Marine temperatures underestimated for past greenhouse climate.

ABSTRACT: Understanding the Earth's climate system during past periods of high atmospheric CO₂ is crucial for forecasting climate change under anthropogenically-elevated CO₂. The Mesozoic Era is believed to have coincided with a long-term Greenhouse climate, and many of our temperature reconstructions come from stable isotopes of marine biotic calcite, in particular from belemnites, an extinct group of molluscs with carbonate hard-parts. Yet, temperatures reconstructed from the oxygen isotope composition of belemnites are consistently colder than those derived from other temperature proxies, leading to large uncertainties around Mesozoic sea temperatures. Here we apply clumped isotope palaeothermometry to two distinct carbonate phases from exceptionally well-preserved belemnites in order to constrain their living habitat, and improve temperature reconstructions based on stable oxygen isotopes. We show that belemnites precipitated both aragonite and calcite in warm, open ocean surface waters, and demonstrate how previous low estimates of belemnite calcification temperatures has led to widespread underestimation of Mesozoic sea temperatures by ca. 12 °C, raising estimates of some of the lowest temperature estimates for the Jurassic period to values which approach modern mid-latitude sea surface temperatures. Our findings enable accurate recalculation of global Mesozoic belemnite temperatures, and will thus improve our understanding of Greenhouse climate dynamics.

Project description:BackgroundThe lack of instrumental data before the mid-19th-century limits our understanding of present warming trends. In the absence of direct measurements, we used proxies that are natural or historical archives recording past climatic changes. A gridded reconstruction of spring-summer temperature was produced for Europe based on tree-rings, documentaries, pollen assemblages and ice cores. The majority of proxy series have an annual resolution. For a better inference of long-term climate variation, they were completed by low-resolution data (decadal or more), mostly on pollen and ice-core data.Methodology/principal findingsAn original spectral analog method was devised to deal with this heterogeneous dataset, and to preserve long-term variations and the variability of temperature series. So we can replace the recent climate changes in a broader context of the past 1400 years. This preservation is possible because the method is not based on a calibration (regression) but on similarities between assemblages of proxies. The reconstruction of the April-September temperatures was validated with a Jack-knife technique. It was also compared to other spatially gridded temperature reconstructions, literature data, and glacier advance and retreat curves. We also attempted to relate the spatial distribution of European temperature anomalies to known solar and volcanic forcings.ConclusionsWe found that our results were accurate back to 750. Cold periods prior to the 20(th) century can be explained partly by low solar activity and/or high volcanic activity. The Medieval Warm Period (MWP) could be correlated to higher solar activity. During the 20(th) century, however only anthropogenic forcing can explain the exceptionally high temperature rise. Warm periods of the Middle Age were spatially more heterogeneous than last decades, and then locally it could have been warmer. However, at the continental scale, the last decades were clearly warmer than any period of the last 1400 years. The heterogeneity of MWP versus the homogeneity of the last decades is likely an argument that different forcings could have operated. These results support the fact that we are living a climate change in Europe never seen in the past 1400 years.

Project description:Greenhouse production of baby leaf vegetables grown in hydroponic floating trays has become extremely popular in recent years. Rocket (Eruca sativa Mill.) can grow in temperatures varying between 10 and 20 °C; nevertheless, a root-zone temperature (RZT) range of 18-23 °C is considered optimal for high productivity, photosynthesis, and production of metabolites. Maintaining such temperatures in winter raises production costs and prevents sustainability. In this study, we tested the impact of lower RZT on plants' status and recorded their responses while providing energy for heating using photovoltaic solar panels. We used three hydroponic tanks for cultivation; a non-heated (control) tank (12 °C) and two heated tanks; a solar panel-powered one (16 °C) and a public grid-powered one (22 °C). Methylation-sensitive amplified polymorphisms (MSAP) analysis of global methylation profiles and chlorophyll fluorescence analysis were employed to assess methylation and physiology levels of rocket leaves. We found that there is demethylation at 16 °C RZT in comparison to 22 °C RZT. Reduction of temperature at 12 °C did not reduce methylation levels further but rather increased them. Furthermore, at 16 °C, the effective quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry (ΦPSII) was significantly higher, with a higher PSII electron transport rate (ETR) and a significantly decreased non-regulated energy loss (ΦΝO), suggesting a better light energy use by rocket plants with higher photosynthetic performance. ΦPSII was significantly negatively correlated with DNA methylation levels. Our results show that at 16 °C RZT, where plants grow efficiently without being affected by the cold, DNA methylation and photosynthesis apparatus systems are altered. These findings corroborate previous results where hydroponic production of rocket at RZT of 16 °C is accompanied by sufficient yield showing that rocket can effectively grow in suboptimal yet sustainable root-zone temperatures.
