Floquet prethermalization and Rabi oscillations in optically excited Hubbard clusters.

ABSTRACT: We study the properties of Floquet prethermal states in two-dimensional Mott-insulating Hubbard clusters under continuous optical excitation. With exact-diagonalization simulations, we show that Floquet prethermal states emerge not only off resonance, but also for resonant excitation, provided a small field amplitude. In the resonant case, the long-lived quasi-stationary Floquet states are characterized by Rabi oscillations of observables such as double occupation and kinetic energy. At stronger fields, thermalization to infinite temperature is observed. We provide explanations to these results by means of time-dependent perturbation theory. The main findings are substantiated by a finite-size analysis.

Spin-orbit Rabi oscillations in optically synthesized magnetic fields.

Project description:Rabi oscillation has been proven to be one of the cornerstones of quantum mechanics, triggering substantial investigations in different disciplines and various important applications both in the classical and quantum regimes. So far, two independent classes of wave states in the Rabi oscillations have been revealed as spin waves and orbital waves, while a Rabi wave state simultaneously merging the spin and orbital angular momentum has remained elusive. Here we report on the experimental and theoretical observation and control of spin-orbit-coupled Rabi oscillations in the higher-order regime of light. We constitute a pseudo spin-1/2 formalism and optically synthesize a magnetization vector through light-crystal interaction. We observe simultaneous oscillations of these ingredients in weak and strong coupling regimes, which are effectively controlled by a beam-dependent synthetic magnetic field. We introduce an electrically tunable platform, allowing fine control of transition between different oscillatory modes, resulting in an emission of orbital-angular-momentum beams with tunable topological structures. Our results constitute a general framework to explore spin-orbit couplings in the higher-order regime, offering routes to manipulating the spin and orbital angular momentum in three and four dimensions. The close analogy with the Pauli equation in quantum mechanics, nonlinear optics, etc., implies that the demonstrated concept can be readily generalized to different disciplines.

Polaritonic Rabi and Josephson Oscillations.

Project description:The dynamics of coupled condensates is a wide-encompassing problem with relevance to superconductors, BECs in traps, superfluids, etc. Here, we provide a unified picture of this fundamental problem that includes i) detuning of the free energies, ii) different self-interaction strengths and iii) finite lifetime of the modes. At such, this is particularly relevant for the dynamics of polaritons, both for their internal dynamics between their light and matter constituents, as well as for the more conventional dynamics of two spatially separated condensates. Polaritons are short-lived, interact only through their material fraction and are easily detuned. At such, they bring several variations to their atomic counterpart. We show that the combination of these parameters results in important twists to the phenomenology of the Josephson effect, such as the behaviour of the relative phase (running or oscillating) or the occurence of self-trapping. We undertake a comprehensive stability analysis of the fixed points on a normalized Bloch sphere, that allows us to provide a generalized criterion to identify the Rabi and Josephson regimes in presence of detuning and decay.

Viewing Majorana Bound States by Rabi Oscillations.

Project description:We propose to use Rabi oscillation as a probe to view the fractional Josepshon relation (FJR) associated with Majorana bound states (MBSs) expected in one-dimensional topological superconductors. The system consists of a quantum dot (QD) and an rf-SQUID with MBSs at the Josephson junction. Rabi oscillations between energy levels formed by MBSs are induced by ac gate voltage controlling the coupling between QD and MBS when the photon energy proportional to the ac frequency matches gap between quantum levels formed by MBSs and QD. As a manifestation of the Rabi oscillation in the whole system involving MBSs, the electron occupation on QD oscillates with time, which can be measured by charge sensing techniques. With Floquet theorem and numerical analysis we reveal that from the resonant driving frequency for coherent Rabi oscillation one can directly map out the FJR cos(πΦ/Φ0) as a signature of MBSs, with Φ the magnetic flux through SQUID and Φ0 = hc/2e the flux quantum. The present scheme is expected to provide a clear evidence for MBSs under intensive searching.

Ensemble-averaged Rabi oscillations in a ferromagnetic CoFeB film.

Project description:Rabi oscillations describe the process whereby electromagnetic radiation interacts coherently with spin states in a non-equilibrium interaction. To date, Rabi oscillations have not been studied in one of the most common spin ensembles in nature: spins in ferromagnets. Here, using a combination of femtosecond laser pulses and microwave excitations, we report the classical analogue of Rabi oscillations in ensemble-averaged spins of a ferromagnet. The microwave stimuli are shown to extend the coherence-time resulting in resonant spin amplification. The results we present in a dense magnetic system are qualitatively similar to those reported previously in semiconductors which have five orders of magnitude fewer spins and which require resonant optical excitations to spin-polarize the ensemble. Our study is a step towards connecting concepts used in quantum processing with spin-transport effects in ferromagnets. For example, coherent control may become possible without the complications of driving an electromagnetic field but rather by using spin-polarized currents.

Exact Excited-State Functionals of the Asymmetric Hubbard Dimer.

Project description:The exact functionals associated with the (singlet) ground state and the two singlet excited states of the asymmetric Hubbard dimer at half-filling are calculated using both Levy's constrained search and Lieb's convex formulation. While the ground-state functional is, as is commonly known, a convex function with respect to the density, the functional associated with the doubly excited state is found to be concave. Also, because the density-potential mapping associated with the first excited state is noninvertible, its "functional" is a partial, multivalued function composed of one concave and one convex branch that correspond to two separate domains of the external potential. Remarkably, it is found that, although the one-to-one mapping between density and external potential may not apply (as in the case of the first excited state), each state-specific energy and corresponding universal functional are "functions" whose derivatives are each other's inverse, just as in the ground state formalism.

Phonon-driven intra-exciton Rabi oscillations in CsPbBr<sub>3</sub> halide perovskites.

Project description:Coupling electromagnetic radiation with matter, e.g., by resonant light fields in external optical cavities, is highly promising for tailoring the optoelectronic properties of functional materials on the nanoscale. Here, we demonstrate that even internal fields induced by coherent lattice motions can be used to control the transient excitonic optical response in CsPbBr3 halide perovskite crystals. Upon resonant photoexcitation, two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy reveals an excitonic peak structure oscillating persistently with a 100-fs period for up to ~2 ps which does not match the frequency of any phonon modes of the crystals. Only at later times, beyond 2 ps, two low-frequency phonons of the lead-bromide lattice dominate the dynamics. We rationalize these findings by an unusual exciton-phonon coupling inducing off-resonant 100-fs Rabi oscillations between 1s and 2p excitons driven by the low-frequency phonons. As such, prevailing models for the electron-phonon coupling in halide perovskites are insufficient to explain these results. We propose the coupling of characteristic low-frequency phonon fields to intra-excitonic transitions in halide perovskites as the key to control the anharmonic response of these materials in order to establish new routes for enhancing their optoelectronic properties.

Inverted valley polarization in optically excited transition metal dichalcogenides.

Project description:Large spin-orbit coupling in combination with circular dichroism allows access to spin-polarized and valley-polarized states in a controlled way in transition metal dichalcogenides. The promising application in spin-valleytronics devices requires a thorough understanding of intervalley coupling mechanisms, which determine the lifetime of spin and valley polarizations. Here we present a joint theory-experiment study shedding light on the Dexter-like intervalley coupling. We reveal that this mechanism couples A and B excitonic states in different valleys, giving rise to an efficient intervalley transfer of coherent exciton populations. We demonstrate that the valley polarization vanishes and is even inverted for A excitons, when the B exciton is resonantly excited and vice versa. Our theoretical findings are supported by energy-resolved and valley-resolved pump-probe experiments and also provide an explanation for the recently measured up-conversion in photoluminescence. The gained insights might help to develop strategies to overcome the intrinsic limit for spin and valley polarizations.

Heavy-atom effect on optically excited triplet state kinetics.

Project description:In several fields of research, like e.g. photosensitization, photovoltaics, organic electroluminescent devices, dynamic nuclear polarization, or pulsed dipolar electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, triplet state kinetics play an important role. It is therefore desirable to tailor the kinetics of photoexcited triplet states, e.g. by exploiting the intramolecular heavy-atom effect, and to determine the respective kinetic parameters. In this work, we set out to systematically investigate the photoexcited triplet state kinetics of a series of haloanthracenes by time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy in combination with synchronized laser excitation. For this purpose, a procedure to simulate time traces by solving the differential equation system governing the triplet kinetics numerically is developed. This way, spin lattice relaxation rates and zero-field triplet life times are obtained concurrently by a global fit to experimental data measured at three different cryogenic temperatures.

Permanent Rabi oscillations in coupled exciton-photon systems with PT-symmetry.

Project description:We propose a physical mechanism which enables permanent Rabi oscillations in driven-dissipative condensates of exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities subjected to external magnetic fields. The method is based on stimulated scattering of excitons from the incoherent reservoir. We demonstrate that permanent non-decaying oscillations may appear due to the parity-time symmetry of the coupled exciton-photon system realized in a specific regime of pumping to the exciton state and depletion of the reservoir. At non-zero exciton-photon detuning, robust permanent Rabi oscillations occur with unequal amplitudes of exciton and photon components. Our predictions pave way to realization of integrated circuits based on exciton-polariton Rabi oscillators.

Coexisting spin and Rabi oscillations at intermediate time regimes in electron transport through a photon cavity.

Project description:In this work, we theoretically model the time-dependent transport through an asymmetric double quantum dot etched in a two-dimensional wire embedded in a far-infrared (FIR) photon cavity. For the transient and the intermediate time regimes, the current and the average photon number are calculated by solving a Markovian master equation in the dressed-states picture, with the Coulomb interaction also taken into account. We predict that in the presence of a transverse magnetic field the interdot Rabi oscillations appearing in the intermediate and transient regime coexist with slower non-equilibrium fluctuations in the occupation of states for opposite spin orientation. The interdot Rabi oscillation induces charge oscillations across the system and a phase difference between the transient source and drain currents. We point out a difference between the steady-state correlation functions in the Coulomb blocking and the photon-assisted transport regimes.
