reader 2 without AI. Good interobserver consistency was found between Reader 3 and Reader 4 in interpreting ≥ 50% stenosis (Kappa value = 0.75 and 0.80 at the patient and vessel levels, respectively). Only Reader 1 and Reader 2 showed poor interobserver consistency (Kappa value = 0.25 and 0.37). Reader 5 and Reader 6 showed moderate agreement (Kappa value = 0.55 and 0.61).ConclusionsOur study showed that using AI could effectively increase the sensitivity of inexperienced readers and significantly improve the consistency of coronary stenosis diagnosis via CCTA. Project description:BackgroundAlthough numerous studies have demonstrated sex differences in the prevalence of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB), there is a clear lack of research examining the similarities and differences between men and women in terms of the relationship between STB, transitional life events, and the coping strategies employed after experiencing such events when they are perceived as stressful.ObjectiveThis study aims to examine the differences between men's and women's experiences of STB, sociodemographic predictors of STB, and how coping responses after experiencing a stressful transitional life event predict STB.MethodsA web-based self-report survey was used to assess the health and well-being of a voluntary community-based sample of men and women aged 16 years and older, living in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States, who were recruited using web-based social media promotion and snowballing.ResultsIn total, 10,765 eligible web-based respondents participated. Compared with men, a significantly greater proportion of women reported STB (P<.001) and endorsed experiencing a transitional life event as stressful (P<.001). However, there were no gender differences in reporting that the transitional life event or events was stressful for those who also reported STB. Significant sociodemographic adjusted risk factors of STB included younger age; identifying as a sexual minority; lower subjective social connectedness; lower subjective intimate bonds; experiencing a stressful transitional life event in the past 12 months; living alone (women only); not being in employment, education, or training (women only); suddenly or unexpectedly losing a job (men only); and experiencing a relationship breakdown (men only). Protective factors included starting a new job, retiring, having a language background other than English, and becoming a parent for the first time (men only). The results relating to coping after experiencing a self-reported stressful transitional life event in the past 12 months found that regardless of sex, respondents who reported STB compared with those who did not were less likely to engage in activities that promote social connections, such as talking about their feelings (P<.001). Coping strategies significantly explained 19.0% of the STB variance for men (F16,1027=14.64; P<.001) and 22.0% for women (F16,1977=36.45; P<.001).ConclusionsThis research highlights multiple risk factors for STB, one of which includes experiencing at least one stressful transitional life event in the past 12 months. When individuals are experiencing such events, support from services and the community alike should consider using sex-specific or targeted strategies, as this research indicates that compared with women, more men do nothing when experiencing stress after a transitional life event and may be waiting until they experience STB to engage with their social networks for support.
