Sulphur-Bridged BAl5S5+ with 17 Counting Electrons: A Regular Planar Pentacoordinate Boron System.

ABSTRACT: At present, most of the reported planar pentacoordinate clusters are similar to the isoelectronic substitution of CAl5+, with 18 counting electrons. Meanwhile, the regular planar pentacoordinate boron systems are rarely reported. Hereby, a sulphur-bridged BAl5S5+ system with a five-pointed star configuration and 17 counting electrons is identified at the global energy minimum through the particle-swarm optimization method, based on the previous recognition on bridged sulphur as the peripheral tactics to the stable planar tetracoordinate carbon and boron. Its outstanding stability has been demonstrated by thermodynamic analysis at 900 K, electronic properties and chemical bonding analysis. This study provides adequately theoretical basis and referable data for its experimental capture and testing.

Planar pentacoordinate s-block metals.

Project description:The presence of a delocalized π-bond is often considered an essential criterion for achieving planar hypercoordination. Herein, we show that σ-delocalization could be sufficient to make the planar configuration the most stable isomer in a series of planar pentacoordinate s-block metals. High-level ab initio computations reveal that the global minimum of a series of interalkali and interalkali-alkaline earth clusters (LiNa5, Li5Mg+, Na5Mg+, K5Ca+, CaRb5+, Rb5Sr+, and SrCs5+) adopts a singlet D5h structure with a planar pentacoordinate lithium or alkaline earth metal (AE = Mg, Ca, Sr). These clusters are unusual combinations to stabilize a planar pentacoordinate atom, as all their constituents are electropositive. Despite the absence of π-electrons, Hückel's rule is fulfilled by the six σ-electrons. Furthermore, the systems exhibit a diatropic ring current in response to an external magnetic field and a strong magnetic shielding, so they might be classified as σ-aromatic. Therefore, multicenter σ-bonds and the resulting σ-delocalization stabilize these clusters, even though they lack π-aromaticity.

Theoretical Design of Stable Pentacoordinate Boron Compounds.

Project description:Through theoretical computations, we found that boron can form thermodynamically stable pentacoordinate compounds. Pentacoordinate boron (penta-B) is just hypercoordinate but not hypervalent because it forms only four covalent bonds, of which at least one is a multicenter bond. Being electron deficient, to be pentacoordinate, at least two of its bonding atoms should have low electronegativity. Penta-B can be formed in H k B(CH3) m (XH3) n (X = Si, Ge, Sn, and n ≥ 2) and BR5 (R = BH2NH3, AsH2, and BeH). Based on a systematic investigation of these model compounds, we designed three thermodynamically stable penta-B compounds that can potentially be synthesized by hydrogenating their tricoordinate counterparts under mild reaction conditions.

σ-Aromaticity in planar pentacoordinate aluminium and gallium clusters.

Project description:Planar hypercoordinate structures are gaining immense attention due to the shift from common paradigm. Herein, our high level ab initio calculations predict that planar pentacoordinate aluminium and gallium centres in Cu5Al2+ and Cu5Ga2+ clusters are global minima in their singlet ground states. These clusters are thermodynamically and kinetically very stable. Detailed electronic structure analyses reveal the presence of σ-aromaticity which is the driving force for the stability of the planar form.

Stabilization of beryllium-containing planar pentacoordinate carbon species through attaching hydrogen atoms.

Project description:The diagonal relationship between beryllium and aluminum and the isoelectronic relationship between BeH unit and Al atom were utilized to design nine new planar and quasi-planar pentacoordinate carbon (ppC) species CAl n Be m H x q (n + m = 5, q = 0, ±1, x = q + m - 1) (1a-9a) by attaching H atoms onto the Be atoms in CAl4Be, CAl3Be2 -, CAl2Be3 2-, and CAlBe4 3-. These ppC species are σ and π double aromatic. In comparison with their parents, these H-attached molecules are more stable electronically, as can be reflected by the more favourable alternative negative-positive-negative charge-arranging pattern and the less dispersed peripheral orbitals. Remarkably, seven of these nine molecules are global energy minima, in which four of them are kinetically stable, including CAl3Be2H (2a), CAl2Be3H- (4a), CAl2Be3H2 (5a), and CAlBe4H4 + (9a). They are the promising target for the experimental realization of species with a ppC.

Optical planar waveguide for cell counting.

Project description:Low cost counting of cells has medical applications in screening, military medicine, disaster medicine, and rural healthcare. In this report, we present a shallow, buried, planar waveguide fabricated by potassium ion exchange in glass that enables low-cost and rapid counting of metal-tagged objects that lie in the evanescent field of the waveguide. Laser light transmitted through the waveguide was attenuated proportionately to the presence of metal-coated microstructures fabricated from photoresist. This technology enables the low-cost enumeration of cells from blood, urine, or other biofluids.

Semi-metallic Be5C2 monolayer global minimum with quasi-planar pentacoordinate carbons and negative Poisson's ratio.

Project description:Designing new materials with novel topological properties and reduced dimensionality is always desirable for material innovation. Here we report the design of a two-dimensional material, namely Be5C2 monolayer on the basis of density functional theory computations. In Be5C2 monolayer, each carbon atom binds with five beryllium atoms in almost the same plane, forming a quasi-planar pentacoordinate carbon moiety. Be5C2 monolayer appears to have good stability as revealed by its moderate cohesive energy, positive phonon modes and high melting point. It is the lowest-energy structure with the Be5C2 stoichiometry in two-dimensional space and therefore holds some promise to be realized experimentally. Be5C2 monolayer is a gapless semiconductor with a Dirac-like point in the band structure and also has an unusual negative Poisson's ratio. If synthesized, Be5C2 monolayer may find applications in electronics and mechanics.

Counting the electrons in a multiphoton ionization by elastic scattering of microwaves.

Project description:Multiphoton ionization (MPI) is a fundamental first step in high-energy laser-matter interaction and is important for understanding the mechanism of plasma formation. With the discovery of MPI more than 50 years ago, there were numerous attempts to determine the basic physical constants of this process in direct experiments, namely photoionization rates and cross-sections of the MPI; however, no reliable data was available until now, and the spread in the literature values often reaches 2-3 orders of magnitude. This is due to the inability to conduct absolute measurements of plasma electron numbers generated by MPI, which leads to uncertainties and, sometimes, contradictions between MPI cross-section values utilized by different researchers across the field. Here, we report the first direct measurement of absolute plasma electron numbers generated at MPI of air, and subsequently we precisely determine the ionization rate and cross-section of eight-photon ionization of oxygen molecule by 800 nm photons σ8 = (3.3 ± 0.3)×10-130 W-8m16s-1. The method, based on the absolute measurement of the electron number created by MPI using elastic scattering of microwaves off the plasma volume in Rayleigh regime, establishes a general approach to directly measure and tabulate basic constants of the MPI process for various gases and photon energies.

Practical counting of substitutive paths on a planar infrastructure network.

Project description:When there are many non-intersecting paths between two vertices on a network, the connectivity is fault-tolerant. Because of no common vertices on these paths, they can be emergently used in avoiding destroyed parts on the usual paths by any disasters or attacks. It gives a tolerance index whether the combination of non-intersecting paths is many or few. However, to enumerate such paths is an intractable combinatorial problem, no practical algorithm has been known. On the other hand, many socio-technological infrastructure networks are embedded on the surface of Earth. Thus, as an approximate solution, we extendedly apply the counting method based on a path matrix with our proposed mapping to directed acyclic graphs from a planar network according to each pair of source and terminal vertices. The tendency of many or few combinations of the paths is clearly investigated through computer simulations for realistic networks. This approach will be useful for evaluating the existence of substitutive paths to improve the tolerance in risk management.

Synthesis and crystal structure of a sulphur-bridged molecular hoop consisting of 5,7,12,14-tetrathiapentacene.

Project description:A cyclic dimer consisting of 5,7,12,14-tetrathiapentacene (TC[2]TTP) forms a new extended series of thiacalix[n]arenes, and was successfully synthesized by an intramolecular Friedel-Crafts-type condensation of the macrocyclic precursor. TC[2]TTP was characterized using 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Its hoop-shaped molecular structure was determined by X-ray crystallography. The two-tub-shaped TTP formed a hexagonal geometry via a sulphur linker, and TC[2]TTP adopted a honeycomb structure with columnar stacking in the crystal structure. Furthermore, TC[2]TTP exhibited crystal polymorphism, which incorporated appropriate organic solvents such as CHCl3, benzene, and toluene into its internal cavity. This suggests that TC[2]TTP is a candidate for the components of cavity-assembled porous solids based on molecular tiling.

Chiral Jahn-Teller Distortion in Quasi-Planar Boron Clusters.

Project description:In this work, we have observed that some chiral boron clusters (B16-, B20-, B24-, and B28-) can simultaneously have helical molecular orbitals and helical spin densities; these seem to be the first compounds discovered to have this intriguing property. We show that chiral Jahn-Teller distortion of quasi-planar boron clusters drives the formation of the helical molecular spin densities in these clusters and show that elongation/enhancement in helical molecular orbitals can be achieved by simply adding more building blocks via a linker. Aromaticity of these boron clusters is discussed. Chiral boron clusters may find potential applications in spintronics, such as molecular magnets.
