Does social trust stimulate university technology transfer? Evidence from China.

ABSTRACT: This paper examines the effect of social trust on university technology transfer. A large sample of Chinese universities from the 2007-2017 period was used. We find that social trust facilitates university technology transfer. The finding remain valid after a series of robustness. The mechanism test shows that social trust facilitates university technology transfer by improving the level of university-industry cooperative innovation. Our study suggests that social trust is an important factor that affects university technology transfer.

Does high-speed rail stimulate university technology transfer? evidence from China.

Project description:Prior studies ignore the impact of infrastructure on university technology transfer. High-speed rail, China's most significant infrastructure, has played an essential role in the economy and society. Using high-speed railway construction as a quasi-experiment and a large sample of Chinese universities for the 2007-2017 period, we investigate the impact of high-speed rail on university technology transfer. We provide extensive evidence that high-speed rail has a positive effect on university technology transfer. The finding remains valid after a battery of robustness tests. Mechanism tests find that high-speed rail can improve university technology transfer by promoting the interaction between universities and enterprises and improving enterprises' technology demand for universities. Further analysis shows that better intellectual property protection strengthens the effect of high-speed rail on university technology transfer, and the relationship between high-speed rail and university technology transfer is more prominent in the regions with underdevelopment technology trading markets. Our study suggests that high-speed rail is an important variable that affects university technology transfer.

The impact of digital technology on entrepreneurship--Evidence from China General Social Survey.

Project description:In light of the rapid development of digital technology, it is imperative to study the impact of digital technology on the labour force's entrepreneurial choices with the utmost urgency. This paper first constructs a theoretical mechanism for how digital technology affects individual entrepreneurship. It then empirically examines data from the China General Social Survey (CGSS) to test the theory. The results show that digital technology significantly increases individual entrepreneurial choices. Furthermore, the conclusions of the study are robust even when the estimation method and variable measurement are changed. Finally, the study finds that digital technology has the greatest impact on entrepreneurship among individuals with low education, the second-largest impact on those with medium education, and the third-largest impact on those with high education. Individuals with higher education levels have the second largest impact on the entrepreneurship of individuals with higher education levels, while the smallest impact is observed in this group. Digital technology development has a stronger role in promoting entrepreneurship of individuals with urban household registration than those with rural household registration. In terms of sub-region, digital technology has a larger role in individual entrepreneurship in the eastern and central regions, and has a less significant role in the western region. The findings of this study suggest that there is a need to implement measures to accelerate the pace of digital technology development, enhance the training of entrepreneurial skills and attitudes among highly educated individuals, and direct efforts towards enhancing digital technology development in rural and western China.

Financialization, religion, and social trust in rural China.

Project description:This paper examines the impact of financial development and religion on social trust in rural China. We use multinomial logistic regression models with the Chinese Household Income Project (CHIP) Survey Data of 2013. The findings show that while financial development has a negative and significant impact on particular trust but no impact on general trust, religion has a positive relationship with general trust but insignificant relationship with particular trust. This study further investigates the impact of interaction between financial development and religion on social trust. The joint effect of financial development and religion has significant and positive relationship with particular trust. This implies that while financialization destroys the traditional relatives and friends trust based on lending and borrowing in rural area, religiosity lessens the negative impact of financialization on particular trust.

Micro-foundations of dynamic capabilities to facilitate university technology transfer.

Project description:Within the university-industry ecosystem, improvement and innovation of technology transfer involve implementing appropriate dynamic capabilities. To answer the question-What are the micro-foundations of dynamic capabilities in university technology transfer?-this study investigates in-depth organizational-level dynamic capabilities in transferring university-based knowledge to business and society. Two qualitative case studies were deployed at organizational entities at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam: the Industry Alliance Office, and the Demonstrator Lab. These two organizations stimulate science- and business-oriented university technology transfer. In this context, the micro-foundations of the dynamic capabilities "sensing", "seizing" and "reconfiguring" are identified and discussed. For "sensing", which is the university's ability to explore the opportunities in the ecosystem, the micro-foundations are "selecting internal competency" and "sensing external partners". For "seizing", which supports universities in managing complementarity with industry and society, micro-foundations include "resource co-allocation" and "collaborative business model". The micro-foundations of "reconfiguring", through which universities maintain evolutionary fitness in the innovation ecosystem, are "strategic renewal", "establishing a university technology transfer-friendly environment", and "asset orchestration". This study provides researchers with a better understanding of how dynamic capabilities facilitate university technology transfer. Industrial practitioners and policymakers can consider the suggestions of the present study when pursuing collaboration with universities.

Social implications of Covid-19: Its impact on general trust, political trust, and trust in physicians in China.

Project description:Motivated by current debates over the relationship between epidemic and trust, this paper estimates the short-term effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on general trust, political trust, and trust in physicians in China. Using an individual-level national longitude dataset, results from the Difference-in-Difference estimation show that greater exposure to Covid-19 risks significantly decreased general and political trust among the Chinese population, except for the younger generation (age 8-22). Higher exposure to Covid-19 in malleable ages of trust formation (age 8-22) may worsen individuals' general trust but improve their trust in local officials and physicians. Results from heterogeneity tests reveal that Covid-19 exacerbated general trust among the vulnerable groups, whereas their political trust was stable.

Ethnic diversity, poverty and social trust in Germany: Evidence from a behavioral measure of trust.

Project description:Several scholars have concluded that ethnic diversity has negative consequences for social trust. However, recent research has called into question whether ethnic diversity per se has detrimental effects, or whether lower levels of trust in diverse communities simply reflect a higher concentration of less trusting groups, such as poor people, minorities, or immigrants. Drawing upon a nationally representative sample of the German population (GSOEP), we make two contributions to this debate. First, we examine how ethnic diversity at the neighborhood level-specifically the proportion of immigrants in the neighborhood-is linked to social trust focusing on the compositional effect of poverty. Second, in contrast to the majority of current research on ethnic diversity, we use a behavioral measure of trust in combination with fine-grained (zip-code level) contextual measures of ethnic composition and poverty. Furthermore, we are also able to compare the behavioral measure to a standard attitudinal trust question. We find that household poverty partially accounts for lower levels of trust, and that after controlling for income, German and non-German respondents are equally trusting. However, being surrounded by neighbors with immigrant background is also associated with lower levels of social trust.

How to promote university technology transfer? A configuration analysis based on technology, organization and environment framework.

Project description:University technology transfer (UTT) is at the forefront of innovation, representing the key to promoting the deep integration of science and technology with the economy. In order to explore mechanisms of realizing UTT, this study uses the fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (Fs-QCA) method to determine how the conditional configurations of technology, organization and environment (TOE) promote UTT. Evidently, there are four conditional configurations for promoting UTT, which are characterized by technology-organization-environment synergy, an organization-environment-orientation and a technology-organization-orientation. Technology transfer talents, organization construction, organization incentives, and market demand have an important influence on UTT. The main contribution of this study is its analysis of the nonlinear relationship between TOE conditions and UTT, which helps realize UTT in several ways.

Social entrepreneurial intention among university students in China.

Project description:The issues of employment, social inequality, and resource scarcity can be effectively addressed through social entrepreneurship, contributing to the growing research interest on the formation of social entrepreneurial intention. Using the theory of planned behaviour, the current study examined the influence of selected key factors on social entrepreneurial intention among university students. Based on the cross-sectional quantitative research design, online survey was conducted, which involved 684 students and graduates from five universities in Southern China. The obtained results demonstrated the significant and positive influence of perceived values on sustainability, opportunity recognition competency, attitude towards entrepreneurship, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control on social entrepreneurial intention. Additionally, attitude towards entrepreneurship partially mediated the relationships of risk-taking propensity, self-efficacy, and need for achievement on social entrepreneurial intention. The multi-group analysis results also showed that need for achievement and social entrepreneurial intention differed significantly between genders, which provides new ideas for future investigations into the impact of gender on social entrepreneurial intentions. Based on the findings of this study, it is crucial that university students are exposed to relevant courses or training to develop social entrepreneurship competencies and promote sustainable values. The findings of this study will provide policymakers with relevant policy guidelines and more effective theoretical support to achieve the goal of promoting social entrepreneurship among university students in a more resource-efficient and effective manner.

University teachers' technology integration in teaching English as a foreign language: evidence from a case study in mainland China.

Project description:Despite the increasing use of technology in education, university teachers' perceptions and use of technology are under-explored, particularly in the context of English language classrooms in mainland China. To fill the research gap, this article reports the findings of a case study exploring university teachers' perceptions of and practices with technology as well as the challenges of technology implementation. To provide a microscopic understanding of these issues from teachers' perspective, an online survey was first distributed to all 60 English teachers at a focal university, with 35 valid surveys returned. Subsequently, nine survey respondents participated in in-depth follow-up interviews. The findings suggest that teachers used technology predominantly for teacher-centred purposes rather than for active student engagement although they had positive perceptions of technology integration. They also held critical viewpoints on the use of technology in English teaching. In addition, teachers perceived more external barriers to technology integration (e.g. insufficient technical and pedagogical training, "the Great Firewall") than internal challenges (e.g. students' lack of interest in technology). The study contributes to the understanding of university teachers' technology uptake and carries important implications for the promotion of teaching innovation and effectiveness in higher education contexts.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s43545-021-00223-5.
