Iron Forms Fe(II) and Fe(III) Determination in Pre-Roman Iron Age Archaeological Pottery as a New Tool in Archaeometry.

ABSTRACT: This article presents studies on iron speciation in the pottery obtained from archaeological sites. The determination of iron forms Fe(II) and Fe(III) has been provided by a very simple test that is available for routine analysis involving the technique of molecular absorption spectrophotometry (UV-Vis) in the acid leachable fraction of pottery. The elemental composition of the acid leachable fraction has been determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Additionally, the total concentration of the selected elements has been determined by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry with energy dispersion (EDXRF). The results of the iron forms' determinations in archaeological pottery samples have been applied in the archaeometric studies on the potential recognition of the pottery production technology, definitely going beyond the traditional analysis of the pottery colour.

Project description:Iron artifacts are common among the findings of archaeological excavations. The corrosion layer formed on these objects requires stabilization after their recovery, without which the destruction of the item due to physicochemical damage is likely. Current technologies for stabilizing the corrosion layer are lengthy and generate hazardous waste products. Therefore, there is a pressing need for an alternative method for stabilizing the corrosion layer on iron objects. The aim of this study was to evaluate an alternative conservation-restoration method using bacteria. For this, anaerobic iron reduction leading to the formation of stable iron minerals in the presence of chlorine was investigated for two strains of Desulfitobacterium hafniense (strains TCE1 and LBE). Iron reduction was observed for soluble Fe(III) phases as well as for akaganeite, the most troublesome iron compound in the corrosion layer of archaeological iron objects. In terms of biogenic mineral production, differential efficiencies were observed in assays performed on corroded iron coupons. Strain TCE1 produced a homogeneous layer of vivianite covering 80% of the corroded surface, while on the coupons treated with strain LBE, only 10% of the surface was covered by the same mineral. Finally, an attempt to reduce iron on archaeological objects was performed with strain TCE1, which led to the formation of both biogenic vivianite and magnetite on the surface of the artifacts. These results demonstrate the potential of this biological treatment for stabilizing archaeological iron as a promising alternative to traditional conservation-restoration methods.IMPORTANCE Since the Iron Age, iron has been a fundamental material for the building of objects used in everyday life. However, due to its reactivity, iron can be easily corroded, and the physical stability of the object built is at risk. This is particularly true for archaeological objects on which a potentially unstable corrosion layer is formed during the time the object is buried. After excavation, changes in environmental conditions (e.g., higher oxygen concentration or lower humidity) alter the stability of the corrosion layer and can lead to the total destruction of the object. In this study, we demonstrate the feasibility of an innovative treatment based on bacterial iron reduction and biogenic mineral formation to stabilize the corrosion layer and protect these objects.

Project description:Iron ions can be used to degrade tetracycline dispersed in nature. Studies of absorption and fluorescence spectra and quantum chemistry calculations showed that iron is more readily released from Fe(III)-citrate than from Fe(III)-EDTA, so Fe(III)-citrate (Fe(III)-Cit) is more suitable for tetracycline (TC) degradation. At 30 °C, a severe degradation of TC by Fe(III)-Cit occurred as early as after 3 days of incubation in the light, and after 5 days in the dark. In contrast, the degradation of TC by Fe(III)-EDTA proceeded very slowly in the dark. By the fifth day of incubation of TC with Fe(III)-Cit in darkness, the concentrations of the former compound dropped by 55% and 75%, at 20 °C and 30 °C, respectively. The decrease in tetracycline concentrations caused by Fe(III)-EDTA in darkness at the same temperatures was only 2% and 6%, respectively. Light increased the degradation rates of TC by Fe(III)-EDTA to 20% and 56% at 20 °C and 30 °C, respectively. The key role of the light in the degradation of tetracycline by Fe(III)-EDTA was thus demonstrated. The TC degradation reaction showed a second-order kinetics. The rate constants of Fe(III)-Cit-induced TC degradation at 20 °C and 30 °C in darkness were k = 4238 M−1day−1 and k = 11,330 M−1day−1, respectively, while for Fe(III)-EDTA were 55 M−1day−1 and 226 M−1day−1. In light, these constants were k = 15,440 M−1day−1 and k = 40,270 M−1day−1 for Fe(III)-Cit and k = 1012 M−1day−1 and 2050 M−1day−1 at 20 °C and 30 °C; respectively. A possible reason for the higher TC degradation rate caused by Fe(III)-Cit can be the result of its lower thermodynamical stability compared with Fe(III)-EDTA, which we confirmed with our quantum chemistry calculations. Two quantum chemistry calculations showed that the iron complex with EDTA is more stable (the free energy of the ensemble is 15.8 kcal/mol lower) than the iron complex with Cit; hence, Fe release from Fe(III)-EDTA is less effective.
