Project description:BackgroundThe effectiveness of digital health interventions is commonly assumed to be related to the level of user engagement with the digital health intervention, including measures of both digital health intervention use and users' subjective experience. However, little is known about the relationships between the measures of digital health intervention engagement and physical activity or sedentary behavior.ObjectiveThis study aims to describe the direction and strength of the association between engagement with digital health interventions and physical activity or sedentary behavior in adults and explore whether the direction of association of digital health intervention engagement with physical activity or sedentary behavior varies with the type of engagement with the digital health intervention (ie, subjective experience, activities completed, time, and logins).MethodsFour databases were searched from inception to December 2019. Grey literature and reference lists of key systematic reviews and journals were also searched. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they examined a quantitative association between a measure of engagement with a digital health intervention targeting physical activity and a measure of physical activity or sedentary behavior in adults (aged ≥18 years). Studies that purposely sampled or recruited individuals on the basis of pre-existing health-related conditions were excluded. In addition, studies were excluded if the individual engaging with the digital health intervention was not the target of the physical activity intervention, the study had a non-digital health intervention component, or the digital health interventions targeted multiple health behaviors. A random effects meta-analysis and direction of association vote counting (for studies not included in meta-analysis) were used to address objective 1. Objective 2 used vote counting on the direction of the association.ResultsOverall, 10,653 unique citations were identified and 375 full texts were reviewed. Of these, 19 studies (26 associations) were included in the review, with no studies reporting a measure of sedentary behavior. A meta-analysis of 11 studies indicated a small statistically significant positive association between digital health engagement (based on all usage measures) and physical activity (0.08, 95% CI 0.01-0.14, SD 0.11). Heterogeneity was high, with 77% of the variation in the point estimates explained by the between-study heterogeneity. Vote counting indicated that the relationship between physical activity and digital health intervention engagement was consistently positive for three measures: subjective experience measures (2 of 3 associations), activities completed (5 of 8 associations), and logins (6 of 10 associations). However, the direction of associations between physical activity and time-based measures of usage (time spent using the intervention) were mixed (2 of 5 associations supported the hypothesis, 2 were inconclusive, and 1 rejected the hypothesis).ConclusionsThe findings indicate a weak but consistent positive association between engagement with a physical activity digital health intervention and physical activity outcomes. No studies have targeted sedentary behavior outcomes. The findings were consistent across most constructs of engagement; however, the associations were weak.

Project description:The impact of diet on academic achievement is a growing area of research. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the current evidence examining dietary intake and academic achievement in college/university students. Eight electronic databases were searched for studies published in English to January 2016. To be included, studies must have been conducted in higher education (i.e., college, university) students, reported measures of dietary intake and academic achievement, and reported the association between these. Data were extracted using a standardised tool, and studies were assessed for methodological quality. Seven studies were included, with four rated as positive quality, and the remaining three rated as neutral. Most studies were cross-sectional (n = 4), and conducted in America (n = 5). The most common dietary outcomes were fruit and vegetable (n = 3), and breakfast consumption (n = 3). Standardised grade point average (GPA) was the most common measure of academic achievement (n = 4). Five studies reported small to moderate significant positive associations between diet and academic achievement, including for breakfast, regular meal consumption, and meeting national recommendations for fruit intake. This review examines the current evidence regarding diet and academic achievement in college/university students. The results demonstrate that few studies exist in this population group. Future studies should consider the use of validated dietary assessment methods, comprehensive measures of overall diet, and use standardised assessment and reporting of academic outcomes.

Project description:IntroductionLack of engagement is a common challenge for digital health interventions. To achieve their potential, it is necessary to understand how best to support users' engagement with interventions and target health behaviors. The aim of this systematic review was to identify the behavioral theories and behavior change techniques being incorporated into mobile health apps and how they are associated with the different components of engagement.MethodsThe review was structured using the PRISMA and PICOS frameworks and searched six databases in July 2022: PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, APA PsycArticles, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science. Risk of bias was evaluated using the Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias 2 and the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tools.AnalysisA descriptive analysis provided an overview of study and app characteristics and evidence for potential associations between Behavior Change Techniques (BCTs) and engagement was examined.ResultsThe final analysis included 28 studies. Six BCTs were repeatedly associated with user engagement: goal setting, self-monitoring of behavior, feedback on behavior, prompts/cues, rewards, and social support. There was insufficient data reported to examine associations with specific components of engagement, but the analysis indicated that the different components were being captured by various measures.ConclusionThis review provides further evidence supporting the use of common BCTs in mobile health apps. To enable developers to leverage BCTs and other app features to optimize engagement in specific contexts and individual characteristics, we need a better understanding of how BCTs are associated with different components of engagement.Systematic review registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/, identifier CRD42022312596.

Project description:BackgroundWhile numerous studies have reported associations between low dietary potassium intake and adverse clinical outcomes, methods to estimate potassium intake, mainly self-reported dietary measures and urinary potassium excretion, entail certain limitations. Self-reported measures are subject to underreporting and overreporting. Urinary potassium excretion is affected by multiple factors including renal function. Revealing the degree of bias inherent in these measures would help accurately assess potassium intake and its association with disease risk. We aim to summarize evidence on the strength of the associations between potassium intake estimated from 24-h urinary potassium excretion and potassium intake estimated from self-reported dietary measures or objective quantification methods in populations with different kidney function levels and age groups. We also aim to identify factors that affect the association strength.MethodsWe will search for potentially eligible studies that examined associations between self-reported potassium intake, 24-h urinary potassium excretion, and objectively quantified potassium intake, using MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus. Studies on children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly are eligible. Studies of patients on dialysis will be excluded. Collective study results, including a meta-analysis, will be synthesized if an adequate number of studies examining similar dietary potassium intake estimation methods are found. Analyses will be performed separately according to age groups and renal function. For the meta-analysis, fixed-effects or random-effect models will be employed depending on the degree of study heterogeneity to combine across studies the correlation coefficient, ratio, or standardized mean difference for potassium intake, comparing dietary potassium intake based on self-reported or objectively quantified methods and intake based on 24-h urinary potassium excretion. The degree of heterogeneity among included studies will be examined by calculating I2 statistics. To investigate sources of study heterogeneity, random-effects meta-regression analyses will be performed.DiscussionRevealing the strength of the association between dietary and urinary measures in populations with different levels of kidney function and age groups will enhance researchers' and clinicians' ability to interpret studies that utilize these measures and help establish a more solid evidence base for the role of potassium intake in changing chronic disease risk. Identifying factors that modify the associations between these measures may aid in developing predictive models to estimate actual potassium intake.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO CRD42022357847.

Project description:Background: Depression is the third leading cause of worldwide disease burden among youth, and nutrition- and diet-related behaviors have been considered as an effective strategy for reducing the risk of depressive symptoms. This systematic review aims to examine associations between dietary intake and diet quality with depressive symptoms among youth. Methods: In this systematic review, a search of scientific articles published between 2000 and 2021 was performed in four databases (CINAHL, Embase, PsycInfo, and PubMed) according to the PRISMA checklist. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, observational studies that focused on associations between micronutrient, macronutrient, food group intake, and diet quality and depressive symptoms among youth, ages 3 to 18, were selected for review. Results: Thirty-two articles met the review criteria. Dietary intake of magnesium, vitamin B12, fiber, fruits, vegetables, and fish were consistently inversely related to depressive symptoms. However, the evidence of associations between intake of vitamins B6, C, D, and E, iron, copper, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, carbohydrate, and dietary fat and depressive symptoms was mixed. Dietary effects on decreased depressive symptoms were more pronounced in children than adolescents. Additionally, most studies failed to adjust for potential confounding variables. Conclusion: This review provides preliminary and comprehensive evidence for a relationship between dietary intake, diet quality, and depressive symptoms in youth. Although the results are heterogeneous and more research is needed, our findings indicate the importance of nutrition interventions for youth for decreasing depressive symptoms or for preventing further symptom exacerbation.

Project description:ObjectivesTo collect and summarise all current data from observational studies, generating evidence of the association between health literacy (HL) and the dietary intake of sugar, salt and fat, to analyse intervention studies on the promotion of an appropriate dietary intake of the above-mentioned nutrients and to ascertain whether HL moderates the efficacy of such intervention.DesignA systematic literature search of analytical observational studies on the association between HL and dietary intake of sugar, salt and fat was performed in Medline and Scopus databases. Intervention studies on the promotion of healthy nutrition that concerned the intake of sugar, salt and fat were also assessed.ResultsOf the eight observational studies included in this review, five investigated dietary intake of sugar, one focused on salt, one assessed sugar and salt and one analysed the fat intake. The results of the five studies assessing sugar were mixed: three found an association between low levels of HL and a high sugar intake, one found this association only for boys and two found no evidence of any association. The two studies assessing salt and the one assessing fat found no evidence of any association with HL. One intervention study on the sugar intake concluded that HL was not a significant moderator of the intervention's effectiveness.ConclusionNo evidence of any association between HL and salt and fat intake emerged, while for sugar, the results are mixed. More work is needed to better understand the moderating effects of HL on the outcomes of health promotion interventions.

Project description:BackgroundDigitally enabled care along with an emphasis on self-management of health is steadily growing. Mobile health apps provide a promising means of supporting health behavior change; however, engagement with them is often poor and evidence of their impact on health outcomes is lacking. As engagement is a key prerequisite to health behavior change, it is essential to understand how engagement with mobile health apps and their target health behaviors can be better supported. Although the importance of engagement is emphasized strongly in the literature, the understanding of how different components of engagement are associated with specific techniques that aim to change behaviors is lacking.ObjectiveThe purpose of this systematic review protocol is to provide a synthesis of the associations between various behavior change techniques (BCTs) and the different components and measures of engagement with mobile health apps.MethodsThe review protocol was structured using the PRISMA-P (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols) and the PICOS (Population, Intervention, Comparator, Outcome, and Study type) frameworks. The following seven databases will be systematically searched: PubMed, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, APA PsycInfo, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. Title and abstract screening, full-text review, and data extraction will be conducted by 2 independent reviewers. Data will be extracted into a predetermined form, any disagreements in screening or data extraction will be discussed, and a third reviewer will be consulted if consensus cannot be reached. Risk of bias will be assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias 2 and the Risk Of Bias In Non-Randomized Studies - of Interventions (ROBINS-I) tools; descriptive and thematic analyses will be conducted to summarize the relationships between BCTs and the different components of engagement.ResultsThe systematic review has not yet started. It is expected to be completed and submitted for publication by May 2022.ConclusionsThis systematic review will summarize the associations between different BCTs and various components and measures of engagement with mobile health apps. Project description:This systematic review aims to comprehensively evaluate the literature regarding the impact of variations in dietary intake, both between- and within-day, on adiposity and glucose metabolism. We included observational and experimental articles obtained from PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and gray literature until 9 October, 2023, evaluating the impact of between- or within-day variations in meal, energy, or macronutrient intake on these outcomes. Our focus was on adults aged ≥18 y, spanning both healthy individuals and those with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Given the diverse range of exposures, treatments, and outcomes among the selected articles, we chose a qualitative synthesis approach to effectively analyze the data. Eighty articles from 43 observational and 37 experimental studies were included, involving 89,178 participants. Patterns of dietary intake variation were identified and systematically organized into distinct categories based on similarities. Between-day variations in dietary intake consisted of between-day variations in both the quantity consumed and meal timing. Meanwhile, within-day variations encompassed factors such as eating window, meal omission, within-day meal timing, within-day variation in dietary intake quantity, and temporal distribution. Despite mixed results, time-restricted eating was generally associated with lower adiposity. However, limited control for total daily energy intake (TDEI) suggests that the contribution of lower energy intake cannot be conclusively excluded. Conversely, the adverse effect of meal omission on glucose parameters was consistently supported by randomized trials. Interestingly, the results showed that consuming a substantial portion of TDEI in the morning may increase the likelihood of observing improvements in adiposity. Furthermore, inconsistencies in outcomes across articles examining the effects in healthy compared with T2DM populations, or in energy-sufficient compared with deficient individuals, indicate potential condition-specific effects. These findings support the need for further investigation into the effects of between- and within-day variations in dietary intake to better understand their impact on adiposity and glucose homeostasis. Project description:BackgroundDigital interventions offer vital support for patients with cancer through education, behavior change, and monitoring. Despite their potential, patient adherence to and engagement with these self-help interventions is challenging. Factors like user characteristics, technology, and intervention design influence adherence and engagement. Existing reviews have gaps in exploring diverse factors associated with adherence in cancer care.ObjectiveThis systematic review aims to identify factors influencing adherence to and engagement with digital interventions with self-help components in cancer care. It examined sociodemographic, psychosocial, health-related, and intervention-related factors that affect patients' adherence to and engagement with these digital health solutions.MethodsFollowing PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, a search was conducted across PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and PsycINFO to find studies published from January 2010 to September 2021. The studies included in this review focused on adult patients with cancer using digital interventions with self-help features. Data were extracted and synthesized using a standardized approach. Factors associated with adherence were synthesized according to their type-sociodemographic factors, psychosocial factors, health-related factors, technology-related factors, and intervention-related factors.ResultsAmong 9386 studies initially screened, 61 (0.6%) were eligible for analysis. These studies covered diverse eHealth intervention types, cancer types, and outcome measures. Investigating the determinants of adherence to and engagement with digital interventions was the main objective for 43% (26/61) of the included studies. Adherence and engagement were gauged using varied measures, such as dropout rates, log-ins, and self-reported measures. Results regarding factors associated with adherence and engagement were inconsistent across studies. Most sociodemographic (eg, age) and health-related factors (eg, cancer stage) yielded mixed outcomes. However, comorbidity consistently predicted lower adherence and engagement. Results regarding psychosocial factors were more stable across studies. Specifically, higher social support was associated with lower adherence and engagement. Finally, intervention-related factors like intervention type or human support showed conflicting results. Adopting an intersectional perspective revealed that specificities vary according to intervention goals and the operationalization of adherence versus engagement, with women being more adherent and engaged than men in interventions targeting distress. When focusing on adherence rather than engagement, older patients were more adherent than younger patients.ConclusionsThis review highlights the complexity of adherence to and engagement with digital interventions in cancer care. While some factors, notably comorbidities and low social support, were consistently linked to adherence and engagement, others displayed mixed associations. The review underscores the need for standardizing measures, investigating specific intervention features, and enhancing study quality to optimize digital interventions for patients with cancer. Project description:(1) Background: Research suggests that certain foods may have addictive effects; however, no reviews have systematically appraised studies in this area. The aims of this review were to determine the nutrients, foods and dietary patterns associated with addictive eating. (2) Methods: Published studies up to November 2020 were identified through searches of 6 electronic databases. Eligible studies included those in in children and adults that reported dietary intakes of individuals with 'food addiction'. (3) Results: Fifteen studies (n = 12 in adults and n = 3 in children/adolescents with Yale Food Addiction Scale defined 'food addiction') were included. Foods commonly associated with addictive eating were those high in a combination of fat and refined carbohydrates. Generally, intakes of energy, carbohydrates and fats were significantly higher in individuals with addictive eating compared to those without. (4) Conclusions: Due to the heterogeneity in study methodologies and outcomes across included studies, it is difficult to conclude if any specific foods, nutrients or dietary patterns facilitate an addictive process. Further research is needed to elucidate potential associations. However, present addictive eating treatment approaches could incorporate individualised dietary advice targeting foods high in fat and refined carbohydrates.
