Complete mitochondrial genome of Tachysurus vachellii, natural diploid catfish from Nansi Lake.

ABSTRACT: Tachysurus vachellii are commercially important edible fish due to delicious taste, little bone in muscle, and high nutritional value especially in Asia. The complete mitochondrial genome of Tachysurus vachellii has been sequenced. The mitochondrial genome is 16,529 bp in length, with the base composition of 31.6% A, 26.6% T, 26.9% C, and 14.9% G, containing two ribosomal RNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and a major non-coding control region (D-loop region). The gene order and orientation are similar with some typical fish species. The data will provide useful molecular information for phylogenetic studies concerning T. vachellii and its related species.

Project description:Misgurnus anguillicaudatus is a highly valued, aquaculture-relevant food fish in East Asian countries. Because of overfishing and environmental pollution, the number of wild Taihu loach has been sharply decreased in these years. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of Taihu loach was obtained by PCR. The genome is 16,646 bp in length, including 2 ribosomal RNA genes. Thirteen proteins-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and a non-coding control region, the gene composition and order of which was similar to most reported from other vertebrates. Sequence analysis showed that the overall base composition is 29.8% for A, 28.2% for T, 25.7% for C, and 16.3% for G. The phylogenetic tree showed that Misgurnus family got together for one branch, which includes Taihu M. anguillicaudatus, and the other loaches had their own branches. Also the mitochondrial genome sequence of M. anguillicaudatus were aligned by BLAST, compared with Cobitinae the sequence similarity could reach >94%, and the similarity to Misgurnus was >99%.

Project description:The complete sequence of the mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Tachysurus nudiceps (family Bagridae; order Siluriformes) was determined using next-generation sequencing. The composition of its mitogenome is the same as that observed in most other vertebrates and consists of 37 genes, an L-strand replication origin and a control region. As in previous studies, our phylogenetic analyses revealed that many of the bagrid genera are not monophyletic, emphasizing the necessity for reviewing and revising the taxonomy of this family at the genus level.

Project description:In this study, the whole mitochondrial genome of Silurus grahami was reported to be 16,518 bp in length, including 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNAs, 22 transfer RNAs, and one control region. The phylogenetic analysis based on 13 protein-coding genes showed that S. grahami was sister to clade of S. meridionalis and S. lanzhouensis. A total of 81 bases differences were identified in COI barcoding region, which could be used for species identification in catfish.

Complete mitochondrial genome of stripped eel catfish (Plotosus lineatus).

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of stripped eel catfish, Plotosus lineatus, is sequenced in this study. The mitochondrial genome sequence is 16 480 bp in length, with the base composition of 24.7% A, 31.8% T, 27.8% G and 15.7% C. The G + C content is 43.5%. The mitochondria includes 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes and one D-loop region. Except for NAD6 gene and eight tRNA genes, all other mitochondrial genes were encoded on the heavy strand. Plotosus lineatus was confirmed to be closely related to P. japonicus (GenBank: KR270437.1), based on our phylogenetic analysis on complete mitochondrial genome sequences of 13 species. Our complete mitogenome data are going to provide the basis for taxonomic and phylogenetic research of catfishes.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Tachysurus nitidus (Siluriformes: Bagridae) from the Geum river in Korea.

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of a bagrid catfish, Tachysurus nitidus was completely analyzed by the primer walking method. It was composed of 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and a control region with a total length of 16,537 bp. In the phylogenetic tree, using mitochondrial genome of 13 related sequences revealed that T. nitidus (MW451217) of Korea is clustered with T. nitidus (KC822643) of China. This complete mitochondrial genome provides an important resource for reviewing the phylogenetic relationships and taxonomic status of the bagrid species.

Project description:Tachysurus virgatus (Oshima 1926) is a small and benthic Bagridae species that resides in the Southern China and Viet Nam. Currently, limited published genetic information has hindered our understanding of this species. In the current study, the complete mitochondrial genome of T. virgatus was determined using next generation sequencing, which was 16,524 base pairs (bp) in length and identical to most genomes of bony fishes. Phylogenetic analyses supported four clades (I, II, III, and IV) occurring in the family Bagridae and T. virgatus formed an independent clade that was sister to the clades I and II.

Complete mitochondrial DNA sequence of the Japanese endemic catfish Silurus biwaensis (Siluriformes: Siluridae) from Lake Biwa.

Project description:The Japanese endemic catfish Silurus biwaensis is distributed only in Lake Biwa and Yodo river drainages. There are four species of the genus Silurus in Japan, of which S. biwaensis has a most limited distribution. This catfish needs to be collected for DNA data owing to the lack of information related to its phylogenetic relationship. Here, the complete mitochondrial genome of the S. biwaensis from Lake Biwa in Japan was analyzed using next-generation sequencing. The mitochondrial genome of S. biwaensis was identified as a 16,531 bp circular molecule containing 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, and 2 rRNA genes, along with one A + T-rich control region. The AT content was 55.83%. The heavy (H)-strand was predicted to have 12 PCGs, 14 tRNA, and 2 rRNA genes, whereas the light (L)-strand was predicted to contain one PCG and eight tRNA genes. The start codons ATG, ATC, and GTG were found in 13 PCGs. The stop codons TAA, TAG, and AGA were observed in all PCGs, except CytB and COX3. All tRNA genes formed typical cloverleaf secondary structures. The molecular phylogenetic relationships estimated using 13 PCGs (maximum-likelihood method) indicated that S. biwaensis is genetically distinct from the sympatric species S. asotus and S. lithophilus. This result clearly indicated that S. biwaensis is a valid species.

Complete mitochondrial genome of Cominate sea catfish Occidentarius platypogon (Siluriformes: Ariidae).

Project description:The mitochondrion genome of Occidentarius platypogon was assembled from Illumina short reads, and consisted of 16,714 base pairs, with 13 protein-coding, two ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), and 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes. Base composition is 30.7% A, 26.4% T, 28.5% C, and 14.4% G, and 42.9% GC content. Two start codon (ATG and GTG) and seven stop codon (TAA, ACT, CCT, TTA, CAT, AAT, and TAG) patterns were found in protein-coding genes. Control region presented the highest A + T (64%) and lowest G + C content (35.7%) among all mitochondrial regions.
