Cargo Transportation and Methylene Blue Degradation by Using Fuel-Powered Micromotors.

ABSTRACT: In the past two decades, micromotors have experienced rapid development, especially in environmental remediation, the biomedical field, and in cargo delivery. In this study micromotors have been synthesized from a variety of materials. Different functional layers and catalytic layers are formed through template electrodeposition (the bottom-up method). At the same time, the article analyzes the influence of hydrogen peroxide concentration, surfactant type and concentration on the speed of the micromotors. Cargo transportation through tubular micromotors has always been a problem that people are eager to solve. In this article, we electrodeposit a layer of Ni in the microtubes, which effectively guides the microtubular motors to complete the cargo transportation. The potential applications of micromotors are also being explored. We added the prepared micromotors to the methylene blue solution to effectively enhance the degradation.

Enhanced ultrasonic degradation of methylene blue using a catalyst-free dual-frequency treatment.

Project description:Methylene blue is one of the most common pollutants found in wastewater, primarily due to its widespread use in the dye industry. Consequently, it is imperative to explore environmentally friendly and efficient methods for degrading this pollutant into non-toxic byproducts. While ultrasonic degradation methods in combination with additives or catalysts have proven effective, such additives or catalysts may inadvertently contribute to secondary pollution. Moreover, the preparation of these catalysts imposes an additional burden in terms of effort and cost. To address these issues, this paper introduces a catalyst-free dual-frequency ultrasound degradation approach for methylene blue. The sonochemical quality of the cavitation bubbles is improved using this technique because the bulk solution is populated with two types of bubbles, whose mean sizes are determined by the dual ultrasound frequencies. The findings demonstrate that, under identical acoustic power density conditions, dual-frequency ultrasound consistently outperforms single-frequency modes across all investigated parameters. Furthermore, the larger the difference between the dual frequencies used, the more effective the degradation of methylene blue. Finally, after just 20 min of sonication, a degradation efficiency of 91% was achieved with dual frequencies of 20 and 80 kHz at an acoustic power density of 209.63 ± 6.94 W/L. Consequently, this technique offers an environmentally friendly, catalyst-free, and highly effective method for degrading methylene blue.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue using a novel counter-rotating disc reactor.

Project description:Introduction: This research introduces an innovative photocatalytic reactor designed to address challenges in wastewater treatment, with a focus on enhancing dye degradation and reducing Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). Methods: The reactor is designed with counter-rotational movements of discs to enhance hydrodynamics and mass transfer, along with a 3D-printed, interchangeable component system to boost efficacy. TiO2 nanoparticles, composed of 80% anatase and 20% rutile, are thermally immobilized on glass discs. The effectiveness of various treatment variables was assessed through a Central Composite Design (CCD), guided by a Response Surface Methodology (RSM) model. Results: The RSM analysis reveals that the linear, quadratic, and interactive effects of the counter-rotational movements significantly influence the efficiency of dye and COD removal. The RSM model yields coefficients of determination (R2) values of 0.9758 and 0.9765 for the predictive models of dye and COD removal, respectively. Optimized parameters for dye removal include a pH of 6.05, disc rotation speed of 22.35 rpm, initial dye concentration of 3.15 × 10-5 M, residence time of 7.98 h, and the number of nanoparticle layers set at 3.99, resulting in 96.63% dye removal and 65.81% COD removal under optimal conditions. Discussion: Notably, the reactor demonstrates potential for efficient treatment within a near-neutral pH range, which could reduce costs and resource use by eliminating the need for pH adjustments. The implementation of discs rotating in opposite directions marks a significant advancement in the process of dye removal.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye using eco-friendly synthesized rGO@ZnO nanocomposites.

Project description:Industrial chemical pollutants such as methylene blue (MB) dye are released into the water body and potentially cause harm to the human and aquatic biosphere. Therefore, this study aims to synthesize eco-friendly nanocatalysts, i.e., reduced graphene oxide (rGO), zinc oxide (ZnO), and reduced graphene oxide-zinc oxide (rGO@ZnO) nanocomposites, for efficient photocatalytic degradation of MB dye. A graphite rod was obtained from waste dry cell batteries for the electrochemical exfoliation synthesis of graphene oxide (GO) and rGO. For the eco-friendly synthesis of ZnO and rGO@ZnO nanocatalysts, Croton macrostachyus leaf extract was used as a reducing and capping agent. The synthesized nanocatalysts were characterized using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray. The eco-friendly synthesized rGO, ZnO, and rGO@ZnO nanocatalysts were applied for the photocatalytic degradation of MB dye using direct sunlight irradiation. At optimum parameters, photocatalytic degradation of MB dye efficiency reached up to 66%, 96.5%, and 99.0%, respectively. Furthermore, kinetics of the photodegradation reaction based on rGO, ZnO, and rGO@ZnO nanocatalysts follow pseudo-first-order with a rate constant of 2.16 × 10-3 min-1, 4.97 × 10-3 min-1, and 5.03 × 10-3 min-1, respectively. Lastly, this study promotes a low catalyst load (20 mg) for the efficient photodegradation of MB dye.

Spontaneous degradation of methylene blue adsorbed on magnetic biochars.

Project description:Methylene blue (MB) is one of the most widely studied organic molecules in the treatment of wastewater. Sorption, biodegradation, photodegradation, electrochemical oxidation, ozonation, and other advanced oxidative processes are frequently used to remove this dye from water solutions. The unexpected degradation of MB adsorbed on magnetic biochar from aqueous solution was observed. We found that the conditions of handling, such as drying temperature and storage period, substantially influenced the stability of the dye fixed on the (magnetic) carbon adsorbents. Twelve substances were identified by mass spectrometry as products of decomposition, mostly demethylated, oxidated, and hydroxylated substances. The decomposition of MB was further investigated using non-magnetic carbon biochars and aluminosilicate mineral zeolite. Our findings of the spontaneous decomposition of MB and the identification of the species of degradation offer a new approach to evaluate the mechanism of adsorption, the process of regeneration, and the toxicity of treated solutions.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue Using Ti-Doped ZnO Nanoparticles Synthesized by Rapid Combustion.

Project description:ZnO and Ti-doped ZnO (Ti-ZnO) nanoparticles were synthesized using rapid combustion. The morphology of ZnO and Ti-ZnO featured nanoparticles within cluster-like structures. The ZnO and Ti-ZnO structures exhibited similar hexagonal wurtzite structures and crystal sizes. This behavior occurred because Zn2+ sites of the ZnO lattice were substituted by Ti4+ ions. The chemical structure characterization implied the major vibration of the ZnO structure. The physisorption analysis showed similar mesoporous and non-rigid aggregation structures for ZnO and Ti-ZnO using N2 adsorption-desorption. However, Ti-ZnO demonstrated a specific surface area two times higher than that of ZnO. This was a major factor in improving the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB). The photocatalytic degradation analysis showed a kinetic degradation rate constant of 2.54 × 10-3 min-1 for Ti-ZnO, which was almost 80% higher than that of ZnO (1.40 × 10-3 min-1). The transformation mechanism of MB molecules into other products, including carbon dioxide, aldehyde, and sulfate ions, was also examined.

Coupling Adsorption-Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue and Maxilon Red.

Project description:The MB and MR removal process by two mechanisms of adsorption using rice straw (absence of UV light) and photodegradation on TiO2 surfaces was investigated. MB and MR removal efficiency were further intensified upon the sequential operation of adsorption followed by photocatalytic degradation over TiO2 under visible light irradiation. The TiO2 was used to remove methylene blue (MB) and Maxilon Red (MR) dye from aqueous media by continuous mode at 25 ± 2 °C, at pH 6.8 ± 0.2. Photo-illumination study revealed 75.81 and 65.51% MB and MR removal with the dose of 1 g/L TiO2 with an initial concentration of 5 mg/L within 120 min. This study can be deemed of potential applications for the removal of MB and MR dyes on an industrial level using the synergistic adsorption-photocatalytic oxidation approach. A probable photodegradation mechanism was proposed.

Light controlled 3D micromotors powered by bacteria.

Project description:Self-propelled bacteria can be integrated into synthetic micromachines and act as biological propellers. So far, proposed designs suffer from low reproducibility, large noise levels or lack of tunability. Here we demonstrate that fast, reliable and tunable bio-hybrid micromotors can be obtained by the self-assembly of synthetic structures with genetically engineered biological propellers. The synthetic components consist of 3D interconnected structures having a rotating unit that can capture individual bacteria into an array of microchambers so that cells contribute maximally to the applied torque. Bacterial cells are smooth swimmers expressing a light-driven proton pump that allows to optically control their swimming speed. Using a spatial light modulator, we can address individual motors with tunable light intensities allowing the dynamic control of their rotational speeds. Applying a real-time feedback control loop, we can also command a set of micromotors to rotate in unison with a prescribed angular speed.

Green Organo-Photooxidative Method for the Degradation of Methylene Blue Dye.

Project description:This study used an organophoto-oxidative material to degrade the toxic azo dye, methylene blue (MB), due to its hazardous effects on aquatic life and humans. MB is traditionally degraded using metal-based catalysts, resulting in high costs. Several organic acids were screened for organo-photooxidative applications against various azo dyes, and ascorbic acid (AA), also known as vitamin C, was found to be best for degradation due to its high photooxidative activity. It is an eco-friendly, edible, and efficient photooxidative material. A photocatalytic box has been developed for the study of organo-photooxidative activity. It was found that when AA was added, degradation efficiency increased from 42 to 95% within 240 min. Different characterization techniques, such as HPLC and GC-MS, were used after degradation for the structural elucidation of degraded products. DFT study was done for the investigation of the mechanistic study behind the degradation process. A statistical tool, RSM, was used for the optimization of parameters (concentration of dye, catalyst, and time). This study develops sustainable and effective solutions for wastewater treatment.

Effective photocatalytic degradation and physical adsorption of methylene blue using cellulose/GO/TiO<sub>2</sub> hydrogels.

Project description:Environmentally friendly cellulose/GO/TiO2 hydrogel photocatalyst has been successfully fabricated via a green, simple, and one-step method and evaluated as the photocatalyst and adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB). The XRD and FTIR analysis suggested the strong interaction among cellulose, GO and TiO2, resulting from the formation of hydrogen bonds. Due to the unique porous structure of cellulose hydrogel and introduction of GO, the cellulose/GO/TiO2 hydrogel showed superior (degradation ratio ∼ 93%) and reproducible (no significant change during the ten consecutive cycles) performance in the removal of MB under UV light. Consequently, the prepared cellulose/GO/TiO2 hydrogel can be applied as an eco-friendly, high-performance, reproducible, and stable photocatalyst and adsorbent for the removal of MB. This green hydrogel is a promising candidate for dye wastewater treatment. Moreover, this work is expected to extend the scope of bio-templated synthesis of other nanomaterials for various applications.
