Project description:The term "lovebirds" is often used to describe the loving behaviors and interactions between two romantic partners, but what specific processes distinguish these flourishing lovebird relationships from other committed but "numbed" relationships? The present study aimed to address this knowledge gap through the development and preliminary validation of the Lovebird Scale. The Lovebird Scale describes the thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and habits that constitute and maintain relationship flourishing, which in turn could promote aspects of individual flourishing such as positive affect. We conducted three studies using data collected from 996 English-speaking U.S. adults (64.2% Female, M = 39.2 years old) who reported being in a romantic relationship for at least six months (M = 11.2 years). In Study 1, we conducted an exploratory factor analysis to determine the underlying factor structure. In Study 2, confirmatory factor analyses revealed a three-factor model nested within a higher-order factor representing lovebird relationships. In Study 3, we cross-validated the higher-order structure, examined the construct validity of the scale, and explored associations between the Lovebird Scale and affective state. Finally, we discuss how the Lovebird Scale contributes to the growing field of positive relationship science as well as conceptual and clinical implications of the scale.

Project description:BackgroundSelf-regulation refers to a person's ability to manage their cognitive, emotional, and behavioral processes to achieve long-term goals. Most prior research has examined self-regulation at the individual level; however, individual-level assessments do not allow the examination of dynamic patterns of intraindividual variability in self-regulation and thus cannot aid in understanding potential malleable processes of self-regulation that may occur in response to the daily environment.ObjectiveThis study aims to develop a brief, psychometrically sound momentary self-regulation scale that can be practically administered through participants' mobile devices at a momentary level.MethodsThis study was conducted in 2 phases. In the first phase, in a sample of 522 adults collected as part of a larger self-regulation project, we examined 23 previously validated assessments of self-regulation containing 594 items in total to evaluate the underlying structure of self-regulation via exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. We then selected 20 trait-level items to be carried forward to the second phase. In the second phase, we converted each item into a momentary question and piloted the momentary items in a sample of 53 adults over 14 days. Using the results from the momentary pilot study, we explored the psychometric properties of the items and assessed their underlying structure. We then proposed a set of subscale and total score calculations.ResultsIn the first phase, the selected individual-level items appeared to measure 4 factors of self-regulation. The factors identified were perseverance, sensation seeking, emotion regulation, and mindfulness. In the second phase of the ecological momentary assessment pilot, the selected items demonstrated strong construct validity as well as predictive validity for health risk behaviors.ConclusionsOur findings provide preliminary evidence for a 12-item momentary self-regulation scale comprising 4 subscales designed to capture self-regulatory dynamics at the momentary level.

Project description:BACKGROUND: Anticoagulation can reduce quality of life, and different models of anticoagulation management might have different impacts on satisfaction with this component of medical care. Yet, to our knowledge, there are no scales measuring quality of life and satisfaction with anticoagulation that can be generalized across different models of anticoagulation management. We describe the development and preliminary validation of such an instrument - the Duke Anticoagulation Satisfaction Scale (DASS). METHODS: The DASS is a 25-item scale addressing the (a) negative impacts of anticoagulation (limitations, hassles and burdens); and (b) positive impacts of anticoagulation (confidence, reassurance, satisfaction). Each item has 7 possible responses. The DASS was administered to 262 patients currently receiving oral anticoagulation. Scales measuring generic quality of life, satisfaction with medical care, and tendency to provide socially desirable responses were also administered. Statistical analysis included assessment of item variability, internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha), scale structure (factor analysis), and correlations between the DASS and demographic variables, clinical characteristics, and scores on the above scales. A follow-up study of 105 additional patients assessed test-retest reliability. RESULTS: 220 subjects answered all items. Ceiling and floor effects were modest, and 25 of the 27 proposed items grouped into 2 factors (positive impacts, negative impacts, this latter factor being potentially subdivided into limitations versus hassles and burdens). Each factor had a high degree of internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.78-0.91). The limitations and hassles factors consistently correlated with the SF-36 scales measuring generic quality of life, while the positive psychological impact scale correlated with age and time on anticoagulation. The intra-class correlation coefficient for test-retest reliability was 0.80. CONCLUSIONS: The DASS has demonstrated reasonable psychometric properties to date. Further validation is ongoing. To the degree that dissatisfaction with anticoagulation leads to decreased adherence, poorer INR control, and poor clinical outcomes, the DASS has the potential to help identify reasons for dissatisfaction (and positive satisfaction), and thus help to develop interventions to break this cycle. As an instrument designed to be applicable across multiple models of anticoagulation management, the DASS could be crucial in the scientific comparison between those models of care.

Project description:Background and objectivesPatient adherence to treatment is an important barrier to the implementation of evidence-based psychological treatments (EBPTs). There is a need for simple and deployable measures of patient adherence to treatment for use across EBPTs. The Treatment Adherence Rating Scale (TARS) was developed and validated in two samples.MethodsThis study includes two samples: adults with Major Depressive Disorder who received Cognitive Therapy for depression (Sample 1; N = 48, mean age = 44.27 years), and at-risk adolescents who received either the Transdiagnostic Sleep and Circadian Intervention or Psychoeducation (Sample 2; N = 176, mean age = 14.77 years). Factor structure of the TARS scores was examined via Exploratory Factor Analyses (EFA) in Sample 1 and Confirmatory Factor Analyses (CFA) in Sample 2. Internal consistency, predictive validity, and construct validity of the TARS scores were examined.ResultsResults from EFA in Sample 1 supported a one-factor model. Results from CFA in Sample 2 suggested that a two-factor model (i.e., agreement and compliance) fit better than a one-factor model. TARS scores from both samples demonstrated adequate predictive validity with primary clinical outcomes and construct validity with treatment expectations.LimitationsThe sample was small with two specific populations. Future research should focus on other patient populations, a larger population, and other EBPTs. Future research examining patient ratings of these items are needed for further validation of the TARS.ConclusionsPreliminary findings support the use of a two-factor model and highlight the potential utility of a simple measure of patient adherence to treatment across age and diagnostic groups.

Project description:Learning from mistakes plays an important role in employee development; however, such a learning scale has not yet been developed. The objective of this study was to develop and examine the psychometric properties of the Learning from Mistakes Climate Scale (LMCS) in Malaysia. A pool of items was first developed based on the literature, with an expert panel then convened to select items that met the definition of learning from mistake climate in the workplace, specifically in Malaysia. The experts agreed on 23 items to be rated. In total, 554 working adults with a mean age of 32.28 were then recruited for this study. The LMCS was administered at baseline and 10-14 days later as a retest: 468 participants took part in the retest study, a dropout rate of 15.52%. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the LMCS is a 17-item one-factor model. Validity, in its various forms, was supported, namely convergent validity, criterion validity, and predictive validity. Analysis also showed significant reliability, that is, test-retest reliability and in all intra-class correlations. The LMCS was found to be a valid and reliable instrument to assess the learning from mistake climate in Malaysia. This is the first scale in the organizational learning climate literature to integrate the mistake tolerance aspect. This instrument can assist in creating a psychologically safe work environment that helps to facilitate learning, especially in a highly hierarchical, collectivistic culture that is high in power distance.

Project description:Expectancy theory has been widely applied in substance use research but has received less attention in eating behavior research. Measuring food expectancies, or the anticipated outcomes of eating specific foods, holds theoretical and practical promise for investigations into nonhomeostatic eating behavior. The current study developed and assessed the psychometric properties of a novel measure of positively and negatively valenced highly (e.g., sweets, salty snacks, fast foods, sugary drinks) and minimally (e.g., fruits, vegetables) processed food expectancies. The Anticipated Effects of Food Scale (AEFS) was adapted from a self-report of alcohol expectancies, piloted for item generation/retention and readability, and preliminarily validated in an adult sample (N = 247; Mage = 36.84; 53.3% male; 74.5% White). Consistent with the substance expectancies literature, AEFS positive highly processed food expectancies were associated with greater added sugars intake, r = .17, p = .009, and food addiction symptoms, r = .56, p < .001. Of note, AEFS negative minimally processed food expectancies were robustly associated with food addiction symptoms, r = .81, p < .001, and, together with AEFS positive highly processed food expectancies, explained 67% of the variance in food addiction symptoms. Furthermore, AEFS food expectancies demonstrated incremental validity with food addiction symptoms above and beyond general eating expectancies. The AEFS seems to be a psychometrically sound measure and can be used to investigate cognitive-affective mechanisms implicated in highly processed food intake and food addiction. Moreover, the present results provide new insight into potential food expectancy challenge intervention approaches for preventing nonhomeostatic eating behavior. Project description:BackgroundMilitary nurses are expected to be competent in providing quality nursing care in their assigned departments and meeting the medical needs of the military during deployment. Competency assessment is a key step in the development of a robust and competent nursing team. This study was aimed to develop the Professional Competency Scale for Military Nurses (PCSMN) and test its psychometric properties.MethodsAn instrument development and validation study were conducted. Military nurses in military hospitals in eastern, southern, western, and northern China were recruited in this study. The study procedure comprised three main steps: item development (extensive literature review, the Delphi survey, and a pilot test), scale development (item analysis and exploratory factor analysis), and scale validation (confirmatory factor analysis and reliability test).ResultsThe 65-item PCSMN comprised four dimensions: clinical nursing knowledge and skills, military nursing knowledge and skills, professional ability, and comprehensive quality. The reliability and validity of the PCSMN were satisfactory, with the above four factors accounting for 66.9% of the total variance.ConclusionThe PCSMN is a good instrument for evaluating the competencies of military nurses in military hospitals. This may provide guidance for competency-based training.

Project description:IntroductionLearning agility is key in the selection and development of future leaders. However, prior research has failed to clearly conceptualize learning agility and to empirically clarify its dimensions.MethodWe developed the Leadership Learning Agility Scale (LLAS) by using a combination of both deductive and inductive approaches and established scale development and validation procedures. We administered the LLAS among three independent samples of workers and leaders (N = 907; N = 196; N = 219).ResultsOur results indicate that our 18-item LLAS measures the willingness to learn from social experiences, and the drive to apply those lessons in new and challenging leadership roles, and comprises a Developing Leadership, Seeking Feedback, and Developing Systematically dimension. Furthermore, the LLAS showed adequate internal consistency. Leadership learning agility was positively related to achievement motivation, extraversion, and conscientiousness but unrelated to openness to experience.DiscussionWe provided a new scale to measure leadership learning agility that can be applied in both research and practitioner settings.

Project description:Health behaviors influence health and well-being, improve quality of life, and provide economic benefits. It is important to take advantage of health-related opportunities during adolescence. Staying healthy during adolescence also promotes the future well-being of individuals and that of the next generation. We aimed to develop a reliable and valid scale based on the General Senior High School Physical Education and Health Curriculum Standards (2017 edition) to evaluate Chinese late adolescents' health behavior. The scale was to help physical education teachers measure the health behavior level of senior high school students, improve physical education and health teaching, and promote Chinese adolescent health. Participants were recruited by convenience sampling from September to October 2019. For the first survey, we recruited 526 senior high school students (318 boys, 208 girls; Mage = 16.5), and the data were subjected to item analysis and exploratory factor analysis. For the second survey, we recruited 542 senior high school students (249 boys, 293 girls; Mage = 15.5), and the data were subjected to confirmatory factor analysis and internal consistency reliability analysis. After exploratory factor analysis, we extracted four factors with 23 items: exercise awareness and habits (five items), mastering and applying healthy behavior knowledge (10 items), emotional regulation (four items), and environment adaptation (four items). The Cronbach's alpha values for these factors ranged from 0.863 to 0.937. After confirmatory factor analysis, we achieved a satisfactory goodness-of-fit model (CMIN/DF = 2.92, RMR = 0.03, GFI = 0.93, CFI = 0.91, TLI = 0.92, RMSEA = 0.06). Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and construct validity were all satisfactory. These results suggest that the Chinese version of the Health Behavior Scale is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing the health behavior of senior high school students. The findings have important implications for increasing adolescents' health literacy, promoting adolescents' health, and enhancing the well-being of late adolescents.
