Cleavage of Calcitic CaCO₃ during Dissolution in Aqueous Solution.

ABSTRACT: Calcite cleavage was observed using a device to accelerate the formation and dissolution of calcitic CaCO₃ by acidification in aqueous solutions. Scanning electron microscopy showed that crystals formed within 1 day and dissolution began at 3 days of aging. In the X-ray diffraction pattern, calcite was predominantly formed but an amorphous phase did not exist, even after 12 days of aging. In the diffraction pattern and lattice images obtained using a series of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses, cleavages mainly occurred in the {101̅1} plane and some cleavages were observed through the {101̅4} plane.

Current CaCO3 dissolution at the seafloor caused by anthropogenic CO2.

Project description:Oceanic uptake of anthropogenic CO2 leads to decreased pH, carbonate ion concentration, and saturation state with respect to CaCO3 minerals, causing increased dissolution of these minerals at the deep seafloor. This additional dissolution will figure prominently in the neutralization of man-made CO2 However, there has been no concerted assessment of the current extent of anthropogenic CaCO3 dissolution at the deep seafloor. Here, recent databases of bottom-water chemistry, benthic currents, and CaCO3 content of deep-sea sediments are combined with a rate model to derive the global distribution of benthic calcite dissolution rates and obtain primary confirmation of an anthropogenic component. By comparing preindustrial with present-day rates, we determine that significant anthropogenic dissolution now occurs in the western North Atlantic, amounting to 40-100% of the total seafloor dissolution at its most intense locations. At these locations, the calcite compensation depth has risen ∼300 m. Increased benthic dissolution was also revealed at various hot spots in the southern extent of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. Our findings place constraints on future predictions of ocean acidification, are consequential to the fate of benthic calcifiers, and indicate that a by-product of human activities is currently altering the geological record of the deep sea.

The interplay of dissolution, solution crystallization and solid-state transformation of amorphous indomethacin in aqueous solution.

Project description:Supersaturation profiles of amorphous indomethacin in aqueous solution containing 0.4 wt% and 4 wt% of isopropanol were predicted by combining separately-determined kinetics for dissolution, solution crystallization, and solid-state transformation. The kinetics of solid-state transformation were measured and compared to various data from the literature. The proposed kinetic model accounts for dissolution, solution crystallization and amorphous-to-crystalline solid-state transformation. It was validated for different initial amounts of amorphous and crystalline material and systems with different isopropanol contents. Furthermore, the influence of polyethylene glycol on the supersaturation behavior was investigated. The results clearly show the robustness of the model and give insight into the interplay of dissolution, solution crystallization, and solid-state transformation of. In particular, the influence of solid-state transformation on the overall supersaturation profile was elucidated in a quantitative manner. An amorphicity function φ(t) is proposed to account for the kinetics of the solid-state transformation. Its general form could be derived consistently from different sets of experimental data and seems to be independent of the particle size of the amorphous material and hydrodynamic conditions. This work is among the first of its kind to successfully integrate dissolution, crystallization from solution and solid-state transformation in a model that shows good predictability.

The lower pT limit of deep hydrocarbon synthesis by CaCO3 aqueous reduction.

Project description:The deep abiogenic synthesis of hydrocarbons is possible under the conditions of the asthenosphere. We have found that this process can also occur under the mineral and thermobaric conditions of subducting slabs. We have investigated the abiogenic synthesis of hydrocarbon systems at pressures of 2.0-6.6 GPa and temperatures of 250-600 °C. The determined lower thermobaric limit of the reaction at 280-300 °C and 2-3 GPa corresponds to a depth of 70-80 km during cold subduction. The hydrocarbon fluid formed in the slab can migrate upwards through the network of faults and fractures to form petroleum deposits.

UO2 dissolution in bicarbonate solution with H2O2: the effect of temperature.

Project description:Upon nuclear waste canister failure and contact of spent nuclear fuel with groundwater, the UO2 matrix of spent fuel will interact with oxidants in the groundwater generated by water radiolysis. Bicarbonate (HCO3-) is often found in groundwater, and the H2O2 induced oxidative dissolution of UO2 in bicarbonate solution has previously been studied under various conditions. Temperatures in the repository at the time of canister failure will differ depending on the location, yet the effect of temperature on oxidative dissolution is unknown. To investigate, the decomposition rate of H2O2 at the UO2 surface and dissolution of UVI in bicarbonate solution (0.1, 1, 10 and 50 mM) was analysed at various temperatures (10, 25, 45 and 60 °C). At [HCO3-] ≥ 1 mM, the concentration of dissolved UVI decreased with increasing temperature. This was attributed to the formation of UVI-bicarbonate species at the surface and a change in the mechanism of H2O2 decomposition from oxidative to catalytic. At 0.1 mM, no obvious correlation between temperature and U dissolution was observed, and thermodynamic calculations indicated this was due to a change in the surface species. A pathway to explain the observed dissolution behaviour of UO2 in bicarbonate solution as a function of temperature was proposed.

Functions of MnOx in NaCl Aqueous Solution for Artificial Photosynthesis.

Project description:Photoelectrochemical water splitting has been intensively investigated as artificial photosynthesis technology to convert solar energy into chemical energy. The use of seawater and salted water has advantages for minimum environmental burden; however, the oxidation of Cl- ion to hypochlorous acid (HClO), which has toxicity and heavy corrosiveness, should occur at the anode, along with the oxygen evolution. Here, O2 and HClO production in aqueous solution containing Cl- on photoanodes modified with various metal oxides was investigated. The modification of MnOx resulted in the promotion of the O2 evolution reaction (OER) specifically without HClO production over a wide range of conditions. The results will contribute not only to the practical application of artificial photosynthesis using salted water but also to the elucidation of substantial function of manganese as the element for OER center in natural photosynthesis.

Characterisation of CaCO3 phases during strain-specific ureolytic precipitation.

Project description:Numerous microbial species can selectively precipitate mineral carbonates with enhanced mechanical properties, however, understanding exactly how they achieve this control represents a major challenge in the field of biomineralisation. We have studied microbial induced calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation (MICP) in three ureolytic bacterial strains from the Sporosarcina family, including S. newyorkensis, a newly isolated microbe from the deep sea. We find that the interplay between structural water and strain-specific amino acid groups is fundamental to the stabilisation of vaterite and that, under the same conditions, different isolates yield distinctly different polymorphs. The latter is found to be associated with different urease activities and, consequently, precipitation kinetics, which change depending on pressure-temperature conditions. Further, CaCO3 polymorph selection also depends on the coupled effect of chemical treatment and initial bacterial concentrations. Our findings provide new insights into strain-specific CaCO3 polymorphic selection and stabilisation, and open up promising avenues for designing bio-reinforced geo-materials that capitalise on the different particle bond mechanical properties offered by different polymorphs.

Controlling CaCO3 Particle Size with {Ca2+}:{CO3 2-} Ratios in Aqueous Environments.

Project description:The effect of stoichiometry on the new formation and subsequent growth of CaCO3 was investigated over a large range of solution stoichiometries (10-4 < r aq < 104, where r aq = {Ca2+}:{CO3 2-}) at various, initially constant degrees of supersaturation (30 < Ωcal < 200, where Ωcal = {Ca2+}{CO3 2-}/K sp), pH of 10.5 ± 0.27, and ambient temperature and pressure. At r aq = 1 and Ωcal < 150, dynamic light scattering (DLS) showed that ion adsorption onto nuclei (1-10 nm) was the dominant mechanism. At higher supersaturation levels, no continuum of particle sizes is observed with time, suggesting aggregation of prenucleation clusters into larger particles as the dominant growth mechanism. At r aq ≠ 1 (Ωcal = 100), prenucleation particles remained smaller than 10 nm for up to 15 h. Cross-polarized light in optical light microscopy was used to measure the time needed for new particle formation and growth to at least 20 μm. This precipitation time depends strongly and asymmetrically on r aq. Complementary molecular dynamics (MD) simulations confirm that r aq affects CaCO3 nanoparticle formation substantially. At r aq = 1 and Ωcal ≫ 1000, the largest nanoparticle in the system had a 21-68% larger gyration radius after 20 ns of simulation time than in nonstoichiometric systems. Our results imply that, besides Ωcal, stoichiometry affects particle size, persistence, growth time, and ripening time toward micrometer-sized crystals. Our results may help us to improve the understanding, prediction, and formation of CaCO3 in geological, industrial, and geo-engineering settings.

pK a of ubiquinone, menaquinone, phylloquinone, plastoquinone, and rhodoquinone in aqueous solution.

Project description:Quinones can accept two electrons and two protons, and are involved in electron transfer and proton transfer reactions in photosynthetic reaction centers. To date, the pK a of these quinones in aqueous solution have not been reported. We calculated the pK a of the initial protonation (Q·- to QH·) and the second protonation (QH- to QH2) of 1,4-quinones using a quantum chemical approach. The calculated energy differences of the protonation reactions Q·- to QH· and QH- to QH2 in the aqueous phase for nine 1,4-quinones were highly correlated with the experimentally measured pK a(Q·-/QH·) and pK a(QH-/QH2), respectively. In the present study, we report the pK a(Q·-/QH·) and pK a(QH-/QH2) of ubiquinone, menaquinone, phylloquinone, plastoquinone, and rhodoquinone in aqueous solution.

Investigations towards incorporation of Eu3+ and Cm3+ during ZrO2 crystallization in aqueous solution.

Project description:Nuclear energy provides a widely applied carbon-reduced energy source. Following operation, the spent nuclear fuel (SNF), containing a mixture of radiotoxic elements such as transuranics, needs to be safely disposed of. Safe storage of SNF in a deep geological repository (DGR) relies on multiple engineered and natural retention barriers to prevent environmental contamination. In this context, zirconia (ZrO2) formed on the SNF rod cladding, could be employed as an engineered barrier for immobilization of radionuclides via structural incorporation. This study investigates the incorporation of Eu3+ and Cm3+, representatives for trivalent transuranics, into zirconia by co-precipitation and crystallization in aqueous solution at 80 °C. Complementary structural and microstructural characterization has been carried out by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), spectrum imaging analysis based on energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy in scanning transmission electron microscopy mode (STEM-EDXS), and luminescence spectroscopy. The results reveal the association of the dopants with the zirconia particles and elucidate the presence of distinct bulk and superficially incorporated species. Hydrothermal aging for up to 460 days in alkaline media points to great stability of these incorporated species after initial crystallization, with no indication of phase segregation or release of Eu3+ and Cm3+ over time. These results suggest that zirconia would be a suitable technical retention barrier for mobilized trivalent actinides in a DGR.

Removal of As(V) from aqueous solution using modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles.

Project description:The removal of arsenic contamination from the aqueous environment is of great importance in the conservation of the Earth's water resources, and surfactants are a promising material used to modify magnetic nanoparticles to improve adsorption properties. Therefore, it is important to develop efficient and selective adsorbents for arsenic. Surface modification of Fe3O4 was carried out using anionic, cationic and zwitterionic surfactants to obtain composite Fe3O4@SDS, Fe3O4@CTAB, Fe3O4@SNC 16 and Fe3O4@NPC 16 (collectively referred to as Fe3O4@surfactants). The synthesized composite Fe3O4@surfactants magnetic nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, TEM and FTIR. The As(V) removal characteristics of the composite magnetic nanoparticles from the aqueous solution were evaluated by adsorption batch experiments which indicated the possibility of effective application of the surfactant-modified Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles for the removal of As(V) from aqueous solution. The adsorption equilibrium of the composites was reached in 30 min and the kinetic data followed the pseudo-second-order model. Langmuir equation could represent the adsorption isotherm data very well. Moreover, under the identical conditions, Fe3O4@CTAB showed maximum capacity of adsorption for As(V) (55.671 mg g-1), with its removal efficiency being much higher than that of the other composites. In addition, the Fe3O4@surfactants composite magnetic nanoparticles retained 93.5% of its initial arsenic removal efficiency even after re-using it five times. The mechanism of arsenic adsorption by Fe3O4@surfactants composite magnetic nanoparticles was proved to be complexation via electrostatic attraction, which was mainly innersphere in nature.
