A motivational framework of acculturation.

ABSTRACT: A key distinction in motivational processes is between motivations and the means for pursuing motivations. Despite being a motivated process, existing models of acculturation do not make this distinction, neither empirically nor theoretically. A motivational framework that is informed by theories of goal constructs to understand the process of acculturation is proposed. This model is tested in two distinct samples comprising immigrants from the former Soviet Union to Israel (N = 239) as well as immigrants from Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh to Britain (N = 236). Results revealed that the motivation to preserve one's heritage culture and the motivation to adopt one's host culture were each uniquely associated with the respective means for doing so. Furthermore, outcomes in acculturation were determined by the match between acculturation motivations and acculturation means. These findings demonstrate the theoretical and practical implications of analyzing the process of acculturation using a motivational framework.

Project description:BackgroundThe role of acculturation in dietary behaviors among Hispanics/Latinos in the United States remains unclear. Discrepancies may be explained by variations in acculturation constructs or ethnicity-specific dynamics.ObjectiveWe aimed to compare relations between 3 different acculturation constructs with dietary quality and patterns among Puerto Ricans in the mainland United States.MethodsWe analyzed cross-sectional data with 1194-1380 Puerto Ricans, aged 45-75 y. Acculturation was measured with the use of a language-based scale (0-100; higher score denotes more English use), a psychological-based scale (0-50; higher score denotes stronger US orientation), and years living in the mainland United States. Diet quality scores (higher scores denote healthier diet) were defined with the use of the Alternate Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI) and the Mediterranean Diet Score (MeDS). Three dietary patterns were previously derived with the use of principal components analysis. Adjusted multivariable regression models tested the association of each acculturation construct with diet quality score or pattern. Interaction terms were included for income or education status.ResultsPsychological-based acculturation, but not the other constructs, was positively associated with AHEI (β ± SE: 0.013 ± 0.004; P = 0.002) and MeDS (0.009 ± 0.005; P = 0.041). Income, but not education, moderated this association (P = 0.03), with higher diet quality observed with higher income (>$25,000) and stronger US orientation. All constructs were inversely associated with a traditional dietary pattern, with the language-based scale being stronger (z score β ± SE: -0.160 ± 0.032; P < 0.0001) than the psychological-based scale (-0.097 ± 0.028; P = 0.001) or years living in the mainland United States (-0.058 ± 0.028; P = 0.041). No associations were observed for the Western or sweets/desserts patterns.ConclusionsIn Puerto Rican adults, stronger psychological US orientation was associated with higher diet quality, particularly with higher income. More Spanish use, stronger psychological Puerto Rican orientation, and shorter length of mainland-US residency were associated with traditional dietary patterns. Appropriate diet-related acculturation constructs should be carefully considered among Hispanics/Latinos. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT01231958.

Project description:ObjectiveTo evaluate the relationship between acculturation and adverse pregnancy outcomes, and whether these relationships differ across racial or ethnic groups.MethodsThis is a planned secondary analysis of the nuMoM2b study (Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-to-Be), a prospective observational cohort study of 10,038 pregnant women at eight academic health care centers in the United States. Nulliparous pregnant women with singleton gestations were recruited between 6 0/7 and 13 6/7 weeks of gestation from October 2010-September 2013. Acculturation was defined by birthplace (United States vs non-United States), language used during study visits (English or Spanish), and self-rated English proficiency. The adverse pregnancy outcomes of interest were preterm birth (less than 37 weeks of gestation, both iatrogenic and spontaneous), preeclampsia or eclampsia, gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, stillbirth, small for gestational age, and large for gestational age. Multivariable regression modeling was performed, as was an interaction analysis focusing on the relationship between acculturation and adverse pregnancy outcomes by maternal race or ethnicity.ResultsOf the 10,006 women eligible for this analysis, 8,100 (80.9%) were classified as more acculturated (eg, born in the United States with high English proficiency), and 1,906 (19.1%) were classified as having less acculturation (eg, born or not born in the United States with low proficiency in English or use of Spanish as the preferred language during study visits). In multivariable logistic regression modeling, more acculturation was significantly associated with higher frequency of preterm birth (odds ratio [OR] 1.46, adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.50, 95% CI 1.16-1.95); spontaneous preterm birth (OR 1.54, aOR 1.62, 95% CI 1.14-2.24); preeclampsia or eclampsia (OR 1.39, aOR 1.31, 95% CI 1.03-1.67); preeclampsia without severe features (OR 1.44, aOR 1.43, 95% CI 1.03-2.01); and gestational hypertension (OR 1.68, aOR 1.48, 95% CI 1.22-1.79). These associations did not differ by self-described race or ethnicity.ConclusionIn a large cohort of nulliparous women, more acculturation, regardless of self-described race or ethnicity, was associated with increased odds of several adverse pregnancy outcomes.Clinical trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01322529.
