Realization of topological Mott insulator in a twisted bilayer graphene lattice model.

ABSTRACT: Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene has recently become a thriving material platform realizing correlated electron phenomena taking place within its topological flat bands. Several numerical and analytical methods have been applied to understand the correlated phases therein, revealing some similarity with the quantum Hall physics. In this work, we provide a Mott-Hubbard perspective for the TBG system. Employing the large-scale density matrix renormalization group on the lattice model containing the projected Coulomb interactions only, we identify a first-order quantum phase transition between the insulating stripe phase and the quantum anomalous Hall state with the Chern number of ±1. Our results not only shed light on the mechanism of the quantum anomalous Hall state discovered at three-quarters filling, but also provide an example of the topological Mott insulator, i.e., the quantum anomalous Hall state in the strong coupling limit.

Higher-order topological Mott insulator on the pyrochlore lattice.

Project description:We provide the first unbiased evidence for a higher-order topological Mott insulator in three dimensions by numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations. This insulating phase is adiabatically connected to a third-order topological insulator in the noninteracting limit, which features gapless modes around the corners of the pyrochlore lattice and is characterized by a [Formula: see text] spin-Berry phase. The difference between the correlated and non-correlated topological phases is that in the former phase the gapless corner modes emerge only in spin excitations being Mott-like. We also show that the topological phase transition from the third-order topological Mott insulator to the usual Mott insulator occurs when the bulk spin gap solely closes.

Imaging topological and correlated insulating states in twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene.

Project description:Flat bands in Van der Waals heterostructure provide an ideal platform for unveiling emergent quantum electronic phases. One celebrated example is twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene, in which the effects of electronic correlation have been observed. Here, we report the observation via scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy of correlated insulating states in twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene, leading to the formation of an electron crystal phase. At integer fillings, the strong Coulomb interaction redistributes flat-band electrons within one moiré unit cell, producing an insulating state with vanishing density of states at the Fermi level. Moreover, our approach enables the direct visualization of an ordered lattice of topological torus-shaped states, generated by the interaction between the electron crystal and the non-trivial band topology of twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene. Our results illustrate an efficient strategy for entwining topological physics with strong electron correlation in twisted van der Waals structures.

Dimensional crossover and cold-atom realization of topological Mott insulators.

Project description:Interacting cold-atomic gases in optical lattices offer an experimental approach to outstanding problems of many body physics. One important example is the interplay of interaction and topology which promises to generate a variety of exotic phases such as the fractionalized Chern insulator or the topological Mott insulator. Both theoretically understanding these states of matter and finding suitable systems that host them have proven to be challenging problems. Here we propose a cold-atom setup where Hubbard on-site interactions give rise to spin liquid-like phases: weak and strong topological Mott insulators. They represent the celebrated paradigm of an interacting and topological quantum state with fractionalized spinon excitations that inherit the topology of the non-interacting system. Our proposal shall help to pave the way for a controlled experimental investigation of this exotic state of matter in optical lattices. Furthermore, it allows for the investigation of a dimensional crossover from a two-dimensional quantum spin Hall insulating phase to a three-dimensional strong topological insulator by tuning the hopping between the layers.

Experimental realization of a reconfigurable electroacoustic topological insulator.

Project description:A substantial challenge in guiding elastic waves is the presence of reflection and scattering at sharp edges, defects, and disorder. Recently, mechanical topological insulators have sought to overcome this challenge by supporting back-scattering resistant wave transmission. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a reconfigurable electroacoustic topological insulator exhibiting an analog to the quantum valley Hall effect (QVHE). Using programmable switches, this phononic structure allows for rapid reconfiguration of domain walls and thus the ability to control back-scattering resistant wave propagation along dynamic interfaces for phonons lying in static and finite-frequency regimes. Accordingly, a graphene-like polyactic acid (PLA) layer serves as the host medium, equipped with periodically arranged and bonded piezoelectric (PZT) patches, resulting in two Dirac cones at the K points. The PZT patches are then connected to negative capacitance external circuits to break inversion symmetry and create nontrivial topologically protected bandgaps. As such, topologically protected interface waves are demonstrated numerically and validated experimentally for different predefined trajectories over a broad frequency range.

Unusual magnetotransport in twisted bilayer graphene.

Project description:SignificanceWhen two sheets of graphene are twisted to the magic angle of 1.1∘, the resulting flat moiré bands can host exotic correlated electronic states such as superconductivity and ferromagnetism. Here, we show transport properties of a twisted bilayer graphene device at 1.38∘, far enough above the magic angle that we do not expect exotic correlated states. Instead, we see several unusual behaviors in the device's resistivity upon tuning both charge carrier density and perpendicular magnetic field. We can reproduce these behaviors with a surprisingly simple model based on Hofstadter's butterfly. These results shed light on the underlying properties of twisted bilayer graphene.

Waveguide-integrated twisted bilayer graphene photodetectors.

Project description:Graphene photodetectors have exhibited high bandwidth and capability of being integrated with silicon photonics (SiPh), holding promise for future optical communication devices. However, they usually suffer from a low photoresponsivity due to weak optical absorption. In this work, we have implemented SiPh-integrated twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) detectors and reported a responsivity of 0.65 A W-1 for telecom wavelength 1,550 nm. The high responsivity enables a 3-dB bandwidth of >65 GHz and a high data stream rate of 50 Gbit s-1. Such high responsivity is attributed to the enhanced optical absorption, which is facilitated by van Hove singularities in the band structure of high-mobility tBLG with 4.1o twist angle. The uniform performance of the fabricated photodetector arrays demonstrates a fascinating prospect of large-area tBLG as a material candidate for heterogeneous integration with SiPh.

Baby skyrmions in Chern ferromagnets and topological mechanism for spin-polaron formation in twisted bilayer graphene.

Project description:The advent of moiré materials has galvanized interest in the nature of charge carriers in topological bands. In contrast to conventional materials with electron-like charge carriers, topological bands allow for more exotic possibilities where charge is carried by nontrivial topological textures, such as skyrmions. However, the real-space description of skyrmions is ill-suited to address the limit of small skyrmions and to account for momentum-space band features. Here, we develop a momentum-space approach to study the formation of the smallest skyrmions - spin polarons, formed as bound states of an electron and a spin flip - in topological ferromagnets. We show that, quite generally, there is an attraction between an electron and a spin flip that is purely topological in origin, promoting the formation of spin polarons. Applying our results to twisted bilayer graphene, we identify a range of parameters where spin polarons are formed and discuss their possible experimental signatures.

Elastocapillary cleaning of twisted bilayer graphene interfaces.

Project description:Although layered van der Waals (vdW) materials involve vast interface areas that are often subject to contamination, vdW interactions between layers may squeeze interfacial contaminants into nanopockets. More intriguingly, those nanopockets could spontaneously coalesce into larger ones, which are easier to be squeezed out the atomic channels. Such unusual phenomena have been thought of as an Ostwald ripening process that is driven by the capillarity of the confined liquid. The underlying mechanism, however, is unclear as the crucial role played by the sheet's elasticity has not been previously appreciated. Here, we demonstrate the coalescence of separated nanopockets and propose a cleaning mechanism in which both elastic and capillary forces are at play. We elucidate this mechanism in terms of control of the nanopocket morphology and the coalescence of nanopockets via a mechanical stretch. Besides, we demonstrate that bilayer graphene interfaces excel in self-renewal phenomena.

Four-band non-Abelian topological insulator and its experimental realization.

Project description:Very recently, increasing attention has been focused on non-Abelian topological charges, e.g., the quaternion group Q8. Different from Abelian topological band insulators, these systems involve multiple entangled bulk bandgaps and support nontrivial edge states that manifest the non-Abelian topological features. Furthermore, a system with an even or odd number of bands will exhibit a significant difference in non-Abelian topological classification. To date, there has been scant research investigating even-band non-Abelian topological insulators. Here, we both theoretically explore and experimentally realize a four-band PT (inversion and time-reversal) symmetric system, where two new classes of topological charges as well as edge states are comprehensively studied. We illustrate their difference in the four-dimensional (4D) rotation sense on the stereographically projected Clifford tori. We show the evolution of the bulk topology by extending the 1D Hamiltonian onto a 2D plane and provide the accompanying edge state distributions following an analytical method. Our work presents an exhaustive study of four-band non-Abelian topological insulators and paves the way towards other even-band systems.

Multiple flat bands and topological Hofstadter butterfly in twisted bilayer graphene close to the second magic angle.

Project description:Moiré superlattices in two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures provide an efficient way to engineer electron band properties. The recent discovery of exotic quantum phases and their interplay in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) has made this moiré system one of the most renowned condensed matter platforms. So far studies of tBLG have been mostly focused on the lowest two flat moiré bands at the first magic angle θm1 ∼ 1.1°, leaving high-order moiré bands and magic angles largely unexplored. Here we report an observation of multiple well-isolated flat moiré bands in tBLG close to the second magic angle θm2 ∼ 0.5°, which cannot be explained without considering electron-election interactions. With high magnetic field magnetotransport measurements we further reveal an energetically unbound Hofstadter butterfly spectrum in which continuously extended quantized Landau level gaps cross all trivial band gaps. The connected Hofstadter butterfly strongly evidences the topologically nontrivial textures of the multiple moiré bands. Overall, our work provides a perspective for understanding the quantum phases in tBLG and the fractal Hofstadter spectra of multiple topological bands.
