Association of Healthy Diet with Recovery Time from COVID-19: Results from a Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study.

ABSTRACT: The world is still in need of an effective therapy to treat coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). This cross-sectional study was conducted on COVID-19 survivors in Saudi Arabia to investigate the influence of a healthy diet on the recovery time from COVID-19. A questionnaire was developed to assess participants' dietary habits, based on the 2015 Dutch food-based dietary guidelines. A total of 738 COVID-19 survivors participated in the study, of whom 237 (32.1%) were hospitalized for COVID-19 treatment while 501 (76.9%) were not hospitalized, and 320 (43.4%) were females and 418 (56.6%) were males. Overall, no significant difference was noted in healthy diet score between males and females; however, this score was significantly lower for Saudis compared to non-Saudis. Among the non-hospitalized patients, eating a more healthy diet was associated with a shorter duration of recovery (p < 0.05) and was significantly affected by gender (15.8 ± 9.3 male vs. 12.1 ± 8.9 female; p < 0.001) and marital status (12.1 ± 8.4 singles vs. 13.7 ± 9.3 married vs. 16.1 ± 11.8 divorced; p < 0.05). In contrast, no significant correlation was found with age or BMI. In this study, a more healthy diet was associated with a shorter duration of recovery from COVID-19. However, further studies are needed to thoroughly investigate the relationship between diet and recovery time from COVID-19.

Project description:BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic, declared in March 2020, profoundly affected global health, societal, and economic frameworks. Vaccination became a crucial tactic in combating the virus. Simultaneously, the pandemic likely underscored the internet's role as a vital resource for seeking health information. The proliferation of misinformation on social media was observed, potentially influencing vaccination decisions and timing.ObjectiveThis study aimed to explore the relationship between COVID-19 vaccination rates, including the timing of vaccination, and reliance on internet-based information sources in Japan.MethodsUsing a cross-sectional study design using a subset of panel data, this nationwide survey was conducted in 7 waves. A total of 10,000 participants were randomly selected through an internet survey firm, narrowing down to 8724 after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. The primary outcome was the COVID-19 vaccination date, divided into vaccinated versus unvaccinated and early versus late vaccination groups. The main exposure variable was the use of internet-based information sources. Control variables included gender, family structure, education level, employment status, household income, eligibility for priority COVID-19 vaccination due to pre-existing medical conditions, and a health literacy scale score. Two regression analyses using generalized estimating equations accounted for prefecture-specific correlations, focusing on vaccination status and timing. In addition, chi-square tests assessed the relationship between each information source and vaccination rates.ResultsRepresenting a cross-section of the Japanese population, the regression analysis found a significant association between internet information seeking and higher vaccination rates (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.42 for those younger than 65 years; aOR 1.66 for those aged 65 years and older). However, no significant link was found regarding vaccination timing. Chi-square tests showed positive associations with vaccination for television, government web pages, and web news, whereas blogs and some social networking sites were negatively correlated.ConclusionsInternet-based information seeking is positively linked to COVID-19 vaccination rates in Japan, underscoring the significant influence of online information on public health decisions. Nonetheless, certain online information sources, including blogs and some social networks, negatively affected vaccination rates, warranting caution in their use and recognition. The study highlights the critical role of credible online sources in public health communication and the challenge of combating misinformation on less regulated platforms. This research sheds light on how the digital information landscape influences health behaviors, stressing the importance of accurate and trustworthy health information amidst global health emergencies.

Project description:BackgroundSustainable nutrition is based on foods with a low environmental impact, accessible and affordable, ensuring protection of the biodiversity, while including the cultural elements of each geographical region. The present cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate adherence to a sustainable diet and the perceived environmental benefit of adopting a sustainable diet among adults in Greece.MethodsThe Sustainable HEalthy Diet (SHED) questionnaire evaluated sustainable nutrition practices and awareness in a sample of 607 adult Greeks recruited through social media.ResultsA positive association was revealed between healthy eating, a plant-based diet and organic awareness. Healthy eating was related to the consumption of low-salt and low-sugar products, avoiding added salt and ultra-processed foods (UPFs), as well as limiting sweets and soft drinks. Most participants (94.6%) were flexitarians, consuming meat instead of plant-based foods, although showing a preference for legumes over meat products. Most (86.8%) failed to meet the 5-a-day recommendations for fruit and vegetables, which were bought mainly from supermarket chains, with men resolving to electronic commerce purchases, while women preferring small, local grocery shops. Most responders consumed tap water (54.9%) and homemade meals daily (75.0%). Many participants (32.8%) reported separating and recycling food scraps at home, using neighborhood composters. When organic produce was selected, this involved mainly fruits and vegetables. Between men and women, the latter adopted a plant-based diet to a greater extent, consumed fewer soft drinks, were keener to consume local produce, limit meat intake and eat crops that are pesticide- and herbicide-free. Overall, Greek consumers show preference to local products. Most of them fail to compost and cut down on meat intake. The tool's internal consistency measured by Cronbach alpha was 0.702 and 0.736 for the healthy eating and sustainable eating domains respectively, 0.798 for the environmental domain, while the other domains had lower scores due to contradictory questions. Our Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) demonstrated a good fit (CFI = 0.896, TLI = 0.87) with strong positive relationships between healthy eating, a plant-based diet and organic awareness.ConclusionsThe results indicate that adult Greeks more easily implement some aspects of sustainable nutrition (organic, local foods), while others appear more difficult (compost, reduce meat intake). Nonetheless, the results can be useful in designing interventions to increase dietary sustainability awareness among Greeks, including educational programs and improved infrastructures.

Project description:BackgroundSevere Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 continues to spread globally and in the absence of an effective treatment, the vaccine remains the best hope for controlling this disease. In this study, we seek to find out the extent to which people in Syria accept the Corona vaccine and what are the factors that affect their decision.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted in Syria during the period from January 3 to March 17, 2021. A structured self-administered questionnaire was distributed in two phases: The first phase included distributing the questionnaire as a Google Form on social media platforms. In the second phase, a paper version of the questionnaire was handed to patients, their companions, and workers in public hospitals. SPSS v.25 and R v.4.1.1 were used to analyze the data. Pearson Chi-square test and Logistic Regression were used to study the associations between categorical groups.ResultsOf 7531 respondents, 3505 (46.5%) were males and 4026 (53.5%) were females. 3124 (41.5%) were 18-24 years old. Healthcare workers were participants' main sources of information (50.9%), followed by Social Media users (46.3%). 2790 (37%) of the participant are willing to be vaccinated, and 2334 (31%) were uncertain about it. Fear of possible side effects was the main reason for the reluctance to take the vaccine 1615 (62.4%), followed by mistrust of the vaccine formula 1522 (58.8%). 2218 (29.5%) participants think COVID-19 poses a major risk to them personally. Vaccination intention was significantly associated with gender, residence, financial status, educational level, and geographic origin.ConclusionThis study showed very negatively important results. The study participants Vaccination acceptance rate is almost the lowest when compared to its peers. A Lot of efforts should be made to correct misinformation about the vaccine and answer all questions about it, especially with a health system that has been ravaged by war for 10 years.
