Structural Insight into La0.5Ca0.5Mn0.5Co0.5O3 Decomposition in the Methane Combustion Process.

ABSTRACT: Perovskite-like solid solution La0.5Ca0.5Mn0.5Co0.5O3 was tested during the total methane combustion reaction. During the reaction, there is a noticeable decrease in methane conversion, the rate of catalyst deactivation increasing with an increase in temperature. The in situ XRD and HRTEM methods show that the observed deactivation occurs as a result of the segregation of calcite and cobalt oxide particles on the perovskite surface. According to the TGA, the observed drop in catalytic activity is also associated with a large loss of oxygen from the perovskite structure.

Designing main-group catalysts for low-temperature methane combustion by ozone.

Project description:The catalytic combustion of methane at a low temperature is becoming increasingly key to controlling unburned CH4 emissions from natural gas vehicles and power plants, although the low activity of benchmark platinum-group-metal catalysts hinders its broad application. Based on automated reaction route mapping, we explore main-group elements catalysts containing Si and Al for low-temperature CH4 combustion with ozone. Computational screening of the active site predicts that strong Brønsted acid sites are promising for methane combustion. We experimentally demonstrate that catalysts containing strong Bronsted acid sites exhibit improved CH4 conversion at 250 °C, correlating with the theoretical predictions. The main-group catalyst (proton-type beta zeolite) delivered a reaction rate that is 442 times higher than that of a benchmark catalyst (5 wt% Pd-loaded Al2O3) at 190 °C and exhibits higher tolerance to steam and SO2. Our strategy demonstrates the rational design of earth-abundant catalysts based on automated reaction route mapping.

Improved catalytic combustion of methane using CuO nanobelts with predominantly (001) surfaces.

Project description:Through computational calculations, CuO(001) has been identified as an active surface for methane oxidation. Experimental validation with CuO nanobelts comprised of predominantly (001) surfaces has been performed and it is confirmed that the performance of such nanobelts is much higher than normal nanoparticles and nanowires. First principle calculations further clarified that two-coordinated oxygen plays a key role for methane adsorption and oxidation.

Numerical Investigations on Methane-Air Nanosecond Pulsed Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma-Assisted Combustion.

Project description:Plasma-assisted combustion is a promising approach to achieve fast ignition and highly efficient combustion. In this work, methane-air nanosecond pulsed dielectric barrier discharge plasma-assisted combustion is numerically investigated by combining a homemade plasma model with the combustion model of software CHEMKIN-PRO. Effects of varying applied voltage amplitudes on the characteristic parameters of the plasma-assisted planar shear flow combustion as well as the reaction pathway maps of not only the nanosecond pulsed dielectric barrier discharge plasma but also the combustions without and with plasma assistance are systematically illustrated and analyzed. The simulation results indicate that under the combined action of increasing electric field intensity and increasing charged particle densities, the peak value of the discharge current density increases, and the peak time of the discharge current density is brought forward with the increase of the applied voltage amplitude. The temperature reaches its peak value earlier in the methane-air combustion with plasma assistance than without plasma assistance. The maximum temperature reduces to around 1900 K when the applied voltage amplitude is higher than 11 kV. There are emerging pathways to generate hydrocarbons C2H4 and C2H2 in the plasma-assisted combustion, the reactions of CH4 on CH and C2H on H2, respectively. The reactions involving active species such as H play a significant role in the plasma-assisted combustion, which causes an obvious decrease in the densities of these active species with plasma assistance.

Selective Coke Combustion by Oxygen Pulsing During Mo/ZSM-5-Catalyzed Methane Dehydroaromatization.

Project description:Non-oxidative methane dehydroaromatization is a promising reaction to directly convert natural gas into aromatic hydrocarbons and hydrogen. Commercialization of this technology is hampered by rapid catalyst deactivation because of coking. A novel approach is presented involving selective oxidation of coke during methane dehydroaromatization at 700 °C. Periodic pulsing of oxygen into the methane feed results in substantially higher cumulative product yield with synthesis gas; a H2 /CO ratio close to two is the main side-product of coke combustion. Using 13 C isotope labeling of methane it is demonstrated that oxygen predominantly reacts with molybdenum carbide species. The resulting molybdenum oxides catalyze coke oxidation. Less than one-fifth of the available oxygen reacts with gaseous methane. Combined with periodic regeneration at 550 °C, this strategy is a significant step forward, towards a process for converting methane into liquid hydrocarbons.

Non-Noble Metal Oxide Catalysts for Methane Catalytic Combustion: Sonochemical Synthesis and Characterisation.

Project description:The aim of this study was to obtain nanocrystalline mixed metal-oxide-ZrO₂ catalysts via a sonochemically-induced preparation method. The effect of a stabiliser's addition on the catalyst parameters was investigated by several characterisation methods including X-ray Diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and µRaman. The sonochemical preparation method allowed us to manufacture the catalysts with uniformly dispersed metal-oxide nanoparticles at the support surface. The catalytic activity was tested in a methane combustion reaction. The activity of the catalysts prepared by the sonochemical method was higher than that of the reference catalysts prepared by the incipient wetness method without ultrasonic irradiation. The cobalt and chromium mixed zirconia catalysts revealed their high activities, which are comparable with those presented in the literature.

Structural, Magnetic, and Catalytic Evaluation of Spinel Co, Ni, and Co-Ni Ferrite Nanoparticles Fabricated by Low-Temperature Solution Combustion Process.

Project description:Here, we present the low-temperature (∼600 °C) solution combustion method for the fabrication of CoFe2O4, NiFe2O4, and Co0.5Ni0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles (NPs) of 12-64 nm range in pure cubic spinel structure, by adjusting the oxidant (nitrate ions)/reductant (glycine) ratio in the reaction mixture. Although nitrate ions/glycine (N/G) ratios of 3 and 6 were used for the synthesis, phase-pure NPs could be obtained only for the N/G ratio of 6. For the N/G ratio 3, certain amount of Ni2+ cations was reduced to metallic nickel. The NH3 gas generated during the thermal decomposition of the amino acid (glycine, H2NCH2COOH) induced the reduction reaction. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques were utilized to characterize the synthesized materials. XRD analyses of the samples indicate that the Co0.5Ni0.5Fe2O4 NPs have lattice parameter larger than that of NiFe2O4, but smaller than that of CoFe2O4 NPs. Although the saturation magnetization (M s) of Co0.5Ni0.5Fe2O4 NPs lies in between the saturation magnetization values of CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4 NPs, high coercivity (H c, 875 Oe) of the NPs indicate their hard ferromagnetic behavior. Catalytic behavior of the fabricated spinel NPs revealed that the samples containing metallic Ni are active catalysts for the degradation of 4-nitrophenol in aqueous medium.

Insight into multi-scale structural evolution during gelatinization process of normal and waxy maize starch.

Project description:By using a mimicked heating with ex-situ liquid nitrogen flash freezing method, multi-scale structural evolution behaviors of normal maize starch (NMS) and waxy maize starch (WMS) during gelatinization process were studied. The results from SEM, X-ray diffraction (XRD), FTIR/solid state NMR spectroscopy and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) showed that NMS and WMS exhibited differently structural evolution behavior during gelatinization process. As the temperature increase, the proportion of the NMS granules with cavity gradually increased, while after heating beyond (peak gelatinization temperature (Tp) + conclusion gelatinization temperature (Tc))/2 the disappearance of starch granule integrity occurred for WMS. The relative crystallinity of NMS declined from 32.8 to 15.26% gradually, as that of WMS declined from 42.43 to 13.09% with a sharply descent when heated beyond (Tp + Tc)/2. The loss of short-range order structure of NMS and WMS showed same trends according to FTIR and NMR. Semicrystalline lamellae of NMS became thinner gradually while that of WMS showed an apparently narrowing after heating beyond (Tp + Tc)/2. These results suggest that the destruction of double helix in amylopectin structure had greatly influence on the larger scale structure of starch samples. Process-based network decomposition reveals backbone motif structure.

Project description:A central challenge in systems biology today is to understand the network of interactions among biomolecules and, especially, the organizing principles underlying such networks. Recent analysis of known networks has identified small motifs that occur ubiquitously, suggesting that larger networks might be constructed in the manner of electronic circuits by assembling groups of these smaller modules. Using a unique process-based approach to analyzing such networks, we show for two cell-cycle networks that each of these networks contains a giant backbone motif spanning all the network nodes that provides the main functional response. The backbone is in fact the smallest network capable of providing the desired functionality. Furthermore, the remaining edges in the network form smaller motifs whose role is to confer stability properties rather than provide function. The process-based approach used in the above analysis has additional benefits: It is scalable, analytic (resulting in a single analyzable expression that describes the behavior), and computationally efficient (all possible minimal networks for a biological process can be identified and enumerated).
