Bull and bear markets during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused severe disruption worldwide. We analyze the aggregate U.S. stock market during this period, including implications for both short and long-horizon investors. We identify bull and bear market regimes including their bull correction and bear rally components, demonstrate our model's performance in capturing periods of significant regime change, and provide weekly forecasts that improve risk management and investment decisions. An investment strategy that uses out-of-sample forecasts for market states outperforms a buy and hold strategy during the pandemic by a wide margin, both in terms of annualized returns and Sharpe ratios.

Connectedness of energy markets around the world during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Project description:This paper studies the connectedness among energy equity indices of oil-exporting and oil-importing countries around the world. For each country, we construct time-varying measures of how much shocks this country transmits to other countries and how much shocks this country receives from other countries. We analyze the network of countries and find that, on average, oil-exporting countries are mainly transmitting shocks, and oil-importing countries are mainly receiving shocks. Furthermore, we use panel data regressions to evaluate whether the connectedness among countries is influenced by economic sentiment, uncertainty, and the global COVID-19 pandemic. We find that the connectedness among countries increases significantly in periods of uncertainty, low economic sentiment, and COVID-19 problems. This implies that diversification benefits across countries are severely reduced exactly during crises, that is, during the times when diversification benefits are most important.

Information dissemination across global markets during the spread of COVID-19 pandemic☆

Project description:This study examines the information dissemination process across 25 major global market indices during the times of COVID-19 pandemic spread. The results suggest that the information from non-systematic sources contributed to the price decline and increased volatility. In contrast, the systematic information lowered the volatility and facilitated the recovery process towards more stable markets. These results have important implications for policymakers and regulators in the development of efficient markets.

International currency markets and the COVID‐19 pandemic

Project description:Abstract We find that quantifying COVID‐19 pandemic shocks is critical to understanding international currency market returns. Scaled by population, shocks from between‐country differences in the number of weekly COVID‐19 deaths are informative in predicting exchange rate returns. Following Alfaro et al. (2020), we estimate the expected number of COVID‐19 deaths based on an exponential model and use it to construct two pandemic shocks that measure the unanticipated number of deaths on a weekly basis and the time‐varying correction of forecast provided new information from the previous week. We document negative impacts of COVID‐19 propagation on currency returns. In addition, we find that the government response, in particular fiscal and monetary stimulus packages, can help mitigate negative effects of COVID‐19 on currency returns. Our findings are robust to country‐specific pandemic measures, window sizes of the exponential model, and the choice of forecast model.

Forecasting the U.S. oil markets based on social media information during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Project description:Accurate oil market forecasting plays an important role in the theory and application of oil supply chain management for profit maximization and risk minimization. However, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has compelled governments worldwide to impose restrictions, consequently forcing the closure of most social and economic activities. The latter leads to the volatility of the oil markets and poses a huge challenge to oil market forecasting. Fortunately, the social media information can finely reflect oil market factors and exogenous factors, such as conflicts and political instability. Accordingly, this study collected vast online oil news and used convolutional neural network to extract relevant information automatically. Oil markets are divided into four categories: oil price, oil production, oil consumption, and oil inventory. A total of 16,794; 9,139; 8,314; and 8,548 news headlines were collected in four respective cases. Experimental results indicate that social media information contributes to the forecasting of oil price, oil production and oil consumption. The mean absolute percentage errors are respectively 0.0717, 0.0144 and 0.0168 for the oil price, production, and consumption prediction during the COVID-19 pandemic. Marketers must consider the impact of social media information on the oil or similar markets, especially during the COVID-19 outbreak.

How have the dependence structures between stock markets and economic factors changed during the COVID-19 pandemic?☆

Project description:This study investigates how the dependence structures between stock markets and economic factors have changed during the COVID-19 pandemic using the dynamic model averaging approach. A series of economic factors such as commodity markets, cryptocurrency, monetary policy, international capital flows, and market uncertainty indices are considered. We find that the importance of economic variables and the sign and size of their coefficients are significantly different from those before the COVID-19 pandemic. The stock markets are most influenced by economic factors during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Willingness to Bear Economic Costs in the Fight Against the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Project description:The COVID-19 pandemic has created a situation in which people have to choose between economic and health values. This raises the question of what psychological mechanisms determine people's willingness to bear economic costs to protect health? To answer this question, we examined whether such willingness is better described by compensatory or lexicographic models of decision making in situations involving risk or uncertainty. We compared decisions regarding COVID-19 and occupational diseases to establish a pandemic-independent baseline and to determine whether the mechanisms behind the trade-offs are the same in both cases. Additionally, we tested whether people's willingness to accept economic costs is related to psychological factors such as fear, feeling of control, declared knowledge about the COVID-19 pandemic, predictions concerning the expected length of the pandemic, and perceived effectiveness of actions taken to fight the coronavirus. In total, 354 Polish participants from Prolific Academic took part in this study. The results were consistent with the view that decisions are made primarily to protect sacred values and are therefore not based on compensatory models. In line with this view, participants were sensitive neither to the risk vs. uncertainty manipulation nor to the perceived effectiveness of the lockdown. Instead, their behavior was congruent with lexicographic models in which the protection of health and in particular the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic appeared to be the most important dimension, and the single criterion to be used in decision making.

Sectoral analysis of electricity consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic: Evidence for unregulated and regulated markets in Colombia.

Project description:We conduct a sectoral analysis of electricity consumption during the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic for the primary sectors that make up Colombia's unregulated and regulated markets. Applying a model of seemingly unrelated regression equations to examine data between February 2015 and May 2021, we evidence the recomposition of electricity consumption related to mandatory preventive isolation during the pandemic. Average consumption in the residential sector increased by 16.9% as working from home became prevalent. In contrast, unregulated market sectors subjected to quarantines presented a significant decrease in consumption, up to 32% in the financial sector. While industries that were not subjected to mandatory confinement, such as health, food (agriculture), and water supply, had no significant effect. Our results are relevant for informing demand forecasts and planning network expansions to guarantee the reliability of the supply as pandemic practices such as working from home become permanent.
