Chitosan Functionalized with 2-Methylpyridine Cross-Linker Cellulose to Adsorb Pb(II) from Water.

ABSTRACT: In this study, chitosan was chemically modified with 2-methylpyridine. Subsequently, the modified chitosan was cross-linked to cellulose using succinic anhydride. Additionally, the capacity of cellulose derivatives to adsorb Pb(II) ions in an aqueous solution was studied through the determination of Pb(II) ions concentration in water, using microwave plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (MP-AES). A maximum adsorption capacity of 6.62, 43.14, 60.6, and 80.26 mg/g was found for cellulose, cellulose-succinic acid, cellulose-chitosan, and cellulose-chitosan-pyridine, respectively. The kinetic data analysis of the adsorption process showed a pseudo-second-order behavior. The increase in metal removal from water is possibly due to metal chelation with the carbonyl group of succinic acid, and the pyridine groups incorporated into chitosan.

Synthesis of Eco-Friendly Biopolymer, Alginate-Chitosan Composite to Adsorb the Heavy Metals, Cd(II) and Pb(II) from Contaminated Effluents.

Project description:Efficient removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from contaminated water is considered a fundamental point of view. Synthetic hydrogel biopolymers based on chitosan and alginate (cost-effective and eco-friendly) were successfully designed and characterized by highly efficient removal contaminants. The sorbents are characterized by FTIR, SEM-EDX, TGA, XPS analyses and textural properties which are qualified by N2 adsorption. The sorption properties are firstly investigated by the effect of pH, sorption isotherms, uptake kinetics, and selectivity from multi-metal solution with equi-molar concentration. The sorbent with 1:3 ratios (of chitosan and alginate respectively) is the most effective for metal removal (i.e., 0.81 mmol Cd g-1 and 0.41 mmol Pb g-1). Langmuir and Sip's models fitted better the adsorption isotherms compared to the Freundlich model. Uptake kinetics was well fitted by pseudo-first-order rate equation, while the saturation was achieved within 40 min. The sorbent shows good reproducibility through duplicate the experiments with negligible decreasing efficiency (>2.5%). The sorbent was applied for water treatment on samples collected from the industrial area (i.e., 653 and 203 times over the MCL for Cd(II) and Pb(II) respectively according to WHO). The concentration of Cd and Pb was drastically decreased in the effluents as pH increased with removal efficiency up to 99% for both elements at pH 5.8 and SD equivalent 1 g L-1 for 5 h.

Ni(II) and Pb(II) Removal Using Bacterial Cellulose Membranes.

Project description:Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a highly crystalline nanosized material with a high number of active groups. This study focuses on the synthesis of BC membranes through fermentation, their characterization and application to remove Ni(II) and Pb(II) from wastewater by adsorption under different conditions. Four-day-grown BC membranes form three-dimensional nanofibril networks with a pH of 6.3 and a high cationic demand (52.5 μeq·g-1). The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Sips isotherm model best describe the adsorption of both metals. The intraparticle diffusion model of Ni(II) revealed a three-step mechanism of adsorption-plateau-adsorption, while Pb(II) adsorption followed a typical reducing-slope trend up to saturation. The highest removal of Ni(II) and Pb(II) was obtained at pH 4 with a BC dosage of 400 mg·L-1. The maximum adsorption capacities were 28.18 mg·g-1 and 8.49 mg·g-1 for Ni(II) and Pb(II), respectively, involving the total coverage of the material active sites. Thermodynamically, Ni(II) adsorption was exothermic, and Pb(II) was endothermic. The obtained values of sorption heat, activation and Gibbs' energy depicted a physisorption process. Ni(II) removal mechanism was ruled by crystallization on the metals adsorbed on the BC active groups, while Pb(II) was driven by the adsorption process, as shown by TEM images of the spent material.

Water-soluble carboxymethyl chitosan (WSCC)-modified single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) provide efficient adsorption of Pb(ii) from water.

Project description:Nanocomposites play a key role in the removal of toxic metal(loid)s from environmental water. In this study, we investigated the adsorption capability of water-soluble carboxymethyl chitosan (WSCC)-modified functionally oxidized single walled carbon nanotubes (oSWCNTs) for rapid and efficient removal of toxic Pb(ii) from water. The WSCC-oSWCNTs nanocomposite was prepared by an acid treatment of SWCNTs followed by an ultrasonic dispersion process using WSCC as dispersant. The morphology and chemical characteristics of the WSCC-oSWCNTs nanocomposite were further identified using various characterization techniques (i.e., transmission electron microscopy, TEM; scanning electron microscopy, SEM; Raman spectra; Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, FTIR; X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, XPS; nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm test). The efficiency of the adsorption process in batch experiments was investigated via determining various factor effects (i.e. WSCC-oSWCNTs nanocomposite concentration, solution pH, initial Pb(ii) concentration, contact time, and reaction temperature). Kinetic results showed that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order, while an isotherm results study showed that the adsorption process followed the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models at the same time. In addition, the van't Hoff equation was used to calculate thermodynamic parameters for assessing the endothermic properties and spontaneity of the adsorption process. The WSCC-oSWCNTs nanocomposite manifested a high adsorption capacity for Pb(ii) (113.63 mg g-1) via electrostatic interactions and ion-exchange, as its adsorption rate could reach up to 98.72%. This study, therefore, provides a novel adsorbent for the removal and detection of harmful residues (i.e. toxic metal(loid)s) from environmental water, such as industry wastewater treatment and chemical waste management.

Preparation of terpyridine-functionalized paramagnetic nickel-zinc ferrite microspheres for adsorbing Pb(ii), Hg(ii), and Cd(ii) from water.

Project description:A paramagnetic microsphere combining special functional groups may be one kind of the most promising methods for heavy metal adsorption, due to their specific separation capacity, selectivity and reusability. In this study, a novel terpyridine-based magnetic solid-phase adsorbent (TPY-M) is successfully constructed. The paramagnetic Ni0.25Zn0.75Fe2O4 microsphere (M) is synthesized and applied as a magnetic core, and is functionalized by terpyridine (TPY) groups. The naked magnetic core and TPY-M are characterized by vibration sample magnetism (VSM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) techniques. Some parameters of the TPY-M samples are evaluated as potential adsorbents for heavy metal ions in various aqueous solutions. The adsorption capacities of TPY-M for Pb(ii), Hg(ii) and Cd(ii) were 64.75 mg g-1, 33.94 mg g-1 and 24.64 mg g-1 under given conditions, respectively. In the case of Pb(ii), some influencing factors on the TPY-M adsorbent are investigated, including the pH, adsorption time, and ion concentrations. The adsorbent can be easily regenerated by HCl solution after use. The adsorbent revealed good adsorption performance in some real water samples.

Functionalized Glutathione on Chitosan-Genipin Cross-Linked Beads Used for the Removal of Trace Metals from Water.

Project description:Functionalized glutathione on chitosan-genipin cross-linked beads (CS-GG) was synthesized and tested as an adsorbent for the removal of Fe(II) and Cu(II) from aqueous solution. The beads were characterized by several techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), CNS elementary analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The effect of several parameters such as the pH, the temperature, and the contact time was tested to optimize the condition for the adsorption reaction. The beads were incubated in aqueous solutions contaminated with different concentrations of Fe(II) and Cu(II) (under the range concentration from 10 to 400 mg·L-1), and the adsorption capacity was evaluated by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The adsorption equilibrium was reached after 120 min of incubation under optimal pH 5 for Fe(II) and after 180 min under optimal pH 6 for Cu(II). According to the Langmuir isotherm, the maximum adsorption capacities (q max) for Fe(II) and Cu(II) were 208 mg·g-1 and 217 mg·g-1, respectively. Our results showed that the adsorption efficiency of both metals on CS-GG beads was correlated with the degree of temperature. In addition, the adsorption reaction was spontaneous and endothermic, indicated by the positive values of ΔG 0 and ΔH 0. Therefore, the present study demonstrated that the new synthesized CS-GG beads had a strong adsorption capacity for Fe(II) and Cu(II) and were efficient to remove these trace metals from aqueous solution.

Functionalized Cellulose Networks for Efficient Oil Removal from Oil⁻Water Emulsions.

Project description:The separation of oil from water in emulsions is a great environmental challenge, since oily wastewater is industrially produced. Here, we demonstrate a highly efficient method to separate oil from water in non-stabilized emulsions, using functionalized cellulose fiber networks. This is achieved by the modification of the wetting properties of the fibers, transforming them from oil- and water-absorbing to water-absorbing and oil-proof. In particular, two diverse layers of polymeric coatings, paraffin wax and poly(dimethylsiloxane)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PDMS-b-PEO) diblock copolymer, are applied on the surface of each individual fiber by a two-step dip adsorption process. The resulting cellulose networks exhibit superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity and they are mechanically reinforced. Therefore, the described treatment makes cellulose fiber networks excellent candidates for the filtration and subsequent removal of oil from oil-in-water non-stabilized emulsions with oil separation efficiency up to 99%. The good selectivity, reproducibility, and cost effectiveness of the preparation process leads to the production of low cost filters that can be used in oil⁻water separation applications.

A Novel Bismuth-Chitosan Nanocomposite Sensor for Simultaneous Detection of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Zn(II) in Wastewater.

Project description:A novel bismuth (Bi)-biopolymer (chitosan) nanocomposite screen-printed carbon electrode was developed using a Bi and chitosan co-electrodepositing technique for detecting multiple heavy metal ions. The developed sensor was fabricated with environmentally benign materials and processes. In real wastewater, heavy metal detection was evaluated by the developed sensor using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). The nanocomposite sensor showed the detection limit of 0.1 ppb Zn2+, 0.1 ppb Cd2+ and 0.2 ppb Pb2+ in stock solutions. The improved sensitivity of the Bi-chitosan nanocomposite sensor over previously reported Bi nanocomposite sensors was attributed to the role of chitosan. When used for real wastewater samples collected from a mining site and soil leachate, similar detection limit values with 0.4 ppb Cd2+ and 0.3 ppb Pb2+ were obtained with relative standard deviations (RSD) ranging from 1.3% to 5.6% (n = 8). Temperature changes (4 and 23 °C) showed no significant impact on sensor performance. Although Zn2+ in stock solutions was well measured by the sensor, the interference observed while detecting Zn2+ in the presence of Cu2+ was possibly due to the presence of Cu-Zn intermetallic species in mining wastewater. Overall, the developed sensor has the capability of monitoring multiple heavy metals in contaminated water samples without the need for complicated sample preparation or transportation of samples to a laboratory.

Functionalized chitosan electrospun nanofiber for effective removal of trace arsenate from water.

Project description:An environment-friendly iron functionalized chitosan elctrospun nanofiber (ICS-ENF) was synthesized for trace arsenate removal from water. The ICS-ENF was fabricated by electrospinning a mixture of chitosan, PEO and Fe(3+) followed by crosslinking with ammonia vapor. The physicochemical properties of ICS-ENF were characterized by FESEM, TEM-EDX and XRD. The ICS-ENF was found to be highly effective for As(V) adsorption at neutral pH. The As(V) adsorption occurred rapidly and achieved equilibrium within 100 min, which was well fitted by pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The As(V) adsorption decreased with increased ionic strength, suggesting an outer-sphere complexation of As(V) on ICS-ENF. Freundlich model well described the adsorption isotherm, and the maximum adsorption capacity was up to 11.2 mg/g at pH 7.2. Coexisting anions of chloride and sulfate showed negligible influence on As(V) removal, but phosphate and silicate significantly reduced As(V) adsorption by competing for adsorption sites. FTIR and XPS analysis demonstrated -NH, -OH and C-O were responsible for As(V) uptake. ICS-ENF was easily regenerated using 0.003 M NaOH, and the removal rate remained above 98% after ten successively adsorption-desorption recycles. This study extends the potential applicability of electrospun nanofibers for water purification and provides a promising approach for As(V) removal from water.

Synthesis of Amino-Functionalized Waste Wood Flour Adsorbent for High-Capacity Pb(II) Adsorption.

Project description:An innovative wood flour-based adsorbent for Pb(II) removal was synthesized via a cost-effective and environment-friendly method, which could be high on the priority list owing to its high absorption capacity. By increasing the specific surface and introducing functional groups through delignification and amination, the experimental adsorption capacity of the prepared adsorbent could reach 189.9 mg/g in 180 min (pH = 4, T = 293 K, dosage = 1 g/L, and ion concentration = 300 mg/L). This value is higher than most of those achieved in previous studies on wood-based adsorbents. Pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models were utilized to describe the adsorption kinetics and isotherms, respectively. The effects of solution pH, adsorbent dosage, and temperature on the adsorption efficiency were also evaluated. With a low decrease rate of 20.2% in five cycles, the adsorbent possessed reusability. The adsorbents exhibited high selectivity in the Pb(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) mixed solution, and the selectivity coefficient k of adsorbents to Pb(II) could reach approximately 2.74 in triad. The method could prompt the development of cost-effective methods for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater.

Electrospun superhydrophilic membranes for effective removal of Pb(ii) from water.

Project description:Nanofibrous membranes have a high specific surface area and large porosity, which are beneficial for being used as adsorbents to remove heavy metal ions from water. In this work, electrospun nanofibers were wrapped with a hydrogel layer with a tunable thickness, which endowed the membrane with excellent superhydrophilic performance. Because of good water-retention properties and abundant functional groups originating from the hydrogel layer, as a static adsorbent, the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(ii) was up to 146.21 mg g-1 according to the Langmuir model. Meanwhile, the electrospun membrane also possessed water permeability as a flow-through membrane for dynamic adsorption, which was obviously different from traditional hydrogel adsorbents. As a result, the rejection ratio of Pb(ii) can remain over 55% after running for 72 h under high pH conditions and at low initial ion concentrations. Apart from these, cycle operations confirmed the regeneration of the membrane, and competitive adsorption experiments illustrated the selective removal of Pb(ii) in a mixed ion solution.
