N-Doped Graphene as an Efficient Metal-Free Electrocatalyst for Indirect Nitrate Reduction Reaction.

ABSTRACT: N-doped graphene samples with different N species contents were prepared by a two-step synthesis method and evaluated as electrocatalysts for the nitrate reduction reaction (NORR) for the first time. In an acidic solution with a saturated calomel electrode as reference, the pyridinic-N dominant sample (NGR2) had an onset of 0.932 V and a half-wave potential of 0.833 V, showing the superior activity towards the NORR compared to the pyrrolic-N dominant N-doped graphene (onset potential: 0.850 V, half-wave potential: 0.732 V) and the pure graphene (onset potential: 0.698 V, half-wave potential: 0.506 V). N doping could significantly boost the NORR performance of N-doped graphene, especially the contribution of pyridinic-N. Density functional theory calculation revealed the pyridinic-N facilitated the desorption of NO, which was kinetically involved in the process of the NORR. The findings of this work would be valuable for the development of metal-free NORR electrocatalysts.

Magnesiothermic synthesis of sulfur-doped graphene as an efficient metal-free electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction.

Project description:Efficient metal-free electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are highly expected in future low-cost energy systems. We have successfully prepared crumpled, sheet-like, sulfur-doped graphene by magnesiothermic reduction of easily available, low-cost, nontoxic CO2 (in the form of Na2CO3) and Na2SO4 as the carbon and sulfur sources, respectively. At high temperature, Mg can reduce not only carbon in the oxidation state of +4 in CO3(2-) to form graphene, but also sulfur in SO4(2-) from its highest (+6) to lowest valence which was hybridized into the carbon sp(2) framework. Various characterization results show that sulfur-doped graphene with only few layers has an appropriate sulfur content, hierarchically robust porous structure, large surface area/pore volume, and highly graphitized textures. The S-doped graphene samples exhibit not only a high activity for ORR with a four-electron pathway, but also superior durability and tolerance to MeOH crossover to 40% Pt/C. This is mainly ascribed to the combination of sulfur-related active sites and hierarchical porous textures, facilitating fast diffusion of oxygen molecules and electrolyte to catalytic sites and release of products from the sites.

Nitrogen-rich graphitic-carbon@graphene as a metal-free electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction.

Project description:The metal-free nitrogen-doped graphitic-carbon@graphene (Ng-C@G) is prepared from a composite of polyaniline and graphene by a facile polymerization following by pyrolysis for electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Pyrolysis creates a sponge-like with ant-cave-architecture in the polyaniline derived nitrogenous graphitic-carbon on graphene. The nitrogenous carbon is highly graphitized and most of the nitrogen atoms are in graphitic and pyridinic forms with less oxygenated is found when pyrolyzed at 800 °C. The electrocatalytic activity of Ng-C@G-800 is even better than the benchmarked Pt/C catalyst resulting in the higher half-wave potential (8 mV) and limiting current density (0.74 mA cm-2) for ORR in alkaline medium. Higher catalytic performance is originated from the special porous structure at microscale level and the abundant graphitic- and pyridinic-N active sites at the nanoscale level on carbon-graphene matrix which are beneficial to the high O2-mass transportation to those accessible sites. Also, it possesses a higher cycle stability resulting in the negligible potential shift and slight oxidation of pyridinic-N with better tolerance to the methanol.

Noble-Metal-Free Iron Nitride/Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Composite for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Project description:Considerable effort has been devoted recently to replace platinum-based catalysts with their non-noble-metal counterparts in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. Nitrogen-doped carbon structures emerged as possible candidates for this role, and their earth-abundant metal-decorated composites showed great promise. Here, we report on the simultaneous formation of nitrogen-doped graphene and iron nitride from the lyophilized mixture of graphene oxide and iron salt by high-temperature annealing in ammonia atmosphere. A mixture of FeN and Fe2N particles was formed with average particle size increasing from 23.4 to 127.0 nm and iron content ranging from 5 to 50 wt %. The electrocatalytic oxygen reduction activity was investigated via the rotating disk electrode method in alkaline media. The highest current density of 3.65 mA cm-2 at 1500 rpm rotation rate was achieved in the 20 wt % catalyst via the four-electrode reduction pathway, exceeding the activity of both the pristine iron nitride and the undecorated nitrogen-doped graphene. Since our catalysts showed improved methanol tolerance compared to the platinum-based ones, the formed non-noble-metal system offers a viable alternative to the platinum-decorated carbon black (Pt/CB) ORR catalysts in direct methanol fuel cells.

Identification of catalytic sites for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution in N-doped graphene materials: Development of highly efficient metal-free bifunctional electrocatalyst.

Project description:Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are critical to renewable energy conversion and storage technologies. Heteroatom-doped carbon nanomaterials have been reported to be efficient metal-free electrocatalysts for ORR in fuel cells for energy conversion, as well as ORR and OER in metal-air batteries for energy storage. We reported that metal-free three-dimensional (3D) graphene nanoribbon networks (N-GRW) doped with nitrogen exhibited superb bifunctional electrocatalytic activities for both ORR and OER, with an excellent stability in alkaline electrolytes (for example, KOH). For the first time, it was experimentally demonstrated that the electron-donating quaternary N sites were responsible for ORR, whereas the electron-withdrawing pyridinic N moieties in N-GRW served as active sites for OER. The unique 3D nanoarchitecture provided a high density of the ORR and OER active sites and facilitated the electrolyte and electron transports. As a result, the as-prepared N-GRW holds great potential as a low-cost, highly efficient air cathode in rechargeable metal-air batteries. Rechargeable zinc-air batteries with the N-GRW air electrode in a two-electrode configuration exhibited an open-circuit voltage of 1.46 V, a specific capacity of 873 mAh g(-1), and a peak power density of 65 mW cm(-2), which could be continuously charged and discharged with an excellent cycling stability. Our work should open up new avenues for the development of various carbon-based metal-free bifunctional electrocatalysts of practical significance.

Micelle-template synthesis of nitrogen-doped mesoporous graphene as an efficient metal-free electrocatalyst for hydrogen production.

Project description:Synthesis of mesoporous graphene materials by soft-template methods remains a great challenge, owing to the poor self-assembly capability of precursors and the severe agglomeration of graphene nanosheets. Herein, a micelle-template strategy to prepare porous graphene materials with controllable mesopores, high specific surface areas and large pore volumes is reported. By fine-tuning the synthesis parameters, the pore sizes of mesoporous graphene can be rationally controlled. Nitrogen heteroatom doping is found to remarkably render electrocatalytic properties towards hydrogen evolution reactions as a highly efficient metal-free catalyst. The synthesis strategy and the demonstration of highly efficient catalytic effect provide benchmarks for preparing well-defined mesoporous graphene materials for energy production applications.

Nitrogen-Doped Reduced Graphene Oxide Supported Pd4.7Ru Nanoparticles Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Project description:It is imperative to design an inexpensive, active, and durable electrocatalyst in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to replace carbon black supported Pt (Pt/CB). In this work, we synthesized Pd4.7Ru nanoparticles on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (Pd4.7Ru NPs/NrGO) by a facile microwave-assisted method. Nitrogen atoms were introduced into the graphene by thermal reduction with NH3 gas and several nitrogen atoms, such as pyrrolic, graphitic, and pyridinic N, found by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Pyridinic nitrogen atoms acted as efficient particle anchoring sites, making strong bonding with Pd4.7Ru NPs. Additionally, carbon atoms bonding with pyridinic N facilitated the adsorption of O2 as Lewis bases. The uniformly distributed ~2.4 nm of Pd4.7Ru NPs on the NrGO was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The optimal composition between Pd and Ru is 4.7:1, reaching -6.33 mA/cm2 at 0.3 VRHE for the best ORR activity among all measured catalysts. Furthermore, accelerated degradation test by electrochemical measurements proved its high durability, maintaining its initial current density up to 98.3% at 0.3 VRHE and 93.7% at 0.75 VRHE, whereas other catalysts remained below 90% at all potentials. These outcomes are considered that the doped nitrogen atoms bond with the NPs stably, and their electron-rich states facilitate the interaction with the reactants on the surface. In conclusion, the catalyst can be applied to the fuel cell system, overcoming the high cost, activity, and durability issues.

Project description:Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with efficient activity and stability is significant for fuel cells. Herein, platinum (Pt) nanoparticles dispersed on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO) were prepared by a hydrothermal and carbonized approach for the electrocatalysis of ORR. Polyvinylpyrrolidone plays a significant role in the reduction and dispersion of platinum particles (about 2 nm). The obtained Pt-N-rGO hybrids exhibited superior activity with an electron transfer number of ∼4.0, onset potential 0.90 eV of ORR, good stability and methanol tolerance in alkaline media. These results reveal the interactions between Pt-N-rGO and oxygen molecules, which may represent an oxygen modified growth in catalyst preparation. The excellent electrocatalysis may lead to the decreased consumption of expensive Pt and open up new opportunities for applications in lithium air batteries.

Boron doped graphene wrapped silver nanowires as an efficient electrocatalyst for molecular oxygen reduction.

Project description:Metal nanowires exhibit unusually high catalytic activity towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to their inherent electronic structures. However, controllable synthesis of stable nanowires still remains as a daunting challenge. Herein, we report the in situ synthesis of silver nanowires (AgNWs) over boron doped graphene sheets (BG) and demonstrated its efficient electrocatalytic activity towards ORR for the first time. The electrocatalytic ORR efficacy of BG-AgNW is studied using various voltammetric techniques. The BG wrapped AgNWs shows excellent ORR activity, with very high onset potential and current density and it followed four electron transfer mechanism with high methanol tolerance and stability towards ORR. The results are comparable to the commercially available 20% Pt/C in terms of performance.

Novel Porous Nitrogen Doped Graphene/Carbon Black Composites as Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction Electrocatalyst for Power Generation in Microbial Fuel Cell.

Project description:To improve the power generation of a microbial fuel cell (MFC), a porous nitrogen-doped graphene/carbon black (NG/CB) composite as efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst was successfully synthesized by pyrolyzing graphene oxide (GO) encapsulated CB with cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide as a bridge. This concept-to-proof synthesis can be considered as a template-like method. Based on this method, one composite named as NG/CB-10 was acquired using the optimized GO-to-CB mass ratio of 10:1. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that NG/CB-10 can catalyze ORR in neutral-pH medium through a four-electron pathway with positively shifted the onset potential, the enhanced current density and reduced charge transfer resistance. CB addition also prolongs the stability of NG/CB-10. The enhancement in electrochemical performance of NG/CB-10 was attributed to the enlarged surface area, abundant mesopores and high content of pyridinic nitrogen. The maximum power density of MFC equipping NG/CB-10 as cathode electrocatalyst reached 936 mW·m-2, which was 26% higher than that of NG and equal to that of platinum/carbon. The cost of NG/CB-10 was reduced by 25% compared with that of NG. This work provides a novel method to synthesize promising ORR electrocatalyst for MFC in the future.
