The tremendous increase in industrial development and urbanization has become a severe threat to the Chinese climate and food security. The Agricultural Production System Simulator model was used to simulate soil nitrogen in black soil in Yangling Jilin Province for 20 years. The observed values are consistent with the simulated values. Project description:Throughout the world, nitrogen (N) losses from intensive agricultural production may end up as undesirably high concentrations of nitrate in groundwater with a long-term impact on groundwater quality. This has human and environmental health consequences, due to the use of groundwater as a drinking water resource, and causes eutrophication of groundwater-dependent ecosystems such as wetlands, rivers and near-coastal areas. At national scale, the measured nitrate concentrations and trends in Danish oxic groundwater in the last 70 years correlate well with the annual agricultural N surpluses. We also show that the N use efficiency of agriculture is related to the groundwater nitrate concentrations. We demonstrate an inverted U-shape of annual nitrate concentrations as a function of economic growth from 1948 to 2014. Our analyses evidence a clear trend of a reversal at the beginning of the 1980s towards a more sustainable agricultural N management. This appears to be primarily driven by societal demand for groundwater protection linked to economic prosperity and an increased environmental awareness. However, the environmental and human health thresholds are still exceeded in many locations. Groundwater protection is of fundamental global importance, and this calls for further development of environmentally and economically sustainable N management in agriculture worldwide.

Project description:Performance of the APSIM (Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator) wheat model was assessed to simulate winter wheat phenology, biomass, grain yield, and nitrogen (N) uptake for its potential to optimize fertilizer applications for optimal crop growth and minimal environmental degradation. The calibration and evaluation dataset had 144 and 72 different field growing conditions (location (~7) × year (~5) × sowing date (2) × N treatment (7-13)), respectively, and included seven cultivars. APSIM simulated phenological stages satisfactorily with both model calibration and evaluation data sets with r2 of 0.97 and RMSE of 3.98-4.15 BBCH (BASF, Bayer, Ciba-Geigy, and Hoechst) scale. Simulations for biomass accumulation and N uptake during early growth stages (BBCH 28-49) were also reasonable with r2 of 0.65 and RMSE of 1510 kg ha-1, and r2 of 0.64-0.66 and RMSE of 28-39 kg N ha-1, respectively, with a higher accuracy during booting (BBCH 45-47). Overestimation of N uptake during stem elongation (BBCH 32-39) was attributed to (1) high inter-annual variability in simulations, and (2) high sensitivity of parameters regulating N uptake from soil. Calibration accuracy of grain yield and grain N was higher than that of biomass and N uptake at the early growth stages. APSIM wheat model showed high potential for optimizing fertilizer management in winter wheat cultivation in Northern Europe.

Project description:Re-using faecal sludge (FS) to generate value has the potential to contribute towards solving the issue of long term sanitation solutions in growing urban areas across sub-Saharan Africa; however, hitherto, no design tools have been available that are capable of simulating a system involving economic factors, complex social issues and environmental circumstances. We hypothesized that Agent-Based Modelling (ABM), when deployed with appropriate rigour, can provide such a tool. Extensive field work was carried out in a Malawian city, investigating the adoption of Skyloo above-ground composting toilets by households, and the operation of the municipal FS site. 65 semi-structured interviews and 148 household interviews, together with observations, were carried out to characterize these processes, with the data acquired being used to construct two separate ABMs. The Skyloo ABM was run for various scenarios of start-up capital for business and payback of loans against the toilet cost to households. The municipal FS Site ABM was run for different patterns of dumping fee and enforcement structure. The field work demonstrated that there is potential for further expansion of FS reuse, with a market for agricultural application. The Skyloo ABM identified the significance of start-up capital for a business installing the toilet technology; the municipal FS Site ABM showed that existing fees, fines and regulatory structure were insufficient to reduce illegal dumping of FS to any useful degree, but that a monthly permit system would provide enhanced revenue to the city council compared with per-visit charging of disposal companies at the municipal FS site. Whilst each ABM ideally requires some additional data before full application, we have, for the first time, shown that ABM provides a basis for the simulation-based design of FS management systems, including complex social, economic and environmental factors.

Project description:In pursuit of maximum grain yield farmers in the North China Plain usually apply excessive N fertilizer, resulting in wasted resources and environmental pollution. To assess the economic and environmental performances of different nitrogen rates will be conductive to sustain cleaner crop production. An 8-year field experiment was carried out with four treatments, N0 (0 kg ha-1 for winter wheat and summer maize), N1 (168 kg ha-1 for winter wheat and 129 kg ha-1 for summer maize), N2 (240 kg ha-1 for winter wheat and 185 kg ha-1 for summer maize) and N3 (300 kg ha-1 for winter wheat and summer maize), on the double cropping at Dawenkou research field (36°11'N, 117°06'E), Shandong Province, China. The crop production, soil physical-chemical parameters, and greenhouse gas emission are measured and the economic and environmental performances are assessed. The optimal nitrogen rate obtained the highest grain yield of summer maize in 4 of 8 year and was equivalent to conventional N rate in the other years. The nitrogen partial factor productivity and agronomic efficiency of optimal nitrogen rate was 63% and 58% higher than that of conventional nitrogen rate. The optimal nitrogen rate effectively decreased soil bulk density and increased weight percentage of water-stable aggregate and activities of urease and invertase compared to conventional nitrogen rate, which improved soil productivity. The fertilizer nitrogen loss and global warming potential of optimal nitrogen rate reduced by 76% and 35% compared to conventional nitrogen rate. The annual greenhouse gas intensity of optimal nitrogen rate decreased by 14-35% compared to others. The net ecosystem economic budget under optimal nitrogen rate is 252-604 $ ha-1 yr.-1 higher than other addition levels. The optimal nitrogen rate produces more grains and obtains higher economic and environmental benefits.

Project description:Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is a family of metalloenzymes that has the potential to sequestrate carbon dioxide (CO2) from the environment and reduce pollution. The goal of this study is to apply protein engineering to develop a modified CA enzyme that has both higher stability and activity and hence could be used for industrial purposes. In the current study, we have developed an in silico method to understand the molecular basis behind the stability of CA. We have performed comparative molecular dynamics simulation of two homologous α-CA, one of thermophilic origin (Sulfurihydrogenibium sp.) and its mesophilic counterpart (Neisseria gonorrhoeae), for 100 ns each at 300, 350, 400, and 500 K. Comparing the trajectories of two proteins using different stability-determining factors, we have designed a highly thermostable version of mesophilic α-CA by introducing three mutations (S44R, S139E, and K168R). The designed mutant α-CA maintains conformational stability at high temperatures. This study shows the potential to develop industrially stable variants of enzymes while maintaining high activity.

Project description:IntroductionIn low-middle income countries, urbanization leads to changes from traditional to Western diet, which are often accompanied by reductions in cardiometabolic health. Whether socioeconomic status buffers these urbanization-related diet changes over time is unknown.ObjectiveTo examine whether the association between urbanization and a key indicator of Western diet, percent of calories from animal-source foods (1) varies depending on income and (2) whether this association changes over time.Materials and methodsWe used data from nine waves of the longitudinal, population-based China Health and Nutrition Survey [n = 22,360 Chinese adults (1991-2015)], followed across 24 years, including diet data from 3 repeated 24-h dietary recalls. We used simultaneous year-stratified linear regression models to examine whether changes in the association between urbanization level and percent of calories from animal-source foods differed by income. Models allowed for variation in associations across the 24 years of urbanization, accounting for within-individual correlation over time and controlling for age, sex, region, physical activity, and caloric intake.ResultsIn 1991, on average 15% of calories for Chinese adults came from animal source foods and by 2015, this percentage rose to approximately one quarter of total calories. Over the 24 years of follow-up, urbanization and income were each strongly related to percent of calories from animal-source foods with differential association across income levels (p < 0.0001). We also found evidence that this association changed over time (p < 0.0001). Income gradients in animal source food consumption were smallest in the most urban areas in early years with some temporal variation, but over time income gradients narrowed in some later years in low and moderately urbanized areas. However, by 2015 there were few income differences in animal source food consumption across urbanization levels.ConclusionsThroughout 24-years of urbanization, income seemed to buffer the transition from traditional to Western diet. However, the degree to which income buffered these urbanization-related changes depended on the level and history of community urbanization. At later stages of urbanization when Western diet behaviors were more widespread, urban-rural differences in Western diet behaviors varied little by income.

Project description:BackgroundTelemedicine services are promoting more access to healthcare. Portugal was an early adopter of telemedicine to overcome both its geological barriers and the shortage of healthcare professionals. The Pediatric Cardiology Service (PCS) at Coimbra University Hospital Centre (CHUC) has been using telemedicine to increase access and coverage since 1998. Their Pediatric Telecardiology Service has been daily connecting CHUC with 13 other Portuguese national hospitals, and regularly connecting with Portuguese-speaking African countries, through a teleconsultation platform.MethodsThis study aims at exploring the Pediatric Telecardiology Service's evolution, through a comprehensive assessment of the PCS's development, evolution and impact in public health, to better understand the critical factors for implementation and sustainability of telemedicine, in the context of healthcare services digitalization. A case study was performed, with cost-benefit, critical factors and organizational culture assessment. Finally, the Kingdon's framework helped to understand the implementation and scale-up process and the role of policy-making.ResultsWith the total of 32,685 out-patient teleconsultations, growing steadily from 1998 to 2016, the Pediatric Telecardiology Service has reached national and international recognition, being a pioneer and an active promotor of telemedicine. This telemedicine service has saved significant resources, about 1.1 million euros for the health system (e.g. in administrative and logistic costs) and approximately 419 euros per patient (considering an average of 1777 patients per year). PCS presents a dominant "Clan" culture. The Momentum's critical factors for telemedicine service implementation enabled us to understand how barriers were overcome (e.g. political forces). Willingness, perseverance and teamwork, allied with partnership with key stakeholders, were the foundation for professionals' engagement and service networking development. Its positive results, new regulations and the increasing support from the hospital board, set up a window of opportunity to establish a sustainable telemedicine service.ConclusionThe Pediatric Telecardiology Service enables real-time communication and the sharing of clinical information, overcoming many barriers (from geographical ones to shortage of healthcare professionals), improving access to specialized care both in Portugal and Africa. Motivation and teamwork, and perseverance, were key for the Pediatric Telecardiology Service to tackle the window of opportunity which created conditions for sustainability.

Project description:Current best medical treatment for patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) involves a medical professional who applies state-of-the-art knowledge of diagnostics and treatment- as derived from cohort studies and clinical trials- to the healthcare process of individual patients. Thus, the much-needed personalization of medicine depends on the abilities, experience and intuition of medical professionals to adjust group-based knowledge to individual decision making. Within 20 years from now, such personal clinical decisions will be largely supported by digital means, also defining a new ecosystem of healthcare often referred to as "digital medicine". We expect that the next phase of digitalization will include new "digital health pathways": data-driven personalized decision support that is based on a combination of multimodal data sources, including evidence-based medical knowledge (e.g., clinical guidelines), personal disease profiles (including genetic determinants of disease progression and treatment response), insights into individual disease trajectories (thereby defining subgroups of patients) and individual patients' needs. Here, we illustrate the potential of this development by sketching the contours of a digitally supported care pathway for gait disability and falls. Such digital health pathways will support the introduction of personalized medicine for PD patients, allowing patients to benefit optimally from individually tailored treatments. This should result in a better quality of life for patients and lower costs for society.

Project description:ObjectiveTo assess the extent to which Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) has been adopted and scaled up in countries.SettingThe 95 countries that participated in the survey are home to 82% of the global under-five population and account for 95% of the 5.9 million deaths that occurred among children less than 5 years of age in 2015; 93 of them are low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs).MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional self-administered survey. Questionnaires and data analysis focused on (1) giving a general overview of current organisation and financing of IMCI at country level, (2) describing implementation of IMCI's three original components and (3) reporting on innovations, barriers and opportunities for expanding access to care for children. A single data file was created using all information collected. Analysis was performed using STATA V.11.ParticipantsIn-country teams consisting of representatives of the ministry of health and country offices of WHO and Unicef.ResultsEighty-one per cent of countries reported that IMCI implementation encompassed all three components. Almost half (46%; 44 countries) reported implementation in 90% or more districts as well as all three components in place (full implementation). These full-implementer countries were 3.6 (95% CI 1.5 to 8.9) times more likely to achieve Millennium Development Goal 4 than other (not full implementer) countries. Despite these high reported implementation rates, the strategy is not reaching the children who need it most, as implementation is lowest in high mortality countries (39%; 7/18).ConclusionThis survey provides a unique opportunity to better understand how implementation of IMCI has evolved in the 20 years since its inception. Results can be used to assist in formulating strategies, policies and activities to support improvements in the health and survival of children and to help achieve the health-related, post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals.

Project description:BackgroundThe red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852), is one of the most promising freshwater species for aquaculture in China. Understanding its reproductive pattern and population dynamics is crucial for sustainable management, but there is currently a lack of fundamental knowledge of commercial P. clarkii populations. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the reproductive pattern and population dynamics of commercial P. clarkii throughout the yearly cycle.MethodsA total of 2,051 crayfish (1,012 females and 1,039 males) were collected from March 2016 to February 2017 in the area of Selection and Reproduction Center of Crayfish. The reproductive pattern was evaluated by the gonadosomatic index (GSI), hepatosomatic index (HSI), ovarian development and fecundity. Growth, mortality rates and exploitation rate were estimated by electronic length frequency analysis by R package "TropFishR" based on data of cephalothorax length (CTL).ResultsOur results demonstrated that spawning activities of P. clarkii took place from September to November, with a mean fecundity of 429 ± 9 eggs per female. There were two recruitments yearly, a major one from October to November and a minor one from March to May. With respect to population growth, five growth cohorts were identified for both females and males. Crayfish grew faster but attained smaller asymptotic maximum CTL as indicated by higher growth coefficient (K), growth parameter index (Ø') and lower asymptotic CTL (Linf ). The estimates of total mortality rate (Z), natural mortality rate (M) and fishing mortality rate (F) were 1.93, 1.02, 0.91 year-1 for females and 2.32, 0.93, 1.39 year-1 for males, which showed that the mortality of male crayfish was mainly caused by fishing. The estimates of exploitation rate (E) indicated that male crayfish were overexploited, with the values of 0.47 and 0.60 year-1 for females and males, respectively.DiscussionP. clarkii spawned from September to November while two recruitments were observed yearly. We inferred that some eggs, prevented from hatching by low water temperature in winter, were more likely to hatch in the next spring. Moreover, the fishing mortality rate was relatively high for males, which might be related to the males-directed selection during the reproductive period. The higher values of exploitation rate in our study confirmed that males P. clarkii were overexploited and were under high fishing pressure. We thus suggest reducing fishing intensity on immature crayfish and avoid sex selection during the reproductive period to improve the overall sustainability of commercial P. clarkii populations.
