Coding-Complete Genome Sequences of Six Influenza Type A Strains Circulating in Lithuania in the 2009-2010 Epidemic Season.

ABSTRACT: Here, we report the coding-complete genome sequences of six influenza A(H1N1) strains that were detected in Vilnius, Lithuania, among patients exhibiting influenza-like symptoms during the 2009-2010 epidemic season, within national influenza surveillance. Several mutations were found in genes encoding hemagglutinin and neuraminidase, in comparison with the A/California/07/2009 reference strain (GenBank accession numbers NC_026433 and NC_026434).

Delayed norovirus epidemic in the 2009-2010 season in Japan: potential relationship with intensive hand sanitizer use for pandemic influenza.

Project description:Norovirus (NoV) epidemics normally peak in December in Japan; however, the peak in the 2009-2010 season was delayed until the fourth week of January 2010. We suspected intensive hand hygiene that was conducted for a previous pandemic influenza in 2009 as the cause of this delay. We analysed the NoV epidemic trend, based on national surveillance data, and its associations with monthly output data for hand hygiene products, including alcohol-based skin antiseptics and hand soap. The delayed peak in the NoV incidence in the 2009-2010 season had the lowest number of recorded cases of the five seasons studied (2006-2007 to 2010-2011). GII.4 was the most commonly occurring genotype. The monthly relative risk of NoV and monthly output of both alcohol-based skin antiseptics and hand soap were significantly and negatively correlated. Our findings suggest an association between hand hygiene using these products and prevention of NoV transmission.

Project description:Seventy-three B/Victoria group strains isolated in the 1996-1997 influenza season were divided into three groups according to the degree of reactivity to monoclonal antibody 8E6. Analysis of nucleotide sequences of the HA1 region clarified that single amino acid substitutions were responsible for the difference in reactivity to 8E6.

Recurrence of Japanese encephalitis epidemic in Wuhan, China, 2009-2010.

Project description:BackgroundJapanese encephalitis (JE) was once epidemic in most areas of China, including Wuhan, a city located in the central part of China. The incidence of JE dramatically decreased due to nationwide immunization with the live attenuated JE virus (JEV) vaccine, and no JE cases were reported during 2005-2008 in Wuhan. In 2009 and 2010, 31 JE cases reoccurred in this area. In this study, we investigated the causes of JE recurrence.Methods and findingsAll JE cases were laboratory-confirmed by detecting the JEV-specific IgM antibody with an IgM-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). All patients were children between 2 months and 9 years of age with a median age of 2 years. Of the 31 cases, 9 had received one or two doses of the JEV vaccine, 11 had not been immunized previously with the JEV vaccine, and 11 had an unclear immunization history. Through reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis, two new strains of JEV were isolated from Culex tritaeniorhynchus and identified as genotype 1 JEV, rather than genotype 3, which circulated in this area previously.ConclusionsVaccine failure or missed vaccination may have caused JE recurrence. Local centers for disease control and prevention need to improve immunization coverage, and the efficacy of the JE vaccine needs to be reevaluated in a population at risk for disease.

Full-Genome Sequences of Influenza H3N2 Virus Strains Isolated from Finnish Patients during the 2012-2013 Epidemic Season.

Project description:Here, we sequenced 10 influenza A(H3N2) virus genomes isolated from Finnish patients diagnosed with flu-like illness during the 2012-2013 influenza season. The alignment showed a high number of amino acid substitutions (238 in total) in only 10 samples, proving that a high mutation rate exists in seasonal influenza A viruses.

Project description:Here, we report 40 complete genome sequences of influenza A/H1N1 strains isolated from 33 nonhospitalized and 7 hospitalized patients during the 2013-2014 epidemic season in Finland. An analysis of the aligned sequences revealed no oseltamivir-resistant genotypes. As a whole, the recent viruses have drifted from the prototype A/California/7/2009 virus by ca. 1.3%.
