Holistic View on Materials Development: Water Electrolysis as a Case Study.

ABSTRACT: In view of rising ecological awareness, materials development is primarily aimed at improving the performance and efficiency of innovative and more elaborate materials. However, a materials performance figure of merit should include essential aspects of materials: environmental impact, economic constraints, technical feasibility, etc. Thus, we promote the inclusion of sustainability criteria already during the materials design process. With such a holistic design approach, new products may be more likely to meet the circular economy requirements than when traditional development strategies are pursued. Using catalysts for water electrolysis as an example, we present a modelling method based on experimental data to holistically evaluate processes.

Effect of platinum electrode materials and electrolysis processes on the preparation of acidic electrolyzed oxidizing water and slightly acidic electrolyzed water.

Project description:Electrolyzed oxidizing water (EOW) can be divided into acidic electrolyzed oxidizing water (AEOW) and slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW). AEOW has the characteristics of low pH (pH < 2.7) and high oxidation-reduction potential (ORP > 1100 mV). SAEW is slightly acidic (pH = 5-6) and has an ORP of 700-900 mV. AEOW and SAEW both have a certain amount of active chlorine content (ACC), so they have the characteristics of broad spectrum, rapidity and high efficiency of sterilization. At present, there is little systematic research on AEOW and SAEW preparation. However, it is very important to study the preparation process, including electrode material and electrolytic process. First, the effects of Pt electrodes with different thermal decomposition temperatures on AEOW's pH, ORP and ACC values were investigated in detail. Next, for the SAEW preparation, the process is based on the preparation of AEOW by ion-exchange membrane electrolysis, reasonably mixing the electrolyzed cathode and anode solution. The effects of technological conditions such as electrolysis time, current density and electrolyte concentration have been systematically studied, and it is expected to get SAEW with a pH value slightly less than 7, a higher ORP value and a certain amount of ACC.

Role of water structure in alkaline water electrolysis.

Project description:Herein, with the help of experimental and first-principles density functional theory (DFT)-based studies, we have shown that structural changes in the water coordination in electrolytes having high alkalinity can be a possible reason for the reduced catalytic activity of platinum (Pt) in high pH. Studies with polycrystalline Pt electrodes indicate that electrocatalytic HER activity reduces in terms of high overpotential required, high Tafel slope, and high charge transfer resistances in concentrated aqueous alkaline electrolytes (say 6 M KOH) in comparison to that in low alkaline electrolytes (say 0.1 M KOH), irrespective of the counter cations (Na+, K+, or Rb+) present. The changes in the water structure of bulk electrolytes as well as that in electrode-electrolyte interface are studied. The results are compared with DFT-based analysis, and the study can pave new directions in studying the HER process in terms of the water structure near the electrode-electrolyte interface.

Highly energetic phenomena in water electrolysis.

Project description:Water electrolysis performed in microsystems with a fast change of voltage polarity produces optically invisible nanobubbles containing H2 and O2 gases. In this form the gases are able to the reverse reaction of water formation. Here we report extreme phenomena observed in a millimeter-sized open system. Under a frequency of driving pulses above 100 kHz the process is accompanied by clicking sounds repeated every 50 ms or so. Fast video reveals that synchronously with the click a bubble is growing between the electrodes which reaches a size of 300 μm in 50 μs. Detailed dynamics of the system is monitored by means of a vibrometer by observing a piece of silicon floating above the electrodes. The energy of a single event is estimated as 0.3 μJ and a significant part of this energy is transformed into mechanical work moving the piece. The observations are explained by the combustion of hydrogen and oxygen mixture in the initial bubble with a diameter of about 40 μm. Unusual combustion mechanism supporting spontaneous ignition at room temperature is responsible for the process. The observed effect demonstrates a principal possibility to build a microscopic internal combustion engine.

Definition and Contextual Factors of Nursing Home Residents' Mobility in a Holistic View: A Delphi Study.

Project description:Background and objectivesCurrent definitions of older adults' mobility do not cover the full range of influencing factors and do not consider nursing home residents. The present study reports expert ratings from a Delphi study regarding factors influencing the mobility of long-term nursing home residents.Research design and methodsWe invited 129 professionals with expertise in a field relevant to research on mobility in older adults such as health care, medicine, or human movement science to participate in a Delphi study comprising 3 rounds of online questionnaires. Up to 40 experts participated in each round. In the first round, we used open-ended questions to solicit possible definitions, contextual factors, and assessment tools. In the second round, the participants used Likert scales (1-10) to rate their suitability. In the final round, we presented a definition based on consensus as well as the top-rated contextual factors and assessment tools from the first 2 rounds for a final rating of agreement.ResultsThe experts showed broad agreement on the final version of the mobility definition, with 8.9 ± 1.4 (mean ± standard deviation) out of 10 points. The experts also showed broad consensus on the selected contextual factors, with 8.4 ± 1.8 points to 8.9 ± 1.2 points (out of 10 points). This was also the case for the top 3 assessment tools selected from results of previous rounds, which showed an agreement of 7 or more points (out of 10 points) by 81.6% to 100% of all experts in the different categories.Discussion and implicationsGiven that an interdisciplinary group of experts considered various hitherto neglected contextual factors as relevant, the Delphi survey and its results imply the need for an updated interdisciplinary and holistic understanding of mobility in nursing home residents and can provide a basis for putting it into practice.

Bifunctional PdMoPt trimetallene boosts alcohol-water electrolysis.

Project description:Substituting oxygen evolution with alcohol oxidation is crucial for enhancing the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at low voltages. However, the development of high-performance bifunctional catalysts remains a challenge. In this study, an ultrathin and porous PdMoPt trimetallene is developed using a wet-chemical strategy. The synergetic effect between alloying metals regulates the adsorption energy of reaction intermediates, resulting in exceptional activity and stability for the electrooxidation of various alcohols. Specifically, the mass activity of PdMoPt trimetallene toward the electrooxidation of methanol, ethylene glycol, and glycerol reaches 6.13, 5.5, and 4.37 A mgPd+Pt -1, respectively. Moreover, the catalyst demonstrates outstanding HER activity, requiring only a 39 mV overpotential to achieve 10 mA cm-2. By employing PdMoPt trimetallene as both the anode and cathode catalyst, we established an alcohol-water hybrid electrolysis system, significantly reducing the voltage requirements for hydrogen production. This work presents a promising avenue for the development of bifunctional catalysts for energy-efficient hydrogen production.

Remanufacturing Perovskite Solar Cells and Modules-A Holistic Case Study.

Project description:While perovskite photovoltaic (PV) devices are on the verge of commercialization, promising methods to recycle or remanufacture fully encapsulated perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and modules are still missing. Through a detailed life-cycle assessment shown in this work, we identify that the majority of the greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by re-using the glass substrate and parts of the PV cells. Based on these analytical findings, we develop a novel thermally assisted mechanochemical approach to remove the encapsulants, the electrode, and the perovskite absorber, allowing reuse of most of the device constituents for remanufacturing PSCs, which recovered nearly 90% of their initial performance. Notably, this is the first experimental demonstration of remanufacturing PSCs with an encapsulant and an edge-seal, which are necessary for commercial perovskite solar modules. This approach distinguishes itself from the "traditional" recycling methods previously demonstrated in perovskite literature by allowing direct reuse of bulk materials with high environmental impact. Thus, such a remanufacturing strategy becomes even more favorable than recycling, and it allows us to save up to 33% of the module's global warming potential. Remarkably, this process most likely can be universally applied to other PSC architectures, particularly n-i-p-based architectures that rely on inorganic metal oxide layers deposited on glass substrates. Finally, we demonstrate that the CO2-footprint of these remanufactured devices can become less than 30 g/kWh, which is the value for state-of-the-art c-Si PV modules, and can even reach 15 g/kWh assuming a similar lifetime.

Holistic View on the Structure of Immune Response: Petri Net Model.

Project description:The simulation of immune response is a challenging task because quantitative data are scarce. Quantitative theoretical models either focus on specific cell-cell interactions or have to make assumptions about parameters. The broad variation of, e.g., the dimensions and abundance between lymph nodes as well as between individual patients hampers conclusive quantitative modeling. No theoretical model has been established representing a consensus on the set of major cellular processes involved in the immune response. In this paper, we apply the Petri net formalism to construct a semi-quantitative mathematical model of the lymph nodes. The model covers the major cellular processes of immune response and fulfills the formal requirements of Petri net models. The intention is to develop a model taking into account the viewpoints of experienced pathologists and computer scientists in the field of systems biology. In order to verify formal requirements, we discuss invariant properties and apply the asynchronous firing rule of a place/transition net. Twenty-five transition invariants cover the model, and each is assigned to a functional mode of the immune response. In simulations, the Petri net model describes the dynamic modes of the immune response, its adaption to antigens, and its loss of memory.

Polybenzimidazole-Reinforced Terphenylene Anion Exchange Water Electrolysis Membranes.

Project description:Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) for hydrogen production combines the advantages of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis and alkaline water electrolysis. Several strategies have been adopted to improve the performance of AEMWE and to obtain membranes with high hydroxide ion conductivity, low gas permeation, and high durability. In this work AEMs reinforced with poly[2,2'-(p-oxydiphenylene)-5,5'-benzimidazole] (PBIO) polymer fibres have been developed. A fibre web of PBIO prepared by electrospinning was impregnated into the poly(terphenylene) mTPN ionomer. The membranes are strengthened by the formation of a strong surface interaction between the reinforcement and the ionomer and by the expansion of the reinforcement over the membrane thickness. The hydroxide ion conductivity, thermal stability, dimensional swelling, mechanical properties, and hydrogen crossover of the reinforced membranes were compared with the characteristics of the non-reinforced counterpart. The incorporation of PBIO nanofibre reinforcement into the membrane reduced hydrogen crossover and improved tensile properties, without affecting hydroxide conductivity. PBIO-reinforced mTPN membrane was assessed in a PGM-free 5 cm2 AEMWE single cell using NiFe oxide anode and NiMo cathode catalysts, at a cell temperature of 50 °C and with 1 M KOH fed to the anode. The performance of the cell increased continuously over the 260 hours test period, reaching 2.06 V at 1.0 A cm-2.

Development of Holistic Episodic Recollection.

Project description:Episodic memory binds the diverse elements of an event into a coherent representation. This coherence allows for the reconstruction of different aspects of an experience when triggered by a cue related to a past event-a process of pattern completion. Previous work has shown that such holistic recollection is evident in young adults, as revealed by dependency in retrieval success for various associations from the same event. In addition, episodic memory shows clear quantitative increases during early childhood. However, the ontogeny of holistic recollection is uncharted. Using dependency analyses, we found here that 4-year-olds (n = 32), 6-year-olds (n = 30), and young adults (n = 31) all retrieved complex events in a holistic manner; specifically, retrieval accuracy for one aspect of an event predicted accuracy for other aspects of the same event. However, the degree of holistic retrieval increased from the age 4 to adulthood. Thus, extended refinement of multiway binding may be one aspect of episodic memory development.
