KNOX and BELL transcription factors regulate distinct steps of diploid development in plants. In the green alga <i>Chlamydomonas reinhardtii,</i> KNOX and BELL proteins are inherited by gametes of the opposite mating types and heterodimerize in zygotes to activate diploid development.
