Metallic: A Bivalent Ambimodal Material Property?

ABSTRACT: Many metallic visual stimuli, especially the so-called precious metals, have long had a rich symbolic meaning for humans. Intriguingly, however, while metallic is used to describe sensations associated with pretty much every sensory modality, the descriptor is normally positively valenced in the case of vision while typically being negatively valenced in the case of those metallic sensations that are elicited by the stimulation of the chemical senses. In fact, outside the visual modality, metallic would often appear to be used to describe those sensations that are unfamiliar and unpleasant as much as to refer to any identifiable perceptual quality (or attribute). In this review, we assess those sensory stimuli that people choose to refer to as metallic, summarising the multiple, often symbolic, meanings of (especially precious) metals. The evidence of positively valenced sensation transference from metallic serviceware (e.g., plates, cups, and cutlery) to the food and drink with which it comes into contact is also reviewed.

Sink property of metallic glass free surfaces.

Project description:When heated to a temperature close to glass transition temperature, metallic glasses (MGs) begin to crystallize. Under deformation or particle irradiation, crystallization occurs at even lower temperatures. Hence, phase instability represents an application limit for MGs. Here, we report that MG membranes of a few nanometers thickness exhibit properties different from their bulk MG counterparts. The study uses in situ transmission electron microscopy with concurrent heavy ion irradiation and annealing to observe crystallization behaviors of MGs. For relatively thick membranes, ion irradiations introduce excessive free volumes and thus induce nanocrystal formation at a temperature linearly decreasing with increasing ion fluences. For ultra-thin membranes, however, the critical temperature to initiate crystallization is about 100 K higher than the bulk glass transition temperature. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that this effect is due to the sink property of the surfaces which can effectively remove excessive free volumes. These findings suggest that nanostructured MGs having a higher surface to volume ratio are expected to have higher crystallization resistance, which could pave new paths for materials applications in harsh environments requiring higher stabilities.

Pretraining Strategies for Structure Agnostic Material Property Prediction.

Project description:In recent years, machine learning (ML), especially graph neural network (GNN) models, has been successfully used for fast and accurate prediction of material properties. However, most ML models rely on relaxed crystal structures to develop descriptors for accurate predictions. Generating these relaxed crystal structures can be expensive and time-consuming, thus requiring an additional processing step for models that rely on them. To address this challenge, structure-agnostic methods have been developed, which use fixed-length descriptors engineered based on human knowledge about the material. However, the fixed-length descriptors are often hand-engineered and require extensive domain knowledge and generally are not used in the context of learnable models which are known to have a superior performance. Recent advancements have proposed learnable frameworks that can construct representations based on stoichiometry alone, allowing the flexibility of using deep learning frameworks as well as leveraging structure-agnostic learning. In this work, we propose three different pretraining strategies that can be used to pretrain these structure-agnostic, learnable frameworks to further improve the downstream material property prediction performance. We incorporate strategies such as self-supervised learning (SSL), fingerprint learning (FL), and multimodal learning (ML) and demonstrate their efficacy on downstream tasks for the Roost architecture, a popular structure-agnostic framework. Our results show significant improvement in small data sets and data efficiency in the larger data sets, underscoring the potential of our pretrain strategies that effectively leverage unlabeled data for accurate material property prediction.

Two-dimensional multiferroic material of metallic p-doped SnSe

Project description:Two-dimensional multiferroic materials have garnered broad interests attributed to their magnetoelectric properties and multifunctional applications. Multiferroic heterostructures have been realized, nevertheless, the direct coupling between ferroelectric and ferromagnetic order in a single material still remains challenging, especially for two-dimensional materials. Here, we develop a physical vapor deposition approach to synthesize two-dimensional p-doped SnSe. The local phase segregation of SnSe2 microdomains and accompanying interfacial charge transfer results in the emergence of degenerate semiconductor and metallic feature in SnSe. Intriguingly, the room-temperature ferrimagnetism has been demonstrated in two-dimensional p-doped SnSe with the Curie temperature approaching to ~337 K. Meanwhile, the ferroelectricity is maintained even under the depolarizing field introduced by SnSe2. The coexistence of ferrimagnetism and ferroelectricity in two-dimensional p-doped SnSe verifies its multiferroic feature. This work presents a significant advance for exploring the magnetoelectric coupling in two-dimensional limit and constructing high-performance logic devices to extend Moore’s law. 2D multiferroic materials have garnered broad interests due to their magnetoelectric properties and multifunctional applications. Here, the authors discover a multiferroic feature in physical vapor deposition synthesized 2D metallic p-doped SnSe.

Spatial heterogeneity as the structure feature for structure-property relationship of metallic glasses.

Project description:The mechanical properties of crystalline materials can be quantitatively described by crystal defects of solute atoms, dislocations, twins, and grain boundaries with the models of solid solution strengthening, Taylor strain hardening and Hall-Petch grain boundary strengthening. However, for metallic glasses, a well-defined structure feature which dominates the mechanical properties of the disordered materials is still missing. Here, we report that nanoscale spatial heterogeneity is the inherent structural feature of metallic glasses. It has an intrinsic correlation with the strength and deformation behavior. The strength and Young's modulus of metallic glasses can be defined by the function of the square root reciprocal of the characteristic length of the spatial heterogeneity. Moreover, the stretching exponent of time-dependent strain relaxation can be quantitatively described by the characteristic length. Our study provides compelling evidence that the spatial heterogeneity is a feasible structural indicator for portraying mechanical properties of metallic glasses.

Super-heavy electron material as metallic refrigerant for adiabatic demagnetization cooling.

Project description:Low-temperature refrigeration is of crucial importance in fundamental research of condensed matter physics, because the investigations of fascinating quantum phenomena, such as superconductivity, superfluidity, and quantum criticality, often require refrigeration down to very low temperatures. Currently, cryogenic refrigerators with (3)He gas are widely used for cooling below 1 K. However, usage of the gas has been increasingly difficult because of the current worldwide shortage. Therefore, it is important to consider alternative methods of refrigeration. We show that a new type of refrigerant, the super-heavy electron metal YbCo2Zn20, can be used for adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration, which does not require (3)He gas. This method has a number of advantages, including much better metallic thermal conductivity compared to the conventional insulating refrigerants. We also demonstrate that the cooling performance is optimized in Yb1-x Sc x Co2Zn20 by partial Sc substitution, with x ~ 0.19. The substitution induces chemical pressure that drives the materials to a zero-field quantum critical point. This leads to an additional enhancement of the magnetocaloric effect in low fields and low temperatures, enabling final temperatures well below 100 mK. This performance has, up to now, been restricted to insulators. For nearly a century, the same principle of using local magnetic moments has been applied for adiabatic demagnetization cooling. This study opens new possibilities of using itinerant magnetic moments for cryogen-free refrigeration.

Pseudodoping of a metallic two-dimensional material by the supporting substrate.

Project description:Charge transfers resulting from weak bondings between two-dimensional materials and the supporting substrates are often tacitly associated with their work function differences. In this context, two-dimensional materials could be normally doped at relatively low levels. Here, we demonstrate how even weak hybridization with substrates can lead to an apparent heavy doping, using the example of monolayer 1H-TaS2 grown on Au(111). Ab-initio calculations show that sizable changes in Fermi areas can arise, while the transferred charge between substrate and two-dimensional material is much smaller than the variation of Fermi areas suggests. This mechanism, which we refer to as pseudodoping, is associated with non-linear energy-dependent shifts of electronic spectra, which our scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments reveal for clean and defective TaS2 monolayer on Au(111). The influence of pseudodoping on the formation of many-body states in two-dimensional metallic materials is analyzed, shedding light on utilizing pseudodoping to control electronic phase diagrams.

Towards the Better: Intrinsic Property Amelioration in Bulk Metallic Glasses.

Project description:Tailoring the intrinsic length-scale effects in bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) via post-heat treatment necessitates a systematic analyzing strategy. Although various achievements were made in the past years to structurally enhance the properties of different BMG alloys, the influence of short-term sub-glass transition annealing on the relaxation kinetics is still not fully covered. Here, we aim for unraveling the connection between the physical, (thermo)mechanical and structural changes as a function of selected pre-annealing temperatures and time scales with an in-house developed Cu46Zr44Al8Hf2 based BMG alloy. The controlled formation of nanocrystals below 50 nm with homogenous distribution inside the matrix phase via thermal treatment increase the material's resistance to strain softening by almost an order of magnitude. The present work determines the design aspects of metallic glasses with enhanced mechanical properties via nanostructural modifications, while postulating a counter-argument to the intrinsic property degradation accounted for long-term annealing.

Modulation of Morphology and Optical Property of Multi-Metallic PdAuAg and PdAg Alloy Nanostructures.

Project description:In this work, the evolution of PdAg and PdAuAg alloy nanostructures is demonstrated on sapphire (0001) via the solid-state dewetting of multi-metallic thin films. Various surface configurations, size, and arrangements of bi- and tri-metallic alloy nanostructures are fabricated as a function of annealing temperature, annealing duration, film thickness, and deposition arrangements such as bi-layers (Pd/Ag), tri-layers (Pd/Au/Ag), and multi-layers (Pd/Au/Ag × 5). Specifically, the tri-layers film shows the gradual evolution of over-grown NPs, voids, wiggly nanostructures, and isolated PdAuAg alloy nanoparticles (NPs) along with the increased annealing temperature. In contrast, the multi-layers film with same thickness show the enhanced dewetting rate, which results in the formation of voids at relatively lower temperature, wider spacing, and structural regularity of alloy NPs at higher temperature. The dewetting enhancement is attributed to the increased number of interfaces and reduced individual layer thickness, which aid the inter-diffusion process at the initial stage. In addition, the time evolution of the Pd150 nm/Ag80 nm bi-layer films at constant temperature show the wiggly-connected and isolated PdAg alloy NPs. The overall evolution of alloy NPs is discussed based on the solid-state dewetting mechanism in conjunction with the diffusion, inter-diffusion, alloying, sublimation, Rayleigh instability, and surface energy minimization. Depending upon their surface morphologies, the bi- and tri-metallic alloy nanostructures exhibit the dynamic reflectance spectra, which show the formation of dipolar (above 700 nm) and quadrupolar resonance peaks (~ 380 nm) and wide dips in the visible region as correlated to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. An absorption dip is readily shifted from ~ 510 to ~ 475 nm along with the decreased average size of alloy nanostructures.

A Stretchable Pillararene-Containing Supramolecular Polymeric Material with Self-Healing Property.

Project description:Constructing polymeric materials with stretchable and self-healing properties arise increasing interest in the field of tissue engineering, wearable electronics and soft actuators. Herein, a new type of supramolecular cross-linker was constructed through host-guest interaction between pillar[5]arene functionalized acrylate and pyridinium functionalized acrylate, which could form supramolecular polymeric material via photo-polymerization of n-butyl acrylate (BA). Such material exhibited excellent tensile properties, with maximum tensile strength of 3.4 MPa and strain of 3000%, respectively. Moreover, this material can effectively dissipate energy with the energy absorption efficiency of 93%, which could be applied in the field of energy absorbing materials. In addition, the material showed self-healing property after cut and responded to competitive guest.

Material symmetry recognition and property prediction accomplished by crystal capsule representation.

Project description:Learning the global crystal symmetry and interpreting the equivariant information is crucial for accurately predicting material properties, yet remains to be fully accomplished by existing algorithms based on convolution networks. To overcome this challenge, here we develop a machine learning (ML) model, named symmetry-enhanced equivariance network (SEN), to build material representation with joint structure-chemical patterns, to encode important clusters embedded in the crystal structure, and to learn pattern equivariance in different scales via capsule transformers. Quantitative analyses of the intermediate matrices demonstrate that the intrinsic crystal symmetries and interactions between clusters have been exactly perceived by the SEN model and critically affect the prediction performances by reducing effective feature space. The mean absolute errors (MAEs) of 0.181 eV and 0.0161 eV/atom are obtained for predicting bandgap and formation energy in the MatBench dataset. The general and interpretable SEN model reveals the potential to design ML models by implicitly encoding feature relationship based on physical mechanisms.
