Light-Driven Waste-To-Value Upcycling: Bio-Based Polyols and Polyurethanes from the Photo-Oxygenation of Cardanols.

ABSTRACT: The upcycling of waste biomass into valuable materials by resource-efficient chemical transformations is a prime objective for sustainable chemistry. This approach is demonstrated in a straightforward light-driven synthesis of polyols and polyurethane foams from the multi-ton waste products of cashew nut processing. The photo-oxygenation of cardanol from nutshell oil results in the formation of synthetically versatile hydroperoxides. The choice of the workup method (i. e., reduction, hydrogenation, epoxidation) enables access to a diverse range of alcohols with tunable alkene and OH functions. Condensation with isocyanates to give rigid polyurethane foams provides a resource-efficient waste-to-value chain that benefits from the availability of cardanol and installation of OH groups from aerial O₂ .

Fully Bio-Based Thermosetting Polyurethanes from Bio-Based Polyols and Isocyanates.

Project description:The trend towards the utilization of bioresources for the manufacturing of polymers has led industry players to bring to the market new monomers. In this work, we studied 3 polyisocyanates and 2 polyols with high renewable carbon contents, namely L-lysine ethyl ester diisocyanate (LDI), pentamethylene-diisocyanate (PDI) isocyanurate trimer, and hexamethylene-diisocyanate (HDI) allophanate as the isocyanates, as well as castor oil and polypropanediol as the polyols. These monomers are commercially available at a large scale and were used in direct formulations or used as prepolymers. Thermosetting polymers with Tg values ranging from -41 to +21 °C and thermal stabilities of up to 300 °C were obtained, and the polymerization was studied using NMR, DSC, and rheology. Cured materials were also characterized using FTIR, DMA, gel content, and swelling index determinations. These high bio-based content materials can successfully be obtained and could be used as alternatives to petro-based materials.

Photo splitting of bio-polyols and sugars to methanol and syngas.

Project description:Methanol is a clean liquid energy carrier of sunshine and a key platform chemical for the synthesis of olefins and aromatics. Herein, we report the conversion of biomass-derived polyols and sugars into methanol and syngas (CO+H2) via UV light irradiation under room temperature, and the bio-syngas can be further used for the synthesis of methanol. The cellulose and even raw wood sawdust could be converted into methanol or syngas after hydrogenolysis or hydrolysis pretreatment. We find Cu dispersed on titanium oxide nanorod (TNR) rich in defects is effective for the selective C-C bond cleavage to methanol. Methanol is obtained from glycerol with a co-production of H2. A syngas with CO selectivity up to 90% in the gas phase is obtained via controlling the energy band structure of Cu/TNR.

Cascade degradation and upcycling of polystyrene waste to high-value chemicals.

Project description:Plastic waste represents one of the most urgent environmental challenges facing humankind. Upcycling has been proposed to solve the low profitability and high market sensitivity of known recycling methods. Existing upcycling methods operate under energy-intense conditions and use precious-metal catalysts, but produce low-value oligomers, monomers, and common aromatics. Herein, we report a tandem degradation-upcycling strategy to exploit high-value chemicals from polystyrene (PS) waste with high selectivity. We first degrade PS waste to aromatics using ultraviolet (UV) light and then valorize the intermediate to diphenylmethane. Low-cost AlCl3 catalyzes both the reactions of degradation and upcycling at ambient temperatures under atmospheric pressure. The degraded intermediates can advantageously serve as solvents for processing the solid plastic wastes, forming a self-sustainable circuitry. The low-value-input and high-value-output approach is thus substantially more sustainable and economically viable than conventional thermal processes, which operate at high-temperature, high-pressure conditions and use precious-metal catalysts, but produce low-value oligomers, monomers, and common aromatics. The cascade strategy is resilient to impurities from plastic waste streams and is generalizable to other high-value chemicals (e.g., benzophenone, 1,2-diphenylethane, and 4-phenyl-4-oxo butyric acid). The upcycling to diphenylmethane was tested at 1-kg laboratory scale and attested by industrial-scale techno-economic analysis, demonstrating sustainability and economic viability without government subsidies or tax credits.

Bio-upcycling of cheese whey: Transforming waste into raw materials for biofuels and animal feed.

Project description:Cheese whey (CW), by-product of cheese production, has potential as a valuable resource due to its nutritional composition. Although options for CW degradation have been explored, a biological treatment with black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) has not been reported. This study evaluated the growth and composition of BSFL in four experimental diets with CW under different conditions. Results show that the use of CW allows larval development and weight gain, also, the conversion into larval biomass was up to 0.215. Diets ED3 (fresh CW, 38 °C) and ED4 (fresh CW, room temperature) allowed higher weight accumulation (final weight up to 0.285 g); the highest fat accumulation (12 % higher than control) was observed in ED3 (up to 45.57 %), which had less protein. Moreover, higher amounts of saturated fatty acids are generated. This study highlights the importance of an appropriate pretreatment designed for a specific waste to control desired by-products.

Shape memory polyurethanes crosslinked with castor oil-based multifunctional polyols.

Project description:As both the industry and academia become more focused on biomass-based smart materials, they are attracting a lot of attention. There has been a significant effort in the field of polyurethane (PU) synthesis to replace polyols used in synthesis with bio-derived polyols. Bio-derived polyols have limited application potential for bio-based PU due to their low functionality. Here, we reported castor oil (CO) based multifunctional polyols prepared by grafting thiols such as 1-mercaptoethanol or α-thioglycerol via a facile thiol-ene click reaction method (coded as COM and COT, respectively). Subsequently, bio-based shape memory polyurethanes (SMPU) crosslinked with prepared polyols were synthesized using a 2-step prepolymer method. By confirming the functionality of the synthesized polyols, it was determined that COT has an OH value of 380 mg KOH/g, which is approximately three times that of CO. The successful synthesis of SMPUs was confirmed through chemical structural analysis. It was also proved that the phase separation between the soft and hard segments was limited due to the increase in crosslinking density. As compared to SMPU crosslinked with CO, the mechanical strength of SMPU crosslinked with COT was improved by 80%, while the elongation was decreased by about 26%. As a result of shape memory behavior analysis, it was confirmed that the outstanding SMPU can be synthesized using CO-based multifunctional polyols.

High Functionality Bio-Polyols from Tall Oil and Rigid Polyurethane Foams Formulated Solely Using Bio-Polyols.

Project description:High-quality rigid polyurethane (PU) foam thermal insulation material has been developed solely using bio-polyols synthesized from second-generation bio-based feedstock. High functionality bio-polyols were synthesized from cellulose production side stream-tall oil fatty acids by oxirane ring-opening as well as esterification reactions with different polyfunctional alcohols, such as diethylene glycol, trimethylolpropane, triethanolamine, and diethanolamine. Four different high functionality bio-polyols were combined with bio-polyol obtained from tall oil esterification with triethanolamine to develop rigid PU foam formulations applicable as thermal insulation material. The developed formulations were optimized using response surface modeling to find optimal bio-polyol and physical blowing agent: c-pentane content. The optimized bio-based rigid PU foam formulations delivered comparable thermal insulation properties to the petro-chemical alternative.

Converting textile waste into value-added chemicals: An integrated bio-refinery process.

Project description:The rate of textile waste generation worldwide has increased dramatically due to a rise in clothing consumption and production. Here, conversion of cotton-based, colored cotton-based, and blended cotton-polyethylene terephthalate (PET) textile waste materials into value-added chemicals (bioethanol, sorbitol, lactic acid, terephthalic acid (TPA), and ethylene glycol (EG)) via enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation was investigated. In order to enhance the efficiency of enzymatic saccharification, effective pretreatment methods for each type of textile waste were developed, respectively. A high glucose yield of 99.1% was obtained from white cotton-based textile waste after NaOH pretreatment. Furthermore, the digestibility of the cellulose in colored cotton-based textile wastes was increased 1.38-1.75 times because of the removal of dye materials by HPAC-NaOH pretreatment. The blended cotton-PET samples showed good hydrolysis efficiency following PET removal via NaOH-ethanol pretreatment, with a glucose yield of 92.49%. The sugar content produced via enzymatic hydrolysis was then converted into key platform chemicals (bioethanol, sorbitol, and lactic acid) via fermentation or hydrogenation. The maximum ethanol yield was achieved with the white T-shirt sample (537 mL/kg substrate), which was 3.2, 2.1, and 2.6 times higher than those obtained with rice straw, pine wood, and oak wood, respectively. Glucose was selectively converted into sorbitol and LA at a yield of 70% and 83.67%, respectively. TPA and EG were produced from blended cotton-PET via NaOH-ethanol pretreatment. The integrated biorefinery process proposed here demonstrates significant potential for valorization of textile waste.

Fast-Responding Bio-Based Shape Memory Thermoplastic Polyurethanes.

Project description:Novel fast response shape-memory polyurethanes were prepared from bio-based polyols, diphenyl methane diisocyanate and butane diol for the first time. The bio-based polyester polyols were synthesized from 9-hydroxynonanoic acid, a product obtained by ozonolysis of fatty acids extracted from soy oil and castor oil. The morphology of polyurethanes was investigated by synchrotron ultra-small angle X-ray scattering, which revealed the inter-domain spacing between the hard and soft phases, the degree of phase separation, and the level of intermixing between the hard and soft phases. We also conducted thorough investigations of the thermal, mechanical, and dielectric properties of the polyurethanes, and found that high crystallization rate of the soft segment gives these polyurethanes unique properties suitable for shape-memory applications, such as adjustable transition temperatures, high degree of elastic elongations, and good mechanical strength. These materials are also potentially biodegradable and biocompatible, therefore suitable for biomedical and environmental applications.

High Bio-Content Thermoplastic Polyurethanes from Azelaic Acid.

Project description:To realize the commercialization of sustainable materials, new polymers must be generated and systematically evaluated for material characteristics and end-of-life treatment. Polyester polyols made from renewable monomers have found limited adoption in thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) applications, and their broad adoption in manufacturing may be possible with a more detailed understanding of their structure and properties. To this end, we prepared a series of bio-based crystalline and amorphous polyester polyols utilizing azelaic acid and varying branched or non-branched diols. The prepared polyols showed viscosities in the range of 504-781 cP at 70 °C, with resulting TPUs that displayed excellent thermal and mechanical properties. TPUs prepared from crystalline azelate polyester polyol exhibited excellent mechanical properties compared to TPUs prepared from amorphous polyols. These were used to demonstrate prototype products, such as watch bands and cup-shaped forms. Importantly, the prepared TPUs had up to 85% bio-carbon content. Studies such as these will be important for the development of renewable materials that display mechanical properties suitable for commercially viable, sustainable products.

Microbial Upcycling of Waste PET to Adipic Acid.

Project description:Microorganisms can be genetically engineered to transform abundant waste feedstocks into value-added small molecules that would otherwise be manufactured from diminishing fossil resources. Herein, we report the first one-pot bio-upcycling of PET plastic waste into the prolific platform petrochemical and nylon precursor adipic acid in the bacterium Escherichia coli. Optimizing heterologous gene expression and enzyme activity enabled increased flux through the de novo pathway, and immobilization of whole cells in alginate hydrogels increased the stability of the rate-limiting enoate reductase BcER. The pathway enzymes were also interfaced with hydrogen gas generated by engineered E. coli DD-2 in combination with a biocompatible Pd catalyst to enable adipic acid synthesis from metabolic cis,cis-muconic acid. Together, these optimizations resulted in a one-pot conversion to adipic acid from terephthalic acid, including terephthalate samples isolated from industrial PET waste and a post-consumer plastic bottle.
