Rheological insights on the evolution of sonicated cellulose nanocrystal dispersions.

ABSTRACT: Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are promising biomaterials, but their tendency to agglomerate when dried limits their use in several applications. Ultrasonication is commonly used to disperse CNCs in water, bringing enough energy to the suspension to break agglomerates. While the optimized parameters for sonication are now well defined for small volumes of low concentration CNC suspensions, a deeper understanding of the influence of the dispersing process is needed to work with larger volumes, at higher concentrations. Herein, rheology is used to define the distribution and dispersion states upon ultrasonication of a 3.2 wt% CNC suspension. After considering the importance of the measurement sampling volume, the behavior of a more concentrated suspension (6.4 wt%) is examined and compared with a never-dried suspension of the same concentration to validate the dispersion state.

Polymer induced liquid crystal phase behavior of cellulose nanocrystal dispersions.

Project description:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are a promising bio-based material that has attracted significant attention in the fabrication of functional hybrid materials. The rod-like shape and negative surface charge of CNCs enable their rich colloidal behavior, such as a liquid crystalline phase and hydrogel formation that can be mediated by different additives. This study investigates the effect of depletion-induced attraction in the presence of non-absorbing polyethylene glycol (PEG) of different molecular weights in CNC aqueous dispersions, where the polymer molecules deplete the space around particles, apply osmotic pressure and drive the phase transition. Polarized light microscopy (PLM), rheology, small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) are used to characterize the phase behavior over a time period of one month. In our results, pure CNC dispersion shows three typical liquid crystal shear rheology regimes and cholesteric self-assembly behavior. Tactoid nucleation, growth and coalescence are observed microscopically, and eventually the dispersion presents macroscopic phase separation. PEG with lower molecular weight induces weak attractive depletion forces. Tactoid growth is limited, and the whole system turns into a fully nematic phase macroscopically. With PEG of higher molecular weight, attractive depletion force becomes predominant, thus CNC self-assembly is inhibited and nematic hydrogel formation is triggered. Overall, we demonstrate that depletion induced attraction forces by the addition of PEG enable precise tuning of CNC self-assembly and phase behavior with controllable mechanical strength and optical activity. These findings deepen our fundamental understanding of cellulose nanocrystals and advance their application in colloidal systems and nanomaterials.

Characterization of Size and Aggregation for Cellulose Nanocrystal Dispersions Separated by Asymmetrical-Flow Field-Flow Fractionation.

Project description:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) derived from various types of cellulose biomass have significant potential for applications that take advantage of their availability from renewable natural resources and their high mechanical strength, biocompatibility and ease of modification. However, their high polydispersity and irregular rod-like shape present challenges for the quantitative dimensional determinations that are required for quality control of CNC production processes. Here we have fractionated a CNC certified reference material using a previously reported asymmetrical-flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) method and characterized selected fractions by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy. This work was aimed at addressing discrepancies in length between fractionated and unfractionated CNC and obtaining less polydisperse samples with fewer aggregates to facilitate microscopy dimensional measurements. The results demonstrate that early fractions obtained from an analytical scale AF4 separation contain predominantly individual CNCs. The number of laterally aggregated "dimers" and clusters containing 3 or more particles increases with increasing fraction number. Size analysis of individual particles by AFM for the early fractions demonstrates that the measured CNC length increases with increasing fraction number, in good agreement with the rod length calculated from the AF4 multi-angle light scattering data. The ability to minimize aggregation and polydispersity for CNC samples has important implications for correlating data from different sizing methods.

Flexible Photonic Cellulose Nanocrystal Films.

The combination of tunable flexibility and iridescence can dramatically expand CNC coating and film barrier capabilities for paints and coating applications, sustainable consumer packaging products, as well as effective templates for photonic and optoelectronic materials and structures.

Aligning cellulose nanofibril dispersions for tougher fibers.

Project description:Nanocomposite materials made from cellulose show a great potential as future high-performance and sustainable materials. We show how high aspect ratio cellulose nanofibrils can be efficiently aligned in extrusion to fibers, leading to increased modulus of toughness (area under the stress-strain curve), Young's modulus, and yield strength by increasing the extrusion capillary length, decreasing its diameter, and increasing the flow rate. The materials showed significant property combinations, manifesting as high modulus of toughness (~28-31 MJ/m3) vs. high stiffness (~19-20 GPa), and vs. high yield strength (~130-150 MPa). Wide angle X-ray scattering confirmed that the enhanced mechanical properties directly correlated with increased alignment. The achieved moduli of toughness are approximately double or more when compared to values reported in the literature for corresponding strength and stiffness. Our results highlight a possibly general pathway that can be integrated to gel-spinning process, suggesting the hypothesis that that high stiffness, strength and toughness can be achieved simultaneously, if the alignment is induced while the CNF are in the free-flowing state during the extrusion step by shear at relatively low concentration and in pure water, after which they can be coagulated.

Digital color in cellulose nanocrystal films.

Project description:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) form chiral nematic phases in aqueous suspensions that can be preserved upon evaporation of water. The resulting films show an intense directional coloration determined by their microstructure. Here, microreflection experiments correlated with analysis of the helicoidal nanostructure of the films reveal that the iridescent colors and the ordering of the individual nematic layers are strongly dependent on the polydispersity of the size distribution of the CNCs. We show how this affects the self-assembly process, and hence multidomain color formation in such bioinspired structural films.

Rheological Response of Polylactic Acid Dispersions in Water with Xanthan Gum.

Project description:In this work, the rheological behavior of stable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) dispersions in water, intended for coating applications, was investigated. The newly prepared dispersion consists of PLA particles with an average diameter of 222 ± 2 nm based on dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses, at concentrations varying in the 5-22 wt % range. Xanthan gum (XG), a bacterial polysaccharide, was used as a thickening agent to modulate the viscosity of the formulations. The rheological properties of the PLA dispersions with different XG and PLA contents were studied in steady shear, amplitude sweep, and frequency sweep experiments. Under steady shear conditions, the viscosity of all the formulations showed a shear-thinning behavior similar to XG solutions in the whole investigated 1-1000 s-1 range, with values dependent on both PLA particles and XG concentrations. Amplitude and frequency sweep data revealed a weak-gel behavior except in the case of the most diluted sample, with moduli dependent on both PLA and XG contents. A unified scaling parameter was identified in the volume fraction (ϕ) of the PLA particles, calculated by considering the dependence of the continuous phase density on the XG concentration. Accordingly, a master curve at different volume fractions was built using the time-concentration-superposition approach. The master curve describes the rheological response of the system over a wider frequency window than the experimentally accessible one and reveals the presence of a superimposed β relaxation process in the high-frequency region.

Effect of Acetylation of Two Cellulose Nanocrystal Polymorphs on Processibility and Physical Properties of Polylactide/Cellulose Nanocrystal Composite Film.

Project description:Polylactide (PLA) has become a popular alternative for petroleum-based plastics to reduce environmental pollution. The broader application of PLA is hampered by its brittle nature and incompatibility with the reinforcement phase. The aim of our work was to improve the ductility and compatibility of PLA composite film and investigate the mechanism by which nanocellulose enhances PLA polymer. Here, we present a robust PLA/nanocellulose hybrid film. Two different allomorphic cellulose nanocrystals (CNC-I and CNC-III) and their acetylated products (ACNC-I and ACNC-III) were used to realize better compatibility and mechanical performance in a hydrophobic PLA matrix. The tensile stress of the composite films with 3% ACNC-I and ACNC-III increased by 41.55% and 27.22% compared to pure PLA film, respectively. Compared to the CNC-I or CNC-III enhanced PLA composite films, the tensile stress of the films increased by 45.05% with 1% ACNC-I and 56.15% with 1% ACNC-III. In addition, PLA composite films with ACNCs showed better ductility and compatibility because the composite fracture gradually transitioned to a ductile fracture during the stretching process. As a result, ACNC-I and ACNC-III were found to be excellent reinforcing agents for the enhancement of the properties of polylactide composite film, and the replacement some petrochemical plastics with PLA composites would be very promising in actual life.

Cellulose Nanocrystal and Water-Soluble Cellulose Derivative Based Electromechanical Bending Actuators.

Project description:This study reports a versatile method for the development of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and water-soluble cellulose derivatives (methyl cellulose (MC), hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC)) films comprising the ionic liquid (IL) 2-hydroxy-ethyl-trimethylammonium dihydrogen phosphate ([Ch][DHP]) for actuator fabrication. The influence of the IL content on the morphology and physico-chemical properties of free-standing composite films was evaluated. Independently of the cellulose derivative, the ductility of the films increases upon [Ch][DHP] incorporation to yield elongation at break values of nearly 15%. An increase on the electrical conductivity as a result of the IL incorporation into cellulosic matrices is found. The actuator performance of composites was evaluated, NaCMC/[Ch][DHP] showing the maximum displacement along the x-axis of 9 mm at 8 Vpp. Based on the obtained high electromechanical actuation performance, together with their simple processability and renewable nature, the materials fabricated here represent a step forward in the development of sustainable soft actuators of high practical relevance.

Carbon Nanotube and Cellulose Nanocrystal Hybrid Films.

Project description:The use of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) in high performance coatings is attractive for micro-scale structures or device fabrication due to the anisotropic geometry, however CNC are insulating materials. Carbon nanotubes (CNT) are also rod-shaped nanomaterials that display high mechanical strength and electrical conductivity. The hydrophobic regions of surface-modified CNC can interact with hydrophobic CNT and aid in association between the two anisotropic nanomaterials. The long-range electrostatic repulsion of CNC plays a role in forming a stable CNT and CNC mixture dispersion in water, which is integral to forming a uniform hybrid film. At concentrations favorable for film formation, the multiwalled nanotubes + CNC mixture dispersion shows cellular network formation, indicating local phase separation, while the single-walled nanotube + CNC mixture dispersion shows schlieren texture, indicating liquid crystal mixture formation. Conductive CNT + CNC hybrid films (5-20 μm thick) were cast on glass microscope slides with and without shear by blade coating. The CNT + CNC hybrid films electrical conductivity increased with increasing CNT loadings and some anisotropy was observed with the sheared hybrid films, although to a lesser extent than what was anticipated. Percolation models were applied to model the hybrid film conductivity and correlate with the hybrid film microstructure.

Recyclable organic solar cells on cellulose nanocrystal substrates.

Project description:Solar energy is potentially the largest source of renewable energy at our disposal, but significant advances are required to make photovoltaic technologies economically viable and, from a life-cycle perspective, environmentally friendly, and consequently scalable. Cellulose nanomaterials are emerging high-value nanoparticles extracted from plants that are abundant, renewable, and sustainable. Here, we report on the first demonstration of efficient polymer solar cells fabricated on optically transparent cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) substrates. The solar cells fabricated on the CNC substrates display good rectification in the dark and reach a power conversion efficiency of 2.7%. In addition, we demonstrate that these solar cells can be easily separated and recycled into their major components using low-energy processes at room temperature, opening the door for a truly recyclable solar cell technology. Efficient and easily recyclable organic solar cells on CNC substrates are expected to be an attractive technology for sustainable, scalable, and environmentally-friendly energy production.
