Catalysis of the Thermal Decomposition of Transition Metal Nitrate Hydrates by Poly(vinylidene difluoride).

ABSTRACT: Poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) doped with transition metal nitrate hydrates are cast into thin films giving a high β-phase content. Analysis of the thermal behavior of the doped PVDF shows that the decomposition of the metal (II) nitrate hydrates to metal (II) oxides is catalyzed by the PVDF, as evidenced by reduction in the decomposition temperature by as much as 170 °C compared to the pure metal salts. In contrast, there is little to no apparent catalysis for the decomposition of the metal (III) nitrate hydrates. The FTIR spectra of the gas phase decomposition products show H2O and NO2 are the major components for both PVDF-doped material and the pure metal nitrate hydrates. A mechanism for the role of PVDF is proposed that uses the internal electric field of the ferroelectric phase to orient the nitrate ions and polarize the N-O bonds.

Catalytic Thermal Decomposition of NO<sub>2</sub> by Iron(III) Nitrate Nonahydrate-Doped Poly(Vinylidene Difluoride).

Project description:The products of thermal decomposition of iron nitrate nonahydrate doped into poly(vinylidene difluoride) are examined using Mössbauer spectroscopy. Very little of the expected nitrogen dioxide product is observed, which is attributed to Fe3+ catalysis of the decomposition of NO2. The active site of the catalysis is shown to be Fe(OH)3 in the polymer matrix, which is, unexpectedly, reduced to Fe(OH)2. Thermodynamic calculations show that the reduction of Fe3+ is exergonic at sufficiently high temperatures. A reaction sequence, including a catalytic cycle for decomposition of NO2, is proposed that accounts for the observed reaction products. The role of the polymer matrix is proposed to inhibit transport of gas-phase products, which allows them to interact with Fe(OH)3 doped in the polymer.

Rationalizing the Dependence of Poly (Vinylidene Difluoride) (PVDF) Rheological Performance on the Nano-Silica.

Project description:Research on the rheological performance and mechanism of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs), mainly focuses on non-polar polymer matrices, but rarely on strongly polar ones. To fill this gap, this paper explores the influence of nanofillers on the rheological properties of poly (vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF). The effects of particle diameter and content on the microstructure, rheology, crystallization, and mechanical properties of PVDF/SiO2 were analyzed, by TEM, DLS, DMA, and DSC. The results show that nanoparticles can greatly reduce the entanglement degree and viscosity of PVDF (up to 76%), without affecting the hydrogen bonds of the matrix, which can be explained by selective adsorption theory. Moreover, uniformly dispersed nanoparticles can promote the crystallization and mechanical properties of PVDF. In summary, the viscosity regulation mechanism of nanoparticles for non-polar polymers, is also applicable to PVDF, with strong polarity, which is of great value for exploring the rheological behavior of PNCs and guiding the process of polymers.

Improved uniaxial dielectric properties in aligned diisopropylammonium bromide (DIPAB) doped poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers.

Project description:Diisopropylammonium bromide (DIPAB) doped poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers (5, 10 and 24 wt% DIPAB doping) with improved and tunable dielectric properties were synthesised via electrospinning. DIPAB nanoparticles were grown in situ during the nanofiber formation. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) proved that electrospinning of DIPAB doped PVDF solutions led to the formation of a highly electro-active β-phase in the nanofibers. Electrospinning in the presence of DIPAB inside PVDF led to very well aligned nanofibers with preferred (001) orientation that further enhanced the effective dipole moments in the nanofiber structures. The dielectric properties of the composite nanofibers were significantly enhanced due to the improved orientation, ionic and interfacial polarisation upon the applied electrospinning process, ionic nature of DIPAB and the interface between the PVDF nanofibers and equally dispersed DIPAB nanoparticles inside them, respectively. The relative dielectric constant of the PVDF nanofibers was improved from 8.5 to 102.5 when nanofibers were doped with 5% of DIPAB. Incorporating DIPAB in PVDF nanofibers has been shown to be an effective way to improve the structural and dielectric properties of PVDF.

Micropatterning of the Ferroelectric Phase in a Poly(vinylidene difluoride) Film by Plasmonic Heating with Gold Nanocages.

Project description:Polymer thin films with patterned ferroelectric domains are attractive for a broad range of applications, including the fabrication of tactile sensors, infrared detectors, and non-volatile memories. Herein, we report the use of gold nanocages (AuNCs) as plasmonic nanostructures to induce a ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition in a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) thin film by leveraging its photothermal effect. This technique allows us to generate patterned domains of ferroelectric PVDF within just a few seconds. The incorporation of AuNCs significantly enhances the pyroelectric response of the ferroelectric film under near-infrared irradiation. We also demonstrate the use of such patterned ferroelectric films for near-infrared sensing/imaging.

Dehydrofluorination Process of Poly(vinylidene difluoride) PVdF-Based Gel Polymer Electrolytes and Its Effect on Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Project description:Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) are emerging as suitable candidates for high-performing lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) due to their excellent performance and improved safety. Within them, poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVdF) and its derivatives have been widely used as polymer hosts due to their ideal mechanical and electrochemical properties. However, their poor stability with lithium metal (Li0) anode has been identified as their main drawback. Here, the stability of two PVdF-based GPEs with Li0 and their application in LSBs is studied. PVdF-based GPEs undergo a dehydrofluorination process upon contact with the Li0. This process results in the formation of a LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase that provides high stability during galvanostatic cycling. Nevertheless, despite their outstanding initial discharge, both GPEs show an unsuitable battery performance characterized by a capacity drop, ascribed to the loss of the lithium polysulfides and their interaction with the dehydrofluorinated polymer host. Through the introduction of an intriguing lithium salt (lithium nitrate) in the electrolyte, a significant improvement is achieved delivering higher capacity retention. Apart from providing a detailed study of the hitherto poorly characterized interaction process between PVdF-based GPEs and the Li0, this study demonstrates the need for an anode protection process to use this type of electrolytes in LSBs.

Transition metal trifluoroacetates (M = Fe, Co, Mn) as precursors for uniform colloidal metal difluoride and phosphide nanoparticles.

Project description:We report a simple one-pot synthesis of uniform transition metal difluoride MF2 (M = Fe, Mn, Co) nanorods based on transition metal trifluoroacetates (TMTFAs) as single-source precursors. The synthesis of metal fluorides is based on the thermolysis of TMTFAs at 250-320 °C in trioctylphosphine/trioctylphosphine oxide solvent mixtures. The FeF2 nanorods were converted into FeF3 nanorods by reaction with gaseous fluorine. The TMTFA precursors are also found to be suitable for the synthesis of colloidal transition metal phosphides. Specifically, we report that the thermolysis of a cobalt trifluoroacetate complex in trioctylphosphine as both the solvent and the phosphorus source can yield 20 nm long cobalt phosphide nanorods or, 3 nm large cobalt phosphide nanoparticles. We also assess electrochemical lithiation/de-lithiation of the obtained FeF2 and FeF3 nanomaterials.

CuO/PbO Nanocomposite: Preparation and Catalysis for Ammonium Perchlorate Thermal Decomposition.

Project description:In this present article, we reported a facile and efficient milling method to prepare a series of CuO/PbO nanocomposite metal oxides (CuO/PbO NMOs), with CuO/PbO molar ratios of 1:2, 1:1, 1:0.5, and 1:0.25 as a potential catalyst to catalyze the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP). The obtained CuO/PbO NMOs were systematically characterized. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses showed that the characteristic peaks of CuO/PbO NMOs were almost the superposition of nano CuO and nano PbO, while few new weak peaks were observed resulting from the lattice defects and new structural arrangements and chemical bonds between nano CuO and nano PbO during a high-energy grinding process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transition electron microscopy (TEM) observations exhibited that the particle sizes of the CuO/PbO NMOs were distributed in the range of 10-20 nm. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis coupled with differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) techniques verified that CuO/PbO NMOs with a CuO/PbO molar ratio of 1:1 presented the best catalytic effect for AP thermal decomposition among the other CuO/PbO NMOs, as well as the single nano CuO and nano PbO. The outstanding catalytic performance is mainly reflected as follows: shifting the peak temperature of AP in high-temperature decomposition stages from 441.3 to 347.6 °C, increasing the decomposition heat of AP from 941 to 1711 J/g, and decreasing the Gibbs free energy of AP from 199.8 to 172.1 kJ/mol, supporting the existence of a synergistic catalytic effect between nano CuO and nano PbO.

Thermal conductivity across transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers.

Project description:Cross-plane thermal conductivities of transition metal dichalcogenide MX2 (M = Mo, W; X = S, Se) bilayers are determined by homogeneous nonequilibrium molecular dynamics. The best insulator is found to be WSe2 : WSe2 , closely followed by WS2 : WS2 and MoSe2 : WSe2 . Thermal conductivities of heterobilayers are close to the average of the two corresponding homobilayer values, despite the mass and lattice mismatch. To disentangle the effects of atomic mass, lattice constant, and interaction potential, these three parameters are systematically varied. Phonon spectral analysis provides further insight into their roles and reveals the weak influence of spectral overlap between the two layers and the dominance of boundary scattering. The observed trends can be rationalized using Slack's formula in terms of the average atomic mass and the Debye temperature. Accurate interlayer interaction potentials are developed based on experimental elastic constants. Their effect on the bilayer cross-plane thermal conductivities is found to be minor.

Bridging the gap between transition metal- and bio-catalysis via aqueous micellar catalysis.

Project description:Previous studies have shown that aqueous solutions of designer surfactants enable a wide variety of valuable transformations in synthetic organic chemistry. Since reactions take place within the inner hydrophobic cores of these tailor-made nanoreactors, and products made therein are in dynamic exchange between micelles through the water, opportunities exist to use enzymes to effect secondary processes. Herein we report that ketone-containing products, formed via initial transition metal-catalyzed reactions based on Pd, Cu, Rh, Fe and Au, can be followed in the same pot by enzymatic reductions mediated by alcohol dehydrogenases. Most noteworthy is the finding that nanomicelles present in the water appear to function not only as a medium for both chemo- and bio-catalysis, but as a reservoir for substrates, products, and catalysts, decreasing noncompetitive enzyme inhibition.

Project description:We describe the anti-Markovnikov hydrothiolation of olefins using visible-light-absorbing transition metal photocatalysts. The key thiyl radical intermediates are generated upon quenching of photoexcited Ru*(bpz)3(2) with a variety of thiols. The adducts of a wide variety of olefins and thiols are formed in excellent yield (73-99%).
