Blue mold of apple is caused by several different <i>Penicillium</i> species, among which <i>P. expansum</i> and <i>P. solitum</i> are the most frequently isolated. <i>P. expansum</i> is the most aggressive species, and <i>P. solitum</i> is very weak when infecting apple fruit during storage.
