Dynamics of photosynthetic induction and relaxation within the canopy of rice and two wild relatives.

ABSTRACT: Wild rice species are a source of genetic material for improving cultivated rice (Oryza sativa) and a means to understand its evolutionary history. Renewed interest in non-steady-state photosynthesis in crops has taken place due its potential in improving sustainable productivity. Variation was characterized for photosynthetic induction and relaxation at two leaf canopy levels in three rice species. The wild rice accessions had 16%-40% higher rates of leaf CO₂ uptake (A) during photosynthetic induction relative to the O. sativa accession. However, O. sativa had an overall higher photosynthetic capacity when compared to accessions of its wild progenitors. Additionally, O. sativa had a faster stomatal closing response, resulting in higher intrinsic water-use efficiency during high-to-low light transitions. Leaf position in the canopy had a significant effect on non-steady-state photosynthesis, but not steady-state photosynthesis. The results show potential to utilize wild material to refine plant models and improve non-steady-state photosynthesis in cultivated rice for increased productivity.

Project description:Enhancing photosynthetic capacity is widely accepted as critical to advancing crop yield. Therefore, identifying photosynthetic parameters positively related to biomass accumulation in elite cultivars is the major focus of current rice research. In this work, we assessed leaf photosynthetic performance, canopy photosynthesis, and yield attributes of super hybrid rice cultivars Y-liangyou 3218 (YLY3218) and Y-liangyou 5867 (YLY5867) at tillering stage and flowering stage, using inbred super rice cultivars Zhendao11(ZD11) and Nanjing 9108 (NJ9108) as control. A diurnal canopy photosynthesis model was applied to estimate the influence of key environmental factors, canopy attributes, and canopy nitrogen status on daily aboveground biomass increment (AMDAY). Results showed that primarily the light-saturated photosynthetic rate at tillering stage contributed to the advancing yield and biomass of super hybrid rice in comparison to inbred super rice, and the light-saturated photosynthetic rate between them was similar at flowering stage. At tillering stage, the higher CO2 diffusion capacity, together with higher biochemical capacity (i.e., maximum carboxylation rate of Rubisco, maximum electron transport rate (Jmax), and triose phosphate utilization rate) favored leaf photosynthesis of super hybrid rice. Similarly, AMDAY in super hybrid rice was higher than inbred super rice at tillering stage, and comparable at flowering stage partially due to increased canopy nitrogen concentration (SLNave) of inbred super rice. At tillering stage, model simulation revealed that replacement of Jmax and gm in inbred super rice by super hybrid rice always had a positive effect on AMDAY, and the averaged AMDAY increment was 5.7% and 3.4%, respectively. Simultaneously, the 20% enhancement of total canopy nitrogen concentration through the improvement of SLNave (TNC-SLNave) resulted in the highest AMDAY across cultivars, with an average increase of 11.2%. In conclusion, the advancing yield performance of YLY3218 and YLY5867 was due to the higher Jmax and gm at tillering stage, and TCN-SLNave is a promising target for future super rice breeding programs.

Project description:Accurate estimations of the vertical leaf nitrogen (N) distribution within a rice canopy is helpful for understanding the nutrient supply and demand of various functional leaf layers of rice and for improving the predictions of rice productivity. A two-year field experiment using different rice varieties, N rates, and planting densities was performed to investigate the vertical distribution of the leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC, %) within the rice canopy, the relationship between the LNC in different leaf layers (LNCLi, i = 1, 2, 3, 4), and the relationship between the LNCLi and the LNC at the canopy level (LNCCanopy). A vertical distribution model of the LNC was constructed based on the relative canopy height. Furthermore, the relationship between different vegetation indices (VIs) and the LNCCanopy, the LNCLi, and the LNC vertical distribution model parameters were studied. We also compared the following three methods for estimating the LNC in different leaf layers in rice canopy: (1) estimating the LNCCanopy by VIs and then estimating the LNCLi based on the relationship between the LNCLi and LNCCanopy; (2) estimating the LNC in any leaf layer of the rice canopy by VIs, inputting the result into the LNC vertical distribution model to obtain the parameters of the model, and then estimating the LNCLi using the LNC vertical distribution model; (3) estimating the model parameters by using VIs directly and then estimating the LNCLi by the LNC vertical distribution model. The results showed that the LNC in the bottom of rice canopy was more susceptible to different N rates, and changes in the LNC with the relative canopy height could be simulated by an exponential model. Vegetation indices could estimate the LNC at the top of rice canopy. R705/(R717+R491) (R2 = 0.763) and the renormalized difference vegetation index (RDVI) (1340, 730) (R2 = 0.747) were able to estimate the parameter "a" of the LNC vertical distribution model in indica rice and japonica rice, respectively. In addition, method (2) was the best choice for estimating the LNCLi (R2 = 0.768, 0.700, 0.623, and 0.549 for LNCL1, LNCL2, LNCL3, and LNCL4, respectively). These results provide technical support for the rapid, accurate, and non-destructive identification of the vertical distribution of nitrogen in rice canopies.
