Reading Comprehension Tests for Children: Test Equating and Specific Age-Interval Reports.

ABSTRACT: Equating is used to directly compare alternate forms of tests. We describe the equating of two alternative forms of a reading comprehension test for Brazilian children (2nd to 5th grade), Form A (n = 427) and Form B (n = 321). We employed non-equivalent random groups design with internal anchor items. Local independence was attested via standardized residual Pearson's bivariate correlation. First, from 176 items, we selected 42 in each form (33 unique and 9 in common) using 2PL model, a one-dimensional item response theory (IRT) model. Using the equateIRT package for R, the anchor items were used to link both forms. Linking coefficients were estimated under two different methods (Haebara and Stocking-Lord), resulting in scores equating by two methods: observed score equating (OSE) and true score equating (TSE). We provided reference-specific age-intervals for the sample. The final version was informative for a wide range of theta abilities. We concluded that the forms could be used interchangeably.

Project description:Weak central coherence (processing details over gist), poor oral language abilities, poor suppression, semantic interference, and poor comprehension monitoring have all been implicated to affect reading comprehension in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study viewed the contributions of different supporting skills as a collective set of skills necessary for context integration-a multi-component view-to examine individual differences in reading comprehension in school-age children (8-14 years) with ASD (n = 23) and typically developing control peers (n = 23). Participants completed a written ambiguous sentence comprehension task in which participants had to integrate context to determine the correct homonym meaning via picture selection. Both comprehension products (i.e., offline representations after reading) and processes (i.e., online processing during reading) were evaluated. Results indicated that children with ASD, similar to their TD peers, integrated the context to access the correct homonym meanings while reading. However, after reading the sentences, when participants were asked to select the meanings, both groups experienced semantic interference between the two meanings. This semantic interference hindered the children with ASD's sentence representation to a greater degree than their peers. Individual differences in age/development, word recognition, vocabulary breadth (i.e., number of words in the lexicon), and vocabulary depth (i.e., knowledge of the homonym meanings) contributed to sentence comprehension in both children with ASD and their peers. Together, this evidence supports a multi-component view, and that helping children with ASD develop vocabulary depth may have cascading effects on their reading comprehension. After reading the sentences, both groups found it hard to pick the correct meaning of the ambiguous sentence and this decision was more difficult for the participants with ASD. Older children, children with better word reading abilities, and children with higher vocabularies were better at understanding ambiguous sentences. Helping children with ASD to develop richer vocabularies could be important for improving their reading comprehension.

Project description:Reading subskills are generally regarded as continuous variables, while most models used in the previous reading diagnoses have the hypothesis that the latent variables are dichotomous. Considering that the multidimensional item response theory (MIRT) model has continuous latent variables and can be used for diagnostic purposes, this study compared the performances of MIRT with two representatives of traditionally widely used models in reading diagnoses [reduced reparametrized unified model (R-RUM) and generalized deterministic, noisy, and gate (G-DINA)]. The comparison was carried out with both empirical and simulated data. First, model-data fit indices were used to evaluate whether MIRT was more appropriate than R-RUM and G-DINA with real data. Then, with the simulated data, relations between the estimated scores from MIRT, R-RUM, and G-DINA and the true scores were compared to examine whether the true abilities were well-represented, correct classification rates under different research conditions for MIRT, R-RUM, and G-DINA were calculated to examine the person parameter recovery, and the frequency distributions of subskill mastery probability were also compared to show the deviation of the estimated subskill mastery probabilities from the true values in the general value distribution. The MIRT obtained better model-data fit, gained estimated scores being a more reasonable representation for the true abilities, had an advantage on correct classification rates, and showed less deviation from the true values in frequency distributions of subskill mastery probabilities, which means it can produce more accurate diagnostic information about the reading abilities of the test-takers. Considering that more accurate diagnostic information has greater guiding value for the remedial teaching and learning, and in reading diagnoses, the score interpretation will be more reasonable with the MIRT model, this study recommended MIRT as a new methodology for future reading diagnostic analyses.
