Generation of Gait Events with a FSR Based Cane Handle.

ABSTRACT: Gait analysis has many applications, and specifically can improve the control of prosthesis, exoskeletons, or Functional Electrical Stimulation systems. The use of canes is common to complement the assistance in these cases, and the synergy between upper and lower limbs can be exploited to obtain information about the gait. This is interesting especially in the case of unilateral assistance, for instance in the case of one side lower limb exoskeletons. If the cane is instrumented, it can hold sensors that otherwise should be attached to the body of the impaired user. This can ease the use of the assistive system in daily life as well as its acceptance. Moreover, Force Sensing Resistors (FSRs) are common in gait phase detection systems, and force sensors are also common in user intention detection. Therefore, a cane that incorporates FSRs on the handle can take advantage from the direct interface with the human and provide valuable information to implement real-time control. This is done in this paper, and the results confirm that many events are detected from variables derived from the readings of the FSRs that provide rich information about gait. However, a large inter-subject variability points to the need of tailored control systems.

Project description:Changing gait is crucial for adaptive and smooth animal locomotion. Although it remains unclear what makes animals decide on a specific gait, energy efficiency is an important factor. It has been reported that the relationship of oxygen consumption with speed is U-shaped for each horse gait and that different gaits have different speeds at which oxygen consumption is minimized. This allows the horse to produce energy-efficient locomotion in a wide speed range by changing gait. However, the underlying mechanisms causing oxygen consumption to be U-shaped and the speeds for the minimum consumption to be different between different gaits are unclear. In the present study, we used a neuromusculoskeletal model of the rat to examine the mechanism from a dynamic viewpoint. Specifically, we constructed the musculoskeletal part of the model based on empirical anatomical data on rats and the motor control model based on the physiological concepts of the spinal central pattern generator and muscle synergy. We also incorporated the posture and speed regulation models at the levels of the brainstem and cerebellum. Our model achieved walking through forward dynamic simulation, and the simulated joint kinematics and muscle activities were compared with animal data. Our model also achieved trotting by changing only the phase difference of the muscle-synergy-based motor commands between the forelimb and hindlimb. Furthermore, the speed of each gait varied by changing only the extension phase duration and amplitude of the muscle synergy-based motor commands and the reference values for the regulation models. The relationship between cost of transport (CoT) and speed was U-shaped for both the generated walking and trotting, and the speeds for the minimum CoT were different for the two gaits, as observed in the oxygen consumption of horses. We found that the resonance property and the posture and speed regulations contributed to the CoT shape and difference in speeds for the minimum CoT. We further discussed the energy efficiency of gait based on the simulation results.

Project description:BackgroundCombining machine learning (ML) with gait analysis is widely applicable for diagnosing abnormal gait patterns.ObjectiveTo analyze gait adaptability characteristics in stroke patients, develop ML models to identify individuals with GAD, and select optimal diagnostic models and key classification features.MethodsThis study was investigated with 30 stroke patients (mean age 42.69 years, 60% male) and 50 healthy adults (mean age 41.34 years, 58% male). Gait adaptability was assessed using a CMill treadmill on gait adaptation tasks: target stepping, slalom walking, obstacle avoidance, and speed adaptation. The preliminary analysis of variables in both groups was conducted using t-tests and Pearson correlation. Features were extracted from demographics, gait kinematics, and gait adaptability datasets. ML models based on Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, Multi-layer Perceptron, K-Nearest Neighbors, and AdaCost algorithm were trained to classify individuals with and without GAD. Model performance was evaluated using accuracy (ACC), sensitivity (SEN), F1-score and the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC).ResultsThe stroke group showed a significantly decreased gait speed (p = 0.000) and step length (SL) (p = 0.000), while the asymmetry of SL (p = 0.000) and ST (p = 0.000) was higher compared to the healthy group. The gait adaptation tasks significantly decreased in slalom walking (p = 0.000), obstacle avoidance (p = 0.000), and speed adaptation (p = 0.000). Gait speed (p = 0.000) and obstacle avoidance (p = 0.000) were significantly correlated with global F-A score in stroke patients. The AdaCost demonstrated better classification performance with an ACC of 0.85, SEN of 0.80, F1-score of 0.77, and ROC-AUC of 0.75. Obstacle avoidance and gait speed were identified as critical features in this model.ConclusionStroke patients walk slower with shorter SL and more asymmetry of SL and ST. Their gait adaptability was decreased, particularly in obstacle avoidance and speed adaptation. The faster gait speed and better obstacle avoidance were correlated with better functional mobility. The AdaCost identifies individuals with GAD and facilitates clinical decision-making. This advances the future development of user-friendly interfaces and computer-aided diagnosis systems.
