Operando Raman Shift Replaces Current in Electrochemical Analysis of Li-ion Batteries: A Comparative Study.

ABSTRACT: Li-rich and catalytically active γ-LixV2O5 (x = 1.48) was investigated as a cathode for its heterogeneous charge transfer kinetics. Using a specially designed two-electrode system lithium half cell, Butler-Volmer analysis was performed, and Raman spectra were acquired in 18 mV intervals. A direct correlation was observed between the Raman shift of the active modes Ag,Bg, Au, and Bu, and the development of the Faraday current at the working electrode. The Raman intensity and the Raman shift were implemented to replace the current in a Tafel plot used for the analysis of Butler-Volmer kinetics. Striking similarities in the charge transfer proportionality constants α were found for current and Raman-based analysis. The potential of this new method of Raman-aided electrochemical detection at the diffraction limit is discussed.

Beam damage in operando X-ray diffraction studies of Li-ion batteries.

Project description:Operando powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) is a widely employed method for the investigation of structural evolution and phase transitions in electrodes for rechargeable batteries. Due to the advantages of high brilliance and high X-ray energies, the experiments are often carried out at synchrotron facilities. It is known that the X-ray exposure can cause beam damage in the battery cell, resulting in hindrance of the electrochemical reaction. This study investigates the extent of X-ray beam damage during operando PXRD synchrotron experiments on battery materials with varying X-ray energies, amount of X-ray exposure and battery cell chemistries. Battery cells were exposed to 15, 25 or 35 keV X-rays (with varying dose) during charge or discharge in a battery test cell specially designed for operando experiments. The observed beam damage was probed by µPXRD mapping of the electrodes recovered from the operando battery cell after charge/discharge. The investigation reveals that the beam damage depends strongly on both the X-ray energy and the amount of exposure, and that it also depends strongly on the cell chemistry, i.e. the chemical composition of the electrode.

Potentials in Li-Ion Batteries Probed by Operando Ambient Pressure Photoelectron Spectroscopy.

Project description:The important electrochemical processes in a battery happen at the solid/liquid interfaces. Operando ambient pressure photoelectron spectroscopy (APPES) is one tool to study these processes with chemical specificity. However, accessing this crucial interface and identifying the interface signal are not trivial. Therefore, we present a measurement setup, together with a suggested model, exemplifying how APPES can be used to probe potential differences over the electrode/electrolyte interface, even without direct access to the interface. Both the change in electron electrochemical potential over the solid/liquid interface, and the change in Li chemical potential of the working electrode (WE) surface at Li-ion equilibrium can be probed. Using a Li4Ti5O12 composite as a WE, our results show that the shifts in kinetic energy of the electrolyte measured by APPES can be correlated to the electrochemical reactions occurring at the WE/electrolyte interface. Different shifts in kinetic energy are seen depending on if a phase transition reaction occurs or if a single phase is lithiated. The developed methodology can be used to evaluate charge transfer over the WE/electrolyte interface as well as the lithiation/delithiation mechanism of the WE.

Direct monitoring of trace water in Li-ion batteries using operando fluorescence spectroscopy.

Project description:The direct monitoring of trace water in real time during electrochemical cycles is of vital importance because water impurities are one of the causes of reduced lifetimes and capacity fading in Li-ion batteries. However, the most common Karl-Fischer titration lacks the ability to perform real-time monitoring of trace water while the battery is operating. Here, we demonstrate the use of nanosized coordination polymers as a sensing platform for the rapid and highly sensitive detection of water molecules, which gives a distinguishable turn-on fluorescence (FL) response toward water with a quantifiable detection range from 0 to 1.2% v/v, offering a novel opportunity to monitor trace water during electrochemical cycles. To demonstrate the practical value of our platform, we designed an in situ measurement system using nanosized coordination polymers as an electrolyte additive. Within the platform, the findings indicate that trace water is indeed generated during the first discharge process, in which the FL intensity shows a linear increase over time along with the gradual formation of water. We believe that this strategy provides new insights into the in situ monitoring of complex electrochemical processes, and it may help to pave the way for the development of new operando analytical techniques for lithium-ion batteries.

Electrochemical Performance of Orthorhombic CsPbI3 Perovskite in Li-Ion Batteries.

Project description:A facile solution process was employed to prepare CsPbI3 as an anode material for Li-ion batteries. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray data confirms the orthorhombic phase of CsPbI3 at room temperature. As obtained from bond valence calculations, strained bonds between Pb and I are identified within PbI6 octahedral units. Morphological study shows that the as-prepared δ-CsPbI3 forms a nanorod-like structure. The XPS analysis confirm the presence of Cs (3d, 4d), Pb (4d, 4f, 5d) and I (3p, 3d, 4d). The lithiation process involves both intercalation and conversion reactions, as confirmed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and first-principles calculations. Impedance spectroscopy coupled with the distribution function of relaxation times identifies charge transfer processes due to Li metal foil and anode/electrolyte interfaces. An initial discharge capacity of 151 mAhg-1 is found to continuously increase to reach a maximum of ~275 mAhg-1 at 65 cycles, while it drops to ~240 mAhg-1 at 75 cycles and then slowly decreases to 235 mAhg-1 at 100 cycles. Considering the performance and structural integrity during electrochemical performance, δ-CsPbI3 is a promising material for future Li-ion battery (LIB) application.

Electrochemical Oscillation during Galvanostatic Charging of LiCrTiO4 in Li-Ion Batteries.

Project description:In the late 1960s, the establishment of Prigogine's dissipative structure theory laid the foundation for the (electro)chemical oscillation phenomenon, which has been widely investigated in some electrochemical reactions, such as electro-catalysis and electro-deposition, while the electrochemical oscillation of Li-ion batteries has just been discovered in spinel Li4Ti5O12 a few years before. In this work, spinel LiCrTiO4 samples were synthesized by using a high-temperature solid-state method, characterized with SEM (Scanning electron microscope), XRD (X-ray diffraction), Raman and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) measurements, and electrochemically tested in Li-ion batteries to study the electrochemical oscillation. When sintering in a powder form at a temperature between 800 and 900 °C, we achieved the electrochemical oscillation of spinel LiCrTiO4 during charging, and it is suppressed in the non-stoichiometric LiCrTiO4 samples, especially for reducing the Li content or increasing the Cr content. Therefore, this work developed another two-phase material as the powder-sintered LiCrTiO4 exhibiting the electrochemical oscillation in Li-ion batteries, which would inspire us to explore more two-phase electrode materials in Li-ion batteries, Na-ion batteries, etc.

Electrochemical Li Topotactic Reaction in Layered SnP<sub>3</sub> for Superior Li-Ion Batteries.

Project description:The development of new anode materials having high electrochemical performances and interesting reaction mechanisms is highly required to satisfy the need for long-lasting mobile electronic devices and electric vehicles. Here, we report a layer crystalline structured SnP3 and its unique electrochemical behaviors with Li. The SnP3 was simply synthesized through modification of Sn crystallography by combination with P and its potential as an anode material for LIBs was investigated. During Li insertion reaction, the SnP3 anode showed an interesting two-step electrochemical reaction mechanism comprised of a topotactic transition (0.7-2.0 V) and a conversion (0.0-2.0 V) reaction. When the SnP3-based composite electrode was tested within the topotactic reaction region (0.7-2.0 V) between SnP3 and LixSnP3 (x ≤ 4), it showed excellent electrochemical properties, such as a high volumetric capacity (1st discharge/charge capacity was 840/663 mA h cm-3) with a high initial coulombic efficiency, stable cycle behavior (636 mA h cm-3 over 100 cycles), and fast rate capability (550 mA h cm-3 at 3C). This layered SnP3 anode will be applicable to a new anode material for rechargeable LIBs.

Hollow-core optical fibre sensors for operando Raman spectroscopy investigation of Li-ion battery liquid electrolytes.

Project description:Improved analytical tools are urgently required to identify degradation and failure mechanisms in Li-ion batteries. However, understanding and ultimately avoiding these detrimental mechanisms requires continuous tracking of complex electrochemical processes in different battery components. Here, we report an operando spectroscopy method that enables monitoring the chemistry of a carbonate-based liquid electrolyte during electrochemical cycling in Li-ion batteries with a graphite anode and a LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 cathode. By embedding a hollow-core optical fibre probe inside a lab-scale pouch cell, we demonstrate the effective evolution of the liquid electrolyte species by background-free Raman spectroscopy. The analysis of the spectroscopy measurements reveals changes in the ratio of carbonate solvents and electrolyte additives as a function of the cell voltage and show the potential to track the lithium-ion solvation dynamics. The proposed operando methodology contributes to understanding better the current Li-ion battery limitations and paves the way for studies of the degradation mechanisms in different electrochemical energy storage systems.

Interrogating the Light-Induced Charging Mechanism in Li-Ion Batteries Using <i>Operando</i> Optical Microscopy.

Project description:Photobatteries, batteries with a light-sensitive electrode, have recently been proposed as a way of simultaneously capturing and storing solar energy in a single device. Despite reports of photocharging with multiple different electrode materials, the overall mechanism of operation remains poorly understood. Here, we use operando optical reflection microscopy to investigate light-induced charging in LixV2O5 electrodes. We image the electrode, at the single-particle level, under three conditions: (a) with a closed circuit and light but no electronic power source (photocharging), (b) during galvanostatic cycling with light (photoenhanced), and (c) with heat but no light (thermal). We demonstrate that light can indeed drive lithiation changes in LixV2O5 while maintaining charge neutrality, possibly via a combination of faradaic and nonfaradaic effects taking place in individual particles. Our results provide an addition to the photobattery mechanistic model highlighting that both intercalation-based charging and lithium concentration polarization effects contribute to the increased photocharging capacity.

Understanding Inhomogeneous Reactions in Li-Ion Batteries: Operando Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction on Two-Layer Electrodes.

Project description:To understand inhomogeneous reactions perpendicular to the current collector in an electrode for batteries, a method combining operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction and two-layer electrodes with different porosities is developed. The two layers are built using two different active materials (LiNi0.80Co0.15Al0.05O2 and LiMn2O4), therefore, tracing each diffraction pattern reveals which active material is reacting during the electrochemical measurement in transmission mode. The results demonstrate that the active material close to the separator is obviously more active than that one close to the current collector in the case of low porosity electrodes. This inhomogeneity should be due to the rate-limitation and especially to low average ionic conductivity of the electrolyte in the porous electrode because the current flows first mainly into the electrode regions close to the separator. The inhomogeneity is found to be mitigated by the adjustment of the electrode density and thus porosity. Hence, the novel operando method reveals a clear inhomogeneous reaction perpendicular to the current collector.

A Critical Analysis of Chemical and Electrochemical Oxidation Mechanisms in Li-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Electrolyte decomposition limits the lifetime of commercial lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and slows the adoption of next-generation energy storage technologies. A fundamental understanding of electrolyte degradation is critical to rationally design stable and energy-dense LIBs. To date, most explanations for electrolyte decomposition at LIB positive electrodes have relied on ethylene carbonate (EC) being chemically oxidized by evolved singlet oxygen (1O2) or electrochemically oxidized. In this work, we apply density functional theory to assess the feasibility of these mechanisms. We find that electrochemical oxidation is unfavorable at any potential reached during normal LIB operation, and we predict that previously reported reactions between the EC and 1O2 are kinetically limited at room temperature. Our calculations suggest an alternative mechanism in which EC reacts with superoxide (O2-) and/or peroxide (O22-) anions. This work provides a new perspective on LIB electrolyte decomposition and motivates further studies to understand the reactivity at positive electrodes.
