Examining the role of ovarian hormones in the association between worry and working memory across the menstrual cycle.

ABSTRACT: Previous research indicates that worry is associated with poorer working memory performance. Moreover, prior work demonstrates that estradiol relates to both worry and working memory performance. In the present study, we sought to further examine interrelations between worry, estradiol and working memory by testing whether estradiol moderates the association between worry and working memory in females. We hypothesized that worry would be associated with poorer working memory performance at higher levels of estradiol. We also conducted exploratory analyses to examine the role of progesterone as a moderator of the association between worry and working memory. Participants were 97 naturally-cycling females who attended four lab sessions across their menstrual cycles. Consistent with predictio
